6. Behavioral Weight Management Interventions for Hispanic Men in the United States: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Hispanic men have the highest prevalence of obesity relative to other racial and ethnic subgroups; however, this population is consistently underrepresented in weight management interventions. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of behavioral weight management interventions adapted for Hispanic men and describe their tailoring strategies and efficacy. Six online databases were selected for their abundant collection of high-quality, peer-reviewed literature and searched for studies which evaluated and reported weight outcomes for a cohort of adult (>18 years) Hispanic men. Of 6,508 unique publications screened, 12 interventions met inclusion criteria, the majority of which were published in the past 10 years. Only one study regarding an intervention tailored for Hispanic men was a randomized controlled trial adequately powered to assess a weight-based outcome; the remaining assessed feasibility or utilized quasi-experimental methods. Intervention characteristics and tailoring strategies varied considerably, but content was most frequently based on the Diabetes Prevention Program. Tailoring strategies commonly focused on improving linguistic access and incorporating social or family support. Follow-up varied from 1 month to 30 months and mean change in weight, the most common outcome, ranged from 0.6 to −6.3 kg. Our findings reveal a need for more fully powered randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of interventions systematically tailored specifically for Hispanic men. Although the majority were not fully powered, these interventions showed some efficacy among their small cohorts for short-term weight loss. Future directions include exploring how to tailor goals, concepts, and metaphors included in interventions and comparing individual to group delivery settings.

Abstract

Abstract Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory disorder that is common, costly, and is increasing in incidence worldwide with over 300,000 hospitalizations occurring yearly in the United States alone. As its course and outcomes vary widely, a critical knowledge gap in the field has been a lack of accurate prognostic tools to forecast AP patients’ outcomes. Despite several published studies in the last three decades, the predictive performance of published prognostic models has been found to be suboptimal. Recently, non-regression machine learning models (ML) have garnered intense interest in medicine for their potential for better predictive performance. Each year, an increasing number of AP models are being published. However, their methodologic quality relating to transparent reporting and risk of bias in study design has never been systematically appraised. Therefore, through collaboration between a group of clinicians and data scientists with appropriate content expertise, we will perform a systematic review of papers published between January 2021 and December 2023 containing artificial intelligence prognostic models in AP. To systematically assess these studies, the authors will leverage the CHARMS checklist, PROBAST tool for risk of bias assessment, and the most current version of the TRIPOD-AI. Abstract

Here we present a detailed description of different geomorphic features to complement the Maps of Geohazard Features of the Ionian Calabrian Margin produced by the Magic project (Marine Geohazard along Italian Coasts). Some of the most striking features we imaged are sources of widespread and recurrent geohazards. These include multiple coastal landslides, failure scars along open slopes, shelf-indenting retrogressive canyon headwalls and active fluid venting structures, that we investigated by integrating regional high-resolution multibeam sonar and sub-bottom profiling data. The main triggers and predisposing factors for the marine geohazards that we identify in our study area include frequent seismic activity, the rapid uplift of the margin since 1 Ma and the presence of Messinian evaporites at depth. Large-scale gravity-driven movements and the incipient retrogressive canyon headwalls are of particular concern, as they are located just a few hundred meters from the coast, where critical infrastructures and densely populated urban centers are situated, and also where high-resolution geophysical data are often lacking. Overall, our study provides a key reference for more detailed follow-up studies to foster a better understanding of marine geohazard occurrences. The insights provided are critical for planning monitoring programs and for the protection of coastal settlements and marine infrastructures along the Calabrian Ionian margin.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe north-eastern border of CA represents the accretionary system developed during its continuous collision with Apulian block. The tardive oblique tectonic component is highlighted by pervasive NW-SE crustal transpressive left-lateral strike slip faults developed from the Upper Miocene to Quaternary tectonic stages. The seismotectonic and landslides Main Map represents the update of the main faults, the style of their arrangement and kinematics, the seismotectonic features and landslide area distribution with risk implications. Seismotectonics allows us to recognise a vertical crustal zonation with the distribution of earthquakes and their focal mechanism solution. The prevalent modality of ruptures depicts a mainly transcurrent and compressive solution in mid-lower crust portions respectively. This data, together with the historical seismicity analysis of the area, lead to consider the NW-SE strike-slip faults improved on the Main Map, as recent and tectonically active. The areal distribution of landslide and susceptibility of the area is due to the interaction between seismotectonic peculiarity, lithological typologies and fault zone architectures. Landslides and flood phenomena of this sector involve many municipalities, major and minor infrastructures and economic and social activities. The landslides and the faults have been identified, mapped and classified, originally at detail scale and, then, represented at 1:50,000 scale in the Main Map, included as supplementary material. The geo-structural and geomorphological data were analysed in a geographic information system allowing data management and implementation. The work presents an updated knowledge framework of risk conditions of the study zone, available to plan and reduce the fundamental elements that determine the landslide and seismic risks in this region.

13. Is It Enough? Examining Instructional Management in a New Paradigm of Teaching and Learning

For decades, educational leadership researchers have focused on school leadership behaviors, competencies, and skills that impact student outcomes measured by the students' performance on standardized tests. This practice has narrowed the focus for how the field approaches teaching and learning and the evaluation models that measure school, teacher, leader, and student academic performance. To examine leadership and teaching and learning that support the development of the whole child and not just their performance on exams, this quantitative study set out to examine: Is there a relationship between a school leadership teams' prioritization of SEL, their instructional management practice, and the teachers' use of SEL pedagogy in the classroom? To examine the research question, a set of five sub-research questions were developed to organize and guide this work. Interest to participate in this study was gained by aligning the research to the district's strategic plan. The sample included 107 teacher participants drawn from five participant public elementary schools in a large diverse urban school district. Data applied in the analysis were collected through the application of three instruments. Two of the instruments were developed and pilot tested as part of this research. The results of this research indicate that despite the ample evidence that shows instructional management having a positive impact on student learning, its effect on the pedagogies examined that support the development of social and emotional competence was limited. The greatest contribution of this study was the development of a valid and reliable tool to evaluate ten social and emotional learning teacher/pedagogical practices. 17. A new large-scale gravitational complex discovered in the Gulf of Squillace (central Mediterranean): tectonic implications

Abstract

Abstract Seismic reflection (2D/3D), borehole and bathymetric data are used to recognize a new gravitational complex in the Gulf of Squillace, Southern Italy, named the Squillace Complex. The complex has a NE-striking headwall connected to a basal detachment formed between Messinian evaporites and Tortonian shales. Its sense of movement changes to a W–E direction in the toe region. In plan view, the Squillace Complex is marked by the presence of sinuous and continuous seafloor scarps, just a few kilometers offshore, over an elongated morphological high. Seismic-well ties reveal that the complex was initiated in the Zanclean (~ 4 Ma) and continued its movement into the Gelasian (~ 2.1 Ma) at an average rate of 1.9 mm/year. Movement slowed down in the Calabrian (middle Pleistocene) and continued until the present day at a lower rate of 0.1 mm/year. Gravitational collapse of the Squillace Complex correlates with discrete contractional/transpressional events affecting the Calabrian region, which caused basin shortening and the temporary arrest of Calabrian Arc migration. These episodes resulted in tectonic uplift in the study area after 0.45 Ma (Late Pleistocene). Conversely, the complex’s slower movement recorded since the Calabrian (middle Pleistocene) is associated with slab rollback of the Ionian plate under the Calabrian Arc.

Abstract

This study investigates the geomechanical behavior of five terrace orders in the Crotone Basin. The purpose is to understand the physical–mechanical parameters of these terraces to determine whether rock or soil mechanics principles should be applied for stability analysis. Samples were collected from each terrace following an extensive field survey. Laboratory analyses were conducted to measure pulse velocities, uniaxial unconfined compressive strength, and compressive strength with truncated conical platens. The findings revealed key physical–mechanical parameters of the rocks, which are crucial for stability assessments. The Crotone Basin, known for its mineral resources such as hydrocarbons and rock salts, has been studied geologically since before the 1950s, but there is a lack of geomechanical data in existing literature. Therefore, the results presented here are novel and provide a basis for future studies on the instability of rocky slopes composed of similar soft rock types. These results will aid in accurate geological–geotechnical model reconstructions. While the findings can be applied to similar cases, it is important to note that each analysis site, despite showing similar phenomena, is unique and requires individual investigation.

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Curative treatments are available to a minority of patients, as HCC is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. For patients with unresectable and multifocal HCC, tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs (TKIs) are the only potential treatment option. Despite extensive research, predictors of response to these therapies remain elusive. This study aimed to analyze the biological and histopathological characteristics of HCC patients treated with TKIs, focusing on angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Immunohistochemistry quantified the expression of angiopoietin-2 (Ang2), lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC) podoplanin, and C-type Lectin Domain Family 2 (CLEC-2), key factors in neoangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. An increased expression of endothelial Ang2 and LEC podoplanin predicted a lower risk of metastasis. Female patients had significantly longer overall survival and survival on TKIs, associated with higher tumor expression of endothelial Ang2 and LEC podoplanin. Moreover, LEC podoplanin expression and a longer time on TKIs were independently correlated with improved survival on TKI therapy at Cox regression analysis. These findings suggest that endothelial Ang2 and LEC podoplanin could be potential biomarkers for predicting treatment outcomes and guiding therapeutic strategies in HCC patients treated with TKIs.

Abstract

We evaluated SARS-CoV-2 antibody response in voluntary blood donors in Italy at different timepoints. Immediately after lockdown easing, 908/25,657 donors (3.5%) had low IgG titers against nucleocapsid. In the next 2 years, titers increased despite few COVID-19 symptoms. On multivariate analysis, allergic rhinitis was associated with reduced risk for symptomatic COVID-19.

Abstract

Aggressive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) overexpressing Angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2) (a protein linked with angiogenesis, proliferation, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)), shares 95% of up-regulated genes and a similar poor prognosis with the proliferative subgroup of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). We analyzed the pro-invasive effect of ANG-2 and its regulator vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on HCC and CCA spheroids to uncover posUsible common ways of response. Four cell lines were used: Hep3B and HepG2 (HCC), HuCC-T1 (iCCA), and EGI-1 (extrahepatic CCA). We treated the spheroids with recombinant human (rh) ANG-2 and/or VEGF and then observed the changes at the baseline, after 24 h, and again after 48 h. Proangiogenic stimuli increased migration and invasion capability in HCC- and iCCA-derived spheroids and were associated with a modification in EMT phenotypic markers (a decrease in E-cadherin and an increase in N-cadherin and Vimentin), especially at the migration front. Inhibitors targeting ANG-2 (Trebananib) and the VEGF (Bevacizumab) effectively blocked the migration ability of spheroids that had been stimulated with rh-ANG-2 and rh-VEGF. Overall, our findings highlight the critical role played by ANG-2 and the VEGF in enhancing the ability of HCC- and iCCA-derived spheroids to migrate and invade, which are key processes in cancer progression.
