The electrokinetic properties of normal and pathological red cells and platelets are compared. The electrophoretic mobilities and isoelectric points of normal and pathological erythrocytes do not differ significantly, adsorption of calcium and uranyl ions occur to the same extent and treatment with neuraminidase induces almost identical mobility decreases. The pathological platelet-plasma system is more sensitive to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) than normal systems; platelet aggregation and electrophoretic mobility increases are induced by much lower concentrations of ADP than those normally required. The pathological platelet system shows a greater tendency to aggregate spontaneously. A chronic degenerative neurological disorder is described which is characterized by tics, grimacing, involuntary movements, a severe disturbance of swallowing and a concurrent malformation of the erythrocytes. This condition is clearly different from familial hypo-betalipoproteinaemia and abetalipoproteinaemia, the two previously described neurological disorders associated with abnormal red cells. The article focuses on the study about the reading disability of delinquent boys aging between 12 and 17 years, as referred by the courts for assessment at a London Remand Home and Classifying Center. The study aims to determine, among which, the prevalence of retardation in reading when delinquents are compared to school children of similar age, and whether they can be found to have suffering from developmental dyslexia. To find answers to these questions, a prospective and a retrospective study was administered to these delinquents. The subjects' records particularly the offense they committed and the results of their psychiatric assessment were assessed and examined. After data interpretation, it was learned that 60 percent of the children were retarded in reading by two years or more.

The communication difficulties of prelingually profoundly deaf patients render psychiatric diagnosis extremely difficult. A study of 12 prelingually profoundly deaf schizophrenic patients revealed that visual hallucinations occurred in 10, and 10 also had experiences analogous to auditory hallucinations although voices may not have been heard. The clinical features of 27 patients identified in an outbreak of botulism in Lancashire, England, and North Wales are reviewed. All but 1 of the patients (age range 14 months to 74 years) were admitted to hospital: 12 were treated in intensive care units, and 8 received positive pressure ventilation. 1 patient died with an aspiration pneumonia. The clinical presentations contained several unusual features, with evidence of segmental demyelination in some patients and drowsiness, sore throats, and fever in others. The widely dispersed source of intoxication with patients presenting singly to several hospitals added to the difficulties of diagnosis. Successful clinical management depends on full and early recognition both of the dangers of impaired oropharyngeal function and of the rapid neurological changes in botulism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
