- Abstract
Effective communication is one of the most important tools and skills in promoting patient safety. Through it we can perceive and confirm what the patient wants to tell us, their feelings, acceptance, denial and their needs, and from it we can resolve them or not. Especially in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where the majority of patients are under sedation, intubated or drowsy. The study aimed to problematize and reflect on the barriers and facilities to make care in the Intensive Care Unit safer and more humanized. It was possible to understand that ICU health professionals recognize the value of communication as key to the humanization of care; however, it is necessary to recognize the barriers that exist in the process. This highly complex and technologically advanced environment requires the healthcare team to develop cognitive skills, practical skills and responsibilities that sometimes lead professionals to leave communication with the patient in the background and address needs in a technical way, widespread and insensitive, putting at risk the humanization of patient care. Therefore, communication is a right and something crucial and indispensable during the health process. Communication in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) plays a fundamental role in providing safe, individualized and humanized care to patients.
