We formulate and study a general time-varying multi-agent system where players repeatedly compete under incomplete information. Our work is motivated by scenarios commonly observed in online advertising and retail marketplaces, where agents and platform designers optimize algorithmic decision-making in dynamic competitive settings. In these systems, no-regret algorithms that provide guarantees relative to \emph{static} benchmarks can perform poorly and the distributions of play that emerge from their interaction do not correspond anymore to static solution concepts such as coarse correlated equilibria. Instead, we analyze the interaction of \textit{dynamic benchmark} consistent policies that have performance guarantees relative to \emph{dynamic} sequences of actions, and through a novel \textit{tracking error} notion we delineate when their empirical joint distribution of play can approximate an evolving sequence of static equilibria. In systems that change sufficiently slowly (sub-linearly in the horizon length), we show that the resulting distributions of play approximate the sequence of coarse correlated equilibria, and apply this result to establish improved welfare bounds for smooth games. On a similar vein, we formulate internal dynamic benchmark consistent policies and establish that they approximate sequences of correlated equilibria. Our findings therefore suggest that, in a broad range of multi-agent systems where non-stationarity is prevalent, algorithms designed to compete with dynamic benchmarks can improve both individual and welfare guarantees, and their emerging dynamics approximate a sequence of static equilibrium outcomes.

Bayesian predictive probabilities of success (PPoS) use interim trial data to calculate the probability of trial success. These quantities can be used to optimize trial size or to stop for futility. In this paper, we describe a simulation-based approach to compute the PPoS for clinical trials with competing event data, for which no specific methodology is currently available. The proposed procedure hinges on modelling the joint distribution of time to event and event type by specifying Bayesian models for the cause-specific hazards of all event types. This allows the prediction of outcome data at the conclusion of the trial. The PPoS is obtained by numerically averaging the probability of success evaluated at fixed parameter values over the posterior distribution of the parameters. Our work is motivated by two randomised clinical trials: the I-SPY COVID phase II trial for the treatment of severe COVID-19 (NCT04488081) and the STHLM3 prostate cancer diagnostic trial (ISRCTN84445406), both of which are characterised by competing event data. We present different modelling alternatives for the joint distribution of time to event and event type and show how the choice of the prior distributions can be used to assess the PPoS under different scenarios. An accurate and timely assessment of wind speed and energy output allows an efficient planning and management of this resource on the power grid. Wind energy, especially at high resolution, calls for the development of nonlinear statistical models able to capture complex dependencies in space and time. This work introduces a Convolutional Echo State AutoencodeR (CESAR), a spatio-temporal, neural network-based model which first extracts the spatial features with a deep convolutional autoencoder, and then models their dynamics with an echo state network. We also propose a two-step approach to also allow for computationally affordable inference, while also performing uncertainty quantification. We focus on a high-resolution simulation in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), an area where wind farm planning is currently ongoing, and show how CESAR is able to provide improved forecasting of wind speed and power for proposed building sites by up to 17% against the best alternative methods.

We study the role of different spatial inhomogeneities in generating the conditions for the appearance of a superconducting diode effect in the Fraunhofer pattern of wide Josephson junctions. Through the scattering matrix approach, we highlight the role of mirror symmetry of the junction in forbidding the diode effect in both the two-terminal and the multi-terminal case. As sources of mirror symmetry breaking, we study spatial potentials of long and short wavelength with respect to the size of the system, mimicking the effect of side gates and atomic scale disorder, respectively, as well as the geometry of the junction, and assess their impact on the diode effect. As a common trend, we observe qualitatively similar rectification patterns magnified at the nodal points of the Fraunhofer pattern by destructing interference. In multi-terminal mirror-symmetric setups, we single out the phase at additional terminals as a controllable knob to tune the diode effect at the finite field. We aim to apply a quantum computing technique to compose artworks. The main idea is to revisit three paintings of different styles and historical periods: ''Narciso'', painted circa 1597-1599 by Michelangelo Merisi (Caravaggio), ''Les fils de l'homme'', painted in 1964 by Rene Magritte and ''192 Farben'', painted in 1966 by Gerard Richter. We utilize the output of a quantum computation to change the composition in the paintings, leading to a paintings series titled ''Quantum Transformation I, II, III''. In particular, the figures are discretized into square lattices and the order of the pieces is changed according to the result of the quantum simulation. We consider an Ising Hamiltonian as the observable in the quantum computation and its time evolution as the final outcome. From a classical subject to abstract forms, we seek to combine classical and quantum aesthetics through these three art pieces. Besides experimenting with hardware runs and circuit noise, our goal is to reproduce these works as physical oil paintings on wooden panels. Compact lattice Quantum Electrodynamics is a complex quantum field theory with dynamical gauge and matter fields and it has similarities with Quantum Chromodynamics, in particular asymptotic freedom and confinement. We consider a (2+1)-dimensional lattice discretization of Quantum Electrodynamics with the inclusion of dynamical fermionic matter. We define a suitable quantum algorithm to measure the static potential as a function of the distance between two charges on the lattice and we use a variational quantum calculation to explore the Coulomb, confinement and string breaking regimes. A symmetry-preserving and resource-efficient variational quantum circuit is employed to prepare the ground state of the theory at various values of the coupling constant, corresponding to different physical distances, allowing the accurate extraction of the static potential from a quantum computer. We demonstrate that results from quantum experiments on the Quantinuum H1-1 trapped-ion device and emulator, with full connectivity between qubits, agree with classical noiseless simulations using circuits with 10 and 24 qubits. Moreover, we visualize the electric field flux configurations that mostly contribute in the wave-function of the quantum ground state in the different regimes of the potential, thus giving insights into the mechanisms of confinement and string breaking. We propose numerical schemes for the approximate solution of problems defined on the edges of a one-dimensional graph. In particular, we consider linear transport and a drift-diffusion equations, and discretize them by extending Finite Volume schemes with upwind flux to domains presenting bifurcation nodes with an arbitrary number of incoming and outgoing edges, and implicit time discretization. We show that the discrete problems admit positive unique solutions, and we test the methods on the intricate geometry of an electrical treeing.

This paper considers the problem of ranking objects based on their latent merits using data from pairwise interactions. Existing approaches rely on the restrictive assumption that all the interactions are either observed or missed randomly. We investigate what can be inferred about rankings when this assumption is relaxed. First, we demonstrate that in parametric models, such as the popular Bradley-Terry-Luce model, rankings are point-identified if and only if the tournament graph is connected. Second, we show that in nonparametric models based on strong stochastic transitivity, rankings in a connected tournament are only partially identified. Finally, we propose two statistical tests to determine whether a ranking belongs to the identified set. One test is valid in finite samples but computationally intensive, while the other is easy to implement and valid asymptotically. We illustrate our procedure using Brazilian employer-employee data to test whether male and female workers rank firms differently when making job transitions.

Quantum computing with qudits, quantum systems with $d > 2$ levels, offers a powerful extension beyond qubits, expanding the computational possibilities of quantum systems, allowing the simplification of the implementation of several algorithms and, possibly, providing a foundation for optimised error correction. In this work, we propose a novel formulation of qudit gates that is universally applicable for any number of levels $d$, without restrictions on the dimensionality. By extending the mathematical framework of quantum gates to arbitrary dimensions, we derive explicit gate operations that form a universal set for quantum computation on qudits of any size. We demonstrate the validity of our approach through the implementation of the Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) for arbitrary $d$, verifying both the correctness and utility of our generalized gates. This novel methodology broadens the design space for quantum algorithms and fault-tolerant architectures, paving the way for advancements in qudit-based quantum computing.

We derive a mixed-dimensional 3D-1D formulation of the electrostatic equation in two domains with different dielectric constants to compute, with an affordable computational cost, the electric field and potential in the relevant case of thin inclusions in a larger 3D domain. The numerical solution is obtained by Mixed Finite Elements for the 3D problem and Finite Elements on the 1D domain. We analyze some test cases with simple geometries to validate the proposed approach against analytical solutions, and perform comparisons with the fully resolved 3D problem. We treat the case where ramifications are present in the one-dimensional domain and show some results on the geometry of an electrical treeing, a ramified structure that propagates in insulators causing their failure.

The behavior of many complex systems, from nanostructured materials to animal colonies, is governed by local transitions that, while involving a restricted number of interacting units, may generate collective cascade phenomena. Tracking such local events and understanding how they emerge and propagate throughout these systems represent often a challenge. Common strategies monitor specific parameters, tailored ad hoc to describe certain systems, over time. However, such approaches typically require prior knowledge of the underpinning physics and are poorly transferable to different systems. Here we present LEAP, a general, transferable, agnostic analysis approach that can reveal precious information on the physics of a variety of complex dynamical systems simply starting from the trajectory of their constitutive units. Built on a bivariate combination of two abstract descriptors, LENS and {\tau}SOAP, the LEAP analysis allows (i) detecting the emergence of local fluctuations in simulation or experimentally-acquired trajectories of any type of multicomponent system, (ii) classifying fluctuations into categories, and (iii) correlating them in space and time. We demonstrate how LEAP, just building on the abstract concepts of local fluctuations and their spatiotemporal correlation, efficiently reveals precious insights on the emergence and propagation of local and collective phenomena in a variety of complex dynamical systems ranging from the atomic- to the microscopic-scale. Given its abstract character, we expect that LEAP will offer an important tool to understand and predict the behavior of systems whose physics is unknown a priori, as well as to revisit a variety of known complex physical phenomena under a new perspective.

This chapter examines the Variational Quantum Harmonizer, a software tool and musical interface that focuses on the problem of sonification of the minimization steps of Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQA), used for simulating properties of quantum systems and optimization problems assisted by quantum hardware. Particularly, it details the sonification of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems using VQA. A flexible design enables its future applications both as a sonification tool for auditory displays in scientific investigation, and as a hybrid quantum-digital musical instrument for artistic endeavours. In turn, sonification can help researchers understand complex systems better and can serve for the training of quantum physics and quantum computing. The VQH structure, including its software implementation, control mechanisms, and sonification mappings are detailed. Moreover, it guides the design of QUBO cost functions in VQH as a music compositional object. The discussion is extended to the implications of applying quantum-assisted simulation in quantum-computer aided composition and live-coding performances. We establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness results for nonlocal conservation laws in several space dimensions under weak (that is, Sobolev or BV) differentiability assumptions on the convolution kernel. In contrast to the case of a smooth kernel, in general the solution experiences finite-time blow-up. We provide an explicit example showing that solutions corresponding to different smooth approximations of the convolution kernel in general converge to different measures after the blow-up time. This rules out a fairly natural strategy for extending the notion of solution of the nonlocal conservation law after the blow-up time., Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure

In this work, we study several properties of the normal Lebesgue trace of vector fields introduced by the second and third author in [18] in the context of the energy conservation for the Euler equations in Onsager-critical classes. Among several properties, we prove that the normal Lebesgue trace satisfies the Gauss-Green identity and, by providing explicit counterexamples, that it is a notion sitting strictly between the distributional one for measure-divergence vector fields and the strong one for $BV$ functions. These results are then applied to the study of the uniqueness of weak solutions for continuity equations on bounded domains, allowing to remove the assumption in [15] of global $BV$ regularity up to the boundary, at least around the portion of the boundary where the characteristics exit the domain or are tangent. The proof relies on an explicit renormalization formula completely characterized by the boundary datum and the positive part of the normal Lebesgue trace. In the case when the characteristics enter the domain, a counterexample shows that achieving the normal trace in the Lebesgue sense is not enough to prevent non-uniqueness, and thus a $BV$ assumption seems to be necessary for the uniqueness of weak solutions., Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures. In this paper, we examine a compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory in $(2+1)$ dimensions and present a strategy for studying the running coupling and extracting the non-perturbative $\Lambda$-parameter. To this end, we combine Monte Carlo simulations and quantum computing, where the former can be used to determine the numerical value of the lattice spacing $a$, and the latter allows for reaching the perturbative regime at very small values of the bare coupling and, correspondingly, small values of $a$. The methodology involves a series of sequential steps (i.e., the step scaling function) to bridge results from small lattice spacings to non-perturbative large-scale lattice calculations. Focusing on the pure gauge case, we demonstrate that these quantum circuits, adapted to gauge degrees of freedom, are able to capture the relevant physics by studying the expectation value of the plaquette operator, for matching with corresponding Monte Carlo simulations. We also present results for the static potential and static force, which can be related to the renormalized coupling. Threshold policies are targeting mechanisms that assign treatments based on whether an observable characteristic exceeds a certain threshold. They are widespread across multiple domains, such as welfare programs, taxation, and clinical medicine. This paper addresses the problem of designing threshold policies using experimental data, when the goal is to maximize the population welfare. First, I characterize the regret (a measure of policy optimality) of the Empirical Welfare Maximizer (EWM) policy, popular in the literature. Next, I introduce the Smoothed Welfare Maximizer (SWM) policy, which improves the EWM's regret convergence rate under an additional smoothness condition. The two policies are compared studying how differently their regrets depend on the population distribution, and investigating their finite sample performances through Monte Carlo simulations. In many contexts, the welfare guaranteed by the novel SWM policy is larger than with the EWM. An empirical illustration demonstrates how the treatment recommendation of the two policies may in practice notably differ.

Gate-tunable transmons (gatemons) employing semiconductor Josephson junctions have recently emerged as building blocks for hybrid quantum circuits. In this study, we present a gatemon fabricated in planar Germanium. We induce superconductivity in a two-dimensional hole gas by evaporating aluminum atop a thin spacer, which separates the superconductor from the Ge quantum well. The Josephson junction is then integrated into an Xmon circuit and capacitively coupled to a transmission line resonator. We showcase the qubit tunability in a broad frequency range with resonator and two-tone spectroscopy. Time-domain characterizations reveal energy relaxation and coherence times up to 75 ns. Our results, combined with the recent advances in the spin qubit field, pave the way towards novel hybrid and protected qubits in a group IV, CMOS-compatible material.

We study a family of distance functions on rankings that allow for asymmetric treatments of alternatives and consider the distinct relevance of the top and bottom positions for ordered lists. We provide a full axiomatic characterization of our distance. In doing so, we retrieve new characterizations of existing axioms and show how to effectively weaken them for our purposes. This analysis highlights the generality of our distance as it embeds many (semi)metrics previously proposed in the literature. Subsequently, we show that, notwithstanding its level of generality, our distance is still readily applicable. We apply it to preference aggregation, studying the features of the associated median voting rule. It is shown how the derived preference function satisfies many desirable features in the context of voting rules, ranging from fairness to majority and Pareto-related properties. We show how to compute consensus rankings exactly, and provide generalized Diaconis-Graham inequalities that can be leveraged to obtain approximation algorithms. Finally, we propose some truncation ideas for our distances inspired by Lu and Boutilier (2010). These can be leveraged to devise a Polynomial-Time-Approximation Scheme for the corresponding rank aggregation problem., Comment: 64 pages

We study paycheck optimization, which examines how to allocate income in order to achieve several competing financial goals. For paycheck optimization, a quantitative methodology is missing, due to a lack of a suitable problem formulation. To deal with this issue, we formulate the problem as a utility maximization problem. The proposed formulation is able to (i) unify different financial goals; (ii) incorporate user preferences regarding the goals; (iii) handle stochastic interest rates. The proposed formulation also facilitates an end-to-end reinforcement learning solution, which is implemented on a variety of problem settings.

We investigate supercurrent nonreciprocal effects in a superconducting weak-link hosting distinct types of vortices. We demonstrate how the winding number of the vortex, its spatial configuration, and the shape of the superconducting lead can steer the sign and amplitude of the supercurrent rectification. We find a general criterion for the vortex pattern to maximize the rectification amplitude of the supercurrent. The underlying strategy is the search for specific vortex core positions yielding a vanishing amplitude of the supercurrent first harmonic. We also prove that supercurrent nonreciprocal effects can be used to diagnose high-winding vortex and to distinguish between different types of vorticity. Our results thus provide a toolkit to control the supercurrent rectification by means of vortex phase textures and nonreciprocal signatures to detect vortex states with nonstandard phase patterns., Comment: 14 pages and 12 figures

The causal inference model proposed by Lee (2008) for the regression discontinuity design (RDD) relies on assumptions that imply the continuity of the density of the assignment (running) variable. The test for this implication is commonly referred to as the manipulation test and is regularly reported in applied research to strengthen the design's validity. The multidimensional RDD (MRDD) extends the RDD to contexts where treatment assignment depends on several running variables. This paper introduces a manipulation test for the MRDD. First, it develops a theoretical model for causal inference with the MRDD, used to derive a testable implication on the conditional marginal densities of the running variables. Then, it constructs the test for the implication based on a quadratic form of a vector of statistics separately computed for each marginal density. Finally, the proposed test is compared with alternative procedures commonly employed in applied research.

We report the experimental discovery of orbital vortex lines in the three-dimensional (3D) band structure of a topological semimetal. Combining linear and circular dichroism in soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission (SX-ARPES) with first-principles theory, we image the winding of atomic orbital angular momentum, thereby revealing - and determining the location of - lines of vorticity in full 3D momentum space. Our observation of momentum-space vortex lines with quantized winding number establishes an analogue to real-space quantum vortices, for instance, in type-II superconductors and certain non-collinear magnets. These results establish multimodal dichroism in SX-ARPES as an approach to trace 3D orbital textures. Our present findings particularly constitute the first imaging of non-trivial quantum-phase winding at line nodes and may pave the way to new orbitronic phenomena in quantum materials

The aim of this note is to study the Cauchy problem for the 2D Euler equations under very low regularity assumptions on the initial datum. We prove propagation of regularity of logarithmic order in the class of weak solutions with $L^p$ initial vorticity, provided that $p\geq 4$. We explore the first-order phase transition in the lattice Schwinger model in the presence of a topological $\theta$-term by means of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). Using two different fermion discretizations, Wilson and staggered fermions, we develop parametric ansatz circuits suitable for both discretizations, and compare their performance by simulating classically an ideal VQE optimization in the absence of noise. The states obtained by the classical simulation are then prepared on the IBM's superconducting quantum hardware. Applying state-of-the art error-mitigation methods, we show that the electric field density and particle number, observables which reveal the phase structure of the model, can be reliably obtained from the quantum hardware. To investigate the minimum system sizes required for a continuum extrapolation, we study the continuum limit using matrix product states, and compare our results to continuum mass perturbation theory. We demonstrate that taking the additive mass renormalization into account is vital for enhancing the precision that can be obtained with smaller system sizes. Quantum computing provides a novel avenue towards simulating dynamical phenomena, and, in particular, scattering processes relevant for exploring the structure of matter. However, preparing and evolving particle wave packets on a quantum device is a nontrivial task. In this work, we propose a method to prepare Gaussian wave packets with momentum on top of the interacting ground state of a fermionic Hamiltonian. Using Givens rotation, we show how to efficiently obtain expectation values of observables throughout the evolution of the wave packets on digital quantum computers. We demonstrate our technique by applying it to the staggered lattice formulation of the Thirring model and studying the scattering of two wave packets. Monitoring the particle density and the entropy produced during the scattering process, we characterize the phenomenon and provide a first step towards studying more complicated collision processes on digital quantum computers. In addition, we perform a small-scale demonstration on IBM's quantum hardware, showing that our method is suitable for current and near-term quantum devices.

Consider a non-local (i.e., involving a convolution term) conservation law: when the convolution term converges to a Dirac delta, in the limit we formally recover a classical (or "local") conservation law. In this note we overview recent progress on this so-called non-local to local limit and in particular we discuss the case of anistropic kernels, which is extremely relevant in view of applications to traffic models. Back-action refers to a response that retro-acts on a system to tailor its properties with respect to an external stimulus. This effect is at the heart of many electronic devices such as amplifiers, oscillators, and sensors. Here, we demonstrate that back-action can be exploited to achieve non-reciprocal transport in superconducting circuits. In our devices, dissipationless current flows in one direction whereas dissipative transport occurs in the opposite direction. Supercurrent diodes presented so far rely on magnetic elements or vortices to mediate charge transport or external magnetic fields to break time-reversal symmetry. Back-action solely turns a conventional reciprocal superconducting weak link with no asymmetry between the current bias directions into a rectifier, where the critical current amplitude depends on the bias sign. The self-interaction of the supercurrent stems from the gate tunability of the critical current in metallic and semiconducting systems, which promotes nearly ideal magnetic field-free rectification with selectable polarity.

The goal of this paper is to study weak solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation. We first discuss existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in an irregular context, providing a unified treatment of the available literature along with some extensions. Then, we prove a regularity result for distributional solutions under suitable integrability assumptions, relying on a new, simple commutator estimate in the spirit of DiPerna-Lions' theory of renormalized solutions for the transport equation. Our result is somehow transverse to Theorem 4.3 of [15]: on the diffusion matrix we relax the assumption of Lipschitz regularity in time at the price of assuming Sobolev regularity in space, and we prove the regularity (and hence the uniqueness) of distributional solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation.

This work investigates a case study of using physical-based sonification of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems, optimized by the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. The VQE approximates the solution of the problem by using an iterative loop between the quantum computer and a classical optimization routine. This work explores the intermediary statevectors found in each VQE iteration as the means of sonifying the optimization process itself. The implementation was realised in the form of a musical interface prototype named Variational Quantum Harmonizer (VQH), providing potential design strategies for musical applications, focusing on chords, chord progressions, and arpeggios. The VQH can be used both to enhance data visualization or to create artistic pieces. The methodology is also relevant in terms of how an artist would gain intuition towards achieving a desired musical sound by carefully designing QUBO cost functions. In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, transport, thermodynamic and spectroscopic experiments pinpoint at a competition between distinct low-energy states with and without electronic order. We use Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) on the topological heavy Fermion (THF) model of twisted bilayer graphene to investigate the emergence of electronic correlations and long-range order in the absence of strain. We contrast moment formation, Kondo screening and ordering on a temperature basis and explain the nature of emergent correlated states based on three central phenomena: (i) the formation of local spin and valley isospin moments around 100K, (ii) the ordering of the local isospin moments around 10K preempting Kondo screening, and (iii) a cascadic redistribution of charge between localized and delocalized electronic states upon doping. At integer fillings, we find that low energy spectral weight is depleted in the symmetric phase, while we find insulating states with gaps enhanced by exchange coupling in the zero-strain ordered phases. Doping away from integer filling results in distinct metallic states: a "bad metal" above the ordering temperature, where scattering off the disordered local moments suppresses electronic coherence, and a "good metal" in the ordered states with coherence of quasiparticles facilitated by isospin order. This finding reveals coherence from order as the microscopic mechanism behind the Pomeranchuk effect observed experimentally. Upon doping, there is a periodic charge reshuffling between localized and delocalized electronic orbitals leading to cascades of doping-induced Lifshitz transitions, local spectral weight redistributions and periodic variations of the electronic compressibility.
