Background: This study examined whether Motivational Interviewing (MI) follow-up calls improved the extent to which a specific therapeutic technique (Key Word Sign) presented in training was retained and implemented by staff supporting people with an intellectual disability.Method: Thirty-eight residential support workers who attended Key Word Sign (KWS) training were divided into three groups. One group received post training MI follow-up calls, the second received non-MI "check-in control" (CIC) follow-up calls and the third received no follow-up calls.Results: Both follow-up conditions outperformed the no follow-up condition on KWS knowledge retention and use. No significant differences were noted between the MI and CIC condition in this study.Conclusion: The results highlight the value of post-training follow-up in promoting knowledge retention and implementation of skills. Methodological challenges (including treatment fidelity issues across groups) prevented firm conclusions about the impact of MI from being drawn.

A diferencia de otros trastornos mentales, no se ha establecido de forma precisa la prevalencia del trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo (TOC) en la población general. Algunas encuestas epidemiológicas determinaron la prevalencia del TOC diagnosticado con el DSM-III, siendo este, según los autores, uno de los primeros estudios que examina la prevalencia del TOC diagnosticado con el DSM-IV. Método: Se analizaron los datos de Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well-Being, una encuesta epidemiológica de los trastornos mentales, representativa del ámbito nacional. Objective: Relative to other mental disorders, the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in the general population is not well established. Some epidemiological surveys have determined the prevalence of DSM-llI OCD, but this is one of the first reports, to the authors' knowledge, of DSM-IV OCD's prevalence. Method: Data from the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well- Being, a nationally representative epidemiological survey of mental disorders, were analyzed. The prevalence and associated characteristics of DSM-IV OCD were identified, and then the data were rescored for DSM-III OCD. Cases defined by each system were compared. Results: The 12-month prevalence of DSM-IV OCD was 0.6%, considerably less than found in surveys employing DSM-III diagnostic criteria. DSM-IV OCD showed significantly higher levels of comorbidity, disability, health service use, and treatment received. Conclusions: Changes in the reported prevalence and severity of OCD between DSM-II1 and DSM-IV cases are most likely a function of the differences in diagnostic criteria between DSM-lll and DSM-lV.
