Background: Neuroscience is unlikely to produce findings for immediate application in the classroom. The educational significance and practical implications of knowledge about mind and brain inevitably require some level of interpretation, yet the multiplying examples of unscientific "brain-based" educational concepts suggest this process of interpretation is potentially problematic. Research is needed into the most appropriate ways of developing such concepts. Purpose: This paper reports on an attempt to develop a process of "co-construction" of pedagogical concepts, enriched by insights about the brain and the mind, with a group of trainee teachers led by a team with both educational and scientific expertise. Sample, design and methods: A research team consisting of two teacher trainers and a psychologist followed an action research spiral involving 16 trainee teachers who explored their own creativity, and the psychology and cognitive neuroscience of creativity in seminars, discussions and practical workshops, with the pedagogical aim of developing their own reflective capability. Results: Outcomes illustrated both dangers and opportunities associated with developing concepts bridging neuroscience and education. Trainees' understanding developed in stages that might broadly be described as initial enchantment, mythologizing, disenchantment, an increased focus on metacognition and, finally, a demonstrable ability to reflect on their own classroom practice with a heightened sensitivity to issues of underlying cognitive processes. Conclusions: The type of "co-construction" process reported here may help reduce some of the more popular and problematic misconceptions that arise when developing pedagogical concepts involving the brain and mind. Further research is needed to assess impact of such concepts upon practice. (Contains 2 figures.)

Background: Unplanned out-of-hospital birth is generally assumed to occur for women who are multiparous, have a history of a short pushing phase of labour or are experiencing a precipitate birth. However, there is little research that examines the woman's perspective regarding factors that influenced their decision on when to access care. This research aimed to explore women's experience of unplanned out-of-hospital birth in paramedic care. Due to the size of the data in the larger study of 'Women's experience of unplanned out-of-hospital birth in paramedic care' [1], this paper will deal directly with the women's narrative concerning her decision to access care and how previous birth experience and interactions with other healthcare professionals influenced her experience., Method: Narrative inquiry, underpinned from a feminist perspective, was used to guide the research. Twenty-two women who had experienced an unplanned out-of-hospital birth within the last 5 years in Queensland, Australia engaged in this research., Results: The decision of a woman in labour to attend hospital to birth her baby is influenced by information received from healthcare providers, fear of unnecessary medical intervention in birth, and previous birth experience. All themes and subthemes that emerged in the women's narratives relate to the notion of birth knowledge. These specifically include perceptions of what constitutes authoritative knowledge, who possesses the authoritative knowledge on which actions are based, and when and how women use their own embodied knowledge to assess the validity of healthcare workers' advice and the necessity for clinical intervention., Conclusions: The women interviewed communicated a tension between women's knowledge, beliefs and experience of the birth process, and the professional models of care traditionally associated with the hospital environment. It is essential that information provided to women antenatally is comprehensive and comprehensible. The decisions women make concerning their birth plan represent the women's expectations for their birth and this should be used as a means to openly communicate issues that may impact the birth experience.

Background: Healthcare literature describes predisposing factors, clinical risk, maternal and neonatal clinical outcomes of unplanned out-of-hospital birth; however, there is little quality research available that explores the experiences of mothers who birth prior to arrival at hospital., Methods: This study utilised a narrative inquiry methodology to explore the experiences of women who birth in paramedic care., Results: The inquiry was underscored by 22 narrative interviews of women who birthed in paramedic care in Queensland, Australia between 2011 and 2016. This data identified factors that contributed to the planned hospital birth occurring in the out-of-hospital setting. Women in this study began their story by discussing previous birth experience and their knowledge, expectations and personal beliefs concerning the birth process. Specific to the actual birth event, women reported feeling empowered, confident and exhilarated. However, some participants also identified concerns with paramedic practice; lack of privacy, poor interpersonal skills, and a lack of consent for certain procedures., Conclusions: This study identified several factors and a subset of factors that contributed to their experiences of the planned hospital birth occurring in the out-of-hospital setting. Women described opportunities for improvement in the care provided by paramedics, specifically some deficiencies in technical and interpersonal skills.

CD8(+) T cells use contact-dependent cytolysis of target cells to protect the host against intracellular pathogens. We have previously shown that CD8(+) T cells and perforin are required to protect against the extracellular pathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Here we establish an experimental system where CD8(+) T cells specific to a single model antigen are the only memory response present at time of challenge. Using mice immunized with a vaccine strain of Listeria monocytogenes that expresses secreted ovalbumin (Lm-OVA), we show that OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells are generated and provide limited protection against challenge with virulent OVA(+)Y. pseudotuberculosis. Perforin expression by OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells was required, as Lm-OVA-immunized perforin-deficient mice showed higher bacterial burden as compared to Lm-OVA-immunized perforin-sufficient mice. Surprisingly, antigen-specific T cell protection waned over time, as Lm-OVA-immune mice eventually succumbed to Yersinia infection. Kinetic analysis of infection in mice with and without OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells revealed that bacterial numbers increased sharply in OVA-naïve mice until death, while OVA-immune mice held bacterial burden to a lower level throughout the duration of illness until death. Clonal analysis of bacterial populations in OVA-naïve and OVA-immune mice at distinct time points revealed equivalent and severe bottle-neck effects for bacteria in both sets of mice immediately after intravenous challenge, demonstrating a dominant role for other aspects of the immune system regardless of CD8(+) T cell status. These studies indicate that CD8(+) T cells against a single antigen can restrict Y. pseudotuberculosis colonization in a perforin-dependent manner, but ultimately are insufficient in their ability to provide sterilizing immunity and protect against death., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has been described as a rising epidemic in recent years. The majority of subjects studied in PAD literature have been male, leaving female patients an underrepresented population with regard to revascularization outcomes. The goal of our study was to determine the death rate and predictors of mortality in female patients undergoing endovascular intervention (EI) for symptomatic PAD., Methods and Results: This study was conducted as a single-center retrospective chart review of 292 female patients who underwent EI for symptomatic PAD. Patient variables including demographics and procedural data were analyzed for statistical significance with regard to mortality. Age, history of congestive heart failure (CHF), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) were found to be significant predictors of mortality on multivariable analysis. A death risk score was formulated based on the above variables, risk stratifying patients into low, medium, or high risk groups for mortality after EI. Overall, 76 patients (26%) fell into the low risk category with a mortality of 5.3%, 102 patients (35%) fell into the moderate risk with a mortality of 15.7%, and 112 patients (39%) fell into the high-risk group with a mortality of 45.5% (P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Our study is the first of its kind to specify predictors of mortality in female patients with symptomatic PAD. This study also provides a tool to identify female PAD patients at high risk for death after EI. Recent studies in Xenopus laevis have begun to compare gene expression during regeneration with that of the original development of specific structures (e.g., the hindlimb and lens), while other studies have sought differences in gene expression between regeneration-competent and regeneration-incompetent stages. To determine whether there are any similarities between the regeneration of different structures, we have used a differential screen to seek shared early gene expression between hindlimb regeneration and cornea-lens transdifferentiation in the Xenopus tadpole. We have isolated 13 clones representing genes whose expression is up-regulated within the first few days of both regenerating processes and which are not demonstrably up-regulated in the context of basic wound healing. Furthermore, all of these genes also show prominent late embryonic expression. The expression patterns and putative identities of all 13 genes are presented, and a model is considered that allows us to characterize and profile important changes in gene expression, which might be shared among various regenerating and developmental systems., (Copyright 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Gastrin is a gastrointestinal (GI) peptide that possesses potent trophic effects on most of the normal and neoplastic mucosa of the GI tract. Despite abundant evidence for these properties, the mechanisms governing gastrin-induced proliferation are still largely unknown. To elucidate the mechanisms by which gastrin might influence mitogenesis in gastric adenocarcinoma, we analyzed its effects on the human cell line AGS-B. Amidated gastrin (G-17), one of the major circulating forms of gastrin, induced a concentration-dependent increase in [3H]thymidine incorporation of cells in culture, with the maximum effective concentration occurring with 20 nM G-17. This effect was significantly attenuated by the gastrin-specific receptor antagonist L-365260. In addition, we found that G-17 induced a significant increase in the levels of cyclin D1 transcripts, protein, and promoter activity. The results of these studies indicate that gastrin appears to exert its mitogenic effects on gastric adenocarcinoma, at least in part, through changes in cyclin D1 expression.
