Abstract

How can hate crime perpetrators commit their crimes and live with their consciences? This article takes a close look at how a small group of offenders explained their hate crimes against the Amish to others-and to themselves. The offenders used classic psychological techniques to rationalize their actions after the fact by dehumanizing and even blaming their victims. Examining the strategies that these offenders used sheds light on how hate crime offenders may fail to see their crimes as harmful or unjust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
