1. Supplementing Social Skills Training with Tootling to Simultaneously Enhance First-Grade Students' Performance of Two Social Skills

Abstract: While social skills training allows students to acquire social skills, often it does not enhance their performance of those skills outside the social skills training context. A withdrawal design was used to determine if a modified Tootling intervention could enhance at-risk, first-grade students' performance of two recently trained social skills (complimenting and encouraging) as they played. Following social skills training, baseline data was collected as students played a modified Jenga game in small groups. During the intervention phase, a Tootling intervention was added and the class earned a group reward contingent upon their reports of peers engaging in these recently trained social skills. After Tootling was withdrawn, it was reinstated. Analysis of class-wide data shows immediate and large (effect size estimates) increases in compliments and encouragements each time Tootling was applied, and an immediate decrease when Tootling was withdrawn. These findings suggest that the modified Tootling intervention enhanced performance of these social skills while students played. Discussion focuses on future research designed to determine if Tootling can cause meaningful increases in social skill development by increasing students' performance of social skills across social contexts.

2. Enhancing First-Grade Students' Social Skill Performance: The Interaction of Tootling and Activities on Social Skill Engagement

Abstract: We extended research on social skills training to determine if the activities first-grade students were engaged in while Tootling would influence their performance of two recently trained social skills: complimenting and encouraging peers. After receiving social skills training, students engaged in two experimental small-group activities, a cooperative activity and a parallel-play activity. During both activities, a Tootling intervention was applied and interdependent group rewards (e.g., every student in the class receives the reward) were delivered contingent upon the number of peer reports of classmates providing compliments and encouragements meeting an unknown, randomly selected criterion. Students also engaged in their typical classroom activity, an individual competition, without Tootling. Statistical analysis indicated that during the cooperative-play activity there were significantly higher levels of complimenting and encouraging than during the parallel-play and individual competition activities. More compliments were delivered during the parallel-play activity than during the individual competition, but there was no significant difference in encouragements across the two conditions. Also, during the parallel-play activity, compliments where higher than encouragements. These findings suggest that after social skills training, Tootling can enhance social skill performance when educators schedule activities that provide opportunities to engage in these recently trained skills. Discussion focuses on task and goal structures associated with activities and applied implications for enhancing social skill development.

3. Thermovibrationally-driven flows and particle accumulation in microgravity environments

Abstract: In the present work, thermovibrationally-driven flows and ensuing particle accumulation phenomena are studied in the context of a microgravity environment. The problem is addressed numerically through solution of the governing equations for fluid flow and particle transport (Eulerian-Lagrangian one-way coupled approach). This work follows a logical approach with cases of increasing complexity being analysed as the discussion progresses, in particular, first the properties of this type of fluid flow are investigated in the single-phase (pure fluid) situation considering both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) geometries. Then the multiphase problem, resulting from the addition of solid particles, is examined. The role played by the direction of the vibrations with respect to the temperature gradient is also investigated. Starting from the situation with concurrent vibrations and temperature difference (parallel case), it is shown that complexity of this situation essentially stems from the properties that are inherited from the corresponding case with steady gravity, i.e., the standard Rayleigh-B´enard convection. The need to overcome a threshold to induce convection from an initial quiescent state, together with the opposite tendency of acceleration to damp fluid motion when its sign is reversed, causes a variety of possible solutions that can display synchronous, non-synchronous, time-periodic, and multi-frequency responses. Moreover, as the constraint of two-dimensionality is removed, the intrinsically three-dimensional nature of the problem and its sensitivity to the thermal boundary conditions can have a remarkable influence on the multiplicity of emerging solutions and the system temporal response even if a geometry as simple as a cubic enclosure is considered. If solid particles are added to the fluid, the hallmark of the phenomena occurring in this case is an endless squeezing and expansion of particle formations along the direction of the temperature gradient. A kaleidoscope of previously unknown solutions is also reported for the situation with vibrations perpendicular to the temperature gradient (perpendicular case) giving emphasis to some still poorly known aspects such as the complex nature of the textural transitions undergone by the time-averaged flow as the Gershuni number is increased. Chaotic states are enabled when larger frequencies of vibration are considered. When particles are added in these cases, while clusters with a perfect (very regular and stationary) morphology emerge in laminar flow, when thermovibrational flow is chaotic the topology of the structures is relatively irregular and time-dependent. Nevertheless, precise trends and relationships can be established if specific problem 'statistics' are connected to the behaviour of the temporally evolving structures. Finally, cases are considered where the imposed temperature gradient is not unidirectional, i.e. the direction of such a gradient is allowed to change inside the fluid. The relationship between the multiplicity (N) of the loci of particle attraction and the inhomogeneities in the temperature field is studied. It is shown that N can exceed the limit N = 2 found in earlier studies and that a zoo of new particle accumulation structures show up, whose ranges of existence depend on the amplitude and frequency of vibrational acceleration, the particle Stokes number, the orientation of vibrations, and the number of inversions in the direction of the temperature gradient. Some experimental activities conducted to support the so-called PARTICLE VIBRATION microgravity experiment are also presented.

4. Tootling: A Classwide Peer-Mediated Intervention for Decreasing Antisocial and Disruptive Behavior and Enhancing Prosocial Behaviors and Academic Engagement

Abstract: Tootling is a classwide, peer-mediated intervention created to encourage desired classroom behaviors and enhance students' awareness of classmates' incidental prosocial behaviors (Cashwell et al., 2001; Skinner et al., 2000). This intervention was named Tootling by combining the word "tattling," which is a type of peer reporting, and the phrase "toot your own horn," which is a way of reporting desired behaviors (Skinner et al., 2002). When tattling, peers report classmates' incidental antisocial or undesired behaviors. Tootling interventions encourage students to tootle, or report, classmates' incidental prosocial behaviors. Developing, installing, and maintaining Tootling interventions requires working through several steps. Each step is necessary but can be modified. This article describes each of the following seven steps and how the interventions can be modified: (1) Select the prosocial behaviors; (2) Teach students how to engage in the prosocial behaviors; (3) Select group rewards; (4) Establish group criteria; (5) Develop and train in peer reporting procedures; (6) Describe the procedures for obtaining group rewards; and (7) Begin Tootling.

5. Advanced airway management for pre-hospital trauma patients

Abstract: Poor airway management in severely injured patients is a source of significant morbidity and mortality and frequently identified as a cause of preventable death in this group of patients. Traditionally the majority of patients have not received definitive airway management until arrival at hospital and those patients who were sufficiently obtunded on scene to tolerate tracheal intubation without the use of drugs had a universally poor outcome. Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) is now a recognised medical subspecialty and is usually delivered by doctors and paramedics with specific training in this field. The development of this subspecialty has increased the practice of Pre-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia (PHEA). Despite improvements in the delivery of PHEM and consequently of PHEA, controversy surrounding this intervention exists and it has failed to demonstrate an obvious survival benefit. This thesis sets out to further examine the practice of PHEA and attempt to establish why this intervention does not appear to be reducing mortality in patients who have sustained major trauma. I designed and developed studies to address a number of key questions including whether there is a requirement for PHEA, the potential benefit of it, and to identify areas of practice that can be improved. Through studies conducted at a local and national level I have been able to provide evidence that not only is PHEA an essential and beneficial intervention for a subset of major trauma patients, but also that there is a demand for this intervention which is not met by the current prehospital practice and infrastructure in the UK.

6. Using a Tootling Intervention to Sequentially Enhance and Maintain At-Risk Elementary Students' Performance of Multiple Social Skills

Abstract: The present study was designed to extend research on supplementing social skills training (SST) with a Tootling intervention to enhance student performance of social skills in authentic social contexts. The Tootling intervention included an interdependent group contingency with randomly selected criteria, which involved the after-school class receiving rewards contingent upon students reporting classmates' performance of prosocial behaviors as they participated in a typical school activity. First, reinforcement was delivered contingent upon peer reports of classmates' giving compliments. In subsequent phases, peer reports of classmates providing encouragement and saying thank you were added to the contingency, but each day students did not know which of these behaviors was selected as the criterion for reinforcement. Results from our multiple baseline across behaviors design provided three demonstrations of a treatment effect. When peer reports of each social skill were added to the contingency, the targeted social behavior increased. Discussion focuses on supplementing SST with Tootling interventions to enhance student performance of prosocial behaviors outside the SST context.

7. Alternating Treatments Designs: Interpretation Challenges and Design Solutions for Validating and Comparing Interventions

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and describe why alternating treatments design (ATD) researchers should consider employing a no-treatment series during the alternating treatments phase. To identify limitations associated with excluding this design element, we obtained examples of ATD studies published in five school psychology journals published over 10 years. Next we read, scored, and analyzed these articles with our primary focus being authors' isolated and comparative effectiveness conclusions. After taking into account authors' relative effectiveness conclusions, we describe why some isolated treatment effectiveness conclusions may not be warranted because threats to internal validity were not controlled. Also, we describe how including a no-treatment series during the alternating treatments phase can address these limitations by allowing researchers to assess and possibly rule out many threats to internal validity. Discussion focuses on how including this design element may increase the number of studies validating specific interventions, yield better relative effectiveness conclusions, and prevent researchers and consumers of research from concluding that an intervention was effective when observed changes were caused by uncontrolled threats to internal validity.

9. Interdependent Group-Oriented Contingencies: Randomly Selected Components to the Rescue

Abstract: Class-wide academic performance can be increased by overlaying existing instructional and classroom management procedures with supplemental interdependent group-oriented bonus rewards. The bonus reward strategies may be particularly effective for under-motivated, low-performing students. When applying supplemental interdependent group-oriented bonus rewards, rewards are delivered to all members of a class for meeting a group-oriented performance criterion. A description of supplemental interdependent group-oriented bonus rewards is provided, followed by reasons for using unknown, randomly-selected rewards and criteria for earning rewards. Guidelines for establishing a pool of possible rewards and criteria are provided that are designed to allow teachers to develop their own supplemental interdependent group-oriented bonus rewards.

10. Using Tootling to Enhance First-Grade Students' Use of a Social Skill: Evaluating the Catching Compliments Game

Abstract: A withdrawal design was used to evaluate the effects of a tootling intervention targeting a specific, recently trained social skill, providing compliments, displayed by first-grade students while they engaged in a regularly scheduled, small-group math activity. The tootling intervention, called the Catching Compliments Game, included publicly posted feedback and an interdependent group-oriented contingency, which involved the entire class earning rewards for reporting their observations of classmates providing compliments. Visual analysis of a repeated-measures graph suggested that the intervention caused immediate increases in students' complimenting peers while engaged in a small-group math activity. These results extend research on tootling interventions by providing evidence that they can cause increases in the behaviors that students are reporting, in this case, students complimenting peers. Discussion focuses on study limitations, future research, and the applied implications associated with supplementing social skills training with tootling.

12. Evaluating English Learner Progress in Reading: How Much Growth Can We Expect?

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore whether or not English learners (ELs) have the same annual rates of reading progress as non-EL counterparts in Grades 1 through 3 when accounting for beginning-of-the-year reading levels, economic disadvantage, and classroom effects. Though significant differences between ELs and non-ELs were found, regression analyses indicated that large portions of the differences in growth between ELs and non-ELs are attributable to economic disadvantage and classroom effects, suggesting that contextual variables matter more than English language status. Furthermore, a large portion of ELs from across English oral language proficiency levels make typical or well above typical progress. These results suggest that interventionists should use the same goal setting and intervention evaluation procedures for EL students that are used in the general population. Rather than lowering expectations for reading progress, educators should boost intervention potency when ELs are not meeting growth goals.

Abstract: CDMS II data from the 5-tower runs at the Soudan Underground Laboratory were reprocessed with an improved charge-pulse fitting algorithm. Two new analysis techniques to reject surface-event backgrounds were applied to the 612 kg days germanium-detector WIMP-search exposure. An extended analysis was also completed by decreasing the 10 keV analysis threshold to $\sim$5 keV, to increase sensitivity near a WIMP mass of 8 GeV/$c^2$. After unblinding, there were zero candidate events above a deposited energy of 10 keV and 6 events in the lower-threshold analysis. This yielded minimum WIMP-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section limits of $1.8 \times 10^{-44}$ and $1.18 \times 10 ^{-41}$ cm$^2$ at 90\% confidence for 60 and 8.6 GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs, respectively. Abstract: We examine the consequences of the effective field theory (EFT) of dark matter-nucleon scattering for current and proposed direct detection experiments. Exclusion limits on EFT coupling constants computed using the optimum interval method are presented for SuperCDMS Soudan, CDMS II, and LUX, and the necessity of combining results from multiple experiments in order to determine dark matter parameters is discussed. We demonstrate that spectral differences between the standard dark matter model and a general EFT interaction can produce a bias when calculating exclusion limits and when developing signal models for likelihood and machine learning techniques. 16. Apnoeic oxygenation for emergency anaesthesia of pre-hospital trauma patients

Abstract: Abstract Background Efficient and timely airway management is universally recognised as a priority for major trauma patients, a proportion of whom require emergency intubation in the pre-hospital setting. Adverse events occur more commonly in emergency airway management, and hypoxia is relatively frequent. The aim of this study was to establish whether passive apnoeic oxygenation was effective in reducing the incidence of desaturation during pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia. Methods A prospective before-after study was performed to compare patients receiving standard care and those receiving additional oxygen via nasal prongs. The primary endpoint was median oxygen saturation in the peri-rapid sequence induction period, (2 minutes pre-intubation to 2 minutes post-intubation) for all patients. Secondary endpoints included the incidence of hypoxia in predetermined subgroups. Results Of 725 patients included; 188 patients received standard treatment and 537 received the intervention. The overall incidence of hypoxia (first recorded SpO2 95%, p = 0.0001. The other significant benefit was observed in the recovery phase for patients with severe hypoxia prior to intubation. Conclusion Apnoeic oxygenation did not influence peri-intubation oxygen saturations, but it did reduce the frequency and duration of hypoxia in the post-intubation period. Given that apnoeic oxygenation is a simple low-cost intervention with a low complication rate, and that hypoxia can be detrimental to outcome, application of nasal cannulas during the drug-induced phase of emergency intubation may benefit a subset of patients undergoing emergency anaesthesia.

Abstract: We report on the results of a search for a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) signal in low-energy data of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS~II) experiment using a maximum likelihood analysis. A background model is constructed using GEANT4 to simulate the surface-event background from $^{210}$Pb decay-chain events, while using independent calibration data to model the gamma background. Fitting this background model to the data results in no statistically significant WIMP component. In addition, we perform fits using an analytic ad hoc background model proposed by Collar and Fields, who claimed to find a large excess of signal-like events in our data. Abstract: We report a first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the background rejection capabilities of SuperCDMS. An exposure of 577 kg-days was analyzed for WIMPs with mass < 30 GeV/c2, with the signal region blinded. Eleven events were observed after unblinding. We set an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of 1.2e-42 cm2 at 8 GeV/c2. Abstract: CDMS II data from the five-tower runs at the Soudan Underground Laboratory were reprocessed with an improved charge-pulse fitting algorithm. Two new analysis techniques to reject surface-event backgrounds were applied to the 612 kg days germanium-detector weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-search exposure. An extended analysis was also completed by decreasing the 10 keV analysis threshold to ∼5keV, to increase sensitivity near a WIMP mass of 8GeV/c2. After unblinding, there were zero candidate events above a deposited energy of 10 keV and six events in the lower-threshold analysis. This yielded minimum WIMP-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section limits of 1.8×10-44 and 1.18×10-41 at 90% confidence for 60 and 8.6GeV/c2 WIMPs, respectively. This improves the previous CDMS II result by a factor of 2.4 (2.7) for 60 (8.6)GeV/c2 WIMPs.

Abstract: We examine the consequences of the effective field theory (EFT) of dark matter-nucleon scattering for current and proposed direct detection experiments. Exclusion limits on EFT coupling constants computed using the optimum interval method are presented for SuperCDMS Soudan, CDMS II, and LUX, and the necessity of combining results from multiple experiments in order to determine dark matter parameters is discussed. We demonstrate that spectral differences between the standard dark matter model and a general EFT interaction can produce a bias when calculating exclusion limits and when developing signal models for likelihood and machine learning techniques. We also discuss the implications of the EFT for the next-generation (G2) direct detection experiments and point out regions of complementarity in the EFT parameter space.

Abstract: We report on the results of a search for a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) signal in low-energy data of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment using a maximum likelihood analysis. A background model is constructed using geant4 to simulate the surface-event background from Pb210 decay-chain events, while using independent calibration data to model the gamma background. Fitting this background model to the data results in no statistically significant WIMP component. In addition, we perform fits using an analytic ad hoc background model proposed by Collar and Fields, who claimed to find a large excess of signal-like events in our data. We confirm the strong preference for a signal hypothesis in their analysis under these assumptions, but excesses are observed in both single- and multiple-scatter events, which implies the signal is not caused by WIMPs, but rather reflects the inadequacy of their background model.

Abstract: SuperCDMS is an experiment designed to directly detect Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), a favored candidate for dark matter ubiquitous in the Universe. In this paper, we present WIMP-search results using a calorimetric technique we call CDMSlite, which relies on voltage- assisted Luke-Neganov amplification of the ionization energy deposited by particle interactions. The data were collected with a single 0.6 kg germanium detector running for 10 live days at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Abstract: The SuperCDMS experiment in the Soudan Underground Laboratory searches for dark matter with a 9-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors. Symmetric sensors on opposite sides measure both charge and phonons from each particle interaction, providing excellent discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils, and between surface and interior events. Surface event rejection capabilities were tested with two $^{210}$Pb sources producing $\sim$130 beta decays/hr. In $\sim$800 live hours, no events leaked into the 8--115 keV signal region, giving upper limit leakage fraction $1.7 \times 10^{-5}$ at 90% C.L., corresponding to $< 0.6$ surface event background in the future 200-kg SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to journal

Abstract: We report results of a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPS) with the silicon detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This blind analysis of 140.2 kg-days of data taken between July 2007 and September 2008 revealed three WIMP-candidate events with a surface-event background estimate of 0.41^{+0.20}_{-0.08}(stat.)^{+0.28}_{-0.24}(syst.). Other known backgrounds from neutrons and 206Pb are limited to < 0.13 and <0.08 events at the 90% confidence level, respectively. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 23.4 kg-days for a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for a WIMP of mass 10 GeV/c2. The probability that the known backgrounds would produce three or more events in the signal region is 5.4%. A profile likelihood ratio test of the three events that includes the measured recoil energies gives a 0.19% probability for the known-background-only hypothesis when tested against the alternative WIMP+background hypothesis. The highest likelihood occurs for a WIMP mass of 8.6 GeV/c2 and WIMP-nucleon cross section of 1.9e-41 cm2., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, as accepted by PRL

Abstract: We report results of a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with the Si detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This report describes a blind analysis of the first data taken with CDMS II's full complement of detectors in 2006-2007; results from this exposure using the Ge detectors have already been presented. We observed no candidate WIMP-scattering events in an exposure of 55.9 kg-days before analysis cuts, with an expected background of ~1.1 events. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 10.3 kg-days over a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for an ideal Si detector and a WIMP mass of 10 GeV/c2. These data set an upper limit of 1.7x10-41 cm2 on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of a 10 GeV/c2 WIMP. These data exclude parameter space for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering that is relevant to recent searches for low-mass WIMPs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; updated to match published version

Abstract: Within the vast array of variants encompassed by thermal (buoyancy) convection, the particular interest of the present work is on the specific dynamics which are enabled when standard steady gravity is replaced by a time-periodic body force induced by vibrations. The study is designed as a set of separate problems, where each exemplar aims to unravel the implications of the fundamental properties of this type of flow. These include the symmetry of the emerging pattern as perceived by a real observer and as seen in a “time-averaged space”, the synchronous or non-synchronous response of the velocity field to the applied forcing, the magnitude of the so-called Thermofluid-dynamic (TFD) distortions and the peculiar route of evolution towards chaos. A kaleidoscope of previously unknown solutions is reported giving emphasis to some still poorly known aspects such as the complex nature of the textural transitions that take place in the flow as the Gershuni number is increased (from 3.30 × 102 to 5.00 × 107 for Pr = 15). It is shown that the low-frequency regime is relatively stable over this range. In addition to the standard quadrupolar pattern, in such a case peculiar convective structures emerge where the time-averaged rolls display a very regular columnar arrangement, which has been rarely observed in earlier studies. Chaotic states are enabled when larger frequencies of vibration are considered. While for intermediate frequencies concurrent aspects of the Feigenbaum and Manneville and Pomeau mechanisms can be recognized, the hallmark of the high frequency regime is its adherence to the standard Ruelle-Takens scenario.

Abstract: SuperCDMS is an experiment designed to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), a favored candidate for dark matter ubiquitous in the Universe. In this Letter, we present WIMP-search results using a calorimetric technique we call CDMSlite, which relies on voltage-assisted Luke-Neganov amplification of the ionization energy deposited by particle interactions. The data were collected with a single 0.6 kg germanium detector running for ten live days at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. A low energy threshold of 170 eVee (electron equivalent) was obtained, which allows us to constrain new WIMP-nucleon spin-independent parameter space for WIMP masses below 6 GeV/c2.

34. Supplementing Social Skills Training With Tootling to Simultaneously Enhance First-Grade Students' Performance of Two Social Skills.

Abstract: While social skills training allows students to acquire social skills, often it does not enhance their performance of those skills outside the social skills training context. A withdrawal design was used to determine if a modified Tootling intervention could enhance at-risk, first-grade students' performance of two recently trained social skills (complimenting and encouraging) as they played. Following social skills training, baseline data was collected as students played a modified Jenga game in small groups. During the intervention phase, a Tootling intervention was added and the class earned a group reward contingent upon their reports of peers engaging in these recently trained social skills. After Tootling was withdrawn, it was reinstated. Analysis of class-wide data shows immediate and large (effect size estimates) increases in compliments and encouragements each time Tootling was applied, and an immediate decrease when Tootling was withdrawn. These findings suggest that the modified Tootling intervention enhanced performance of these social skills while students played. Discussion focuses on future research designed to determine if Tootling can cause meaningful increases in social skill development by increasing students' performance of social skills across social contexts. Impact Statement Social skills training allows students to acquire social skills, but typically does not result in students performing these behaviors in other social contexts. A peer-mediated intervention known as Tootling, which involves students being reinforced for reporting classmates' performance of recently trained social skills (i.e., providing encouragements and compliments), caused large and immediate increases in first-grade students' performance of these prosocial behaviors as they engaged in a small-group game. Abstract: Abstract Background Effective and timely airway management is a priority for sick and injured patients. The benefit and conduct of pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia (PHEA) and advanced airway management remains controversial but there are a proportion of critically ill and injured patients who require urgent advanced airway management prior to hospital arrival. This document provides current best practice advice for the provision of PHEA and advanced airway management. Method This best practice advice was developed from EHAC Medical Working Group enforced by pre-hospital critical care experts. The group used a nominal group technique to establish the current best practice for the provision of PHEA and advanced airway management. The group met on three separate occasions to discuss and develop the guideline. All members of the working party were able to access and edit the guideline online. Results This EHAC best practice advice covers all areas of PHEA and advanced airway management and provides up to date evidence of current best practice. Conclusion PHEA and advanced airway management are complex interventions that should be delivered by appropriately trained personnel using a well-rehearsed approach and standardised equipment. Where advanced airway interventions cannot be delivered, careful attention should be given to applying basic airway interventions and ensuring their effectiveness at all times.

Abstract: The SuperCDMS experiment in the Soudan Underground Laboratory searches for dark matter with a 9-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors. Symmetric sensors on opposite sides measure both charge and phonons from each particle interaction, providing excellent discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils, and between surface and interior events. Surface event rejection capabilities were tested with two 210Pb sources producing ∼130 beta decays/hr. In ∼800 live hours, no events leaked into the 8-115 keV signal region, giving upper limit leakage fraction 1.7 × 10-5 at 90% C.L., corresponding to < 0.6 surface event background in the future 200-kg SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: We report results of a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with the Si detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This report describes a blind analysis of the first data taken with CDMS II's full complement of detectors in 2006-2007; results from this exposure using the Ge detectors have already been presented. We observed no candidate WIMP-scattering events in an exposure of 55.9 kg-days before analysis cuts, with an expected background of ∼1.1 events. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 10.3 kg-days over a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for an ideal Si detector and a WIMP mass of 10 GeV/c2. These data set an upper limit of 1.7×10-41 cm2 on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of a 10 GeV/c2 WIMP. These data exclude parameter space for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering that is relevant to recent searches for low-mass WIMPs. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: This report details the schedule and results of hydraulic testing of the TH0424 ground investigation borehole at the UK Geoenergy Observatory (UKGeos) Cheshire borehole array, Thornton Science Park during October 2022. UKGeos aims to establish new centres for world-leading research into the subsurface environment, generating data and knowledge to inform responsible development of new subsurface technologies (https://www.ukgeos.ac.uk/). Observatories are currently being developed at Thornton Science Park (TSP) in Cheshire (near the villages of Thornton and Elton), and near the Cuningar Loop of the River Clyde, Glasgow. Hydraulic testing was conducted using a straddle packer system to allow for isolated testing through the entire length of the water column, and to isolate specific features of interest (e.g. fractures, low permeability zones etc.), employing step and constant rate pumping test methodologies to provide response data that can be applied to hydraulic property models. The isolation of specific zones also allowed for the opportunity to collect groundwater samples and hydrochemical parameters, providing a profile of hydrochemical composition. The straddle packer system allows characterisation of dominant flow paths within the borehole and thus will aid in informing the design of multilevel monitoring boreholes within the array. This report does not serve as an interpretation of the collected data (although some basic analysis is undertaken), but rather aims to provide context to the collected dataset that can be utilised by the wider scientific research community. Development of the site at the time of testing (drilling of boreholes in close proximity) resulted in sub-optimal conditions for hydraulic testing and thus some data have been impacted by these activities. Abstract: In 2022 BGS was commissioned by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) to undertake desk and field investigations to develop a conceptual understanding of the contribution of groundwater to streamflow during drought in the Afon Fathew, Wales. This report details the findings of these investigations. In addition to a desk study, two field visits were completed to survey water features in the catchment, take samples for groundwater residence time indicators, and undertake a passive seismic (Tromino) geophysical survey. The results of the desk study and field visits were combined with flow accretion profile data to develop a conceptual model of groundwater flow to the Afon Fathew during drought, described herein. The Fathew is underlain by a bedrock of silty mudstones which are traditionally considered to be poor aquifers. In the Fathew catchment there is evidence from boreholes for local-scale groundwater flow in the bedrock within fractures and other discontinuities. An upper weathered layer, in combination with faulting and folding patterns, is likely to control the geometry and magnitude of bedrock groundwater flow systems and the location of springs. The residence time indicator data suggest that groundwater in the bedrock is over 40 years old. Estimated discharge from bedrock springs (< 2 l/s, 0.17 Ml/day) is very small relative to the total flow in the Fathew and tributary inflows. The Tromino has shown the superficial deposits in the catchment to be highly heterogeneous in the valley bottom. Changes in the likely permeability and areal extent of the superficial deposits going down the valley bottom correspond to changes in river flows in the Fathew based on the accretion profiles. The Fathew and its tributaries are losing over well drained alluvial gravels, and gaining over low permeability lacustrine and clay-ey alluvial deposits. Abstract: The present study was designed to extend research on supplementing social skills training (SST) with a Tootling intervention to enhance student performance of social skills in authentic social contexts. The Tootling intervention included an interdependent group contingency with randomly selected criteria, which involved the after-school class receiving rewards contingent upon students reporting classmates' performance of prosocial behaviors as they participated in a typical school activity. First, reinforcement was delivered contingent upon peer reports of classmates' giving compliments. In subsequent phases, peer reports of classmates providing encouragement and saying thank you were added to the contingency, but each day students did not know which of these behaviors was selected as the criterion for reinforcement. Results from our multiple baseline across behaviors design provided three demonstrations of a treatment effect. When peer reports of each social skill were added to the contingency, the targeted social behavior increased. Discussion focuses on supplementing SST with Tootling interventions to enhance student performance of prosocial behaviors outside the SST context. Abstract: Thermovibrational flow can be seen as a variant of standard thermogravitational convection where steady gravity is replaced by a time-periodic acceleration. As in the parent phenomena, this type of thermal flow is extremely sensitive to the relative directions of the acceleration and the prevailing temperature gradient. Starting from the realization that the overwhelming majority of research has focused on circumstances where the directions of vibrations and of the imposed temperature difference are perpendicular, we concentrate on the companion case in which they are parallel. The increased complexity of this situation essentially stems from the properties that are inherited from the corresponding case with steady gravity, i.e., the standard Rayleigh–Bénard convection. The need to overcome a threshold to induce convection from an initial quiescent state, together with the opposite tendency of acceleration to damp fluid motion when its sign is reversed, causes a variety of possible solutions that can display synchronous, non-synchronous, time-periodic, and multi-frequency responses. Assuming a square cavity as a reference case and a fluid with Pr = 15, we tackle the problem in a numerical framework based on the solution of the governing time-dependent and non-linear equations considering different amplitudes and frequencies of the applied vibrations. The corresponding vibrational Rayleigh number spans the interval from Raω = 104 to Raω = 106. It is shown that a kaleidoscope of possible variants exist whose nature and variety calls for the simultaneous analysis of their temporal and spatial behavior, thermofluid-dynamic (TFD) distortions, and the Nusselt number, in synergy with existing theories on the effect of periodic accelerations on fluid systems.
