Abstract

We investigate geometric aspects of co-equational parametric resurgence, by studying physical problems whose formal asymptotic solutions give rise to Borel transforms lying on an algebraic curve. This perspective allows us to elucidate concepts unique to parametric resurgence such as singularity structures, (virtual) turning points and the higher-order Stokes phenomenon. We construct examples as solutions to Borel plane partial differential equations using an algebraic curve ansatz before turning to the general analytic structure of co-equational resurgence problems, where we provide a systematic description of analytic continuation and Stokes constants through a Borel plane inner-outer matching procedure., Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. 3. $\text{AdS}_4$ Holography and the Hilbert Scheme

Abstract

We elucidate a holographic relationship between the enumerative geometry of the Hilbert scheme of $N$ points in the plane $\mathbb{C}^2$, with $N$ large, and the entropy of certain magnetically charged black holes with $\text{AdS}_4$ asymptotics. Specifically, we demonstrate how the entropy functional arises from the asymptotics of 't Hooft and Wilson line operators in a 3d $\mathcal{N}= 4$ gauge theory. The gauge-Bethe correspondence allows us to interpret this calculation in terms of the enumerative geometry of the Hilbert scheme and thereby conjecture that the entropy is saturated by expectation values of certain natural operators in the quantum $K$-theory ring acting on the localised $K$-theory of the Hilbert scheme. We give numerical evidence that the large $N$ limit is saturated by contributions from a certain vacuum/fixed point on the Hilbert scheme, associated to a particular triangular-shaped Young diagram, by evolving solutions to the Bethe equations numerically at finite (but large) $N$ towards the classical limit. We thus conjecture a concrete geometric holographic dual of the so-called gravitational/Cardy block., Comment: 46 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Deep learning-based mammographic evaluations could noninvasively assess response to breast cancer chemoprevention. We evaluated change in a convolutional neural network-based breast cancer risk model applied to mammograms among women enrolled in SWOG S0812, which randomly assigned 208 premenopausal high-risk women to receive oral vitamin D3 20 000 IU weekly or placebo for 12 months. We applied the convolutional neural network model to mammograms collected at baseline (n = 109), 12 months (n = 97), and 24 months (n = 67) and compared changes in convolutional neural network-based risk score between treatment groups. Change in convolutional neural network-based risk score was not statistically significantly different between vitamin D and placebo groups at 12 months (0.005 vs 0.002, P = .875) or at 24 months (0.020 vs 0.001, P = .563). The findings are consistent with the primary analysis of S0812, which did not demonstrate statistically significant changes in mammographic density with vitamin D supplementation compared with placebo. There is an ongoing need to evaluate biomarkers of response to novel breast cancer chemopreventive agents.

5. 'They Burn so Bright Whilst You Can Only Wonder Why': Stories at the Intersection of Social Class, Capital and Critical Information Literacy -- A Collaborative Autoethnography

Abstract

In this article we connect critical librarianship and its practices of information literacy (IL) with working-class experiences of higher education (HE). Although the research literature and professional body of knowledge of critical information literacy (CIL), is one of the most theoretically-developed areas of wider critical librarianship (Critlib) movement, working-class knowledge and experiences remain underrepresented. One reason for this is that the values, behaviour and assumptions of library and HE workers are shaped by a HE system which inculcates middle-class values and cultural capitals within students, and stigmatises working-class students as lacking or in deficit. Hegemonic, or noncritical, IL proselytises middle-class values and assumptions about academic practices and skills development including the notion of an ideal student with behaviour and markers of identity which reflect those most privileged by wider society. In contrast CIL, framed as "the" socially-just practice of IL is theoretically well-placed to support working-class library workers in destabilising this alongside middle-class accomplices. Employing Yosso's (2005) concept of community and cultural wealth (CCW), we analyse how library workers can recognise working-class cultural wealth within the context of CIL and wider working practices. As such narrative accounts are lacking in the literature, we utilise collaborative autoethnography (CAE) (Chang et al., 2013) to consider and interpret our own experiences of libraries when we were university students ourselves, and more recently as HE workers of working-class heritage.

Abstract

3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. Abstract

Singularly-perturbed ordinary differential equations often exhibit Stokes' phenomenon, which describes the appearance and disappearance of oscillating exponentially small terms across curves in the complex plane known as Stokes curves. These curves originate at singular points in the leading-order solution to the differential equation. In many important problems, it is impossible to obtain a closed-form expression for these leading-order solutions, and it is therefore challenging to locate these singular points. We present evidence that the analytic leading-order solution of a linear differential equation can be replaced with a rational approximation based on a numerical leading-order solution using the adaptive Antoulas-Anderson (AAA) method. We show that the subsequent exponential asymptotic analysis accurately predicts the exponentially small behaviour present in the solution. We explore the limitations of this approach, and show that for sufficiently small values of the asymptotic parameter, this approach breaks down; however, the range of validity may be extended by increasing the number of poles in the rational approximation. We finish by presenting a related nonlinear problem and discussing the challenges that arise when attempting to apply this method to nonlinear problems., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations carried out in 2018 April at 1.3 mm wavelengths included 9 stations in the array, comprising 7 single-dish telescopes and 2 phased arrays. The metadata package for the 2018 EHT observing campaign contains calibration tables required for the a-priori amplitude calibration of the 2018 April visibility data. This memo is the official documentation accompanying the release of the 2018 EHT metadata package, providing an overview of the contents of the package. Abstract

In a 3-arm presurgical trial, four-six weeks exemestane 25 mg three times/week (TIW) was non-inferior to 25 mg/day (QD) in suppressing circulating estradiol in postmenopausal women with ER-positive breast cancer. Since obesity may decrease exemestane efficacy, we analyzed changes in sex steroids, adipokines, Ki-67, and drug levels in relation to obesity. Postmenopausal women with early-stage ER-positive breast cancer were randomized to either exemestane 25 mg QD (n = 57), 25 mg TIW (n = 57), or 25 mg/week (QW, n = 62) for 4-6 weeks before breast surgery. Serum and tissue pre- and post-treatment biomarkers were stratified by body mass index (BMI)< or ≥30 kg/m2. Post-treatment median exemestane and 17-OH exemestane levels were 5-6 times higher in the QD arm compared to the TIW arm. For obese women, TIW maintained comparable reductions to QD in systemic estradiol levels, although the reduction in estrone was less with the TIW regimen. There was less suppression of SHBG with the TIW versus the QD dose schedule in obese women which should result in less systemic bioavailable estrogens. Metabolically, the effect of the TIW regimen was similar to the QD regimen for obese women in terms of leptin suppression and increase in the adiponectin-leptin ratio. Reduction in tissue Ki-67 was less for obese women on the TIW regimen than QD, although changes were similar for non-obese women. Our findings suggest that TIW exemestane should be explored further for primary cancer prevention in both normal weight and obese cohorts.

Abstract We elucidate a holographic relationship between the enumerative geometry of the Hilbert scheme of N points in the plane ℂ2, with N large, and the entropy of certain magnetically charged black holes with AdS4 asymptotics. Specifically, we demonstrate how the entropy functional arises from the asymptotics of ’t Hooft and Wilson line operators in a 3d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 gauge theory. The gauge-Bethe correspondence allows us to interpret this calculation in terms of the enumerative geometry of the Hilbert scheme and thereby conjecture that the entropy is saturated by expectation values of certain natural operators in the quantum K-theory ring acting on the localised K-theory of the Hilbert scheme. We give numerical evidence that the large N limit is saturated by contributions from a certain vacuum/fixed point on the Hilbert scheme, associated to a particular triangular-shaped Young diagram, by evolving solutions to the Bethe equations numerically at finite (but large) N towards the classical limit. We thus conjecture a concrete geometric holographic dual of the so-called gravitational/Cardy block.

Abstract Background While trastuzumab has been shown to improve disease-free and overall survival in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, it may also cause trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity (TIC). Although racial and ethnic minorities are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), limited data exists on TIC incidence in diverse multi-ethnic populations. Our objective was to assess racial and ethnic differences in TIC and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) recovery among patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study including patients diagnosed with stage I-III HER2-positive breast cancer between 2007 and 2022 who had received adjuvant trastuzumab. We analyzed associations between sociodemographic factors, tumor characteristics, treatment regimens, and CVD risk factors with the primary outcomes of TIC and LVEF recovery, using multivariable logistic regression models. TIC was defined as > 10% decrease in LVEF to an overall LVEF 50%. Results Among 496 evaluable patients, median age was 53 years (IQR: 45.0–62.0) with 36.6% NHW, 15.8% non-Hispanic Black (NHB), 27.8% Hispanic, and 19.8% Other. Fifty-three (10.6%) patients developed TIC, half of whom experienced LVEF recovery. Compared to NHW, NHB had a higher rate of TIC (9.3% vs. 17.7%, respectively) and lower rate of LVEF recovery (70.6% vs. 21.4%, respectively), however, race/ethnicity was not a significant predictor of TIC after adjusting for confounders. Increasing age, lower baseline LVEF, anthracycline use, and presence of hypertension or coronary artery disease were significantly associated with TIC in multivariable analysis. Conclusions TIC was more common among NHB compared to NHW, however, Black race was not consistently associated with TIC after adjustment for CVD risk factors. This suggests that CVD comorbidities (e.g., hypertension) that more frequently affect racial and ethnic minorities and are modifiable may explain differences in TIC incidence and recovery.

Abstract

Abstract Background Women with high-risk breast lesions, such as atypical hyperplasia (AH) or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), have a 4- to tenfold increased risk of breast cancer compared to women with non-proliferative breast disease. Despite high-quality data supporting chemoprevention, uptake remains low. Interventions are needed to break down barriers. Methods The parent trial, MiCHOICE, is a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of patient and provider decision support tools to improve informed choice about chemoprevention among women with AH or LCIS. For this pre-implementation analysis, 25 providers participated in semi-structured interviews prior to accessing decision support tools. Interviews sought to understand attitudes/beliefs and barriers/facilitators to chemoprevention. Results Interviews with 25 providers (18 physicians and 7 advanced practice providers) were included. Providers were predominantly female (84%), white (72%), and non-Hispanic (88%). Nearly all providers (96%) had prescribed chemoprevention for eligible patients. Three themes emerged in qualitative analysis. The first theme describes providers’ confidence in chemoprevention and the utility of decision support tools. The second theme elucidates barriers to chemoprevention, including time constraints, risk communication and perceptions of patients’ fear of side effects and anxiety. The third theme is the need for early implementation of decision support tools. Conclusions This qualitative study suggests that providers were interested in the early inclusion of decision aids (DA) in their chemoprevention discussion workflow. The DAs may help overcome certain barriers which were elucidated in these interviews, including patient level concerns about side effects, clinic time constraints and difficulty communicating risk. A multi-faceted intervention with a DA as one active component may be needed. Trial registration This trial was registered with the NIH clinical trial registry, clinicaltrials.gov, NCT04496739.

19. A Maturity Model for Micro-Credentialing and Shorter Forms of Learning Practice in Australasian Universities

Abstract

As education and training providers grapple with increasing demand for micro-credentials, guidance on how to improve providers' capacity and capability to deliver a high standard of learning along with profitable outcomes is needed. This study sought to develop a maturity model that could assist higher education providers in distinguishing their stage of development for delivering micro-credentials and provide guidance on activities to advance micro-credential maturity. A survey of Australasian higher education providers validated the developed model and provided an indicator of the sector's maturity and ability to meet the increasing demand for micro-credentials. The model's domains of quality, resourcing, standards and strategy were identified as least mature across the sector. Technical infrastructure, namely a shopfront, credentialing system and platform for delivering micro-credentials was found to be the most mature. There is future scope to refine and extend the validity of the model through testing and standardisation with comparable international sectors.

Abstract

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. We study the partition functions of topologically twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on a hemisphere spacetime with boundary $HS^2 \times S^1$. We show that the partition function may be localised to either the Higgs branch or the Coulomb branch where the contributions to the path integral are vortex or monopole configurations respectively. Turning to $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry, we consider partition functions for exceptional Dirichlet boundary conditions that yield a complete set of `IR holomorphic blocks'. We demonstrate that these correspond to vertex functions: equivariant Euler characteristics of quasimap moduli spaces. In this context, we explore the geometric interpretation of both the Higgs and Coulomb branch localisation schemes in terms of the enumerative geometry of quasimaps and discuss the action of mirror symmetry., Comment: 44 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Apical extracellular matrices (aECMs) are complex extracellular compartments that form important interfaces between animals and their environment. In the adult C. elegans cuticle, layers are connected by regularly spaced columnar structures known as struts. Defects in struts result in swelling of the fluid-filled medial cuticle layer (blistering, Bli). Here we show that three cuticle collagens BLI-1, BLI-2, and BLI-6, play key roles in struts. BLI-1 and BLI-2 are essential for strut formation whereas activating mutations in BLI-6 disrupt strut formation. BLI-1, BLI-2, and BLI-6 precisely colocalize to arrays of puncta in the adult cuticle, corresponding to struts, initially deposited in diffuse stripes adjacent to cuticle furrows. They eventually exhibit tube-like morphology, with the basal ends of BLI-containing struts contact regularly spaced holes in the cuticle. Genetic interaction studies indicate that BLI strut patterning involves interactions with other cuticle components. Our results reveal strut formation as a tractable example of precise aECM patterning at the nanoscale.

Abstract

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow., Comment: 50 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, author's version of the paper published in Nature

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Outside the area of exponential asymptotics, the concept of the higher-order Stokes phenomenon remains somewhat esoteric. The intention of this work is to provide several examples of relatively simple ordinary differential equations where the phenomenon arises, and to develop additional practical methodologies for its study. In particular, we show how the higher-order Stokes phenomenon may be derived through the hyperterminant representation of the late-term divergence of an asymptotic expansion developed by Olde Daalhuis (J. Comp. Appl. Math. vol. 76, 1996, pp. 255-264). Lower-order components of the factorial-over-power divergence are considered, for which late-late-term divergence arises. Borel resummation of these lower-order components reveals the higher-order Stokes phenomenon, in which new components of the late-terms of the expansion are smoothly switched on with an error function dependence. The techniques are firstly demonstrated with a second-order linear inhomogeneous ODE that exemplifies the simplest example of higher-order Stokes phenomena. Abstract

Abstract Background Dysferlinopathies are a clinically heterogeneous group of muscular dystrophies caused by gene mutations resulting in deficiency of the membrane-associated protein dysferlin. They manifest post-growth and are characterised by muscle wasting (primarily in the limb and limb-gridle muscles), inflammation, and replacement of myofibres with adipose tissue. The precise pathomechanism for dysferlinopathy is currently unclear; as such there are no treatments currently available. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used to reduce inflammation and treat muscular dystrophies, but when administered to patients with dysferlinopathy, they have unexpected adverse effects, with accelerated loss of muscle strength. Methods To investigate the mechanistic basis for the adverse effects of GCs in dysferlinopathy, the potent GC dexamethasone (Dex) was administered for 4–5 weeks (0.5–0.75 µg/mL in drinking water) to dysferlin-deficient BLA/J and normal wild-type (WT) male mice, sampled at 5 (Study 1) or 10 months (Study 2) of age. A wide range of analyses were conducted. Metabolism- and immune-related gene expression was assessed in psoas muscles at both ages and in quadriceps at 10 months of age. For the 10-month-old mice, quadriceps and psoas muscle histology was assessed. Additionally, we investigated the impact of Dex on the predominantly slow and fast-twitch soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles (respectively) in terms of contractile function, myofibre-type composition, and levels of proteins related to contractile function and metabolism, plus glycogen. Results At both ages, many complement-related genes were highly expressed in BLA/J muscles, and WT mice were generally more responsive to Dex than BLA/J. The effects of Dex on BLA/J mice included (i) increased expression of inflammasome-related genes in muscles (at 5 months) and (ii) exacerbated histopathology of quadriceps and psoas muscles at 10 months. A novel observation was pronounced staining for glycogen in many myofibres of the damaged quadriceps muscles, with large pale vacuolated myofibres, suggesting possible myofibre death by oncosis. Conclusion These pilot studies provide a new focus for further investigation into the adverse effects of GCs on dysferlinopathic muscles.

Acknowledging the institutional challenges that hinder the work and careers of working-class academics (WCAs), The Intersections of a Working-Class Academic Identity recognises the adverse impacts of the overrepresentation of scholars from privileged classes, including a lack of cultural wealth in teaching and research, as well as the discouragement of talented working-class individuals who might otherwise pursue prolific academic careers.Looking beyond individual struggles, author Teresa Crew presents an informed, alternative perspective to the prevailing viewpoints in research on working-class individuals in higher education, analysing statistical data and consolidating the systemic challenges encountered by WCAs within a framework of classism. Abstract

In an institution where assessment was viewed as meaningless box-checking for the purpose of accreditation, a new reflective assessment practice changed 15 faculty members' perception of assessment in a single semester. Piloted with an interdisciplinary graduation requirement for Cultural Competency, the new assessment practice became a powerful tool for closing the loop in which participating faculty analyzed evidence to make improvements for student learning. This article provides a detailed history of the inception and development of that practice and evidence of faculty appreciation for a new four-question protocol.

The development of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) phasing system (APS) has allowed ALMA to function as an extraordinarily sensitive station for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at frequencies of up to 230 GHz (~1.3 mm). Efforts are now underway to extend use of the APS to 345 GHz (~0.87 mm). 38. The Kromatic Symmetric Function: A $K$-theoretic Analogue of $X_G$

Abstract

Schur functions are a basis of the symmetric function ring that represent Schubert cohomology classes for Grassmannians. Replacing the cohomology ring with $K$-theory yields a rich combinatorial theory of inhomogeneous deformations, where Schur functions are replaced by their $K$-analogues, the basis of symmetric Grothendieck functions. We introduce and initiate a theory of the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$, a $K$-theoretic analogue of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$. The Kromatic symmetric function is a generating series for graph colorings in which vertices may receive any nonempty set of distinct colors such that neighboring color sets are disjoint. Our main result lifts a theorem of Gasharov (1996) to this setting, showing that when $G$ is a claw-free incomparability graph, $\overline{X}_G$ is a positive sum of symmetric Grothendieck functions. This result suggests a topological interpretation of Gasharov's theorem. We then show that the Kromatic symmetric functions of path graphs are not positive in any of several $K$-analogues of the $e$-basis of symmetric functions, demonstrating that the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) does not have such a lift to $K$-theory and so is unlikely to be amenable to a topological perspective. We also define a vertex-weighted extension of $\overline{X}_G$ and show that it admits a deletion--contraction relation. Abstract

What happens in the early years of a child's life has a profound impact on the rest of their life. This significant and influential phase in visual, language and emotional development lays the foundation for lifelong health, learning and earning potential. In August 2021 National Literacy Trust commissioned Savanta ComRes to conduct a survey of 1,500 parents of children from birth to age five across the UK to explore the extent to which parents were carrying out seven key learning activities at home: reading (including books, e-books, and picture books), chatting, playing, singing, painting/drawing, looking at the alphabet and playing outside the home (e.g. at a library or play group). National Literacy Trust compared the results to surveys they commissioned One Poll to conduct in 2020 and 2019, which asked parents of children from birth to five across the UK the same questions about how frequently they were doing these learning activities in the home. By comparing results across different time periods, they are able to identify and monitor changes in behaviour, get a snapshot of activity during a particular time, and place the survey findings into a wider context. The key comparison findings are presented in this report.

Abstract

A well-known result of Stanley's shows that given a graph $G$ with chromatic symmetric function expanded into the basis of elementary symmetric functions as $X_G = \sum c_{\lambda}e_{\lambda}$, the sum of the coefficients $c_{\lambda}$ for $\lambda$ with exactly $k$ parts is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with exactly $k$ sinks. However, more is known. The $sink$ $sequence$ of an acyclic orientation of $G$ is a tuple $(s_1,\dots,s_k)$ such that $s_1$ is the number of sinks of the orientation, and recursively each $s_i$ with $i > 1$ is the number of sinks remaining after deleting the sinks contributing to $s_1,\dots,s_{i-1}$. Equivalently, the sink sequence gives the number of vertices at each level of the poset induced by the acyclic orientation. A lesser-known follow-up result of Stanley's determines certain cases in which we can find a sum of $e$-basis coefficients that gives the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with a given partial sink sequence. Of interest in its own right, this result also admits as a corollary a simple proof of the $e$-positivity of $X_G$ when the stability number of $G$ is $2$. In this paper, we prove a vertex-weighted generalization of this follow-up result, and conjecture a stronger version that admits a similar combinatorial interpretation for a much larger set of $e$-coefficient sums of chromatic symmetric functions. In particular, the conjectured formula would give a combinatorial interpretation for the sum of the coefficients $c_{\lambda}$ with prescribed values of $\lambda_1'$ and $\lambda_2'$ for any unweighted claw-free graph.

Abstract

In this paper, we extend the chromatic symmetric function $X$ to a chromatic $k$-multisymmetric function $X_k$, defined for graphs equipped with a partition of their vertex set into $k$ parts. We demonstrate that this new function retains the basic properties and basis expansions of $X$, and we give a method for systematically deriving new linear relationships for $X$ from previous ones by passing them through $X_k$. In particular, we show how to take advantage of homogeneous sets of $G$ (those $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that each vertex of $V(G) \backslash S$ is either adjacent to all of $S$ or is nonadjacent to all of $S$) to relate the chromatic symmetric function of $G$ to those of simpler graphs. Furthermore, we show how extending this idea to homogeneous pairs $S_1 \sqcup S_2 \subseteq V(G)$ generalizes the process used by Guay-Paquet to reduce the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture to unit interval graphs.

Abstract

We report measurements of the gravitationally lensed secondary image -- the first in an infinite series of so-called "photon rings" -- around the supermassive black hole M87* via simultaneous modeling and imaging of the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations. The inferred ring size remains constant across the seven days of the 2017 EHT observing campaign and is consistent with theoretical expectations, providing clear evidence that such measurements probe spacetime and a striking confirmation of the models underlying the first set of EHT results. The residual diffuse emission evolves on timescales comparable to one week. We are able to detect with high significance a southwestern extension consistent with that expected from the base of a jet that is rapidly rotating in the clockwise direction. This result adds further support to the identification of the jet in M87* with a black hole spin-driven outflow, launched via the Blandford-Znajek process. We present three revised estimates for the mass of M87* based on identifying the modeled thin ring component with the bright ringlike features seen in simulated images, one of which is only weakly sensitive to the astrophysics of the emission region. All three estimates agree with each other and previously reported values. Our strongest mass constraint combines information from both the ring and the diffuse emission region, which together imply a mass-to-distance ratio of $4.20^{+0.12}_{-0.06}~\mu{\rm as}$ and a corresponding black hole mass of $(7.13\pm0.39)\times10^9M_\odot$, where the error on the latter is now dominated by the systematic uncertainty arising from the uncertain distance to M87*.

Abstract

In many physical problems, it is important to capture exponentially-small effects that lie beyond-all-orders of a typical asymptotic expansion; when collected, the full expansion is known as the trans-series. Applied exponential asymptotics has been enormously successful in developing practical tools for studying the leading exponentials of a trans-series expansion, typically in the context of singular non-linear perturbative differential or integral equations. Separate to applied exponential asymptotics, there exists a closely related line of development known as \'Ecalle's theory of resurgence, which describes the connection between trans-series and a certain class of holomorphic functions known as resurgent functions. This connection is realised through the process of Borel resummation. However, in contrast to singularly perturbed problems, Borel resummation and \'Ecalle's resurgence theory have mainly focused on non-parametric asymptotic expansions (i.e. differential equations without a parameter). The relationships between these latter areas and applied exponential asymptotics has not been thoroughly examined, partially due to differences in language and emphasis. In this work, we explore these connections by developing an alternative framework for the factorial-over-power ansatz in exponential asymptotics that is centred on the Borel plane. Our work clarifies a number of elements used in applied exponential asymptotics, such as the heuristic use of Van Dyke's rule and the universality of factorial-over-power ansatzes. Along the way, we provide a number of useful tools for probing more pathological problems in exponential asymptotics known to arise in applications; this includes problems with coalescing singularities, nested boundary layers, and more general late-term behaviours.

Abstract

We present the first very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on April 2, 2017. Participation of phased-ALMA not only has improved the GMVA north-south resolution by a factor of ~3, but also has enabled fringe detection with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 G{\lambda}. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with the newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction with two bends within the inner 200 {\mu}as that resembles a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ~200 {\mu}as northwest of the core shows a conical shape in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
