15. Wind turbine monitoring using short-range Doppler radar

Abstract

This thesis summarises the research done on the feasibility of detecting and automatically classifying wind turbine faults using a short-range radar. Two main areas are included in the thesis: the theoretical and experimental analysis of wind turbine blade radar signatures in the near-field and the classification of wind turbine structural faults using machine learning algorithms. In the former, a new theoretical framework has been developed which extends the current far-field models and includes a mathematical and experimental analysis of simple flat blades as well as complex curved blades. The latter area comprises the analysis of the experimental results obtained using faulty wind turbine blades and methods of classifying these faults. This last task has been done in time and frequency domains using, respectively, the signals Statistical Parameters and the Principal Component Analysis algorithm for features extraction. The classification bas been performed employing the k-Nearest Neighbours algorithm. Finally, an Artificial Neural Network has been used as a more powerful classification tool in both domains.

Abstract

The "Reticulata irises" are dwarf irises highly appreciated in horticulture, which are characterised by their tuberiform bulbs, with a single fleshy inner tunic clothed mostly with reticulate or reticulate-hairy outer tunics, and basal leaves bifacial, angulose or finely sulcate in section. The aggregate is often accepted as a taxonomically compact group to which the name Iris subg. Hermodactyloides (Iris sect. Reticulatae) is often applied. It includes between 10–22 taxa (species and subspecies) occurring disjunctly from central Türkiye and the Transcaucasus throughout the Middle East to western China. Molecular work shows that Iris subg. Hermodactyloides, is polyphyletic as frequently delineated. Alternatively, analytic treatments accept two genera, Alatavia and Iridodictyum, exhibiting clear differences in morphology, biogeography, and phylogenetic connections. Recently, new field prospection across scarcely prospected vast territories led to the description of many new taxa in the "Reticulata irises." In this context, an updated synopsis of the bulbous genera Alatavia (four species) and Iridodictyum (18 + 2 species) is reported. For each accepted taxon, main synonyms, type indication, chromosome numbers, distribution areas, and taxonomic or nomenclatural remarks are reported. Further, five new specific combinations are introduced, and also four neotypes, two lectotypes, two second-step lectotypes, and one epitype are designated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Leadership in any managerial position that a nurse may hold appears to be closely connected to fostering positive and productive work environments within healthcare settings. However, not all nurse managers are characterized by leadership, and not all nurse leaders are nurse managers. In countries, such as Mexico, those who occupy these roles have barely sufficient training in management, are mainly characterized by their experience in one clinical specialty and their vocation for leadership is not a requirement. Our study aims to understand how the leadership vocation that some nurse managers have in their daily practice could impact the work environments of healthcare organizations in Mexico. Methods: A qualitative design was carried out through a grounded theory approach based on Corbin & Strauss, interviewing individually 13 nurse managers with representative experience in Mexican public sector hospitals. Results: According to the interviewees, the meaning of vocation is based mainly on the love for their profession, on the vocation of being a nurse and caring for people, as well as on the development of their own natural leadership potential for decision-making in practice. This situation produces positive feedback on themselves by generating productive effects in the work environment, consequently strengthening them to better organize professional resources and therefore producing improvements. Conclusions: The nurse manager's vocation of leadership derives from both the vocation of being a practicing nurse and the vocation for being a leader, positively impacting and productively contributing to the improvement of the work environment. Consequently, nurse managers with vocation for leadership should be the gold standard role in any healthcare organization. Abstract

Introduction. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on healthcare professionals globally, with nurses facing diverse challenges at the forefront. Despite their resilience, nurses are experiencing emotional burdens, which have contributed to a growing intention to abandon the profession. Understanding these factors is crucial for addressing the global nursing shortage. Methods. A qualitative descriptive approach was utilized for this study. Nurses who were actively working during the last waves of the pandemic in Catalonia, Spain, were intentionally recruited through social media and personal contacts, and data were collected through online semistructured interviews until data saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method. Results. Fourteen nurses, with an average of 22.8 years of work experience, were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes: (1) the impact of COVID-19 on health, (2) factors influencing the decision to stay, and (3) recommendations to improve crisis management. Conclusion. Nurses faced significant emotional impacts but demonstrated dedication and resilience. Their decision to persevere was influenced by factors such as responsibility, guilt, and economic stability. Urgent measures are necessary to provide tailored mental health support and recognize emotional challenges in crisis preparedness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. A taxonomic backbone for the Plumbaginaceae (Caryophyllales).

Abstract

A taxonomic backbone of the Plumbaginaceae is presented and the current state of knowledge on phylogenetic relationships and taxon limits is reviewed as a basis for the accepted taxon concepts. In total, 4,476 scientific names and designations are treated of which 30 are not in the family Plumbaginaceae. The Plumbaginaceae are subdivided in three tribes with 26 genera and 1,179 accepted species. Two subgenera, 17 sections, two subsections and 187 infraspecific taxa are accepted. At the species and infraspecific level 2,782 synonyms were assigned to accepted taxa, whereas 194 names were excluded from the core checklist (i.e., unplaced taxa, infrageneric subdivisions with still uncertain application, names of verified uncertain application, invalid horticultural names, excluded names from other families, other excluded designations, and unresolved names). The EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy was utilized as the tool to compile and manage the names and further taxonomic data under explicit taxon concepts. Secundum references are given in case taxon concepts were taken from the literature, whereas this study serves as reference for newly circumscribed taxa. The family's division into the tribes Aegialitideae, Limonieae, and Plumbagineae departs from earlier two-subfamily classifications, prompted by recent phylogenetic findings that challenge the subfamilial affinity of Aegialitis. The genus Acantholimon was extended to include Gladiolimon, as currently available phylogenetic and morphological data support this merger. In Limonium, all accepted species could be assigned to sections and subsections or the "Mediterranean lineage", respectively, making use of the phylogenetic distribution of their morphological characters and states. A new combination and/or status is proposed for Dyerophytum socotranum, Limonium thymoides, Limonium × fraternum, Limonium × rossmaessleri, and Limonium sect. Jovibarba. Special attention is given to nomenclatural issues, particularly for Statice nomen ambiguum to resolve the names under accepted names. The use of artificial groupings like "aggregates", "complexes" and "species groups" in alpha-taxonomic treatments is discussed. The taxonomic backbone will receive continued updates and through the Caryophyllales Taxonomic Expert Network, it contributes the treatment of the Plumbaginaceae for the World Flora Online. Abstract

The relatively new bundle of scholarship gathered under the notion of a 'global 1989' has produced an innovative field of research that highlights the necessity of a global approach towards the implosion of state socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. Yet this literature has neglected the broad range of international and transnational organizations which had an indispensable role during, but also after, the Cold War. Therefore this article attempts to approach the 'global 1989' from the vantage point of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). The analysis of this large trade union confederation sheds new light on post-Cold War labour internationalism, which has often been overshadowed by the developments leading up to the establishment of the ITUC in 2006. Furthermore, the article uncovers how the end of state socialism and its global reverberations engendered new fissures, debates, and tensions within the organization. While there might have been a 'rush to the East' during the immediate aftermath of the Cold War, globalization – which within the trade union landscape was accelerated by the global 1989 – became a far more pressing challenge during the 1990s. 45. Asma en el niño... qué hay de nuevo

Abstract

•El diagnóstico de asma es controvertido en los primeros años de edad, por la falta de pruebas de función pulmonar. La historia clínica, la respuesta al tratamiento antiasmático y el despistaje de otras enfermedades constituyen el eje para el diagnóstico.•En todo paciente de 6 años en adelante con sospecha de asma, debe realizarse una espirometría para su confirmación. Los valores de referencia de la espirometría se detallan en percentiles o Z-score, abandonando el porcentaje del valor predicho.•La determinación de FeNO solo es válida en el asma con inflamación eosinofílica. No hay pruebas consistentes para recomendar el uso rutinario de la FeNO en el seguimiento de los niños con asma.•El diagnóstico de alergia mediante prick-test y determinación de IgE específicas son claves para el estudio etiopatogénico. La introducción del diagnóstico molecular ha afinado el diagnóstico etiológico en aras al diseño de inmunoterapia en el nivel hospitalario.•El tratamiento farmacológico de mantenimiento del asma es escalonado. La piedra angular son los corticoides inhalados en dosis baja-media con la incorporación de los β-agonistas de acción prolongada que mejora la respuesta a los corticoides inhalados, evitando aumentar dosis. La incorporación de los antileucotrienos, los antimuscarínicos de acción larga (LAMA) y los anticuerpos monoclonales, han ampliado el espectro terapéutico del asma.•El tratamiento de alivio de los síntomas a partir de los 5 años de edad incluye administrar corticoides inhalados, siempre que se usen β-agonistas de acción corta o larga para evitar exacerbaciones graves. Se consolida la terapia single maintenance and reliever therapy(SMART) para alivio y control del asma.•La educación de los pacientes o la familia en el conocimiento del asma, el uso de los medicamentos, la técnica inhalatoria y la comprensión del plan de acción por escrito son puntos clave en el seguimiento y tratamiento integral del asma.
