1. How Is Evidence Use Enacted in Schools? A Mixed Methods Multiple Case Study of 'Deep-Use' Schools

Abstract

In the context of heightened policy expectations for research use, there is a need to better understand how schools enact these expectations. However, normative models for research use do not fit with longstanding empirical evidence about research use. This a) means that schools are likely to implement evidence use expectations in diverse ways that do not necessarily fit with policy expectations, b) creates challenges for developing meaningful guidance on improving research use in schools, and c) makes it difficult to assess the outcomes of, and ultimately improve, evidence use policy. This work is part of a unique, national study of schools' use of research conducted by an IES-funded knowledge utilization center, the Center for Research Use in Education. Through the purposeful selection of cases that engage in what the authors call "deep use" of research (see Farley-Ripple, et al, 2018), the present study links the Center's large scale, national survey data with interview data to explore how research use expectations are enacted in schools. The guiding research questions for this work are: (1) What does deep use of research look like in schools?; and (2) What conditions support deep use of research and how do those conditions come to exist?

Abstract

IntroductionGroup A streptococcus (GAS) infections, such as pharyngitis and impetigo, can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations experience high rates of RHD and GAS skin infection, yet rates of GAS pharyngitis are unclear. Anecdotally, clinical presentations of pharyngitis, including tonsillar hypertrophy and sore throat, are uncommon. This study aimed to develop a standardised set of tonsil photographs and determine tonsil size distribution from an urban paediatric population.MethodsA prospective cohort of children aged 3–15 years were recruited at the public events “Discover Day” and “Telethon Weekend” (October 2017) in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Tonsil photographs, symptomatology, and GAS rapid antigen detection tests (RADT) were collected. Tonsil size was graded from the photographs using the Brodsky Grading Scale of tonsillar hypertrophy (Brodsky) by two independent clinicians, and inter-rater reliability calculated. Pharyngitis symptoms and GAS RADT were correlated, and immediate results provided.ResultsFour hundred and twenty-six healthy children participated in the study over three days. The median age was seven years [interquartile range (IQR) 5.9–9.7 years]. Tonsil photographs were collected for 92% of participants, of which 62% were rated as good-quality photographs and 79% were deemed of adequate quality for assessment by both clinicians. When scored by two independent clinicians, 57% received the same grade. Average Brodsky grades (between clinicians) were 11%, 35%, 28%, 22% and 5% of grades 0,1,2,3 and 4, respectively. There was moderate agreement in grading using photographs, and minimal to weak agreement for signs of infection. Of 394 participants, 8% reported a sore throat. Of 334 GAS RADT performed,

Abstract

Background: A negative lifestyle has a reported relationship with psychological problems and deteriorated well-being. However, there is little information regarding the mediating role of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in this relationship. Objectives: The objectives of the present study are twofold: first, to investigate the association between negative lifestyle, physical self-concept (PSC), and depression, and second, to assess the potential mediating role of CRF in this complex relationship. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 612 schoolchildren aged between 9 and 14 years from the Araucanía region (southern Chile). CRF was measured using the Leger test, and lifestyle, depression, and PSC were measured using validated questionnaires. Results: A negative lifestyle reported an inverse association with PSC (p < 0.001) and a positive association with depression levels (p < 0.001). The mediation analysis showed that CRF was positively related to PSC (p < 0.001) and inversely related to depression (p = 0.001); besides, the indirect effect CRF acted as a partial mediator in the association between a negative lifestyle and PSC (indirect effect = −1.15; SE = 0.01; 95% CI, −1.87, −0.55) and depression levels (indirect effect = 0.22; SE = 0.08; 95% CI, 0.08, 0.38). Conclusion: In conclusion, CRF in schoolchildren played a potential mediating role in the association between a negative lifestyle and depression and PSC.

Abstract

Introduction. Professional practice is a relevant process for the personal and academic development of students. It uses learning contexts located in real scenarios and enables the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for professional practice. Objective. To design and validate an instrument designed to evaluate students' satisfaction with theirprofessional practice process. Materials and methods. Mixed-method study, non-probabilistic sample by convenience of 196 participants. The sample is formed by 20 Nutritionists and 176 students belonging to the Nutrition and Dietetics undergraduate program. The statistical software SPSS version 22 was used to analyze reliability by Cronbach's alpha and the Delphi method for content validity. An instrument with 32 items grouped in 4 dimensions was elaborated and applied to 116 students to analyze reliability. The instrument was adjusted to 25 items, and content validity was analyzed by a panel of experts. The judge’sconsensus was the foundation for developing a 29-item version grouped into 4 dimensions. This version was applied to 60 students to obtainCronbach's alpha validation. Results. The instrument presents an excellent level of reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.927. Conclusions. The instrument designed to measure satisfaction with professional practices is a reliable and valid measure, since it allows knowing the students ‘evaluation at the end of their professional practice process.

7. Association between Quality of Life, Confinement, and Sex in Adults: A Multigroup Structural Equation Analysis

Abstract

The state of confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic affected the quality of life of the general population. This study aims to define and contrast an explanatory model of the quality of life in adults and to analyze the relationships between these variables based on the state of confinement and sex. A total of 872 people from Chile aged between 17 and 50 (M = 21.70 years; SD= 3.272), of both sexes (60.90% male and 39.1% female) participated in this research, of whom 46.6% were not confined when tested and 53.4% were confined, analyzing the quality of life. A model of multi-group structural equations was performed, which adjusted very well (χ2 = 559.577; DF = 38; p < 0.001; IFC = 0.934; NFI = 0.916; IFI = 0.934; RMSEA = 0.061). The results show a positive and direct relationship among all the variables studied and the structural equation model proposed according to confinement and sex reveals a good fit in all the evaluation indexes. Stress and sleep, personality, and introspection were the indicators with the greatest influence in the four models, followed by the family and friends indicator with a medium correlation strength, such as the health monitoring dimension, although this was not as influential in confined individuals. The main conclusions are that the best adjustments are obtained in confined adults and females, and the data show that the psychological indicators obtained (stress and sleep, personality, and introspection) have the greatest influence on adults in the four models proposed with regard to their quality of life.

Abstract

Research increasingly links low literacy levels in the early grades with a range of poor outcomes; for instance, students who read below grade level at the end of third grade are about four times less likely than their higher-achieving peers to graduate from high school (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2010, 2011; Balfanz, Bridgeland, Bruce & Fox, 2012). In a four-year study, researchers from the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) at the University of Pennsylvania and the Center for Research on Education and Social Policy (CRESP) at the University of Delaware examined the effectiveness of Reading Recovery at helping struggling early readers catch up. The study's findings offer promise for intensive early literacy intervention.

12. Diet and sleep quality in chilean university students.

Abstract

To evaluate an association between eating patterns and sleep quality in Chilean university students. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted. Participants included students from 4 Chilean universities. Each student was administered survey Questionnaire on the frequency of healthy and unhealthy eating habits and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and their weight and height were taken to obtain the Body Mass Index (BMI). A total of 1,079 young university students, 80.26 % were women and the average age was 21.7 years. The 73.68 % have inadequate sleep quality. There is a significant differences in frequency between sleep quality and the intake of breakfast (p<0.001), fish (p<0.05) and dinner (p<0.05), that is, university students who reported optimal sleep consume breakfast and dinner on a daily basis and their fish intake is in line with nutritional recommendations. With respect to the association between sleep quality and healthy dietary patterns, it is observed a significant association (p<0.01) between optimal sleep and daily breakfast consumption in model 3 (Odds Ratio (OR): 0.61 (0.46–0.82)). Regarding unhealthy dietary patterns, a significant association (p<0.05) is observed in model 3 between sleep quality and alcohol consumption (OR: 1.42 (1.02–1.96)). Furthermore, a significant association between optimal sleep and salt consumption is observed in both model 2 (OR: 0.73 (0.54–0.99)) and model 3 (OR: 0.72 (0.53–0.97)). Finally, a significant relationship between not tobacco use and optimal sleep is observed (OR: 0.68 (0.48–0.96)). A positive relationship between healthy diet and sleep quality was observed in university students, which certain dietary patterns, such as the consumption of breakfast and low salt consumption and alcohol, are crucial to talk about a good sleep quality in this population group. 13. Reading Recovery: An Evaluation of the Four-Year i3 Scale-Up. A Research Report

Abstract

This report presents the final results of a four-year independent external evaluation of the impacts and implementation of the scale-up of Reading Recovery, a literacy intervention targeting struggling 1st-grade students. The evaluation of Reading Recovery includes parallel rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental designs for estimating program impacts, coupled with a large-scale, mixed-methods study of program implementation under the Investing in Innovation (i3) scale-up. The primary goals of the evaluation are to: (1) Provide experimental evidence of the short- and long-term impacts of Reading Recovery on student learning in schools that are part of the i3 scale-up; and (2) Assess the implementation of Reading Recovery under the i3 grant, including fidelity to the program model and progress toward the scale-up goals. The impact evaluation includes a multi-site randomized controlled trial (RCT) for estimating immediate impacts, a regression discontinuity study (RD) for estimating longterm impacts, and an implementation study for assessing fidelity of implementation and exploring program implementation in depth. The RCT includes nearly 7,000 randomized students in more than 1,200 schools over four years. The RD study measures Reading Recovery's impacts at the end of first grade and in third grade, and replicates the RCT's immediate post-treatment findings in a separate sample of students. The implementation study involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative research executed on a large scale over the same four-year timeframe. The evaluation's key findings pertain to the following topics: (1) Scale-Up Processes, Challenges, and Outcomes; (2) Immediate Impacts of Reading Recovery; (3) Sustained Impacts of Reading Recovery; and (4) Implementation Fidelity. The authors' analysis revealed strong fidelity to the program model in all of these areas and all years of the scale-up. This suggests that the intervention was delivered as designed to the students in the scale-up, and that teachers delivering Reading Recovery lessons were properly trained. In total, the results of the fidelity analysis support the validity of their impact findings. Three appendices are included. Abstract

Reading Recovery is a short-term early intervention designed to help the lowest-achieving readers in first grade reach average levels of classroom performance in literacy. Students identified to receive Reading Recovery meet individually with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher every school day for 30-minute lessons over a period of 12 to 20 weeks. The purpose of these lessons is to support rapid acceleration of each child's literacy learning. In 2010, The Ohio State University received a Scaling Up What Works grant from the U.S. Department of Education Investing in Innovation (i3) Fund to expand the use of Reading Recovery across the country. The award was intended to fund the training of 3,675 new Reading Recovery teachers in U.S. schools, thereby expanding service to an additional 88,200 students. The Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) was contracted to conduct an independent evaluation of the i3 scale-up of Reading Recovery over the course of five years. The evaluation includes parallel rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental designs for estimating program impacts, coupled with a large-scale mixed-methods study of program implementation. This report presents the findings of the second year of the evaluation. The primary goals of this evaluation are: (1) to provide experimental evidence of the impacts of Reading Recovery on student learning under this scale-up effort; (2) to assess the success of the scale-up in meeting the i3 grant's expansion goals; and (3) to document the implementation of the scale-up and fidelity to program standards. This document is the second in a series of three reports based on the external evaluation of the Reading Recovery i3 Scale-Up. The report represents results from the impact and implementation studies conducted over the 2012-2013 school year--the third year of the scale-up effort and the second full year of the evaluation. 15. Increased retinal venular calibre in acute infections

Abstract

Abstract Population-based studies have demonstrated that increased retinal venular calibre is a risk factor for cardiac disease, cardiac events and stroke. Venular dilatation also occurs with diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia and autoimmune disease where it is attributed to inflammation. This study examined whether the inflammation associated with infections also affected microvascular calibre. Participants with infections and CRP levels > 100 mg/L were recruited from the medical wards of a teaching hospital and assisted to complete a demographic and vascular risk factor questionnaire, and to undergo non-mydriatic retinal photography (Canon CR5-45NM, Japan). They were then treated with appropriate antibiotics, and underwent repeat retinal imaging when their CRP levels had fallen to less than 100 mg/L. Retinal images were examined for arteriole and venular calibre using validated semi-automated software based on Knudtson’s modification of the Parr-Hubbard formula (IVAN, U Wisconsin). Differences in inflammatory markers and calibre were examined using the paired t-test for continuous variables. Determinants of calibre were calculated from multiple linear regression analysis. Forty-one participants with respiratory (27, 66%), urinary (6, 15%), skin (5, 12%), or miscellaneous (3, 7%) infections were studied. After antibiotic treatment, participants’ mean CRP levels fell from 172.9 ± 68.4 mg/L to 42.2 ± 28.2 mg/L (p 100 mg/L that persisted at review (199.2 ± 59.0 and 159.4 ± 40.7 mg/L, p = 0.055). Their CRAE and CRVE were not different before and after antibiotic treatment (p = 0.96, p = 0.78). Hospital inpatients with severe infections had retinal venular calibre that decreased as their infections resolved and CRP levels fell after antibiotic treatment. The changes in venular calibre with intercurrent infections may confound retinal vascular assessments of, for example, blood pressure control and cardiac risk.

Abstract

Background: Muscle quality index (MQI) is an emerging health indicator obtained by dividing handgrip strength by body mass index (BMI) that needs to be studied in morbidly obese patients (defined by BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2). Objective: To determine the association between MQI, metabolic syndrome (MetS) markers, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and as a second objective to determine the potential mediation role of MQI in the relationship between abdominal obesity and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in this sample. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 86 severely/morbidly obese patients (age = 41.1 ± 11.9 y, nine men). MQI, metabolic syndrome markers, CRF, and anthropometric parameters were measured. Two groups were developed according to MQI; High-MQI (n = 41) and Low-MQI (n = 45). Results: The Low-MQI group reported higher abdominal obesity (High-MQI: 0.7 ± 0.1 vs. Low-MQI: 0.8 ± 0.1 WC/height; p = 0.011), SBP (High-MQI: 133.0 ± 17.5 vs. Low-MQI: 140.1 ± 15.1 mmHg; p = 0.048), and lower CRF (High-MQI; 26.3 ± 5.9 vs. Low-MQI; 22.4 ± 6.1 mL/kg/min, p = 0.003) than the High-MQI group. Waist-to-height ratio (β: −0.07, p = 0.011), SBP (β: −18.47, p = 0.001), and CRF (β: 5.21, p = 0.011) were linked to MQI. In a mediation model, the indirect effect confirms that MQI is a partial mediator of the association between abdominal obesity with SBP. Conclusions: MQI in morbidly obesity patients reported an inverse association with MetS markers and a positive association with CRF (VO2max). It mediates the relationship between abdominal obesity and SBP.

Abstract

2D Ruddlesden‐Popper (RP) and Dion‐Jacobson (DJ) halide perovskite structures are characterized by the n parameter that represents the number of PbI6 layers in the spacer‐separated perovskite slabs. In most of the literature, n is referred to the initial composition of the precursor solution and, then, to the initial spacer content. In this approach, the fact that the spacer can be partially lost upon annealing is not considered. Here, the chemical processes occurring upon the preparation of reduced‐dimensional halide perovskite thin films of both families are investigated with a special focus on the organic cations composition and, especially, the evolution of n values. For each family, several spacers are investigated. It is shown that a large amount of monoammonium spacer cations is progressively eliminated upon annealing for the 2D‐RP perovskites, while, on the contrary, the final composition is close to the initial one in the case of the diammonium spacer cations of the 2D‐DJ perovskites. The elimination is related to the volatilization of the species after their deprotonation and the phenomenon can be regulated by halide additives. This work provides an important insight into the chemistry of the 2D perovskite layers and shows the importance of determining their “true” n value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As a critical step in understanding the impacts of IB, the analyses presented in this report examined the selection mechanisms behind IB participation across Florida, the state with the second highest representation of IB programs in the nation. We use longitudinal student and school-level data from 1995 through 2009 from the Florida K-20 Education Data Warehouse (EDW) to characterize individual students' educational histories from elementary school through high school and into college. To address issues of selection bias, we use propensity score methods (Rosenbaum & Rubin, 1983) to adjust for preexisting differences between IB and non-IB students. These analyses are designed to address the following research questions: (1) What are the student- and school-level predictors of participating in the IB Diploma Programme in Florida?; (2) To what degree does propensity score stratification or matching reduce selection bias associated with key student and school-level factors?; (3) What are the estimated differences in key postsecondary access indicators (i.e., SAT and ACT scores) and enrollment statistics (e.g., college selectivity) with and without different types of propensity score adjustments? Results revealed that, when looking at the statewide population in Florida, the selection bias associated with voluntary participation in IB is very large, and that mechanisms for dealing with selection bias using propensity scores may not be sufficient.

24. Evaluation of the i3 Scale-up of Reading Recovery: Year One Report, 2011-12. RR-76

Abstract

Reading Recovery (RR) is a short-term early intervention designed to help the lowest-achieving readers in first grade reach average levels of classroom performance in literacy. Students identified to receive Reading Recovery meet individually with a specially trained Reading Recovery (RR) teacher every school day for 30-minute lessons over a period of 12 to 20 weeks. The purpose of these lessons is to support rapid acceleration of each child's literacy learning. In 2010, The Ohio State University received a Scaling Up What Works grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) Fund to expand the use of Reading Recovery across the country. The award was intended to fund the scale-up of Reading Recovery by training 3,675 new RR Teachers in U.S. schools, thereby expanding capacity to allow service to an additional 88,200 students. The Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) was contracted to conduct an independent evaluation of the i3 scale up of Reading Recovery over the course of five years. The evaluation includes parallel rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental designs for estimating program impacts, coupled with a large-scale mixed-methods study of program implementation under the i3 scale-up. This report presents findings through the second year of the evaluation. The primary goals of this evaluation were: (1) to assess the success of the scale-up in meeting the i3 grant's expansion goals; (2) to document the implementation of scale-up and fidelity to program standards; and (3) to provide experimental evidence of the impacts of Reading Recovery on student learning under this scale-up effort. This document is the first in a series of three annual reports produced based on our external evaluation of the Reading Recovery i3 Scale-Up. This report presents early results from the experimental impact and implementation studies conducted over the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. Abstract

The state of confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic affected the quality of life of the general population. This study aims to define and contrast an explanatory model of the quality of life in adults and to analyze the relationships between these variables based on the state of confinement and sex. A total of 872 people from Chile aged between 17 and 50 (M = 21.70 years; SD= 3.272), of both sexes (60.90% male and 39.1% female) participated in this research, of whom 46.6% were not confined when tested and 53.4% were confined, analyzing the quality of life. A model of multi-group structural equations was performed, which adjusted very well (χ2 = 559.577; DF = 38; p < 0.001; IFC = 0.934; NFI = 0.916; IFI = 0.934; RMSEA = 0.061). The results show a positive and direct relationship among all the variables studied and the structural equation model proposed according to confinement and sex reveals a good fit in all the evaluation indexes. Stress and sleep, personality, and introspection were the indicators with the greatest influence in the four models, followed by the family and friends indicator with a medium correlation strength, such as the health monitoring dimension, although this was not as influential in confined individuals. The main conclusions are that the best adjustments are obtained in confined adults and females, and the data show that the psychological indicators obtained (stress and sleep, personality, and introspection) have the greatest influence on adults in the four models proposed with regard to their quality of life. Abstract

Objetivo: El propósito del presente estudio fue determinar el perfil dermatoglifico de los seleccionados chilenos de básquetbol categoría sub 14. Método: El diseño de investigación es de tipo no experimental, transeccional descriptivo. Participaron 20 seleccionados de básquetbol chilenos categoría sub 14, se analizaron las huellas digitales siguiendo el protocolo de Cummins y Midlo para determinar los diseños: Arco, Presilla y Verticilo, y los indicadores cuantitativos índice Delta, sumatoria de la cantidad total de líneas y, adicionalmente, los tipos de fórmulas digitales. Resultados: Los indicadores dermatoglificos cualitativos presentan un predominio de Presilla = 53,3%, seguidos de Verticilo= 39,3%, y escasa presencia de Arco= 7,3%; en cuanto a los indicadores cuantitativos, el D10= 12,79 ± 3,0 y la SQTL= 140,53 ± 33,46. Por otra parte, el predominio de fórmulas digitales fue de L>W (50%), ALW (20,0%), W>L (15%), siendo las fórmulas digitales AL, 10L y 10W, las que presentan el menor predominio (5%). Conclusión: Los seleccionados chilenos de básquetbol categoría sub 14 presentan un predominio de características físicas de potencia y velocidad, seguidas de resistencia aeróbica y de coordinación motora, siendo minimizada la fuerza, elementos típicos de la naturaleza del deporte practicado. Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the dermatoglyphic profile of the selected Chilean basketball players in the under 14 category. Methods: The research design is non-experimental, transectional and descriptive. 20 Chilean basketball teams participated in the under 14 category, the fingerprints were analyzed following the Cummins and Midlo protocol to determine the designs: Arch, Loop and Whorl, and the Delta index quantitative indicators, sum of the total number of lines and, additionally, the types of digital formulas. Results: The qualitative dermatoglyphic indicators show a predominance of Loop= 53.3%, followed by Whorl= 39.3%, and a scarce presence of Arch = 7.3%; Regarding the quantitative indicators, D10= 12.79 ± 3.0 and LQTS= 140.53 ± 33.46. On the other hand, the predominance of digital formulas was L>W (50%), ALW (20.0%), W>L (15%), being the digital formulas AL, 10L and 10W, those with the lowest predominance (5%). Conclusion: The chilean basketball teams under 14 category present a predominance of physical characteristics of power and speed, followed by aerobic resistance and motor coordination, with force being minimized, typical elements of the nature of the sport practiced. 30. Searching for line transitive, point imprimitive, linear spaces

Abstract

A finite linear space is a finite set of points and lines, where any two points lie on a unique line. Well known examples include projective planes. This project focuses on linear spaces which admit certain types of symmetries. Symmetries of the space which preserve the line structure are called automorphisms. A group of these is called an automorphism group of the linear space. Two interesting properties of linear spaces are point imprimitivity and line transitivity. Point imprimitive spaces admit a second structure on the points aside from the lines, which is also preserved by an automorphism group. In line transitive spaces, given any two lines, an automorphism can be found that maps one line to the other. Very few point imprimitive, line transitive linear spaces, apart from projective planes, are known. Such spaces that have been found have been surprising. One point of interest is whether such spaces are rare and the known ones are in some sense exceptional, or if there are many such spaces, but mathematicians have been looking in the wrong places. Here we investigate methods to construct a line transitive, point imprimitive linear space over a given point set and automorphism group. We employ these methods on two given automorphism groups, both on a set of 451 points. This was an exceptional situation identified in theoretical work of Praeger and Tuan. Included in this is the development of an algorithm, written in GAP, an algebraic programming system, and C, to perform these constructions. Abstract

Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P

The purpose of this cross-cultural study was to determine the association between the sociodemographic background of a child’s parents (i.e., their socioeconomic level, marital status, and educational level) with the child’s lifestyle (i.e., Mediterranean diet (MD), physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST)), and health markers. Material: This cross-sectional study included 1273 children, from Chile (n = 496), Colombia (n = 340), and Spain (n = 437). The sociodemographic information together with the lifestyle and health markers of the children were measured. There was an inverse association between a low or medium-low socioeconomic level for the parents of Chilean children and handgrip strength (β −0.61, p < 0.001); meanwhile, for Spanish children, an inverse association between a low or medium-low socioeconomic level and PA after school (β −0.58, p = 0.016), lifestyle (β −0.74, p = 0.015), and with MD adherence (β −0.86, p = 0.004) was found. The risk (i.e., by odd ratios (OR)) of being divorced/separated parents marital status showed an inverse association with abdominal obesity (OR 0.21, p = 0.045) in Spanish children; however, the parent’s marital status and a low educational level were risk factors for the suffering of a low nutritional level in Colombian children (OR 2.02, p = 0.048; OR 2.49, p < 0.001, respectively). On the other hand, a low educational level for parents reported for Chilean children had a positive association with ST of ≥4 h per day (OR 1.82, p = 0.020). In conclusion, in Spanish-speaking children, the lifestyle and health markers of the children are affected by the sociodemographic background of their parents; however, these effects could be moderated by the socio-cultural and economic status of their countries as members of the OCDE; therefore, it is essential to develop policies that decrease these gaps, so that children who are under-resourced can reach their full potential.

Abstract

Objective. The objective of this work was to analyze the graduation profiles, labor fields and thematic orientation of the curricular subjects of the careers of Pedagogy in Physical Education (PEFI) of Chile. Method. To meet the objective, a sequential exploratory design was used, focused on the analysis of documentary content to review the profile of graduation, labor field and curricular mesh declared by 25 PEFI careers in Chile. First, a qualitative analysis of the profile, labor field and curricular was carried out that allowed the creation of the categories. Subsequently, a quantitative analysis was executed to determine the frequency with which the different careers address the contents of each category. Results. Among the main results, six dimensions were evidenced competences associated with the graduation profile (evaluation, management of environment and work climate, reflective and personal, social and communicative, management, knowledge and skills for the use of teaching methods), seven dimensions associated with the labor field (educational context, sports field, disciplinary field without specifying, artistic, research field, tourism, well-being and health) and seven dimensions to which the curricular subjects are oriented. Conclusion. Critical reflection, the ability to implement learning and evaluation activities are the main competencies that highlight the graduation profiles, being the performance in educational establishments of the school system the main labor field of performance, in addition, it is concluded that all Chilean universities incorporate in their curriculum subjects in motor skills, artistic-cultural manifestations, gymnastics, Management-Administration, curricular fundamentals and degree., Objetivo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar los perfiles de egreso, campos laborales y orientación temática de las asignaturas curriculares de las carreras de Pedagogía en Educación Física (PEFI) de Chile. Método. Para cumplir con el objetivo se utilizó un diseño exploratorio secuencial, centrado en el análisis de contenido documental para revisar el perfil de egreso, campo laboral y malla curricular declarado por 25 carreras de PEFI de Chile. Primeramente, se realizó un análisis cualitativo del perfil, campo laboral y curricular que permitió la creación de las categorías. Posteriormente, se ejecutó un análisis cuantitativo para determinar la frecuencia con que las diferentes carreras abordan los contenidos de cada categoría. Resultados. Entre los principales resultados se evidencian seis dimensiones asociadas a competencias del perfil de egreso (evaluación, manejo de ambiente y clima de trabajo, reflexivo y personales, sociales y comunicativas, gestión, conocimientos y habilidades para el uso de métodos de enseñanza), siete dimensiones asociadas al de campo laboral (contexto educacional, ámbito deportivo, ámbito disciplinar sin especificar, artístico, ámbito investigativo, turismo, bienestar y salud) y siete dimensiones a las cuales se orientan las asignaturas curriculares. Conclusión. La reflexión crítica, la capacidad de implementar actividades de aprendizaje y de evaluación son las principales competencias que destacan los perfiles de egreso, además, el desempeño en establecimientos educaciones del sistema escolar es el principal campo laboral declarado, siendo las asignaturas en motricidad, manifestaciones artístico-culturales, gimnasia, gestión-administración, fundamentos curriculares y titulación incorporada en todas las mallas curriculares de las universidades chilenas.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the dermatoglyphic profile of the selected Chilean basketball players in the under 14 category. Methods: The research design is non-experimental, transectional and descriptive. 20 Chilean basketball teams participated in the under 14 category, the fingerprints were analyzed following the Cummins and Midlo protocol to determine the designs: Arch, Loop and Whorl, and the Delta index quantitative indicators, sum of the total number of lines and, additionally, the types of digital formulas. Results: The qualitative dermatoglyphic indicators show a predominance of Loop= 53.3%, followed by Whorl= 39.3%, and a scarce presence of Arch = 7.3%; Regarding the quantitative indicators, D10= 12.79 ± 3.0 and LQTS= 140.53 ± 33.46. On the other hand, the predominance of digital formulas was L>W (50%), ALW (20.0%), W>L (15%), being the digital formulas AL, 10L and 10W, those with the lowest predominance (5%). Conclusion: The chilean basketball teams under 14 category present a predominance of physical characteristics of power and speed, followed by aerobic resistance and motor coordination, with force being minimized, typical elements of the nature of the sport practiced., Objetivo: El propósito del presente estudio fue determinar el perfil dermatoglifico de los seleccionados chilenos de básquetbol categoría sub 14. Método: El diseño de investigación es de tipo no experimental, transeccional descriptivo. Participaron 20 seleccionados de básquetbol chilenos categoría sub 14, se analizaron las huellas digitales siguiendo el protocolo de Cummins y Midlo para determinar los diseños: Arco, Presilla y Verticilo, y los indicadores cuantitativos índice Delta, sumatoria de la cantidad total de líneas y, adicionalmente, los tipos de fórmulas digitales. Resultados: Los indicadores dermatoglificos cualitativos presentan un predominio de Presilla = 53,3%, seguidos de Verticilo= 39,3%, y escasa presencia de Arco= 7,3%; en cuanto a los indicadores cuantitativos, el D10= 12,79 ± 3,0 y la SQTL= 140,53 ± 33,46. Por otra parte, el predominio de fórmulas digitales fue de L>W (50%), ALW (20,0%), W>L (15%), siendo las fórmulas digitales AL, 10L y 10W, las que presentan el menor predominio (5%). Conclusión: Los seleccionados chilenos de básquetbol categoría sub 14 presentan un predominio de características físicas de potencia y velocidad, seguidas de resistencia aeróbica y de coordinación motora, siendo minimizada la fuerza, elementos típicos de la naturaleza del deporte practicado.

Abstract

Plant root-knot nematode (RKN) interaction studies are performed on several host plant models. Though RKN interact with trees, no perennial woody model has been explored so far. Here, we show that poplar (Populus tremula × P. alba) grown in vitro is susceptible to Meloidogyne incognita, allowing this nematode to penetrate, to induce feeding sites, and to successfully complete its life cycle. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis was performed to study changes in poplar gene expression in galls compared with noninfected roots. Three genes (expansin A, histone 3.1, and asparagine synthase), selected as gall development marker genes, followed, during poplar-nematode interaction, a similar expression pattern to what was described for other plant hosts. Downregulation of four genes implicated in the monolignol biosynthesis pathway was evidenced in galls, suggesting a shift in the phenolic profile within galls developed on poplar roots. Raman microspectroscopy demonstrated that cell walls of giant cells were not lignified but mainly composed of pectin and cellulose. The data presented here suggest that RKN exercise conserved strategies to reproduce and to invade perennial plant species and that poplar is a suitable model host to study specific traits of tree-nematode interactions.
