Abrupt transitions in ecosystems can be interconnected, raising challenges for science and management in identifying sufficient interventions to prevent them or recover from undesirable shifts. Here we use principles of network controllability to explore how difficult it is to manage coupled regime shifts. We find that coupled regime shifts are easier to manage when they share drivers, but can become harder to manage if new feedbacks are formed when coupled. Simulation experiments showed that both network structure and coupling strength matter in our ability to manage interconnected systems. This theoretical observation calls for an empirical assessment of cascading regime shifts in ecosystems and warns about our limited ability to control cascading effects., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we investigate the influence of perfect fluid dark matter and quantum corrections on the thermodynamics of non-linear magnetic-charged black hole. We consider the metric of the static non-linear magnetic-charged black hole in the background of perfect fluid dark matter. Starting with the black hole temperature and the corrected entropy, we use the event horizon propriety in order to find the temperature, and based on the surface gravity definition, we find the uncorrected entropy. However, using the definition of the corrected entropy due to thermal fluctuation, we find and plot the entropy of the black hole. We find that the entropy is highly affected for smaller non-linear magnetic-charged black holes. Afterwards, we study the thermodynamic stability of the black hole by computing and plotting the evolution of heat capacity. The results show that second-order phase transition occurs, which appears more later as the dark matter parameter decreases, and leads the black hole to move from the stable phase to the unstable phase. Furthermore, we show that the heat capacity for smaller black holes are also affected, since it appears not being only an increasing function., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

This paper presents both experimental and theoretical investigations into the spectroscopy of dilute cesium (Cs) atoms within a solid argon (Ar) matrix at cryogenic temperatures. This system is relevant for matrix isolation spectroscopy and in particular for recently proposed methods for investigating phenomena that extend beyond the standard model of particle physics. We record absorption spectra at various deposition temperatures and examine the evolution of these spectra post-deposition with respect to temperature changes. Taking advantage of Cs-Ar and Ar-Ar pairwise interaction potentials, we conduct a stability study of trapping sites, which indicates a preference for T$_{\rm d}$ (tetrahedral, 4 vacancies) and O$_{\rm h}$ (cubic, 6 vacancies) symmetries. By implementing a mean-field analysis of the long-range Cs(6s,6p)-Ar-Ar triple dipole interaction, combined with a temperature-dependent shift in zero point energy, we propose effective Cs(6s,6p)-Ar pairwise potentials. Upon integrating these pairwise potentials with spin-orbit coupling, we achieve a satisfactory agreement between the observed and simulated absorption line positions. The observed line broadening is reasonably well reproduced by a semi-classical thermal Monte Carlo approach based on Mulliken-type differences between excited and ground potential curves. Additionally, we develop a simple, first-order crystal field theory featuring only 6 interaction mode coordinates. It uses the reflection approximation and incorporates quantized (phonon) normal modes. This produces a narrow triplet structure but not the observed amount of splitting.

The letter introduces an extended (3+1)-dimensional [(3+1)D] nonlocal cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation describing the dynamics of dissipative light bullets in optical fiber amplifiers under the interplay between dopants and a spatially nonlocal nonlinear response. The model equation includes the effects of fiber dispersion, linear gain, nonlinear loss, fiber nonlinearity, atomic detuning, linear and nonlinear diffractive transverse effects, and nonlocal nonlinear response. A system of coupled ordinary differential equations for the amplitude, temporal, and spatial pulse widths and position of the pulse maximum, unequal wavefront curvatures, chirp parameters, and phase shift is derived using the variational technique. A stability criterion is established, where a domain of dissipative parameters for stable steady-state solutions is found. Direct integration of the proposed nonlocal evolution equation is performed, which allows us to investigate the evolution of the Gaussian beam along a doped nonlocal optical fiber, showing stable self-organized dissipative spatiotemporal light bullets.

In this paper, modulation instability and nonlinear supratransmission are investigated in a one-dimensional chain of atoms using cubic-quartic nonlinearity coefficients. As a result, we establish the discrete nonlinear evolution equation by using the multi-scale scheme. To calculate the modulation instability gain, we use the linearizing scheme. Particular attention is given to the impact of the higher nonlinear term on the modulation instability. Following that, full numerical integration was performed to identify modulated wave patterns, as well as the appearance of a rogue wave. Through the nonlinear supratransmission phenomenon, one end of the discrete model is driven into the forbidden bandgap. As a result, for driving amplitudes above the supratransmission threshold, the solitonic bright soliton and modulated wave patterns are satisfied. An important behavior is observed in the transient range of time of propagation when the bright solitonic wave turns into a chaotic solitonic wave. These results corroborate our analytical investigations on the modulation instability and show that the one-dimensional chain of atoms is a fruitful medium to generate long-lived modulated waves.

In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a non-linear magnetic-charged AdS black hole surrounded by quintessence, in the background of perfect fluid dark matter(PFDM). After having constructed the corresponding metric, we analyse the structure of the horizon. We find that the existence of inner or outer horizon are constrained by the presence of dark matter. Afterwards, we put out the mass and the temperature of the black hole, in order to get its entropy. Subsequently, we find the expression of the pressure which leads us to get the table of critical values and the isothermal diagram. Especially, we find that the critical values of the temperature and the pressure increase as the dark matter parameter increases. Also, analysing the isothermal diagram, we observe a van der Waals-like behaviour remarked by the presence of a first-order phase transition when we cross the critical temperature. Additionally, we compute and plot the heat capacity and the Hessian matrix of the black hole mass. For the heat capacity, we find that a second-order phase transition occurs, leading the black hole to move from stable phase to unstable one. Furthermore, it comes out that this phase transition point is shifted towards higher values of the horizon radius, as we decrease the dark matter density and increase the quintessence density., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Automation of cranes can have a direct impact on the productivity of construction projects. In this paper, we focus on the control of one of the most used cranes, the boom crane. Tower cranes and overhead cranes have been widely studied in the literature, whereas the control of boom cranes has been investigated only by a few works. Typically, these works make use of simple models making use of a large number of simplifying assumptions (e.g. fixed length cable, assuming certain dynamics are uncoupled, etc.) A first result of this paper is to present a fairly complete nonlinear dynamic model of a boom crane taking into account all coupling dynamics and where the only simplifying assumption is that the cable is considered as rigid. The boom crane involves pitching and rotational movements, which generate complicated centrifugal forces, and consequently, equations of motion highly nonlinear. On the basis of this model, a control law has been developed able to perform position control of the crane while actively damping the oscillations of the load. For the GBAR (Gravitational Behaviour of Antihydrogen at Rest) experiment at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility we have constructed a source of slow positrons, which uses a low-energy electron linear accelerator (linac). The driver linac produces electrons of 9 MeV kinetic energy that create positrons from bremsstrahlung-induced pair production. Staying below 10 MeV ensures no persistent radioactive activation in the target zone and that the radiation level outside the biological shield is safe for public access. An annealed tungsten-mesh assembly placed directly behind the target acts as a positron moderator. The system produces $5\times10^7$ slow positrons per second, a performance demonstrating that a low-energy electron linac is a superior choice over positron-emitting radioactive sources for high positron flux., Comment: published in NIM A. 33 pages 9 figures

We purpose an approach for the thermodynamic analysis of rotating and non-linear magnetic-charged black hole with quintessence. Accordingly, we compute various thermodynamics quantities of the black hole, such as mass, temperature, potential provided from the magnetic charge, and the heat capacity. Moreover, we study phase transitions of this black hole, analyzing the plot of its heat capacity. Then, we have shown that the black hole mass would have a phase of decrease, while the temperature increases from negative absolute temperatures. From the behavior of the heat capacity, we point out that the black hole undergoes to a second-order phase transition, which is shifted towards the higher values of entropy as we increase the rotating parameter $a$ or the magnetic parameter $Q$., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

We study the effective range expansion of scattering on a real Casimir-Polder potential. We use Liouville transformations which transform the potential landscape while preserving the reflection and transmission amplitudes. We decompose the scattering calculation in two more elementary problems, one for the homogeneous 1/z^4 potential and the other one for the correction to this idealization. We use the symmetries of the transformed problem and the properties of the scattering matrices to derive an improved effective range expansion leading to a more accurate expansion of scattering amplitudes at low energy.

We propose to use quantum interferences to improve the accuracy of the measurement of the free fall acceleration g of antihydrogen in the GBAR experiment. This method uses most antiatoms prepared in the experiment and it is simple in its principle as interferences between gravitational quantum states are readout without transitions between them. We use a maximum likelihood method for estimating the value of g and assess the accuracy of this estimation by a Monte-Carlo simulation. We find that the accuracy is improved by approximately three orders of magnitude with respect to the classical timing technique planned for the current design of the experiment., Comment: 8 figures

In this work, we investigate the thermodynamic and the stability of the regular Hayward black hole surrounded by quintessence. Using the metric of the black hole surrounded by quintessence and the new approach of the holographic principle, we derive the expression of the Unruh Verlinde temperature. Hawking temperature and specific heat are derived using the first law of black holes thermodynamics. Gibbs free energy is also evaluated. The behaviors of these quantities show that, the quantum effects represented by the parameter $\beta$ induces a decreasing of the Hawking temperature of the black hole, and that decrease is accentuated when increasing the magnitude of $\beta$ and the normalization factor $a$ related to the density of quintessence. For the lower entropies, the black hole passes from the unstable phase to the stable one by a first order thermodynamics phase transition. When increasing the entropy, a second phase transition occurs. This new phase transition is a second-order thermodynamics phase transition and brings the black hole to unstable state. It results that, when increasing of magnitude of $\beta$, the phase transition points are shifted to the higher entropies. Moreover, the phenomena of phase transitions are preserved by adding the quintessence. Furthermore, when increasing the normalization factor of quintessence, the first order transition point is shifted to higher entropies, while the second-order thermodynamics phase transition point is shifted to lower entropies., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We study the quantum reflection of ultracold antihydrogen atoms bouncing on the surface of a liquid helium film. The Casimir-Polder potential and quantum reflection are calculated for different thicknesses of the film supported by different substrates. Antihydrogen can be protected from anni- hilation for as long as 1.3s on a bulk of liquid 4He, and 1.7s for liquid 3He. These large lifetimes open interesting perspectives for spectroscopic measurements of the free fall acceleration of antihydrogen. Variation of the scattering length with the thickness of a film of helium shows interferences which we interpret through a Liouville transformation of the quantum reflection problem.

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a damped Peyrard-Bishop DNA model taking into account long-range interactions with distance dependence |l|^-s on the elastic coupling constant between different DNA base pairs. Considering both Stokes and long-range hydrodynamical damping forces, we use the discrete difference operator technique and show in the short wavelength modes that the lattice equation can be governed by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We found analytically that the technique leads to the correct expression for the breather soliton parameters. We found that the viscosity makes the amplitude of the breather to damp out. We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of the Peyrard-Bishop DNA model taking into account site dependent inhomogeneities. By means of the multiple-scale expansion in the semi-discrete approximation, the dynamics is governed by the perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We carry out a multiple-scale soliton perturbation analysis to find the effects of the variety of nonlinear inhomogeneities on the breatherlike soliton solution. During the crossing of the inhomogeneities, the coherent structure of the soliton is found stable. The global shape of the inhomogeneous molecule is merged with the shape of the homogeneous molecule. However, the velocity, the wavenumber and the angular frequency undergo a time-dependent correction that is proportional to initial width of the soliton and depends on the nature of the inhomogeneities., Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures, paper under review

In this paper, thermodynamics and phase transition are investigated for the regular Bardeen black hole. Considering the metric of the Bardeen spacetime, we derived the Unruh-Verlinde temperature. Using the first law of thermodynamics, we derived the expression of the specific heat and plot its behavior. It results that the magnetic monopole charge $\beta$ reduces the temperature and induces a thermodynamics phase transition in the spacetime. Spin-momentum locking in a semiconductor device with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a fundamental goal of nanoscale spintronics and an important prerequisite for the formation of Majorana bound states. Such a helical state is predicted in one-dimensional (1D) nanowires subject to strong Rashba SOC and spin-mixing, its hallmark being a characteristic reentrant behaviour in the conductance. Here, we report the first direct experimental observations of the reentrant conductance feature, which reveals the formation of a helical liquid, in the lowest 1D subband of an InAs nanowire. Surprisingly, the feature is very prominent also in the absence of magnetic fields. This behaviour suggests that exchange interaction exhibits substantial impact on transport in our device. We attribute the opening of the pseudogap to spin-flipping two-particle backscattering. In this work, energy distribution and thermodynamics are investigated in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime when considering corrections due to quantum vacuum fluctuations. The Einstein and M{\o}ller prescriptions were used to derive the expressions of the energy in the background. The temperature and heat capacity were also derived. The results show that due to the quantum fluctuations in the background of the Schwarzschild black hole, all the energies increase and Einstein energy differs from M{\o}ller's one. Moreover, when increasing the quantum correction factor ($a$), the difference between Einstein and M{\o}ller energies, the Unruh-Verlinde temperature as well as the heat capacity of the black hole increase while the Hawking temperature remains unchanged., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study the spatial fluctuations of the Casimir-Polder force experienced by an atom or a small sphere moved above a metallic plate at fixed separation distance. We demonstrate that unlike the mean force, the magnitude of these fluctuations crucially relies on the relaxation of conduction electron in the metallic bulk, and even achieves values that differ by orders of magnitude depending on the amount of dissipation. An ultracold atom above a horizontal mirror experiences quantum reflection from the attractive Casimir-Polder interaction, which holds it against gravity and leads to quantum levitation states. We analyze this system by using a Liouville transformation of the Schr\"odinger equation and a Langer coordinate adapted to problems with a classical turning point. Reflection on the Casimir-Polder attractive well is replaced by reflection on a repulsive wall and the problem is then viewed as an ultracold atom trapped inside a cavity with gravity and Casimir-Polder potentials acting respectively as top and bottom mirrors. We calculate numerically Casimir-Polder shifts of the energies of the cavity resonances and propose a new approximate treatment which is precise enough to discuss spectroscopy experiments aiming at tests of the weak equivalence principle on antihydrogen. --In this article we study the hydrodynamic spectrum of a superfluid confined in a cylindrical trap. We show that the dispersion relation $\omega$(q) of the phonon branch scales like $\sqrt$ q at large q, leading to a vanishingly small superfluid critical velocity. In practice the critical velocity is set by the breakdown of the hydrodynamic approximation. For a broad class of superfluids, this entails a reduction of the critical velocity by a factor ($\omega$ $\perp$ /\"i1/2c) 1/3 with respect to the free-space prediction (here $\omega$ $\perp$ is the trapping frequency and \"i1/2c the chemical potential of the cloud).

We investigate thermodynamics and Phase transition of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole surrounded by quintessence. Using thermodynamical laws of black holes, we derive the expressions of some thermodynamics quantities for the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole surrounded by quintessence. The variations of the temperature and heat capacity with the entropy were plotted for different values of the state parameter related to the quintessence, $\omega_{q}$, and the normalization constant related to the density of quintessence $c$. We show that when varying the entropy of the black hole a phase transition is observed in the black hole. We investigate Hawking radiation from a five-dimensional Lovelock black hole using the Hamilton-Jacobi method. The behavior of the rate of radiation is plotted for various values of the ultraviolet correction parameter and the cosmological constant. The results show that, owing to the ultraviolet correction and the presence of dark energy represented by the cosmological constant, the black hole radiates at a slower rate in comparison to the case without ultraviolet correction or cosmological constant. We investigate quasinormal modes (QNMs) and Hawking radiation of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole sur-rounded by quintessence. The Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method is used to evaluate the QNMs and the rate of radiation. The results show that due to the interaction of the quintessence with the background metric, the QNMs of the black hole damp more slowly when increasing the density of quintessence and the black hole radiates at slower rate., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

In this work, quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the Schwarzschild black hole are investigated by taking into account the quantum fluctuations. Gravitational and Dirac perturbations were considered for this case. The Regge-Wheeler gauge and the Dirac equation were used to derive the perturbation equations of the gravitational and Dirac fields respectively and the third order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation method is used for the computing of the quasinormal frequencies. The random acceleration model is one of the simplest non-Markovian stochastic systems and has been widely studied in connection with applications in physics and mathematics. However, the occupation time and related properties are non-trivial and not yet completely understood. In this paper we consider the occupation time $T_+$ of the one-dimensional random acceleration model on the positive half-axis. We calculate the first two moments of $T_+$ analytically and also study the statistics of $T_+$ with Monte Carlo simulations. One goal of our work was to ascertain whether the occupation time $T_+$ and the time $T_m$ at which the maximum of the process is attained are statistically equivalent. For regular Brownian motion the distributions of $T_+$ and $T_m$ coincide and are given by L\'evy's arcsine law. We show that for randomly accelerated motion the distributions of $T_+$ and $T_m$ are quite similar but not identical. This conclusion follows from the exact results for the moments of the distributions and is also consistent with our Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The weakly interacting helical Luttinger liquid, due to spin momentum locking, is characterized by extremely peculiar local observables: we show that the density-density correlation functions do not exhibit signatures of Friedel and Wigner oscillations, and that spin-spin correlation functions, which are strongly anisotropic, witness the formation of a planar spin wave. Moreover, we demonstrate that the most relevant scattering potentials involving a localized impurity are not able to modify the electron density, while only magnetic impurities can pin the planar spin density wave., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We investigate intercellular insulin dynamics in an array of diffusively coupled pancreatic islet \b{eta}-cells. The cells are connected via gap junction coupling, where nearest neighbor interactions are included. Through the multiple scale expansion in the semi-discrete approximation, we show that the insulin dynamics can be governed by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The localized solutions of this equation are reported. The results suggest from the biophysical point of view that the insulin propagates in pancreatic islet \b{eta}-cells using both temporal and spatial dimensions in the form of localized modulated waves.

We study transport properties of the helical edge channels of a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, in the presence of electron-electron interactions and weak, local Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The combination of the two allows for inelastic backscattering that does not break time-reversal symmetry (TRS), resulting in interaction-dependent power law corrections to the conductance. Here, we use a non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism to describe the situation of a long, one-dimensional edge channel coupled to external reservoirs, where the applied bias is the leading energy scale. By calculating explicitly the corrections to the conductance up to fourth order of the impurity strength, we analyse correlated single- and two-particle backscattering processes on a microscopic level. Interestingly, we show that the modeling of the leads together with the breaking of Galilean invariance has important consequences on the transport properties. Such breaking occurs, because the Galilean invariance of the bulk spectrum transforms into an emergent Lorentz invariance of the edge spectrum. With this broken Galilean invariance at the QSH edge, we find a contribution to single particle backscattering with a very low power scaling, while in the presence of Galilean invariance the leading contribution would be due to correlated two-particle backscattering only. This difference is further reflected in different values of the Fano factor of the shot noise, an experimentally observable quantity. The described behaviour is specific to the Rashba scatterer, and does not occur in the case of backscattering off a time-reversal breaking, magnetic impurity., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

We analyse the periodicity of persistent currents in quantum spin Hall loops, partly covered with an $s$-wave superconductor, in the presence of a flux tube. Much like in normal (non-helical) metals, the periodicity of the single-particle spectrum goes from $\Phi_0 = h/e$ to $\Phi_0/2$ as the length of the superconductor is increased past the coherence length of the superconductor. We further analyze the periodicity of the persistent current, which is a many-body effect. Interestingly, time reversal symmetry and parity conservation can significantly change the period. We find a $2\Phi_0$-periodic persistent current in two distinct regimes, where one corresponds to a Josephson junction and the other one to an Aharonov-Bohm setup., Comment: To appear in the special issue of Physica E, in memory of Markus B\"uttiker

The properties of the strongly interacting edge states of two dimensional topological insulators in the presence of two particle backscattering are investigated. We find an anomalous behavior of the density-density correlation functions, which show oscillations that are neither of Friedel nor of Wigner type: they instead represent a Wigner crystal of fermions of fractional charge e/2, with e the electron charge. By studying the Fermi operator, we show that the state characterized by such fractional oscillations still bears the signatures of spin momentum locking. Finally, we compare the spin-spin correlation functions and the density-density correlation functions to argue that the fractional Wigner crystal is characterized by a non trivial spin texture., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Non-local pairing processes at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor are usually suppressed by helicity. However, additional proximity of a ferromagnetic insulator can substantially influence the helical constraint and therefore open a new conduction channel by allowing for crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) processes. We show a one-to-one correspondence between CAR and the emergence of odd-frequency triplet superconductivity. Hence, non-local transport experiments that identify CAR in helical liquids yield smoking-gun evidence for unconventional superconductivity. Interestingly, we identify a setup -- composed of a superconductor flanked by two ferromagnetic insulators -- that allows us to favor CAR over electron cotunneling which is known to be a difficult but essential task to be able to measure CAR., Comment: 4 pages + supplementary material, 3 figures. We develop a Gaussian variational approach in replica space to investigate the phase diagram of a one-dimensional interacting disordered topological superconducting wire in the strong coupling regime. This method allows for a non-perturbative treatment in the disorder strength, electron- electron interactions and the superconducting pairing amplitude. We find only two stable phases: a topological superconducting phase, and a glassy, non-topological localized phase, characterized by replica symmetry breaking., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures
