Abstract

Metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) is a widely used technique for producing polarized $^{3}$He. In connection with an experiment to search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) we have built a MEOP based $^{3}$He polarization and injection system to prepare 80 % polarized $^{3}$He at room temperature which will be injected into a ~400 mK measurement cell filled with superfluid $^{4}$He. We describe the polarization and injection system, which is designed to allow for final concentrations of $10^{-8}-10^{-10}$ of 80 % polarized $^{3}$He in the superfluid filled measurement cell. Only $\approx0.72\%$ polarization loss due to gradients is expected during injection

Abstract

We present a coil system designed to generate a highly uniform magnetic field for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. It consists of a main $B_0$ coil and a set of auxiliary coils mounted on a cubic structure with a side length of 273 cm, inside a large magnetically shielded room (MSR). We have assembled this system and characerized its performances with a mapping robot. The apparatus is able to generate a 1 $\mu$ T vertical field with a relative root mean square deviation $\sigma$ ($B_z$)/$B_z$ = 3 $\times$ $10^{-5}$ over the volume of interest, a cylinder of radius 40 cm and height 30 cm. This level of uniformity overcomes the n2EDM requirements, allowing a measurement of the neutron Electric Dipole Moment with a sensitivity better than 1 $\times$ $10^{-27}$ ecm., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The Nab experiment will measure the electron-neutrino correlation and Fierz interference term in free neutron beta decay to test the Standard Model and probe Beyond the Standard Model Physics. Using National Instrument's PXIe-5171 Reconfigurable Oscilloscope module, we have developed a data acquisition system that is not only capable of meeting Nab's specifications, but flexible enough to be adapted in situ as the experimental environment dictates. The L1 and L2 trigger logic can be reconfigured to optimize the system for coincidence event detection at runtime through configuration files and LabVIEW controls. This system is capable of identifying L1 triggers at at least $1$ MHz, while reading out a peak signal rate of approximately $2$ GB/s. During commissioning, the system ran at a sustained readout rate of $400$ MB/s of signal data originating from roughly $6$ kHz L2 triggers, well within the peak performance of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

The primary objective of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, active comparator, Phase IIb study was to model the dose–response of batefenterol and select a dose for Phase III development.Patients and methods: Patients aged ≥40 years with COPD and FEV1 ≥30% and ≤70% predicted normal were randomized equally to batefenterol 37.5, 75, 150, 300, or 600 µg, placebo, or umeclidinium/vilanterol (UMEC/VI) 62.5/25 µg once daily. The primary and secondary endpoints were weighted-mean FEV1 over 0–6 hours post-dose and trough FEV1, analyzed by Bayesian and maximum likelihood estimation Emax of dose–response modeling, respectively, on day 42.Results: In the intent-to-treat population (N=323), all batefenterol doses demonstrated statistically and clinically significant improvements from baseline vs placebo in the primary and secondary endpoints (191.1–292.8 and 182.2–244.8 mL, respectively), with a relatively flat dose–response. In the subgroup reversible to salbutamol, there were greater differences between batefenterol doses. Lung function improvements with batefenterol ≥150 µg were comparable with those with UMEC/VI. Batefenterol was well tolerated and no new safety signals were observed.Conclusion: Batefenterol 300 µg may represent the optimal dose for Phase III studies. Abstract

Recently, the n$^3$He collaboration reported a measurement of the parity-violating (PV) proton directional asymmetry $A_{\mathrm {PV}} = (1.55\pm 0.97~\mathrm {(st\ at)} \pm 0.24~\mathrm {(sys)})\times 10^{-8}$ in the capture reaction of ${}^3$He$(\vec {n},{\mathrm p}){}^3$H at meV incident neutron energies. The result increased the limited inventory of precisely measured and calculable PV observables in few-body systems required to further understand the structure of hadronic weak interaction. In this letter, we report the experimental and theoretical investigation of a parity conserving (PC) asymmetry $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ in the same reaction (the first ever measured PC observable at meV neutron energies). As a result of S- and P-wave mixing in the reaction, the $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ is inversely proportional to the neutron wavelength $\lambda$. The experimental value is $(\lambda\times A_{\mathrm {PC}})\equiv\beta= (-1.97 \pm 0.28~\mathrm{(stat)}\pm 0.12~\mathrm{(sys)}) \times 10^{-6}$ Amstrongs. We present results for a theoretical analysis of this reaction by solving the four-body scattering problem within the hyperspherical harmonic method. We find that in the ${}^3$He$(\vec {n},{\mathrm p}){}^3$H reaction, $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ depends critically on the energy and width of the close $0^-$ resonant state of ${}^4$He, resulting in a large sensitivity to the spin-orbit components of the nucleon-nucleon force and even to the three-nucleon force. The analysis of the accurately measured $A_{\mathrm {PC}}$ and $A_{\mathrm {PV}}$ using the same few-body theoretical models gives essential information needed to interpret the PV asymmetry in the ${}^3$He$(\vec {n}, {\mathrm p}){}^3$H reaction., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

High-precision searches for an electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) require stable and uniform magnetic field environments. We present the recent achievements of degaussing and equilibrating the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We present the final degaussing configuration that will be used for n2EDM after numerous studies. The optimized procedure results in a residual magnetic field that has been reduced by a factor of two. The ultra-low field is achieved with the full magnetic-field-coil system, and a large vacuum vessel installed, both in the MSR. In the inner volume of ~1.4 m^3, the field is now more uniform and below 300 pT. In addition, the procedure is faster and dissipates less heat into the magnetic environment, which in turn, reduces its thermal relaxation time from 12 h down to ~1.5 h.

Abstract

Upon its release the Gaia DR3 catalogue has led to tremendous progress in multiple fields of astronomy by providing the complete astrometric solution for nearly 1.5 billion sources. We analysed the photometric and astrometric results for Hydrogen-deficient Carbon (HdC), Extreme Helium (EHe), and DYPer type stars to identify any potential biases and thus to select stars suitable for kinematic and spatial distribution studies. We investigated the impact of photometric declines in R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars on Gaia astrometry using information from the Gaia IPD process cross-matched with light curves. We have reached the conclusion that the astrometric fits for numerous RCB stars are not valid due to the Gaia PSF chromaticity effect in both shape and centroid. The astrometric results of all stars with a significant time-dependent colour variation should be similarly affected. RCB stars might thus be promising sources to correct this effect in future Gaia releases. Furthermore, after validating the Gaia astrometric results for 92 stars, we observed that the majority of HdC and EHe stars are distributed across the three old stellar structures, the thick disk, the bulge and the halo. However, we have also uncovered evidence indicating that some of them exhibit orbits characteristic of the thin disk. This is also particularly true for all DYPer type stars studied. Finally, we have produced a list of star memberships for each Galactic substructure, and provided a list of heliocentric radial velocities and associated errors for targets not observed by Gaia DR3. We are beginning to observe a relationship between kinematics, stellar population, and metallicity in RCB and EHe stars. Abstract

The Gaia DR3 release includes heliocentric radial velocity measurements and velocity variability indices for tens of millions of stars observed over 34 months.In this study, we utilise these indices to investigate the intrinsic radial velocity variations of Hydrogen-deficient Carbon (HdC) stars and Extreme Helium (EHe) stars across their large ranges of temperature and brightness. Taking advantage of the newly defined HdC temperature classes, we examine the evolution of the total velocity amplitude with effective temperature. Additionally, we analyse the variation in the dust production rate of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars with temperature using two different proxies for the photometric state of RCB stars: one from Gaia and another from the 2MASS survey. Our observations revealed a trend in the evolution of the maximum radial velocity amplitude across each HdC temperature class. Similarly, we also observed a correlation between stellar temperature and the dust production rate. Interestingly, we possibly observed for the first time some variations of the intrinsic radial velocity amplitude and the dust production rate with HdC temperature class. If confirmed, these variations would indicate that the helium shell-burning giant stage starts with strong atmospheric motions that decrease in strength, up to $\sim$6000 K, before picking up again as the HdC star atmosphere shrinks further in size and reaches warmer temperatures. Abstract

Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. Abstract

We present a novel Active Magnetic Shield (AMS), designed and implemented for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The experiment will perform a high-sensitivity search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Magnetic-field stability and control is of key importance for n2EDM. A large, cubic, 5m side length, magnetically shielded room (MSR) provides a passive, quasi-static shielding-factor of about 10^5 for its inner sensitive volume. The AMS consists of a system of eight complex, feedback-controlled compensation coils constructed on an irregular grid spanned on a volume of less than 1000m^3 around the MSR. The AMS is designed to provide a stable and uniform magnetic-field environment around the MSR, while being reasonably compact. The system can compensate static and variable magnetic fields up to +-50muT (homogeneous components) and +-5muT (first-order gradients), suppressing them to a few muT in the sub-Hertz frequency range. The presented design concept and implementation of the AMS fulfills the requirements of the n2EDM experiment and can be useful for other applications, where magnetically silent environments are important and spatial constraints inhibit simpler geometrical solutions.

11. Are there efficacious treatments for treating the fatigue–sleep disturbance–depression symptom cluster in breast cancer patients? A Rapid Evidence Assessment of the Literature (REAL©)

A systematic review was conducted to determine whether there are specific interventions (ie, medical, pharmacological, behavioral, psychological, and complementary medicine approaches) that are effective in mitigating the fatigue–sleep disturbance–depression symptom cluster in breast cancer patients, using the Rapid Evidence Assessment of the Literature (REAL©) process. Methods: Peer-reviewed literature was searched across multiple databases; from database inception – October 2011, using keywords pre-identified to capture randomized controlled trials (RCT) relevant to the research question. Methodological bias was assessed using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) 50 checklist. Confidence in the estimate of effect and assessment of safety were also evaluated across the categories of included interventions via the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology. Results: The initial search yielded 531 citations, of which 41 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, twelve RCTs reported on all three symptoms, and eight of these were able to be included in the GRADE analysis. The remaining 29 RCTs reported on two symptoms. Studies were of mixed quality and many were underpowered. Overall, results suggest that there is: 1) promising evidence for the effectiveness of various treatment types in mitigating sleep disturbance in breast cancer patients; 2) mixed evidence for fatigue; 3) little evidence for treating depression; and 4) no clear evidence that treatment of one symptom results in effective treatment for other symptoms. Conclusion: More high-quality studies are needed to determine the impact of varied treatments in mitigating the fatigue–sleep disturbance–depression symptom cluster in breast cancer patients. Furthermore, we encourage future studies to examine the psychometric and clinical validity of the hypothesized relationship between the symptoms in the fatigue–sleep disturbance–depression symptom cluster. Abstract

We report on a search for a new, short-range, spin-dependent interaction using a modified version of the experimental apparatus used to measure the permanent neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This interaction, which could be mediated by axion-like particles, concerned the unpolarized nucleons (protons and neutrons) near the material surfaces of the apparatus and polarized ultracold neutrons stored in vacuum. The dominant systematic uncertainty resulting from magnetic-field gradients was controlled to an unprecedented level of approximately 4 pT/cm using an array of optically-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers and magnetic-field maps independently recorded using a dedicated measurement device. No signature of a theoretically predicted new interaction was found, and we set a new limit on the product of the scalar and the pseudoscalar couplings $g_sg_p\lambda^2 < 8.3 \times 10^{-28}\,\text{m}^2$ (95% C.L.) in a range of $5\,\mu\text{m} < \lambda < 25\,\text{mm}$ for the monopole-dipole interaction. This new result confirms and improves our previous limit by a factor of 2.7 and provides the current tightest limit obtained with free neutrons.

Abstract

The neutron spin rotation (NSR) collaboration used parity-violating spin rotation of transversely polarized neutrons transmitted through a 0.5 m liquid helium target to constrain weak coupling constants between nucleons. While consistent with theoretical expectation, the upper limit set by this measurement on the rotation angle is limited by statistical uncertainties. The NSR collaboration is preparing a new measurement to improve this statistically-limited result by about an order of magnitude. In addition to using the new high-flux NG-C beam at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, the apparatus was upgraded to take advantage of the larger-area and more divergent NG-C beam. Significant improvements are also being made to the cryogenic design. Details of these improvements and readiness of the upgraded apparatus are presented. We also comment on how recent theoretical work combining effective field theory techniques with the 1/Nc expansion of QCD along with previous NN weak measurements can be used to make a prediction for dϕ/dz in 4He. An experiment using the same apparatus with a room-temperature target was carried out at LANSCE to place limits on parity-conserving rotations from possible fifth-force interactions to complement previous studies. We sought this interaction using a slow neutron polarimeter that passed transversely polarized slow neutrons by unpolarized slabs of material arranged so that this interaction would tilt the plane of polarization and develop a component along the neutron momentum. The results of this measurement and its impact on the neutron-matter coupling gA2 from such an interaction are presented. The NSR collaboration is also preparing a new measurement that uses an upgraded version of the room-temperature target to be run on the NG-C beamline; and it is expected to constrain gA2 by at least two additional orders of magnitude for λc between 1 cm and 1 μm.

Abstract

The possibility of relatively fast neutron oscillations into a mirror neutron state is not excluded experimentally when a mirror magnetic field is considered. Direct searches for the disappearance of neutrons into mirror neutrons in a controlled magnetic field have previously been performed using ultracold neutrons, with some anomalous results reported. We describe a technique using cold neutrons to perform a disappearance and regeneration search, which would allow us to unambiguously identify a possible oscillation signal. An experiment using the existing General Purpose-Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will have the sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space of prior ultracold neutron searches and confirm or refute previous claims of observation. This instrument can also conclusively test the validity of recently suggested oscillation-based explanations for the neutron lifetime anomaly.

Abstract

Neutron beta decay is one of the most fundamental processes in nuclear physics and provides sensitive means to uncover the details of the weak interaction. Neutron beta decay can evaluate the ratio of axial-vector to vector coupling constants in the standard model, λ = gA/gV, through multiple decay correlations. The Nab experiment will carry out measurements of the electron-neutrino correlation parameter a with a precision of δa/a = 10−3 and the Fierz interference term b to δb = 3 × 10−3 in unpolarized free neutron beta decay. These results, along with a more precise measurement of the neutron lifetime, aim to deliver an independent determination of the ratio λ with a precision of δλ/λ = 0.03% that will allow an evaluation of Vud and sensitively test CKM unitarity, independent of nuclear models. Nab utilizes a novel, long asymmetric spectrometer that guides the decay electron and proton to two large area silicon detectors in order to precisely determine the electron energy and an estimation of the proton momentum from the proton time of flight. The Nab spectrometer is being commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Lab. We present an overview of the Nab experiment and recent updates on the spectrometer, analysis, and systematic effects.

Abstract

Novel experimental techniques are required to make the next big leap in neutron electric dipole moment experimental sensitivity, both in terms of statistics and systematic error control. The nEDM experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source (nEDM@SNS) will implement the scheme of Golub & Lamoreaux [Phys. Rep., 237, 1 (1994)]. The unique properties of combining polarized ultracold neutrons, polarized 3He, and superfluid 4He will be exploited to provide a sensitivity to ∼ 10−28 e · cm. Our cryogenic apparatus will deploy two small (3 L) measurement cells with a high density of ultracold neutrons produced and spin analyzed in situ. The electric field strength, precession time, magnetic shielding, and detected UCN number will all be enhanced compared to previous room temperature Ramsey measurements. Our 3He co-magnetometer offers unique control of systematic effects, in particular the Bloch-Siegert induced false EDM. Furthermore, there will be two distinct measurement modes: free precession and dressed spin. This will provide an important self-check of our results. Following five years of “critical component demonstration,” our collaboration transitioned to a “large scale integration” phase in 2018. An overview of our measurement techniques, experimental design, and brief updates are described in these proceedings.

Abstract

We present the new spectrometer for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) search at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), called n2EDM. The setup is at room temperature in vacuum using ultracold neutrons. n2EDM features a large UCN double storage chamber design with neutron transport adapted to the PSI UCN source. The design builds on experience gained from the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017. An order of magnitude increase in sensitivity is calculated for the new baseline setup based on scalable results from the previous apparatus, and the UCN source performance achieved in 2016.

Abstract

Ultra-low-mass axions are a viable dark matter candidate and may form a coherently oscillating classical field. Nuclear spins in experiments on Earth might couple to this oscillating axion dark-matter field, when propagating on Earth's trajectory through our Galaxy. This spin coupling resembles an oscillating pseudo-magnetic field which modulates the spin precession of nuclear spins. Here we report on the null result of a demonstration experiment searching for a frequency modulation of the free spin-precession signal of \magHg in a \SI{1}{\micro\tesla} magnetic field. Our search covers the axion mass range $10^{-16}~\textrm{eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 10^{-13}~\textrm{eV}$ and achieves a peak sensitivity to the axion-nucleon coupling of $g_{aNN} \approx 3.5 \times 10^{-6}~\textrm{GeV}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 4 images, submitted to SciPost Physics

Abstract

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

Abstract

The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) detector has been designed to address the full scope of the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC) physics program as presented by the National Academy of Science and provide a deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter. To accomplish this, the ECCE detector offers nearly acceptance and energy coverage along with excellent tracking and particle identification. The ECCE detector was designed to be built within the budget envelope set out by the EIC project while simultaneously managing cost and schedule risks. Abstract

This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark-gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detecter system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirmed the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, a few insights on the potential 2nd Interaction Region can (IR) were also documented which could serve as a guidepost for the future development of a second EIC detector.

Abstract

We report a measurement of two energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions from polarized slow neutron capture on the ${}^{35}$Cl nucleus, one parity-odd correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{\gamma}}$ and one parity-even correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{n}} \times \vec{k_{\gamma}}$. A parity violating asymmetry can appear in this reaction due to the weak nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction which mixes opposite parity S and P-wave levels in the excited compound $^{36}$Cl nucleus formed upon slow neutron capture. If parity-violating (PV) and parity-conserving (PC) terms both exist, the measured differential cross section can be related to them via $\frac{d\sigma}{d\Omega}\propto1+A_{\gamma, PV}\cos\theta+A_{\gamma,PC}\sin\theta$. The PV and PC asymmetries for energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions for polarized slow neutron capture on $^{35}$Cl averaged over the neutron energies from 2.27~meV to 9.53~meV were measured to be $A_{\gamma,PV}=(-23.9\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{\gamma,PC}=(0.1\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$. These results are consistent with previous experimental results. Systematic errors were quantified and shown to be small compared to the statistical error. These asymmetries in the angular distributions of the gamma rays emitted from the capture of polarized neutrons in $^{35}$Cl were used to verify the operation and data analysis procedures for the NPDGamma experiment which measured the parity-odd asymmetry in the angular distribution of gammas from polarized slow neutron capture on protons.

Abstract

We performed feasibility studies for various measurements that are related to unpolarized TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. The processes studied include semi-inclusive Deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The single hadron cross sections and multiplicities were extracted as a function of the DIS variables $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton and $P_T$, which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to accumulated luminosities of 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to be submitted in joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

Abstract

We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, to be submitted to joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

Abstract

The ECCE detector has been recommended as the selected reference detector for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). A series of simulation studies have been carried out to validate the physics feasibility of the ECCE detector. In this paper, detailed studies of heavy flavor hadron and jet reconstruction and physics projections with the ECCE detector performance and different magnet options will be presented. The ECCE detector has enabled precise EIC heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements with a broad kinematic coverage. Abstract

Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/$\psi$ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

In contrast to the $e \leftrightarrow \mu$ CLFV transition for which very stringent limits exist, there is still a relatively large discovery space for the $e \to \tau$ CLFV transition, potentially to be explored by the EIC. With the latest detector design of ECCE (EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment) and projected integral luminosity of the EIC, we find the $\tau$-leptons created in the DIS process $ep\to \tau X$ are expected to be identified with high efficiency. A first ECCE simulation study, restricted to the 3-prong $\tau$-decay mode and with limited statistics for the Standard Model backgrounds, estimates that the EIC will be able to improve the current exclusion limit on $e\to \tau$ CLFV by an order of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to NIM

Abstract

We describe the design and performance the calorimeter systems used in the ECCE detector design to achieve the overall performance specifications cost-effectively with careful consideration of appropriate technical and schedule risks. The calorimeter systems consist of three electromagnetic calorimeters, covering the combined pseudorapdity range from -3.7 to 3.8 and two hadronic calorimeters. Abstract

We present the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute which features an interior cubic volume with each side of length 2.92m, thus providing an accessible space of 25m3. The MSR has 87 openings up to 220mm diameter to operate the experimental apparatus inside, and an intermediate space between the layers for sensitive signal processing electronics. The characterization measurements show a remanent magnetic field in the central 1m3 below 100pT, and a field below 600pT in the entire inner volume, up to 4\,cm to the walls. The quasi-static shielding factor at 0.01\,Hz measured with a sinusoidal 2muT peak-to-peak signal is about 100,000 in all three spatial directions and rises fast with frequency to reach 10^8 above 1Hz., Comment: 10 pages, 15 Figures, submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments

Abstract

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 2 appendices, 3 tables

Abstract

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is the next generation of precision QCD facility to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. There are a significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described.

Abstract

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

This is in complete contrast to the $\sim$130 known Galactic HdC stars that are notorious for being heavy dust producers, i.e. the R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. Together they form a rare class of supergiant stars that are thought to originate from the merger of CO/He white dwarf binary systems, otherwise known as the double-degenerate scenario. We searched for new dustless HdC (dLHdC) stars. We used primarily the 2MASS and GAIA eDR3 catalogues to select candidates that were followed-up spectroscopically. We discovered 27 new dLHdC stars, one new RCB star and two new EHe stars. Surprisingly, 20 of the new dLHdC stars share a characteristic of the known dLHdC star HD 148839, having lower atmospheric hydrogen deficiencies. The uncovered population of dLHdC stars exhibit a Bulge-like distribution, like the RCB stars, but show multiple differences from those that indicate they are a different population of HdC stars following its own evolutionary sequence with a fainter luminosity and also a narrow range of effective temperature. We found indication of a current low dust production activity for four of the new dLHdC stars which could be typical RCB stars passing through a transition time. We have evidence for the first time of a large range of absolute magnitudes in the overall population of HdC stars, spanning over 3 mag. In the favoured formation framework, this is explained by a large range in the initial total WD binary mass which leads to a series of evolutionary sequences with distinct maximum brightness and initial temperature. The cold Galactic RCB stars are also noticeably fainter than the Magellanic ones, possibly due to a difference in metallicity resulting in different WD mass ratio. Abstract

Experiments dedicated to the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron require outstanding control of the magnetic field uniformity. The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute uses a 199Hg co-magnetometer to precisely monitor magnetic field variations. This co-magnetometer, in the presence of field non-uniformity, is responsible for the largest systematic effect of this measurement. To evaluate and correct that effect, offline measurements of the field non-uniformity were performed during mapping campaigns in 2013, 2014 and 2017. We present the results of these campaigns, and the improvement the correction of this effect brings to the neutron electric dipole moment measurement.

Abstract

Magnetic Johnson-Nyquist noise (JNN) originating from metal electrodes, used to create a static electric field in neutron electric-dipole-moment (nEDM) experiments, may limit the sensitivity of measurements. We present here the first dedicated study on JNN applied to a large-scale long-measurement-time experiment with the implementation of a co-magnetometry. In this study, we derive surface- and volume-averaged root-mean-square normal noise amplitudes at a certain frequency bandwidth for a cylindrical geometry. In addition, we model the source of noise as a finite number of current dipoles and demonstrate a method to simulate temporal and three-dimensional spatial dependencies of JNN. The calculations are applied to estimate the impact of JNN on measurements with the new apparatus, n2EDM, at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We demonstrate that the performances of the optically pumped $^{133}$Cs magnetometers and $^{199}$Hg co-magnetometers, which will be used in the apparatus, are not limited by JNN. Further, we find that in measurements deploying a co-magnetometer system, the impact of JNN is negligible for nEDM searches down to a sensitivity of $4\,\times\,10^{-28}\,e\cdot{\rm cm}$ in a single measurement; therefore, the use of economically and mechanically favored solid aluminum electrodes is possible.

Abstract

We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is given of the experimental method and setup, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

Abstract

We present here a technique for developing a high-throughput algorithm to fit a combination of template pulse shapes while simultaneously subtracting parameterized background noise. By convolving the psuedoinverse of the least-squares fit design matrix along a regularly sampled waveform trace, the time evolution of the fit parameters for each basis function can be determined in real-time. We approximate these sliding linear fit response functions using piecewise polynomials, and develop an FPGA-friendly algorithm to be implemented in high sample-rate data acquisition systems. This is a robust universal filter that compares well to common filters optimized for energy calibration/resolution, as well as filters optimized for timing performance, even when significant noise components are present., Comment: This work has been submitted to IEEE TNS for publication

The magnetic scalar potential can be used to design electromagnets accurately and efficiently. I will describe a practical construction algorithm: the prescribed field in a "Target" region (constrained only by Maxwell's equations) specifies boundary conditions which uniquely determine the potential in the surrounding field "Return" region. As required by the physical representation of the magnetic scalar potential, the conducting elements of the resulting coil are directed along equipotentials on the surface of each region, at equal increments of the potential. The recent measurement of the lifetime of the free neutron using the beam method has an 8.7 s (4$\sigma$) discrepancy with UCN measurements. The goal of the BL3 experiment is to improve the statistical error of this measurement and help rule out systematic uncertainties as an explanation for the discrepancy. A well-characterized neutron flux detector with flat response is essential, since the neutron flux enters linearly into the neutron lifetime. Abstract

It has been proposed that there could be a mirror copy of the standard model particles, restoring the parity symmetry in the weak interaction on the global level. Oscillations between a neutral standard model particle, such as the neutron, and its mirror counterpart could potentially answer various standing issues in physics today. Astrophysical studies and terrestrial experiments led by ultracold neutron storage measurements have investigated neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations and imposed constraints on the theoretical parameters. Recently, further analysis of these ultracold neutron storage experiments has yielded statistically significant anomalous signals that may be interpreted as neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations, assuming nonzero mirror magnetic fields. The neutron electric dipole moment collaboration performed a dedicated search at the Paul Scherrer Institute and found no evidence of neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations. Thereby, the following new lower limits on the oscillation time were obtained: $\tau_{nn'} > 352~$s at $B'=0$ (95% C.L.), $\tau_{nn'} > 6~\text{s}$ for all $0.4~\mu\text{T}9~\text{s}$ for all $5.0~\mu\text{T}

Abstract

The violation of Baryon Number, $\mathcal{B}$, is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR %experiment program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source (ESS) to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\rightarrow \bar{n}$) via mixing, neutron-antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow \bar{n}$), and neutron disappearance ($n\rightarrow n'$); the effective $\Delta \mathcal{B}=0$ process of neutron regeneration ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow n$) is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterise mixing in the neutron, antineutron, and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis, the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

Abstract

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton emission with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction $^{3}\mathrm{He}(\mathrm{n},\mathrm{p})^{3}\mathrm{H}$, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active $^3\rm{He}$ target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the most poorly understood aspects of electro-weak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory (EFT) calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is $A_{PV} = \left( 1.58 \pm 0.97 ~\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.24~\mathrm{(sys)}\right)\times10^{-8}$, which has the smallest uncertainty of any parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Abstract

Significant progress has been made to experimentally determine a complete set of the parity-violating (PV) weak-interaction amplitudes between nucleons. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the n$^3$He experiment that was used to measure the PV asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{PV}}$ in the direction of proton emission in the reaction $\vec{\mathrm{n}} + {^3}\mathrm{He} \rightarrow {^3}\mathrm{H} + \mathrm{p}$, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized gaseous $^3\mathrm{He}$ target. This asymmetry has was recently calculated \cite{Viviani,Viviani2}, both in the traditional style meson exchange picture, and in effective field theory (EFT), including two-pion exchange. The high precision result (published separately) obtained with the experiment described herein forms an important benchmark for hadronic PV (HPV) theory in few-body systems, where precise calculations are possible. To this day, HPV is still one of the most poorly understood aspects of the electro-weak theory. The calculations estimate the size of the asymmetry to be in the range of $(-9.4 \rightarrow 3.5)\times 10^{-8}$, depending on the framework or model. The small size of the asymmetry and the small overall goal uncertainty of the experiment of $\delta A_{\mathrm{PV}} \simeq 1\times10^{-8}$ places strict requirements on the experiment, especially on the design of the target-detector chamber. In this paper we describe the experimental setup and the measurement methodology as well as the detailed design of the chamber, including results of Garfield++ and Geant4 simulations that form the basis of the chamber design and analysis. We also show data from commissioning and production and define the systematic errors that the chamber contributes to the measured $A_{\mathrm{PV}}$. We give the final uncertainty on the measurement.

Abstract

We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a Hg-199 co-magnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. The measured value of the neutron EDM is $d_{\rm n} = (0.0\pm1.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.2_{\rm sys})\times10^{-26}e\,{\rm cm}$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL on 18.12.2019
