In Joe Crawford's last two articles, he examined the process of building standards-based curriculum documents to drive instruction in the K-8 environment. Continuing with this theme, this article explores "closing the loop" and following this work into the high school experience. There is one huge difference in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) at the high school level. The CCSS are no longer organized by distinct grade level; the CCSS are now presented as high school (9-12) standards. Because of the various and sundry organizational patterns in high school math course work (and in ELA, for that matter), it is now important for the entire high school math (and ELA) department to work together to ensure adequate learning opportunities across the entire 9-12 spectrum of high school course work. The CCSS must be parsed out over the entire 9-12 math academic experience and spread among the various courses offered and experienced by students. This article takes the reader through the steps of a high school's overall study/review of Domains and standards in those Domains and deciding which specific high school courses will address which specific Domains and standards, using the Geometry Domain as an example. Then, it discusses the actual process of developing the end-of-year (Local CCS Standards or Priority Standards) and within-year (Instructional Objectives) expectations, continuing with the Geometry Domain example. The process as detailed in the article allows the reader to create useable, aligned, and articulated learning expectations that are proven to produce meaningful improvements in student performance.

The UK Immigration Act 2016 is central to the Conservative Government's drive to create a more hostile environment for potential migrants and current 'illegal' migrants residing in the UK. The Right to Rent provisions of the Act, which require private landlords in England to conduct mandatory immigration document checks on prospective tenants, or face sizeable fines and criminal prosecution, have been highlighted as a key facet of the legislation. Drawing on qualitative interviews with key experts and analysis of Home Office guidance documents, we argue the Right to Rent has turned the private rental market into a border-check, with landlords responsibilised to perform 'everyday bordering' on behalf of the State. This creates a potentially discriminatory environment for all migrants, as well as for British citizens who lack documentation and/or may be subject to racial profiling. This article is based on original data from a qualitative study on the impact of the Right to Rent part of the Immigration Act 2016 in Scotland. Our findings show that in addition to being an integral part of the government's project of creating a 'hostile environment for immigrants', the process of extending the state's 'law and order' functions to organisations responsible for providing welfare services and distributing public goods is of wider political importance. Here, we argue that this process, what Bourdieu calls the rightward tilting of the bureaucratic field, results in widespread discrimination as it entails a shift in focus of its criminalising gaze from 'conduct' to 'status'. The effects of this rightward shift altered the categories through which welfare services were both conceived and delivered more widely. We found that the almost universal opposition of the housing sector to the unwanted imposition of duties previously confined to border control agencies shows the extent to which the state is not a unitary monolith but is, rather, a site of perpetual struggle and contestation. By locating the perspective of housing professionals in relation to the government's attempts to redraw the boundaries of the state's own responsibility, we can gain a valuable insight into the processes of state crafting, which have wider implications beyond merely the creation of a hostile environment for immigrants. Drawing on recent qualitative research on the UK's Immigration Act 2016, this article sets out to explain the opposition of social housing professionals to the imposition of the Right to Rent. By locating this policy intervention within the evolving geographies of state regulation, it is possible to account for the mechanisms through which housing professionals can resist the extension of duties that were previously the remit of border agents and immigration officials. Synthesizing Bourdieu's critical sociology with Boltanski and Thevenot's sociology of critique helps explain not only the governmental underpinnings of contemporary immigration rhetoric, but also the forms of resistance for which housing professionals display a strong justification in exercising. The universal nature of 'classification struggles' within and beyond state institutions extends the relevance of this research to encompass most, if not all, welfarist regimes operating within actually existing neoliberal orders. The analysis of the findings of this research has wider implications that reach beyond housing and urban studies while immigration persists as one of the most significant contemporary political issues, almost without geographical exception, right across the globe. They mention the lack of precise definitions of aspiration as opposed to choices or expectations, the fact that aspirations are affected by economic and labor concerns, and the need for further research on how current housing conditions impact aspirations.

This paper is to be read as one half of a twofold analysis of recent qualitative research on the housing aspirations of the people of Scotland, focusing specifically on the dimension of housing tenure. Moving beyond individual subjective preferences (i.e. what people “consciously” want or desire in relation to housing), this paper draws influence from David Harvey’s historical materialist approach to illustrate the importance of understanding the dialectical relation between objective reality and subjective preferences. We argue that it is by examining the broad homologies between the qualitative data on one hand, and the corresponding epochs of capital accumulation on the other, that important power structures can be made visible, and changes in housing aspirations over time better understood.
