Abstract

Report describes experiments on simulated flow of blood in atherosclerotic human coronary artery. Experiments performed on polyurethane cast made from S-shaped coronary artery of cadaver. Sucrose solution with viscosity of blood pumped through cast at physiologically realistic rates, and flow made pulsatile by mechanism alternately compressing and releasing elastic tube just upstream of cast.

39. In-vivo estimation of left ventricular mass: A double indicator technique using a single sensing catheter1.

Abstract

To estimate left ventricular muscle mass for diagnosis in cardiac disease a coronary sinus catheter was developed that combines repetitive serial measurement of hydrogen concentration and thermodilution blood flow for estimation of left ventricular mass. The temperature of the injected indicator is measured by a thermistor within the lumen of a coronary sinus catheter. A platinum band encircling the catheter measures hydrogen concentration. Blood and blood-injectate temperature is measured by a thermistor appended to the outside of the band. The rate at which hydrogen leaves the tissue and is detected in venous blood depends directly on the rate of blood flow and inversely on the mass of tissue. Single exponential hydrogen washout curves were obtained and the washout rate constant measured at the same time thermodilution flows were recorded. Live dogs, pigs, and calves were catheterized using this instrument and each ventricle weighed after death. Calculated weights and actual weights showed a correlation coefficient of 0·973; p< 0·001. 46. Megaloblastic Anemia in Association with Jejunal Diverticula

Abstract

In 1930 Taylor described a case of jejunal diverticulosis associated with pernicious anemia.1 Since that time, macrocytic anemia with intestinal diverticula has been described in 18 additional cases.2-14 In 8 of these, gastric acid was demonstrated, thus essentially excluding Addisonian pernicious anemia. In 9 of the cases, achlorhydria or "nearly complete achlorhydria" was noted; in 2 reports, the presence of gastric acid was not mentioned13,14 (Table 1). This report describes another case of non-Addisonian megaloblastic anemia apparently due to small bowel diverticulosis. REPORT OF A CASE An 85-year-old retired white carpenter was admitted to Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital Center on Sept. 30, 1959, with the history of diarrhea and weight loss of 4 years' duration.
