The operating range extension of radial compressors is a crucial aspect in turbocharging the internal combustion engines in order to extend the operating range of the system at high efficiency for fuel and environmental impact reduction. The future scenario of automotive propulsion will have the fuel cells at the top of the ranking of possible reference systems in substitution of thermal reciprocating engines. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells for automotive or aerospace vehicles are frequently turbocharged because compressed air for the fuel cell stack is required in the cathode system. Therefore, like in turbocharged internal combustion engines, a radial compressor is combined and connected with a radial turbine to exploit the thermal energy of the exhaust gas from the fuel cell. The study and the development of this sort of radial turbomachinery is still strategic to guarantee high performance of the overall propulsion system. The operating range is an important issue and current turbocharger design must be adapted to the new requirements of the fuel cells systems with a need for extending it. Various techniques to extend the operating range of the centrifugal compressor have been investigated and a summary is reported in this work, with a focus on the casing treatment. Through a CFD simulation campaign with appropriate simplified models, the effects of installing the ported shroud, the shutter or the axial groove have been calculated with respect to a baseline configuration. These simulations have supported the identification of the main limits and advantages for each of these solutions at different operating regimes. The performance maps and some physical parameters of interest have been compared.

Modern compressor design targets require high performance and a wide operating range in order to reduce the environmental impact. To understand the fluid dynamics mechanisms that trigger instability, studying the system at the stability limit is required. In this work, a two-stage back-to-back centrifugal compressor for refrigerant applications has been simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques using unsteady calculations in different operating points close to surge. These models have been validated by comparing numerical performance with experimental data. An in-depth fluid dynamics analysis combined with the monitoring of several pressure signals, postprocessed with FFT, identified different flow phenomena in the two stages toward the surge limit. The key role of the volute that induces a stronger upstream counterpressure in the first stage has been highlighted. This effect causes the formation of high entropy (low momentum) rotating cells in the diffuser that involve a higher channel portion with respect to the flow structure in the second diffuser. This phenomenon affects the upstream flow conditions at the impeller. In addition, the interaction between the inlet guide vane (IGV) and the inducer has been analyzed, observing that in the second stage, due to the flow nonuniformity after the intermediate compressor pipe, non-negligible separations occur. The COVID-19 infection has emerged as a disruptive pandemic at worldwide level. The study of the mechanism of contagion is one of the greatest challenges before a mass vaccination campaign that would protect populations. The study can support the development of knowledge and tools to develop possible strategies for containing its spread in future events. The saliva droplet aerosol expelled during breathing or coughing is the main cause for the propagation of the SARS-Cov-2. In this work, a URANS CFD approach was used to simulate the dispersion from the mouth of these particles in closed environments. The air conditioning system was considered. The conditions were varied to determine their impact on the diffusion of the aerosol. Lagrangian and Eulerian numerical approaches were used to model the coughing and the breathing events. These were validated with the puff theory, numerical and experimental results. A realistic case of a meeting room with two persons was simulated. Different characteristics of the expulsed aerosols and different ventilation system configurations were considered to demonstrate how these simulations can support management strategies for indoor occupation. Finally, the effect of the protective mask was introduced to quantify its beneficial effects to support safe indoor occupation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
