Haemoglobin is a key molecule for oxygen transport in vertebrates. It exhibits remarkable gene diversity in teleost fishes, reflecting adaptation to various aquatic environments. In this study, we present the dynamic evolution of haemoglobin subunit genes based on a comparison of high‐quality genome assemblies of 24 vertebrate species, including 17 teleosts (of which six are cichlids). Our findings indicate that teleost genomes contain a range of haemoglobin genes, from as few as five in fugu to as many as 43 in salmon, with the latter being the largest repertoire found in vertebrates. We find evidence that the teleost ancestor had at least four Hbα and three or four Hbβ subunit genes, and that the current gene diversity emerged during teleost radiation, driven primarily by (tandem) gene duplications, genome compaction, and rearrangement dynamics. We provide insights into the genomic organisation of haemoglobin clusters in different teleost species. We further show that the evolution of paralogous rhbdf1 genes flanking both teleost clusters (LA and MN) supports the hypothesis for the origin of the LA cluster by rearrangement within teleosts, rather than by the teleost specific whole‐genome duplication. We specifically focus on cichlid fishes, where adaptation to low oxygen environment plays role in species diversification. Our analysis of six cichlid genomes, including Pungu maclareni from the Barombi Mbo crater lake, for which we sequenced a representative genome, reveals 18–32 copies of the Hb genes, and elevated rates of non‐synonymous substitutions compared to other teleosts. The Diphyllatea (CRuMs) are heterotrophic protists currently divided into three distinct clades (Diphy I–III). Diphy I are biflagellates in the genus Diphylleia, whereas Diphy II and III represent cryptic clades comprising Collodictyon‐type quadriflagellates that were recently distinguished based on rRNA gene phylogenies. Here, we isolated Diphyllatea from freshwater crater lakes on two South Pacific islands and generated high‐quality transcriptomes from species representing each clade, including the first transcriptomic data from Diphy III. Phylogenomic analyses support the separation of Diphy II and III, while transcriptome completeness highlights the utility of these data for future studies. Cross Crater is a 65-km impact crater located in the Noachian highlands of the Terra Sirenum region of Mars. Geochemical modeling has indicated that alunite detected on the southwest wall of Cross Crater could have been formed by a fumarole upwelling into Cross Crater Lake and could indicate that an environment favorable to the development of life may have existed several billion years ago. Alunite did not form when Noachian precipitation reacted with basalt nor when the sediments and groundwater resulting from this reaction were reacted with a fumarole. Only when Cross Crater Lake water was equilibrated with sulfuric acid, thought to be a major component of the atmosphere in the Hesperian, following reaction with fumarole groundwater, did alunite precipitate from solution. Kaolinite, silica, or an Al-smectite such as montmorillonite also formed. The proximity of Cross Crater to the Tharsis volcanic region relative to Columbus crater, where alunite has also been detected, may have resulted in larger amounts of magmatic water input to the lake from sources along fractures that extend westward from Tharsis. Magmatic activity can be monitored through the chemical variations of volcanic lakes. While those lakes can be influenced by direct magmatic input, water-rock interaction processes in hydrothermal system also have a large influence. Disentangling those effects is critical to use crater lakes for volcanic activity monitoring purposes. Zinc is a volatile metal that is easily degassed and can be incorporated into fluid circulation. During degassing, Zn isotopes can be fractionated and can thus be a potential tracer of magmatic input. Here we present a novel approach using stable Zn isotopic systems to understand how dissolution/precipitation processes affect isotopic compositions of volcanic lakes and if they can be used as tracers of magmatic activity. We investigate Zn isotopes expressed as δ66Zn for four volcanic lakes ranging from hyperacidic to neutral waters. Two of them, Kawah Ijen (Indonesia) and Santa Ana (El Salvador) volcanic lakes have been sampled from 2010 to 2012 and 2000–2002, respectively, and show a clear magmatic input with extremely low pH [0.1–1]. Taal (Philippines, pH ≈ 3) and Kelud (Indonesia, pH ≈ 6.5) volcanic lakes were sampled from 2017 to 2019 and 2003–2007 respectively, and are dominated by hydrothermal rather than magmatic inputs. Hyper-acidic lakes show minimal isotopic variation over the investigated time ranges, with δ66Zn values similar to their basalt-andesitic host rocks (0.26 ± 0.08 ‰). In contrast, we observe large δ66Zn fractionation for the Taal waters (0.4 ± 0.01 ‰) compared to their basalt-andesitic host rocks but no δ66Zn temporal variations. Kelud waters show significant δ66Zn (−0.08 ± 0.06 ‰ to 0.43 ± 0.06 ‰) temporal variation. This could be related to an evolution of the lake water chemistry as the sampling period occurred between two increases in lake temperature culminating into a lava dome eruption in 2007. For Taal and Kelud volcanic lakes, enrichment factors (EF) and PHREEQc modelling indicate that Zn is depleted and suggest that Zn could precipitate in the hydrothermal system, hence fractionating Zn isotopes during these precipitation processes. This contrasts to Zn elemental and isotope values from Kawah Ijen and Santa Ana with an EF ≈ 1 suggesting that Zn is derived from host rock dissolution, in agreement with their δ66Zn. These data are still limited and a longer observation is needed in the future to highlight significant geochemical changes in volcanic lakes and their relation to volcanic activity. Rampart craters are a class of lakes or depressions in Titan's north polar region that have morphological attributes suggestive of an explosive origin. Two previous studies have proposed that rampart craters form via nitrogen or methane vapor explosions analogous to terrestrial maar explosions. We propose a new terrestrial analog for rampart craters: gas emission craters (GECs) found in permafrost zones. We evaluate the explosive origin of Titan's rampart craters by modeling the dispersal of material from an explosive vent. The dimensions of nine rampart craters with radar‐bright ramparts were used to model the explosion process. The model yields a range of explosion conditions (e.g., gas mass and reservoir depth) producing ejecta dispersal patterns matching the observed features. We find that gas masses of 1011–1014 kg are required to produce a rampart crater. We examine two explosion scenarios: (a) rapid, maar‐like vaporization and explosion of liquid nitrogen or methane, and (b) more gradual gas accumulation and explosion akin to a GEC driven by methane released from destabilizing clathrates. If Titan's crust is composed of pure water ice, the calculated gas pressures are consistent with a rapid, maar‐like explosion mechanism. If the subsurface is predominantly composed of organic materials or clathrate, either scenario may be plausible. Further research on the composition and tensile strength of Titan's subsurface are required to discriminate between hypotheses. Nevertheless, we conclude that explosive dispersal of ejecta from a vent can account for the morphologies of Titan's rampart craters and may contribute to atmospheric methane replenishment. In this study, we use a numerical model and Cassini data to determine whether explosive release of subsurface pressurized gas can form rampart craters, and estimate the amount of gas required. Repeated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys can substantially advance the understanding of spatial and temporal freeze–thaw dynamics in remote regions, such as Antarctica, where the evolution of permafrost has been poorly investigated. To enable time-lapse ERT surveys in Antarctica, an automated ERT (A-ERT) system is required, as regular site visits are not feasible. In this context, we developed a robust A-ERT prototype and installed it at the Crater Lake CALM-S site on Deception Island, Antarctica, to collect quasi-continuous ERT measurements. We developed an automated data processing workflow to efficiently filter and invert the A-ERT datasets and extract the key information required for a detailed investigation of permafrost and active-layer dynamics. In this paper, we report on the results of two complete year-round A-ERT datasets collected in 2010 and 2019 at the Crater Lake CALM-S site and compare them with available climate and borehole data. The A-ERT profile has a length of 9.5 m with an electrode spacing of 0.5 m, enabling a maximum investigation depth of approximately 2 m. Our detailed investigation of the A-ERT data and inverted results shows that the A-ERT system can detect the active-layer freezing and thawing events with high temporal resolution. The resistivity of the permafrost zone in 2019 is very similar to the values found in 2010, suggesting the stability of the permafrost over almost 1 decade at this site. The evolution of thaw depth exhibits a similar pattern in both years, with the active-layer thickness fluctuating between 0.20–0.35 m. However, a slight thinning of the active layer is evident in early 2019, compared to the equivalent period in 2010. These findings show that A-ERT datasets, combined with the new processing workflow that we developed, are an effective tool for studying permafrost and active-layer dynamics with very high resolution and minimal environmental disturbance. The ability of the A-ERT setup to monitor the spatiotemporal progression of thaw depth in two dimensions, and potentially in three dimensions, and to detect brief surficial refreezing and thawing of the active layer reveals the significance of the automatic ERT monitoring system to record continuous resistivity changes. An A-ERT monitoring setup with a longer profile length can investigate greater depths, offering effective monitoring at sites where boreholes are costly and invasive techniques are unsuitable. This shows that the A-ERT setup described in this paper can be a significant addition to the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) and the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) networks to further investigate the impact of fast-changing climate and extreme meteorological events on the upper soil horizons and to work towards establishing an early warning system for the consequences of climate change. Reconstruction of the catastrophic drainage following the Millennium Eruption (ME) of Changbaishan‐Tianchi volcano in 946 ± 20 CE is of great significance, as it contributes to improving the regional maximum flood record and develop rare flood risk analysis. However, limited knowledge exists concerning the failure mode, magnitude, and transport processes of the outburst flooding. In this work, we present a whole system model that describes the paleohydrology of catastrophic drainage using geological records along the downstream valley. The model encompasses the crater lake dynamics, an approximation of the breach erosion process and flood propagation downstream. The boulder competence method was used to constrain by reasonable flow parameters, while mitigating the uncertainty caused by the ambiguous geological paleostage indicators. Paleohydrologic analysis indicates that at least 1 km3 of water was released from the caldera, with the vertical breach erosion rates as high as 34 m/hr. Volcanic activity during the ME II may have directly contributed to triggering of the flood event. The local hydrodynamic response of the downstream riverbed captures the dynamic migration patterns of sediments across spatio‐temporal scales, offering a comprehensive interpretation of the specific scouring surfaces observed in the geological profile. The analysis of simulated inundation boundaries reveals that not all recorded inundations can be attributed to the crater lake outburst event. Reconstructions of megafloods based on downstream constraints on flood stage, velocity and discharge can help to infer and constrain the dynamics of dam failure mechanisms, and also contribute to our understanding of these complex paleohydrologic events. This study investigates the genesis of analcite in black shale from continental lakes and its implications for hydrocarbon enrichment, with a case study of the Permian Pingdiquan Formation in the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China. As an alkaline mineral, analcite is extensively developed in China's lacustrine black shale hydrocarbon source rocks and is linked to hydrocarbon distribution. However, the mechanisms of its formation and its impact on hydrocarbon generation and accumulation remain insufficiently understood. This paper employs a multi-analytical approach, including petrological observations, geochemical analysis, and X-ray diffraction, to characterize analcite and its association with hydrocarbon source rocks. The study identifies a hydrothermal sedimentary origin for analcite, suggesting that it forms under conditions of alkaline lake water and volcanic activity, which are conducive to organic matter enrichment. The analcite content in the studied samples exhibits a significant variation, with higher contents associated with hydrocarbon accumulation zones, suggesting its role in hydrocarbon generation and accumulation. This paper reports that analcite-bearing rocks display characteristics of high-quality reservoirs, enhancing the permeability and porosity of the rock, which is essential for hydrocarbon storage and migration. Changes in volcanic activity are frequently correlated with geochemical changes in crater lake waters. Volcanologists employ periodic surveys of the volcano crater lake which include pH and temperature monitoring. Due to the exposure of volcanologists to volcanic hazards, a robotic remote monitoring system was implemented in this study. A ground robot with a tethered sensing device, launcher, and retrieval system is investigated for pH and temperature real-time data sensing considering the challenging conditions of Taal Crater Lake in the Philippines. The sensing device has a tethering system attached to two mechanisms: the launcher and the retrieval systems. From the test experiments, it was found that the system can project the sensing device for a horizontal distance of 3 meters and retrieve it smoothly. The pH and temperature sensors in the device were calibrated and demonstrated acceptable levels of error and reliability. An actual test on a lake environment was implemented. The remote-controlled ground robot can navigate the sensing device to the required default position near the lake shore and effectively launch the sensing device into the water. Moreover, the tethered sensing device successfully performed real-time pH and temperature data sensing of the water and was securely retrieved from the water back to the ground robot. After the real-time data were assessed and validated, the average errors for the temperature and pH data were only 0.44% and 1.8%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volcanic lakes originate from a volcanic crater or caldera, and were a crucial component of aquatic ecosystems. Sediment bacteria play an important role in the nutrient cycling of aquatic ecosystems; however, their patterns distribution in volcanic lakes and the surrounding river habitats are unknown. In this study, we compare the sediment bacterial communities and their co-occurrence networks between these two habitats in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Northeastern China (the Arxan UNESCO Global Geopark), using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The results revealed that there were significant variations in the physicochemical parameters of the sediment between these two habitats. The bacterial α-diversity, β-diversity, and community composition of the sediment also significantly differed between these two habitats. Network analysis showed that the co-occurrence patterns and keystone taxa in the sediment differed between these two habitats. The sediment bacterial communities in the river habitats were more stable than those in the lake habitats in the face of environmental change. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that both physical (pH and MC) and nutrition-related factors (TN, TP, LOI, and TOC) were the most important environmental factors shaping the variations of bacterial community composition (BCC) in the sediment between these two habitats. Magma mingling and mixing are common processes at basaltic volcanoes and play a fundamental role in magma petrogenesis and eruption dynamics. Mingling occurs most commonly when hot primitive magma is introduced into cooler magma. Here, we investigate a scenario whereby cool, partially degassed lava is drained back into a conduit, where it mingles with hotter, less degassed magma. The 1959 eruption of Kīlauea Iki, Hawaiʻi involved 16 high fountaining episodes. During each episode, fountains fed a lava lake in a pit crater, which then partially drained back into the conduit during and after each episode. We infer highly crystalline tachylite inclusions and streaks in the erupted crystal-poor scoria to be the result of the recycling of this drain-back lava. The crystal phases present are dendrites of plagioclase, augite and magnetite/ilmenite, at sizes of up to 10 µm. Host sideromelane glass contains 7–8 wt% MgO and the tachylite glass (up to 0.5% by area) contains 2.5–6 wt% MgO. The vesicle population in the tachylite is depleted in the smallest size classes (< 0.5 mm) and has overall lower vesicle number densities and a higher degree of vesicle coalescence than the sideromelane component. The tachylite exhibits increasingly complex 'stretching and folding' mingling textures through the episodes, with discrete blocky tachylite inclusions in episodes 1 and 3 giving way to complex, folded, thin filaments of tachylite in pyroclasts erupted in episodes 15 and 16. We calculate that a lava lake crust 8–35 cm thick may have formed in the repose times between episodes, and then foundered and been entrained into the conduit during drain-back. The recycled fragments of crust would have been reheated in the conduit, inducing glass devitrification and crystallisation of pyroxene, magnetite and plagioclase dendrites and eventually undergoing ductile flow as the temperature of the fragments approached the host magma temperature. We use simple models of magma mingling to establish that stretching and folding of recycled, ductile lava could involve thinning of the clasts by up to a factor of 10 during the timescale of the eruption, consistent with observations of streaks and filaments of tachylite erupted during episodes 15 and 16, which may have undergone multiple cycles of eruption, drain-back and reheating. The last deglaciation is considered a key period for exploring the underlying dynamics of temperature changes because it was characterized by multiple millennial-scale abrupt climatic events. However, the limited number of quantitative temperature records in Northeast (NE) China covering the last deglaciation hampers a complete understanding of the mechanisms and processes behind the temperature changes that occurred in that region. Here, we present a quantitative reconstruction of summer temperature over the last deglaciation based on bacterial branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) analyzed from the sediment sequence of Lake Kielguo, a small volcanic lake in NE China. The results show that summer temperature was lowest during the interval ca. 20–18.2 calibrated (cal.) k.y. B.P. with a value of ∼11.1 °C and increased by ∼1.9 °C during Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) and by ∼2.7 °C during the transition to the Bølling-Allerød (B-A). The summer temperatures during the B-A warm interval and Younger Dryas cold interval were ∼14.1 °C and ∼12.0 °C, respectively. The summer temperature record from the Lake Kielguo sediment sequence indicates that summer warming dominated the climate change state during HS1 in East Asia, which is different from the cooling pattern controlled by winter temperatures in the North Atlantic and Greenland realms. This distinction can be explained by weakened winter cooling signals triggered by the collapse of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation when these signals propagated to East Asia, and increased summer temperature warming controlled by orbital and greenhouse gases during HS1 in East Asia. High-resolution paleoclimate records from tropical continental settings are greatly needed to advance understanding of global climate dynamics. The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project DeepCHALLA recovered a 214.8 m long sediment sequence from Lake Chala, a deep and permanently stratified (meromictic) crater lake in eastern equatorial Africa, covering the past ca. 250 000 years (250 kyr) of continuous lacustrine deposition since the earliest phase of lake-basin development. Lipid biomarker analyses on the sediments of Lake Chala can provide quantitative records of past variation in temperature and moisture balance from this poorly documented region. However, the degree to which climate proxies derived from aquatically produced biomarkers are affected by aspects of lake developmental history is rarely considered, even though it may critically influence their ability to consistently register a particular climate variable through time. Modern-system studies of Lake Chala revealed crucial information about the mechanisms underpinning relationships between proxies based on isoprenoid (iso-) and branched (br-) glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) and the targeted climate variables, but the persistence of these relationships in the past remains unclear. Here we assess the reliability of long-term climate signals registered in the sediments of Lake Chala by comparing downcore variations in GDGT distributions with major phases in lake-system evolution as reflected by independent proxies of lake depth, mixing regime and nutrient dynamics: seismic reflection data, lithology and fossil diatom assemblages. Together, these records suggest that during early lake history (before ca. 180–200 ka) the distinct mixing-related depth zones with which specific GDGT producers are associated in the modern-day lake were not yet formed, likely due to more open lake hydrology and absence of chemical water-column stratification. Consequently absolute GDGT concentrations dating to this period are relatively low, proxies sensitive to water-column stratification (e.g., branched versus isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index) display highly irregular temporal variability, and correlations between proxies are dissimilar to expectations based on modern-system understanding. A sequence of lake-system changes between ca. 180–200 and ca. 80 ka first established and then strengthened the chemical density gradient, promoting meromictic conditions despite the overall decrease in lake depth due to the basin gradually being filled up with sediments. From ca. 180 ka onward some GDGTs and derived proxies (e.g., crenarchaeol concentration, BIT index and Ipage2878R6Me) display strong ∼ 23 kyr periodicity, likely reflecting the predominantly precession-driven insolation forcing of Quaternary climate variability in low-latitude regions. Our results suggest that GDGT-based temperature and moisture-balance proxies in Lake Chala sediments reflect the climate history of eastern equatorial Africa from at least ca. 160 ka onwards, i.e., covering the complete last glacial–interglacial cycle and the penultimate glacial maximum. This work confirms the potential of lacustrine GDGTs for elucidating the climate history of tropical regions at Quaternary timescales, provided they are applied to suitably high-quality sediment archives. Additionally, their interpretation should incorporate a broader understanding of the extent to which lake-system evolution limits the extrapolation back in time of proxy-climate relationships established in the modern system. Saline-alkaline lakes often shelter high biomasses despite challenging conditions, owing to the occurrence of highly adapted phototrophs. Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte) is one such lake characterized by the stable co-dominance of the cyanobacterium Limnospira platensis and the picoeukaryote Picocystis salinarum throughout its water column. Despite light penetrating only into the uppermost meter, the prevailing co-dominance of these species persists even in light- and oxygen-deprived zones. Here, a depth profile of phototrophs metatranscriptomes, annotated using genomic data from isolated strains, is employed to identify expression patterns of genes related to carbon processing pathways including photosynthesis, transporters and fermentation. The findings indicate a prominence of gene expression associated with photosynthesis, with a peak of expression around 1 m below the surface, although the light intensity is very low and only red and dark red wavelengths can reach it, given the very high turbidity linked to the high biomass of L. platensis. Experiments on strains confirmed that both species do grow under these wavelengths, at rates comparable to those obtained under white light. A decrease in the expression of photosynthesis-related genes was observed in L. platensis with increasing depth, whereas P. salinarum maintained a very high pool of psbA transcripts down to the deepest point as a possible adaptation against photodamage, in the absence and/or very low levels of expression of genes involved in protection. In the aphotic/anoxic zone, expression of genes involved in fermentation pathways suggests active metabolism of reserve or available dissolved carbon compounds. Overall, L. platensis seems to be adapted to the uppermost water layer, where it is probably maintained thanks to gas vesicles, as evidenced by high expression of the gvpA gene. In contrast, P. salinarum occurs at similar densities throughout the water column, with a peak in abundance and gene expression levels which suggests a better adaptation to lower light intensities. Crater lake fishes are common evolutionary model systems, with recent studies suggesting a key role for gene flow in promoting rapid adaptation and speciation. However, the study of these young lakes can be complicated by human-mediated extinctions. Museum genomics approaches integrating genetic data from recently extinct species are, therefore, critical to understanding the complex evolutionary histories of these fragile systems. Here, we examine the evolutionary history of an extinct Southern Hemisphere crater lake endemic, the rainbowfish Melanotaenia eachamensis. We undertook a comprehensive sampling of extant rainbowfish populations of the Atherton Tablelands of Australia alongside historical museum material to understand the evolutionary origins of the extinct crater lake population and the dynamics of gene flow across the ecoregion. The extinct crater lake species is genetically distinct from all other nearby populations due to historic introgression between 2 proximate riverine lineages, similar to other prominent crater lake speciation systems, but this historic gene flow has not been sufficient to induce a species flock. Our results suggest that museum genomics approaches can be successfully combined with extant sampling to unravel complex speciation dynamics involving recently extinct species. Selection pressures differ along environmental gradients, and traits tightly linked to fitness (e.g., the visual system) are expected to track such variation. Along gradients, adaptation to local conditions might be due to heritable and nonheritable environmentally induced variation. Disentangling these sources of phenotypic variation requires studying closely related populations in nature and in the laboratory. The Nicaraguan lakes represent an environmental gradient in photic conditions from clear crater lakes to very turbid great lakes. From two old, turbid great lakes, Midas cichlid fish (Amphilophus cf. citrinellus) independently colonized seven isolated crater lakes of varying light conditions, resulting in a small adaptive radiation. We estimated variation in visual sensitivities along this photic gradient by measuring cone opsin gene expression among lake populations. Visual sensitivities observed in all seven derived crater lake populations shifted predictably in direction and magnitude, repeatedly mirroring changes in photic conditions. Comparing wild-caught and laboratory-reared fish revealed that 48% of this phenotypic variation is genetically determined and evolved rapidly. Decreasing intrapopulation variation as environments become spectrally narrower suggests that different selective landscapes operate along the gradient. One of the most intriguing questions of modern volcanology is the inception of an eruption. Despite efforts to detect premonitory signals, numerous unpredicted eruptions have occurred recently. It has been suggested that these unpredicted eruptions might be explained by viscosity variations in elemental sulfur accumulated within the hydrothermal systems present in several volcanic settings under the influence of organics, hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide, halogens, and ammonia. Changes in impure sulfur viscosity are more complex than those in pure S, invoked decades ago to trigger eruptions by system sealing in volcanoes hosting a crater lake. Growing evidence suggests that sulfur accumulation is a common process, not restricted to crater lakes. Moreover, both types and amounts of gas species released at the surface, critical for volcano monitoring, would be altered, following chemical reactions involving impure S, invalidating signals used to issue alerts. Impure sulfur behavior may explain puzzling degassing and contrasting signals reported at volcanoes and restless calderas worldwide, with implications for hazard assessment and volcanic-risk-mitigation strategies. Volcanic lakes in the Kuril-Kamchatka region are difficult to access, and for this reason, they remain poorly studied, with only scattered and brief data available. The authors have conducted a study of 10 lake basins using modern digital echolocation survey techniques and have also compiled and summarized published data for 15 lakes in the region, calculating their main morphometric characteristics. It has been established that many caldera lake basins are modified by young explosive funnels, extrusive or effusive domes, and exhibit traces of hydrothermal activity. While lakes of the same genetic type in the Kuril-Kamchatka region are similar in depth and depression forms, the group of caldera lakes shows less homogeneity across all morphometric indicators. It was found that the absolute heights of the reservoirs on Kamchatka Peninsula are generally greater than those on the Kuril Islands, as is often the case with the size of their basins. The volcanic lakes under study can rapidly change their volume and shape under the influence of endogenous processes. For the first time for this region, on the base of repeated observations, underwater extrusive dome rate growth and the approximate rates of 2 lake level changes were calculated. Repeated observations of lakes in the Ksudach calderas (Kamchatka) and on Simushir Island indicate approximate rates of level changes: a decrease ranging within 0.5–0.6 m per year (over a 27-year observation interval) and an increase reaching up to 0.26 m per year (over a 48-year interval). The growth rate of the underwater extrusive dome in Lake Shtyubel has averaged 1–1.6 m per year over the past 25 years. This analysis has facilitated the first generalization regarding the morphology and developmental features of crater and caldera lakes in the Kuril-Kamchatka region of Russia, representing an important step in their study. We reassessed several orbital topographic data sets for the Perseverance rover landing site at Jezero Crater, Mars to better understand its floor units. Tens‐of‐meters deep topographic anomalies occur in the volcanic floor of Jezero crater and are not a result of impact cratering. Eight km‐scale steep escarpment‐bounded depressions may be locations of paleotopographic highs that were embayed by the volcanic floor lava flows, forming inverted topography from either contemporaneous upward inflation of embaying lavas or later deep scour due to differential erosion over 107−9 years. Five multi km‐scale shallow‐sloped depressions linked by channel‐like forms may record locations of buried paleolakes and channels that predate the volcanic floor units or a drained magma system. These results indicate Jezero experienced multiple closed‐basin or dry phases, allowing erosion of the crater floor and creation of topography, which provides new geologic context for the samples gathered by Perseverance. Plain Language Summary: The Perseverance rover has been on Mars in Jezero Crater for over 2 years collecting rock samples. We reexamined elevation data to better understand the volcanic lava unit on the floor of the crater. We found that the floor is slightly tilted south‐southeast, possibly due to sediment, sourced from the north, beneath the volcanic floor. In the floor we found eight depressions bounded by cliffs, possibly formed by past lava flows around hills of weaker rocks that are now eroded away or by the lavas rising upward around the hills of rock. We also found five large, shallow depressions connected by channels. These might indicate old locations of lakes and rivers before the more recent volcanic activity or a drained magma system. This suggests Jezero Crater experienced alternating phases of being dry and being filled with water, providing key information to help interpret the collected samples. Magmatism in the Quaternary Clear Lake volcanic field (CLVF), with its youngest eruption having only occurred c. 10 ka ago, is commonly invoked as the heat source for the world's largest commercial geothermal reservoir, The Geysers, in northern California. A shallow silicic magma reservoir in the upper-middle crust has been discovered for some time, but the location and mechanism of a potential deep mafic magma reservoir have remained elusive. Here, we present a seismic tomographic model that images the entire crustal column, clearly revealing a multilevel transcrustal magmatic system beneath the Geysers-Clear Lake area. Upwelling melts from the mantle traverse across the crust-mantle boundary and accumulate in the lower crust underneath the southeastern part of Clear Lake, resulting in a hot Moho in between. Mafic melts primarily ascend westward due to the extensional regime in the west and physical barrier effect from the overlying rigid ophiolite fragment, ultimately forming a shallow silicic magma reservoir underlying and heating The Geysers geothermal field. The documentation and understanding of variations in the Earth's magnetic field through time is fundamental for several disciplines, but current geomagnetic models rely on datasets heavily biased toward the mid‐ and high northern latitudes. The African continent and surrounding islands and oceans are particularly underrepresented. Here, we present a new record of paleo‐secular variation (PSV) of the inclinations over the last 23 ka from Lake Chala, situated at 3°S near Mt Kilimanjaro in eastern equatorial Africa. This groundwater‐fed crater lake is characterized by a high sedimentation rate (ca. 1 cm/10 years) and a particularly well‐constrained age model based on 210Pb and 14C dating. The magnetic mineralogy of the sediments is tested with rock magnetic analyses. The Lake Chala inclination record shows four highs and lows over 20 ka and compares well with that of Lake Malawi (10°S) between 20 and 16.2 ka, and from 9.8 to 2.6 ka. This record is linked to PSV records at Lakes Victoria and Malawi using a sequence slotting technique to generate a composite PSV model for east Africa. Analyzed at best‐possible resolutions up to 200 years, the Lake Chala PSV record not only represents an important contribution to improve our understanding of local and global features of the Earth's magnetic field. It also expands the utility of paleomagnetism as a key tool for dating and correlation both for archeological sites throughout East Africa and the many volcanoes, active or dormant, of the East African Rift System. Less than a year after the 2018 Kīlauea caldera collapse and eruption, water appeared in newly deepened Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The lake—unprecedented in the written record—grew to a depth of ∼50 m before lava from the December 2020 eruption boiled it away. Surface water heightened concerns of potential phreatic or phreatomagmatic explosions but also offered a new means of possibly identifying eruption precursors. The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) monitored the lake via direct visual observation, webcams, thermal imaging, colorimetry, and laser rangefinders. HVO also employed uncrewed aircraft systems to sample the water and measure near‐lake gas composition. The lake's δD and δ18O indicate a groundwater source with substantial evaporation. The initial sample had a salinity (total dissolved solids concentration) of 71,000 mg/L and was rich in sulfate (∼53,000 mg/L), iron (∼500 mg/L), and magnesium (∼10,000 mg/L). Subsequent samples were slightly more dilute. The water's pH (∼4), δ34S (+4.3‰), and surface temperatures (up to 85°C) suggest, rather than significant scrubbing of magmatic volatiles, leaching of basalt and reactions with sulfate minerals resulted in high concentrations of sulfate and other solutes. Thermodynamic modeling and precipitate mineralogy indicate that water composition was controlled by iron oxidation and sulfate dissolution. Although the lake exhibited no detectable precursors before the next eruption, and phreatic or phreatomagmatic explosions did not materialize, our multi‐parameter approach to monitoring yielded an enhanced understanding of the hydrologic, geologic, and magmatic conditions that led to the formation of the unique and short‐lived lake. The presence of a crater lake was important, as it increased the chance of hazardous, explosive eruptions once Kīlauea resumed eruptive activity. However, the lake provided a new way to keep an eye on Kīlauea; other volcanic lakes have changed temperature, color, or chemistry, or even boiled away, before eruptions. We monitored Kīlauea's lake with various methods, including water sampling via drone. Data showed that the lake was fed by groundwater, not rainwater; the lake was acidic, but less so than most acid volcanic lakes; and the lake was not absorbing large amounts of volcanic gas directly. Instead, the lake's chemistry was controlled by reactions with rocks and sulfur‐bearing minerals in and near the crater. Ultimately, no changes to the lake were detected before the next eruption, most likely because of the nature of magma at Kīlauea, which is different from that at most volcanoes with crater lakes. The water lake also did not cause the eruption to be explosive, as lava merely flowed into the lake from above rather than being injected vigorously into the lake from beneath. Indonesia has numerous lakes; however, research on the spatiotemporal sediment quality and source identification in lakes remains limited. The overaccumulation of heavy metals and nutrients in lakes severely threatens aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to identify potential sources of metallic deposits (Cu, Pb, Cr, Fe, Al, and Cd) and nutrients (TN and TP) in lake-surface sediment, utilizing enrichment factors (EF), geoaccumulation indices (Igeo), potential ecological risk indices (Er), and risk indices (RI). Multivariate statistical analyses, including principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson's correlation analysis, were conducted to pinpoint pollution sources linked to land use. Eight sampling sites for surface sediment and water were examined in both wet and dry seasons at Menjer Lake, chosen for its diverse applications in tourism, hydropower, floating net cages, and extensive agriculture in its catchment. Correlation and PCA results indicated that Pb, Fe, and Al mainly originate from tourism, while Al, Fe, TN, and TP are associated with agriculture. The highest average loading from land use was observed in agriculture (> 0.8), floating net cages (> 0.76), and tourism (> 0.68). Furthermore, the highest loading from nutrients and all metals were TP (> 0.71) and all metals (> 0.35), respectively. Ecological risk assessment revealed low to moderately polluted EFs and Igeo in the dry season. However, Menjer Lake's Er and RI for heavy metals were generally classified as unpolluted. To better understand how global and regional-scale climate has changed, high- resolution records for environmental changes are still needed in southwestern (SW) China during the Late Holocene epoch. This study presents a well-dated high-resolution diatom analysis from a 1.66-m-long sediment core taken from Lake Cuogeda (CGD) on the southeast (SE) edge of the Tibetan Plateau to document environmental changes over the past -4000 years. Diatom and other geochemical proxies show that, from 3850 to 3430 calyr BP (before present, 0 BP=1950 AD, 1900 to 1480 BC), the environment of Lake CGD is acidic, oligotrophic, and enriched with humic acids. And the lake ice cover duration is short during this period. During 3430-1550 cal yr BP (1480 BC-400 AD), Lake CGD has less humic acid and a relatively high pH environment. The ice cover duration is longer, and the temperature drops during this period. Our multi- indicator recorded two environment fluctuations at -2800 calyr BP (850 BC) and 2210-1950 cal yr BP (260 BC-0 AD). From 1550 to 3.6 cal yr BP (400-1946 AD), the lake ecosystem changed to a higher pH condition and had a prolonged freezing time. From 3.6 cal yr BP (1946 AD) to the present, Lake CGD's water was acidic, with an environment of shorter duration of ice cover and stronger lake water turbulence. Comparisons between the CGD records and other climate reconstructions underscore the relevance of the CGD record for regional and global environments. Comparisons indicate that the environment evolution pattern of SW China during the Late Holocene was greatly affected by solar radiation and North Atlantic sea surface temperature. Three-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling for small, stratified tropical lakes in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia in general is not deeply explored. This study pioneers investigating the hydrodynamics of a small crater lake in the Philippines with a focus on temperature simulation using a Fantom Refined 3D model that has been tested mostly for temperate and sub-tropical lakes. The lake's monthly temperature during the dry season served as a reference for the model's initial condition and validation. For the simulation to proceed, input data such as weather, inflow, and bathymetry were prepared. In the absence of hourly meteorological data from local weather stations, this paper adopted the satellite weather data from Solcast. Simple correlation analysis of daily weather data between local stations and Solcast showed valid and acceptable results. Inflow values were estimated using the rational method while the stream temperature was estimated from a regression equation using air temperatures as input. The validated satellite-derived data and runoff model can therefore be employed for 3D modeling. The simulations resulted in extremely higher temperatures compared with those observed when using previous default model settings. Direct modifications were then applied to weather parameters, compromising their integrity but resulting in reasonable profiles. By adding scaling factors to heat flux equations and multiplying their components by 0.75 (shortwave), 1.35 (longwave), 0.935 (air temperature), and 0.80 (wind), better results were achieved. This study identifies several challenges in performing 3D hydrodynamic modeling, such as paucity in input hydro-meteorologic and limnologic data and the need for heat flux model improvement. Overall, this study was successful in employing 3D hydrodynamic modeling in a tropical lake, which can pave directions and serve as an excellent reference for future modeling in the same region. Members of the genus Methylacidiphilum are thermoacidophile methanotrophs with optimal growth temperatures between 50°C and 60°C, and pH between 1.0 and 3.0. These microorganisms, as well as other extremophile bacteria, offer an attractive platform for environmental and industrial biotechnology because of their robust operating conditions and capacity to grow using low-cost substrates. In this study, we isolated Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum str. Pic from a crater lake located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. We sequenced the genome and built a genome-scale metabolic model. The manually curated model contains 667 metabolites, 729 reactions, and 473 genes. Predicted flux distributions using flux balance analysis identified changes in redox trade-offs under methanotrophic and autotrophic conditions (H2+CO2). This was also predicted under heterotrophic conditions (acetone, isopropanol, and propane). Model validation was performed by testing the capacity of the strains to grow using four substrates: CH4, acetone, isopropanol, and LP-Gas. The results suggest that the metabolism of M. fumariolicum str. Pic is limited by the regeneration of redox equivalents such as NAD(P)H and reduced cytochromes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Big Soda Lake, Nevada, is a multi‐extreme meromictic lake, whose hypersaline hyperalkaline bottom waters feature permanent anoxia and high concentrations of arsenic, sulphide and ammonia. These properties make Big Soda Lake—and the adjacent Little Soda Lake—a fascinating system for exploring life's boundaries, discovering novel microbial taxa and identifying biotechnologically useful strains. To date, the taxonomic diversity and metabolic capabilities of microorganisms in this system remain largely unknown. Here, we fill this gap using microbiome surveys across the Big and Little Soda Lake water columns, including 16S rRNA sequencing, fungal ITS2 sequencing and gene‐ and genome‐resolved metagenomics. We accompany these surveys with measurements of salinity, pH, temperature, oxygen, ammonium and ammonia concentrations. Our analyses reveal rich bacterial communities, taxonomically and functionally differentiated along Big Soda Lake's oxycline and, to lesser extent, between lakes. Fungal communities were dominated by a small number of families, while nearly no archaea were detected. Pathways related to perchlorate reduction, anoxygenic phototrophy, fermentation, dissimilatory metabolism of arsenite/arsenate, sulphur compounds, nitrogen compounds and hydrogen, were particularly prevalent. A total of 129 high‐quality bacterial and archaeal metagenome‐assembled genomes (completeness ≥ 80%, contamination ≤ 5%) were recovered, yielding insight into the taxonomic distribution of microbial metabolic pathways. This study was carried out in the Foumbot-Kouomboum region (Noun Plain, Cameroon Volcanic Line), with the main objective of presenting (i) the geomorphological characteristics of the volcanic landforms and (ii) the inventory and evaluation of the main geomorphosites in the Foumbot-Kouomboum region. All the geomorphosites selected in this study are of volcanic origin and include four crater lakes (Monoun Lake, Mfouet Lake, Negop-Ghang Lake, Ngouondam Lake) and four Strombolian cones (Mfomben, Chapchap, Makwet, North-Njitande). Most of these volcanic geomorphosites are accessible and have volcanic features that highlight the geological significance of this region, warranting national and international recognition. These volcanic landscapes have relatively high scientific and additional values. The integrity of many of the selected geomorphosites is preserved and they are representative of the regional geomorphology. Some artisanal and industrial quarries, as well as agro-pastoral activities, tend to degrade certain geomorphosites that currently lack legal protection. The results of the inventory and evaluation of the selected geomorphosites show that they have enormous geotourism, educational and cultural potential that can be studied in depth with the aim of creating an UNESCO Global Geopark. Therefore, it is highly recommended to implement geoconservation policies for these geomorphosites. This will help to safeguard and enhance the natural beauty and unique volcanic landscapes they possess.

The Lake Tana area is located within a complex volcano-tectonic basin on the northwestern Ethiopian plateau. The basin is underlain by a thick succession of Oligocene transitional basalts and sub-alkaline rhyolites overlain in places, particularly south of the lake, by Quaternary alkaline to mildly transitional basalts, and dotted with Oligo-Miocene trachyte domes and plugs. This paper presents the results of integrated field, petrographic, and major and trace element geochemical studies of the Lake Tana area volcanic rocks, with particular emphasis on the Oligocene basalts and rhyolites. The studies reveal a clear petrogenetic link between the Oligocene basalts and rhyolites. The Oligocene basalts are: (1) plagioclase, olivine, and/or pyroxene phyric; (2) show an overall decreasing trend in MgO, Fe2O3, and CaO with silica; (3) have relatively low Mg#, Ni and Cr contents and high Nb/La and Nb/Yb ratios; and (4) show LREE enriched and generally flat HREE patterns. All these imply the origin of the Oligocene basalts by shallow-level fractional crystallization of an enriched magma sourced at the asthenospheric mantle. The Oligocene rhyolites: (1) are enriched in incompatible while depleted in compatible trace elements, P and Ti; (2) show a strong negative Eu anomaly; (3) contain appreciable amounts of plagioclase, apatite, and Fe-Ti oxides; and (4) show clear geochemical similarity with well-constrained rhyolites from the Large Igneous Province (LIP) of the northwestern Ethiopian plateau. Low-pressure fractional crystallization of mantle-derived basaltic magma in crustal magma chambers explains the origin of these rhyolites. Our study further shows that the Oligocene basalts and rhyolites are co-genetic and the felsic rocks of the Lake Tana area are related differentiates of the flood basalt volcanism in the northwestern Ethiopian plateau. The temperature evolution during the Holocene shows conflicting patterns and yields the controversy regarding whether the Holocene followed a warming or cooling trend. Resolving this controversy is critical for understanding the underlying mechanisms of climate change and evaluating global warming on a longer timescale. Here we present a quantitative summer temperature reconstruction based on branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers analyzed from a sedimentary sequence retrieved from the volcanic lake Kielguo crater lake in Northeast (NE) China. Our record revealed that the summer temperature in NE China followed a rough cooling trend during ~10–2.2 cal ka BP and increased after ~2.2 cal ka BP. The warmest period appeared at ~10–8.8 cal ka BP with ~15.8°C, and the coldest time occurred at ~2.3 cal ka BP with ~13.4°C. Compared with other temperature records from NE China, we conclude that the summer and winter temperature change trends in NE China were probably controlled by the summer and winter insolation respectively, and the ice volume. The mean annual temperature changes in NE China resulted from the superposition of summer cooling and winter warming during the Holocene, and the decrease in ice volume forcing the increase in mean annual temperatures before ~7–6 cal ka BP. In impact crater lakes, the lacustrine sedimentary records may not solely reflect climatic changes but also potential erosional effects from lithologically distinct impactite formations. The hydrochemical and biogeochemical processes during the deposition of the Nördlinger Ries impact crater lake, which fall in the range of the mid-Miocene Climate Transition, were studied by analysing microcrystalline authigenic carbonates in a drill core succession, using stable oxygen and carbon isotopes in conjunction with biomarkers. These investigations revealed an early sulfidic interval characterized by thiophenes, iso- and anteiso-C 15:0 acids derived from sulfate reducing bacteria, and dolomites with low to intermediate δ13C carb values. The subsequent distinctive interval is characterized by extremely 13C-enriched dolomite (δ13C carb up to +20.93 ± 0.05‰ V-PDB), decline of iso- and anteiso-C 15:0 acids and is rich in an Archaea-derived archaeol that is 13C-enriched (−14.7‰), indicating extensive methanogenesis in sulfate-depleted lake porewater during early diagenesis. The sulfate decline results from successive sulfate reduction when replenishment by sulfate-bearing inflow water is limited. The carbonates exhibit enriched 18O due to pronounced evaporation in a long-resided water body and enriched 13C by methanogenesis. A change in provenance of water derived from the sulfur-rich suevite (impact melt-bearing breccia) and crystalline source rocks to the sulfur-poor Bunte Breccia (continuous ejecta blanket) is required. Intermittently high Si/Al and Zr/Al at the high δ13C interval suggests sporadic short-term runoff increase, leading to fluctuating physiochemical lake conditions. A subsequent decline in both δ13C carb and archaeol indicates a decreasing lake level with intermittent subaerial exposure events, supported by bioturbation and mud cracks. The concomitant lake oxygenation is well supported by increasing Pr/Ph ratios and lipids derived from aerobic methanotrophs (13C-depleted 3-methyl-hopanoids). In the youngest unit, allochthonous lignites and biomarkers from lacustrine/soil sources appear, high total sulphur contents and thiophenes recur, and stable C and O isotope values decrease again. These observations suggest another major provenance change of the inflowing solutes, with increasing influx from weathered pyrite-bearing Jurassic claystones. These findings demonstrate that the climatic record expected from the stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of the Ries carbonates is strongly overprinted by hydrochemical and biogeochemical processes due to changing ion influx from substrate rocks, along the course of the successive ejecta erosion and catchment changes. Such an intrinsic control of lacustrine biogeochemical processes is also expected for other hydrologically closed impact crater lake basins, where catchment rocks with distinctively different lithologies are present. Lake Avernus is a volcanic lake located in southern Italy. Since ancient times, it has inspired numerous myths and legends due to the occurrence of singular phenomena, such as coloring events. Only recently has an explanation been found for them, i.e., the recurring color change over time is due to the alternation of cyanobacterial blooms that are a consequence of natural nutrient inputs as well as pollution resulting from human activities. This current report specifically describes the red coloring event that occurred on Lake Avernus in March 2022, the springtime season in this region of Italy. Our innovative multidisciplinary approach, the 'Fast Detection Strategy' (FDS), was devised to monitor cyanobacterial blooms and their toxins. It integrates remote sensing data from satellites and drones, on-site sampling, and analytical/bioinformatics analyses into a cohesive information flow. Thanks to FDS, we determined that the red color was attributable to a bloom of Planktothrix rubescens, a toxin-producing cyanobacterium. Here, we report the detection and identification of 14 anabenopeptins from this P. rubescens strain, seven of which are known and seven are newly reported herein. Moreover, we explored the mechanisms and causes behind this cyclic phenomenon, confirming cyanobacteria's role as reliable indicators of environmental changes. This investigation further validates FDS's effectiveness in detecting and characterizing cyanobacterial blooms and their associated toxins, expanding its potential applications. Background: Isabel Island is a Mexican volcanic island primarily composed of basaltic stones. It features a maar known as Laguna Fragatas, which is classified as a meromictic thalassohaline lake. The constant deposition of guano in this maar results in increased levels of phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon. The aim of this study was to utilize high-quality genomes from the genus Halomonas found in specialized databases as a reference for genome mining of moderately halophilic bacteria isolated from Laguna Fragatas. This research involved genomic comparisons employing phylogenetic, pangenomic, and metabolic-inference approaches. Results: The Halomonas genus exhibited a large open pangenome, but several genes associated with salt metabolism and homeostatic regulation (ectABC and betABC), nitrogen intake through nitrate and nitrite transporters (nasA, and narGI), and phosphorus uptake (pstABCS) were shared among the Halomonas isolates. Conclusions: The isolated bacteria demonstrate consistent adaptation to high salt concentrations, and their nitrogen and phosphorus uptake mechanisms are highly optimized. This optimization is expected in an extremophile environment characterized by minimal disturbances or abrupt seasonal variations. The primary significance of this study lies in the dearth of genomic information available for this saline and low-disturbance environment. This makes it important for ecosystem conservation and enabling an exploration of its biotechnological potential. Additionally, the study presents the first two draft genomes of H. janggokensis. Some biological invasions can result in algae blooms in the nearshore of clear lakes. We studied if an invasive crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) modified the biomass and community composition of benthic macroinvertebrates and therefore led to a trophic cascade resulting in increased periphyton biomass, elevated littoral primary productivity, and benthic algae bloom in a lake with remarkable transparency [Crater Lake, Oregon, USA]. After quantifying the changes in the spatial distribution of invasive crayfish over a 13-year period, we compared biomass and community composition of littoral–benthic macroinvertebrates, periphyton biovolume, community composition, nutrient limitation, and the development of benthic algae bloom in locations with high and low crayfish density. In addition, we determined if the alteration in community structure resulted in directional changes to gross primary production and ecosystem respiration. The extent of crayfish distribution along the shoreline of Crater Lake doubled over a 13-year period, leaving less than 20% of the shoreline free from crayfish. At high crayfish density sites, benthic macroinvertebrate biomass was 99% lower, and taxa richness was 50% lower than at low crayfish areas. High crayfish sites show tenfold greater periphyton biovolume, sixfold higher periphyton biomass (chlorophyll a), twofold higher metabolic productivity, and the presence of large filamentous algae (Cladophora sp.). The invasion of crayfish had negative consequences for a lake protected under the management of the USA National Park Service, with direct impacts on many levels of ecological organization. Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) has proven to be a useful tool for palaeoenvironmental studies, but only a handful of studies exist so far for tropical regions. In this study we used sedaDNA to study the temporal succession of Brachionus spp. rotifer mitochondrial DNA haplotypes using two sediment cores from two climatically different alkaline‐saline crater lakes from the Kenyan Rift Valley.Data were retrieved from a sediment core (dating back to AD 1800) from Lake Kageinya, located in the remote, hot and hyper‐arid Suguta Valley. sedaDNA was used to study the temporal succession of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of Brachionus spp. rotifers. The results were compared to previously published data from Lake Sonachi, a well‐studied lake in the humid and colder mountainous region of Kenya near the town of Naivasha, now supported by a 210Pb age chronology.Both records extend back before the onset of substantial anthropogenic impact in these regions. The results revealed that climate—rather than anthropogenic impact—was most strongly correlated with haplotype changes in both lakes. During prolonged dry periods (such as from AD 1910 to the late AD 1960s), certain haplotypes persisted. Sudden changes and the emergence of alter native haplotypes were observed when climate became more humid or during episodes of highly variable climate (before AD 1910 and from AD 1960s onwards).Progressive changes in prevailing haplotypes during periods with variable climate could reflect local adaptation and/or be the result of immigration of new haplotypes after the eradication of previous populations during extreme environmental conditions (high temperatures, UV irradiation, pH and salinity).The results indicate that, despite adverse chemical conditions, sedaDNA in tropical lake sediments is preserved for at least a few hundred years. Therefore, its analysis provides a useful complementary palaeoenvironmental proxy for palaeolimnological reconstructions and novel insights on changes in rotifer populations through time. In a recent paper, Rogozin and coauthors present a morphologic/seismostratigraphic study of two small lakes, Lake Zapovednoye (LZ) and Lake Peyungda (LP), located 50‒60 km east from the alleged epicenter of the 1908 Tunguska Event (TE), a large explosion believed to have been caused by an extraterrestrial impact. Data presented in that paper suggest a similar (although not specified) origin of these two lakes and Lake Cheko, located close to the TE epicenter. This led Rogozin et al., to question the impact crater origin of Lake Cheko, whose depression was interpreted by Gasperini et al., as caused by the freefall of an extraterrestrial fragment, which survived an atmospheric explosion. We analyze Rogozin et al., data, focusing on similarities and differences between Lake Cheko, LZ and LP, to determine whether their findings are relevant to the TE problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geographic access to isolated ecosystems is an important catalyst of adaptive radiation. Cichlid fishes repeatedly colonized rift, crater, and volcanic lakes from surrounding rivers. We test the "lake effect" on the phenotypic rate and state across 253 cichlid species. The rate of evolution was consistently higher (*10-fold) in lakes, and consistent across different dimensions of the phenotype. Rate shifts tended to occur coincident with or immediately following river-to-lake transitions, generally resulting in 2- to 5-fold faster rates than in the founding riverine lineage. By contrast, river- and lake-dwelling cichlids exhibit considerable overlap in phenotypes, generally with less disparity in lakes, but often different evolutionary optima. Taken together, these results suggest that lake radiations rapidly expand into niches largely already represented by ancestral riverine lineages, albeit in different frequencies. Lakes may provide ecological opportunity via ecological release (e.g., from predators/competitors) but need not be coupled with access to novel ecological niches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lake Toba, the largest lake in Sumatra Island, is a volcanic lake that holds great significance both geologically and culturally. It has a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors from around the world. The fluctuation of surface levels in Lake Toba adds another layer of complexity to the stability of its sublake slopes during seismic activity. The key aim of this paper is to study the sublake slope stability, likelihood of liquefaction potential, and permanent deformation that subject to the fluctuation of Lake Toba surface levels. This research was conducted the numerical analysis of GeoStudio 2022.1 software by combining QUAKE/W, SLOPE/W, and SIGMA/W to evaluate the pre- and post-earthquake condition. The slope stability in the pre-earthquake condition was stable regardless of the reduced safety factor along with the declining lake surface level, but in the post-earthquake condition the safety factor was reduced nearly 60%, resulting in slope instability. An earthquake exhibits 0.25 g of acceleration within a period of 44.435 s, caused liquefaction up to 7.7 m layer of soil structure and high amplification of the ground surface approximately to 0.44 g. Massive permanent deformation occurred as the result were varying from 7 m to 12.1 m. As the surface level decreases, potential for liquefaction decreases as well but the safety factor value of slope stability increases, which can lead to a greater increase in the potential for permanent deformation. Freshwater fishes abound in Indonesia. They are everywhere in the archipelago--from rice fields and irrigation canals to brackish lagoons and highland rivers. They even populate the most unassuming bodies of water. Some species are found in the remotest of volcanic lakes while others call the blackest and most acidic peat swamps their home. Every island has its habitats and every habitat has its fishes, making Indonesia one of the world's richest centers of ichthyofauna diversity. And yet, thinking with freshwater fishes--and their biodiversity history--has been largely absent from the field of Indonesian studies. A telling example of this biological blindspot can be found in the ways in which the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project (CMIP) has produced--and continues to constitute--Indonesia as an area of study and attachment. In CMIP's Producing Indonesia: The State of the Field of Indonesian Studies, a landmark volume published in 2014, there were twenty-seven contributions that spanned the humanities and social sciences but none that looked at the role local scientists played in knowing the archipelago's freshwater fauna or even broader the interplay between environment and society in shaping the study of modern Indonesia. In response, this essay centers the interplay between environment and society to show how it can open up new directions for future research and interdisciplinary collaboration. In doing so, and in particular, the paper argues that the story of fish and freshwater illustrates the promise of biodiversity history for the field of Indonesian studies in the age of environmental humanities and beyond. High-resolution paleoclimate records from tropical continental settings are greatly needed to advance understanding of global climate dynamics. The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project DeepCHALLA recovered a 214.8-meter long sediment sequence from Lake Chala, a deep and permanently stratified (meromictic) crater lake in equatorial East Africa, covering the past c. 250,000 years (250 kyr) of continuous lacustrine deposition since the earliest phase of lake-basin development. Lipid biomarker analyses on the sediments of this long-lived lake can provide much-needed records of past climate variability from this currently poorly documented region. However, the degree to which climate proxies derived from aquatically produced biomarkers are affected by aspects of lake developmental history is rarely considered, even though it may critically influence their ability to consistently register a particular climate variable through time. Modern-system studies in Lake Chala revealed crucial information about the mechanisms underpinning relationships between proxies based on isoprenoid (iso-) and branched (br-) glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) and the targeted climate variables, but the persistence of these relationships in the past remains unclear. To assess the reliability of long-term climate signals registered in the sediments of Lake Chala, we compared downcore variations in GDGT distributions with major phases in lake-system evolution as indicated by independent proxies of lake depth, mixing regime and nutrient dynamics: seismic reflection data, lithology and fossil diatom assemblages. Together, these records suggest that during early lake history (before c. 180–200 ka) the distinct mixing-related depth zones with which specific GDGT producers are associated in the modern-day lake were not yet formed, likely due to more open lake hydrology and absence of chemical water-column stratification. Consequently during this early phase the absolute GDGT concentrations are relatively low, proxies sensitive to water-column stratification (e.g., BIT index) display highly irregular temporal variability, and correlations between proxies are dissimilar to expectations based on modern-system understanding. A sequence of lake-system changes between c. 180–200 ka and c. 80 ka first established and then strengthened the chemical density gradient, promoting meromictic conditions despite the overall decrease in lake depth due to sediment accumulation. From c. 180 ka onward some GDGTs and derived proxies (e.g., crenarchaeol concentration, BIT index and IR6Me display strong ~23-kyr periodicity, likely reflecting the predominantly precession-driven insolation forcing of Quaternary climate variability in low-latitude regions. Our results suggest that GDGT-based temperature and moisture-balance proxies in Lake Chala sediments reflect the climate history of eastern equatorial Africa from at least c. 160 ka onwards, i.e., covering the complete last glacial-interglacial cycle and the penultimate glacial maximum. This work confirms the potential of lacustrine GDGTs for elucidating the climate history of tropical regions at Quaternary timescales, provided they are applied to suitably high-quality sediment archives.
