Abstract

The Future Conversations workshop at CHIIR’21 looked to the future of search, recommendation, and information interaction to ask: where are the opportunities for conversational interactions? What do we need to do to get there? Furthermore, who stands to benefit? The workshop was hands-on and interactive. Rather than a series of technical talks, we solicited position statements on opportunities, problems, and solutions in conversational search in all modalities (written, spoken, or multimodal). This paper –co-authored by the organisers and participants of the workshop– summarises the submitted statements and the discussions we had during the two sessions of the workshop. Abstract

The purpose of the Strategic Workshop in Information Retrieval in Lorne is to explore the long-range issues of the Information Retrieval field, to recognize challenges that are on - or even over - the horizon, to build consensus on some of the key challenges, and to disseminate the resulting information to the research community. The intent is that this description of open problems will help to inspire researchers and graduate students to address the questions, and will provide funding agencies data to focus and coordinate support for information retrieval research.

Abstract

A lot of the world's knowledge is stored in books, which, as a result of recent mass-digitisation efforts, are increasingly available online. Search engines, such as Google Books, provide mechanisms for searchers to enter this vast knowledge space using queries as entry points. In this paper, we view Wikipedia as a summary of this world knowledge and aim to use this resource to guide users to relevant books. Thus, we investigate possible ways of using Wikipedia as an intermediary between the user's query and a collection of books being searched. We experiment with traditional query expansion techniques, exploiting Wikipedia articles as rich sources of information that can augment the user's query. We then propose a novel approach based on link distance in an extended Wikipedia graph: we associate books with Wikipedia pages that cite these books and use the link distance between these nodes and the pages that match the user query as an estimation of a book's relevance to the query. Our results show that a) classical query expansion using terms extracted from query pages leads to increased precision, and b) link distance between query and book pages in Wikipedia provides a good indicator of relevance that can boost the retrieval score of relevant books in the result ranking of a book search engine.

8. The CSIRO enterprise search test collection

Abstract

This article describes a new TREC Enterprise Track search test collection -- CERC. The collection is designed to represent some real-world search activity within the enterprise, using as a specific example the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It has a deep crawl of CSIRO's public-facing information, that is very similar to the crawl of a real-world search service provided by CSIRO. The search tasks are based on the activities of CSIRO Science Communicators, who are CSIRO employees that deal with public-facing information. Topics and judgments are tied to the Science Communicators in various ways, for example by involving them in the topic development process. The overall approach is to enhance the validity of the test collection as a model of enterprise search, by tying it to real-world examples.
