Objective: The aim of this study was to further guide the diagnosis and treatment programs for clinical facial contouring with injectable fillers by studying the facial contour parameters and proportion preferences consistent with Asian aesthetics. Methods: A total of 89 subjects (42 males and 47 females aged 20–60 years) who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. The subjects were grouped by age, sex, and external contour attractiveness score, and the external contour aesthetic parameters and proportions of the subjects in different groups were measured and analysed. Results: The upper facial breadth and lower facial breadth decreased with age, with significant differences between the 50–60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.01). The nasomental angle showed a decreasing trend with age, with significant differences between the 40–49-year age group and the 20–29-year and 30–39-year age groups (P < 0.05). Males and females were significantly different in calva height, total head height, lower facial height, and calva height to total head height ratio (P < 0.05). With increasing age, the external contour attractiveness scores of males and females both showed decreasing trends, with significant differences between the 50–60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The calva height and the cranioauricular angle have a significant impact on external contour attractiveness. In general, temporal depression, cheek sagging, lateral cheek depression, and an ill-defined mandibular border will occur due to ageing, collagen loss, ligament laxity and sagging, and soft tissue atrophy and sagging, reducing the attractiveness of the external contour. Craniofacial anthropometry is important for identity, diagnosis of congenital anomalies etc. The incidence of craniofacial abnormalities is high in the Southeast Asian region. The population of Meghalaya differs in features from other states of Northeast India and the neighbouring East Asia. The objective was to study the craniofacial anthropometric features of the ethnic adults in the Meghalaya state of Northeast India. This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in the ENT OPD. OPD patients of Meghalayan ethnicity were included in the study. Head length (HL), head breadth (HB), Cephalic index (CI), intercanthal distance (ICD), lateral canthal distance (LCD) and ear length (EL) were measured. A total of 104 adults were included. The majority of the individuals belonged to the Khasi community 51 (49%) followed by the Garo community 27 (26%) and the Jaintia community 26 (25%). The mean ± S.D age of the total sample population was 29.5 ± 8.4 years. The mean CI of the total sample population was 79.13 (mesocephalic). No statistically significant difference was noted between male-female CI in the total and subpopulation groups. In our study, the common head types were dolichocephalic (29%), brachycephalic (29%), mesocephalic (21%), hyperbrachycephalic (16%) and ultrabrachycephalic (5%). A statistically significant difference was noted between Khasi and Jaintia in HL, HW, CI, LCD; between Khasi and Garo in HL, ICD, LCD and between Garo and Jaintia in HW, CI, ICD. We believe our conventional craniofacial anthropometry data could add to the pool of regional anthropometry data and be used for future scientific purposes like anthropology, maxillofacial surgeries, designing helmets, forensic analysis, and gender differentiation. Objective:To determine the normative values of interpupillary distance (IPD), intercanthal distance (ICD), outer canthal distance (OCD), and palpebral fissure length (PFL) among a sample of Filipino adults. Methods: Design: Cross-Sectional Study Setting: Tertiary Government Training Hospital Participants: 300 Filipino hospital employees aged 19 to 65 years old Results: Out of 300 participants, 156 (52%) were men and 144 (48%) were women. The mean IPD was significantly different t(296) = 12.89, p = .00001 between males (62.59mm; SD 1.65) and females (60.29mm; SD 2.07). The mean ICD was significantly higher among males (34.91mm; SD = 1.37) than females (31.19mm; SD = 1.52); t(288) = 9.58, p = .00001. Men had a significantly higher mean OCD (93.05mm; SD 4.14) than women (91.31mm; SD = 3.97); t(298) = 3.73, p = .0002. The PFL was significantly broader among men (32.60mm; SD = 1.25) than women (31.05mm; SD = 0.99);t(291), = 11.96, p = .00001. Composite 3D face comparisons revealed prominent vertical and anteroposterior growth trends in the lower and upper facial regions. Conclusion This study presents a longitudinal 3D control dataset of the same group of children over a 6-year period that can serve as reference norms for facial growth values and trends in children aged 6–11 years. The composite 3D normative faces are available for clinical and research purposes upon request, which may be interrogated and measured according to user need and preference.

Abstract Background There is no normative craniofacial anthropometric data for the Kenyan-African population. The purpose of this investigation was to determine normative anthropometric craniofacial measurements and proportional relationships for Kenyans of African descent and to compare the data with African Americans (AA), North American Whites (NAW), and neoclassical canons. Methods Twenty-five direct facial anthropometric measurements, and 4 angular measurements, were taken on 72 Kenyan-African participants (age range 18–30 years) recruited at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. The data were compared with AA and NAW populations, and neoclassical canons. Descriptive statistics of the variables were computed for the study population. Results Significant differences between both Kenyan males and females were detected in forehead height (~ 5 mm greater for males, ~ 4.5 mm for females), nasal height (reduced by ~ 4 mm in males, ~ 3 mm in females), nasal width (8–9 mm greater), upper lip height (> 3 mm), and eye width (greater by ~ 3 mm) compared to NAW subjects. All vertical measurements obtained were significantly different compared with NAW. Differences were observed in comparison with AA subjects, but less marked. Mouth width was similar in all groups. Angular measurements were variable. Neoclassical canons did not apply to the Kenyan population. Conclusions Anthropometric measurements of NAW showed clear differences when compared with the Kenyan population, and variations exist with comparative AA data. The anthropometric data in terms of linear measurements, angular measurements, and proportional values described may serve as a database for facial analysis in the Kenyan-African population.

Objectives. This study examines the anthropometric characteristics of the cranial series from the necropolis around the “40 Holy Martyrs” that dates back in the second half of the 13th -14th c. AD, revealing new data about the population of the capital of the second Bulgarian Kingdom. Material and methods. Determination of the morphological characteristics of the studied population was based on craniofacial anthropometry. The measurements were performed using the standard spreading caliper with scale. The analysis is concentrated on the male series. Results and conclusion. Cranial index (mean value – 78.25) describes the series as mesocranial, a result supported by the distribution of its values. Brachycranial and hyperbrachycranial skulls represent 23.1 % of the studied population, while dolichocranial ones – 15.4 %. The length-height index (M = 73.1, orthocranial) presents a distribution of values with most cases included in the orthocranial rubric (76.9 %). Distribution of high breadth index and correlations with the height, from the porion show high variability. Facial profile is orthognathous (one strongly divergent skull). Faces are relatively broad, considering the mean value of the facial index (84.4, euryprosopic), but its distribution has 44.4 % euryprosopic faces, while in 22.2 % of the cases the length prevails (determining leptoprosopic faces). The use of the Virchow’s method increases the proportion of faces for which the height is predominant. The latter results are confronted with those obtained for the upper face height. Orbital index describes the series as mesoconch, nasal index divides it equally between the chamaerrhine (broad nose) and leptorrhine (narrow nose) categories. Scarce data existing for the females point to a rather homogenous structure of the series.

The objective of this study was to examine the use of metric assessment of the face and body height for age estimation of young children for legal proceedings. The sample consisted of 591 healthy children (317 boys and 274 girls) aged between 3 and 6 years from Germany, Italy and Lithuania. Multiple regression models for age estimation were developed using body height and selected craniofacial measurements and proportions. The accuracy of the models was assessed by the mean absolute error on a sample of 60 children. Sex-specific regression equations were established using five craniofacial indices (sestozyzy,zyzyeueu,tsetgn,seprnsegn,seprnsesto), associated absolute measurements, and body height. The standard deviations for a mean age estimate in a child of a given sex, body height and face dimensions ranged from 6 to 10 months. Mean absolute errors between real and estimated ages ranged from 4 to 9 months. It is concluded that facial measurements and body height may be used for age estimation in young children either as a complementary method to dental and skeletal assessment or as an alternative method for radiological evaluation when this cannot be applied due to lack of access or legislative restrictions for unaccompanied minors or adopted children [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study was done to establish the craniofacial anthropometric norms of the young adult (18- 25 years) Malaysian Indian. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of convenient samples of 100 healthy volunteers, with equal number of female and male subjects who had no history of mixed racial-parentage. Twenty-two linear measurements were taken twice from 28 landmarks over six craniofacial regions. The methodology and evaluation of indices of the craniofacial region was adapted from Hajnis et al. Results: The minimum measurements are always contributed by the female Indian except for the nose height (n-sn), (left) eye fissure length (ex-en), upper vermillion height (ls-sto), and lower vermillion height (sto-li). There is a gender difference in all the measurements except the (left) eye fissure height (independent t-test; P < 0.05). The Malaysian Indians exhibit some North American White Caucasian (NAWC) features in all regions. The cephalic index indicates a brachycephalic or relatively short wide head with a tendency towards mesocephaly. From the low nasal index, the Malaysian Indian female have a nose that is narrow or leptorrhin similar to the NAWCs. The lower value of the upper lip height to mouth width index in the Indian female indicates a relatively shorter upper lip height compared to the mouth width, also similar to the NAWC. Conclusion: This study establishes the craniofacial anthropometric norms of the Malaysian Indian over 22 parameters. Male in general has a significantly higher measurement than female. The Malaysian Indians do exhibit some NAWC features.

Background: Craniofacial growth changes in young children are not yet completely understood. Up-to-date references for craniofacial measurements are crucial for clinical assessment of orthodontic anomalies, craniofacial abnormalities and subsequent planning of interventions. Aim: To provide normal reference data and to identify growth patterns for craniofacial dimensions of European boys and girls aged 3–6 years. Subjects and methods: Using standard anthropometric methodology, body weight, body height and 23 craniofacial measurements were acquired for a cross-sectional sample of 681 healthy children (362 boys and 319 girls) aged 3–6 years from Germany, Italy and Lithuania. Descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, percentage annual changes and percentage growth rates were used to analyse the dataset. Results: Between the ages of 3–6 years, craniofacial measurements showed age- and sex-related patterns independent from patterns observed for body weight and body height. Sex-related differences were observed in the majority of craniofacial measurements. In both sexes, face heights and face depths showed the strongest correlation with age. Growth patterns differed by craniofacial measurement and can be summarised into eight distinct age- and sex-related patterns. Conclusion: This study provided reference data and identified sex- and age-related growth patterns of the craniofacial complex of young European children, which may be used for detailed assessment of normal growth in paediatrics, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery and possibly for forensic age assessment. Background: Craniofacial anthropometry provides essential data for diagnosis and treatment planning, with the norms for many races having been investigated. The results reveal that facial morphometry varies greatly because of geographical, ethnic, and racial variations. This study aims to gather the normative anthropometric data and compare the differences in facial morphometry between the Kenyan population and that of the Chinese. Methods: Four vertical measurements (trichion-nasion, nasion-subnasale, subnasale-gnathion, and superaurale-subaurale) and 6 horizontal measurements (zygion-zygion, exocanthion-endocanthion, endocanthion-endocanthion, pupil-pupil, alare-alare, and chelion-chelion) were obtained manually from subjects with no craniofacial abnormality. Results: A total of 180 participants (90 Kenyans and 90 Chinese) were included. Among the Kenyans, males generally had greater dimensions in comparison to the Kenyan females with the exception of the upper third, lower third, and intercanthal, and interpupillary distances. Among the Chinese, there was a significant difference between the 2 genders with the exception of intercanthal distance. All measurements were greater in Chinese males in comparison to the females. Comparison between races shows that Kenyans had greater vertical measurements with exception of the ear length for both genders. The Chinese males had increased facial width and intercanthal distance, while the Chinese females showed increased intercanthal distance compared to Kenyans. Kenyans exhibited hyperleptoprosopic-type face, while Chinese exhibited mesoprosopic-type face, with none of the 2 groups conforming to the neoclassical canons. We present a method for the automatic localization of facial landmarks that integrates nonrigid deformation with the ability to handle missing points. The algorithm generates sets of candidate locations from feature detectors and performs combinatorial search constrained by a flexible shape model. A key assumption of our approach is that for some landmarks there might not be an accurate candidate in the input set. This is tackled by detecting partial subsets of landmarks and inferring those that are missing, so that the probability of the flexible model is maximized. The ability of the model to work with incomplete information makes it possible to limit the number of candidates that need to be retained, drastically reducing the number of combinations to be tested with respect to the alternative of trying to always detect the complete set of landmarks. We demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method in the face recognition grand challenge database, where we obtain average errors of approximately 3.5 mm when targeting 14 prominent facial landmarks. For the majority of these our method produces the most accurate results reported to date in this database. Handling of occlusions and surfaces with missing parts is demonstrated with tests on the Bosphorus database, where we achieve an overall error of 4.81 and 4.25 mm for data with and without occlusions, respectively. To investigate potential limits in the accuracy that could be reached, we also report experiments on a database of 144 facial scans acquired in the context of clinical research, with manual annotations performed by experts, where we obtain an overall error of 2.3 mm, with averages per landmark below 3.4 mm for all 14 targeted points and within 2 mm for half of them. It was aimed to determine the change of facial asymmetry resulting from nasal septal deviation (SD) depending on age, gender, degree of deviation and the affected area besides the effect of SD on somatotype and craniofacial morphology. 171 volunteers (90 males, 81 females), 27 individuals aged 9–13, 44 individuals aged 14–18, 44 individuals aged 19–23 and 56 individuals in control group participated in the study conducted in otorhinolaryngology polyclinic.11 photometric, 16 anthropometric measurements were taken from the participants. SD affects facial asymmetry formation, although not statistically significant compared to healthy individuals asymmetry rates (p˃0.05). It was determined that the degree of SD affected asymmetry only between the ages of 14–18 (in adolescence) and the development of asymmetry in all SD patients was not statistically dependent on age and gender (p˃0.05). Photometric measurements demonstrated asymmetries in horizontally-extending parameters of 1/3 middle part of face. There was no statistically significant difference in the cranial anthropometric measurements of the upper and lower 1/3 of the face compared to the control group (p˃0.05). The order of the most asymmetrical parameters is Alare-Zygion, Alare-Subnasale, Cheilion-Gonion, Exocanthion-Cheilion, Midsagittal plane-Zygion, Zygion-Cheilion, Zygion-Gonion, Subalare-Cheilion, Glabella-Exocanthion. In all participants were determined that endomorph somatotype was dominant in female and mesomorph somatotype was dominant in male besides SD did not affect somatotype and somatotype did not alter with age. Facial landmarks detection is undoubtedly important in many applications in computer vision for example the face detection and recognition. In craniofacial anthropometry, consistent landmarks localization as per standard definition of the craniofacial anthropometry landmarks is very important in order to get accurate craniofacial anthropometry data. In this article we demonstrated an automatic detection of craniofacial anthropometry landmarks at the orbital region. 3D images of 100 respondents’ were photogaphed using Vectra-3D in controlled environment. Craniofacial measurements of 30 3D images were measured using VAM software. Two data sets of left and right eyes positive training data were created to train ‘en’ and ‘ex’ haar cascade classifiers. These classifiers were used to detect and locate the inner (en) and outer (ex) eye corners. We automatically measured the left and right eye fissures length (en-ex), the intercanthal (en-en) and the biocular (ex-ex) width. Statistical analysis was performed on the measurements taken by Vectra 3D and by our software with paired t-test and calculated the ICC indices. We observed quite amount of false positive detections. We removed the false positive and predicted the eye corners. Our classifiers able to detect and locate the ‘en’ and the ‘ex’ in 59 out of 60 test images. Our results show accurate detection of ‘ex’ and ‘en’ craniofacial landmarks as per standard definition. The paired t-test showed that all four (4) measurements are no significant difference with the p values on 95% confidence level are above 0.05. The ICC indices for the measurements were from 0.4 to 0.78. In conclusion, our trained enHaar and exHaar cascade classifiers were able to automatically detect the ‘en’ and ‘ex’ craniofacial anthropometry landmarks in controlled environment. The measurements were clinically no significant differences with the mean different were less than 1 mm in both eye fissures and intercanthal except the biocular width (1.16 mm). Background Ethnic differences in craniofacial dimensions and proportional relationships means that ethnicity-specific data is required for both diagnosis and treatment planning. This investigation establishes normative craniofacial anthropometric values for the Sudanese female (SF) population, compares with North American White (NAW) and African–American females (AA), and analyses the occurrence of neoclassical norms within the study sample. Methods Standardized frontal and profile facial photographs were taken of 100 female participants. Five vertical and five horizontal anthropometric measurements were determined. Results Significant differences were found between the 3 populations. The sample showed very poor compliance with the neoclassical norms. The upper face height of the SF was ∼20-mm taller than the AA faces ( p < 0.001). Midface, nasal and lower face heights were also significantly taller, by 15-mm, 10-mm and 10-mm respectively ( p < 0.001). SF showed significant reduction in bizygomatic width (∼30-mm), compared to NAW and AA ( p < 0.001). Eye width was ∼5-mm less than the AA sample and 3-mm less than the NAW sample ( p < 0.001). Mouth width was ∼5-mm less in SF than the other two groups ( p < 0.001). The SF exhibited a reduced interalar width compared with AA ( p < 0.001), but wider than the NAW ( p < 0.001). Conclusions The average SF face is significantly taller and narrower than the AA or NAW female face. The neoclassical proportional norms appear to be unreliable guides in relation to the SF face, and should not be used in comparative diagnosis and treatment planning. Use of the normative anthropometric data presented in this article, both linear and proportional values, should be considered in the diagnosis and treatment planning of young adult female patients of Sudanese descent. The development of an anthropometric craniofacial data base is a necessary multidisciplinary initiative, and on anthropometry of the South-Indian face is inadequate. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain average parameters that define the soft tissue facial profile of the investigated population in order to provide an important reference for community, security, social and medical applications. In this pilot study, the faces of 40 young adults were studied with standardized photography and measurements, and the data collated to determine averages for the Deccan region ethnic sub-set. The measurement of craniofacial parameters have clinical, forensic and anthropologic significance. Local data on inner canthal and outer canthal distances and the canthal index may reveal the pattern of differential growth in craniofacial features resulting from factors such as sex, diet and genetic distinctions. In the present study, we provide normative data on canthal distances in a Nigerian population which has not been studied previously, utilizing a study design which optimises the effect of age and minimise bias and confounding than previous studies in Nigerian groups. The mean inner canthal distance was 1.85±0.30cm and 2.07±0.29cm (males vs. females, p= 0.000)- mean outer canthal distance, 10.39±0.56cm and 10.40±0.98cm (males vs. female, p= 0.899). Background: Anthropometry is becoming a popular method for diagnostics of various diseases in pediatric clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the growth changes in craniofacial parameters in patients with craniosynostosis and positional plagiocephaly., Methods: Inclusion criteria for the study were presence of craniostenosis or positional plagiocephaly in a patient with at least three anthropometric evaluations at our department. Studied patients were aged from 1.0 month to 2.5 years with median age at the first and last anthropometric evaluation as 1.83 and 25.27 months, respectively. Further anthropometric results in patients older than 2.5 years were excluded from the study. Statistical significance was tested by the Mann-Whitney test., Results: The studied group consisted of 70.5% male patients. The type of craniosynostosis was represented by scaphocephaly in 44.1%, by trigonocephaly in 45.6% and by coronal craniosynostosis in 10.3% of the cases. Cranial index was proven as a suitable parameter for evaluating differences in the trend of growth in craniosynostosis (p<0.001) and also for evaluating post-operative results. Significance was found in width of the head (p=0.038) for scaphocephaly and in length of the head for trigonocephaly (p=0.001) in surgically treated patients.
