Slides from a presentation given July 28, 2023 for the Lifelong Information Literacy (LILi) Conference. Information literacy skills are critical for learners at all levels, but sometimes it can be challenging to make connections from theoretical concepts to the practical needs of students, faculty, and other learners. This session will demonstrate an activity that can be used in a variety of learning environments to show information literacy concepts in practice, with focuses on critical citation practices and open access considerations. This activity positions learners as information creators and contributors to the scholarly conversation and asks them to consider ways to make their citation and sharing practices more equitable and inclusive.

Slides from a presentation given October 18, 2023, for the North Carolina Library Association (NCLA) Biennial Conference. From the creation of training materials, workflow documentation, and marketing content to the authorship of articles, presentations, and other scholarship, writing is an important component of many library positions. But the practice of writing is often solitary, which can leave writers feeling isolated when they encounter challenges, setbacks, and questions. How can libraries help create and facilitate community for writers within their organizations? This presentation shares information about two different writing group models that have been implemented at UNC Greensboro. These groups–one library-focused and one campus-based–offer opportunities for goal-setting and accountability, discussion of challenges and strategies for handling them, and chances to connect with other writers, among other benefits. Speakers will discuss the needs that led to the development of these groups, the challenges and lessons learned, and will encourage attendees to consider potential opportunities for incorporating writing support strategies in their own workplaces and communities.

With open access established as a sharing and publishing practice in many academic disciplines, some authors are increasingly expecting and seeking assistance in identifying opportunities and funding for their open access publishing activities. Libraries can have an important role in educating authors and helping them understand options, costs, and benefits. By contributing to open access support work, Libraries can help meet the needs of their constituents while also building community in this area.

Slides from a presentation given February 10, 2022 for the Amigos Library Services Changing Standards, Local Choices: Navigating the Current Cataloging Landscape conference, online. Library cataloging has traditionally been directed by standards and structures that have not necessarily reflected - or even included - perspectives from or respectful descriptors for many marginalized individuals and groups. Critical cataloging practices offer metadata and cataloging personnel ways to address some of these inequities as well as a way to provide more accurate and respectful descriptions in bibliographic data and catalog search systems. This presentation will offer an introduction to critical cataloging and demonstrate its relevance to and potential impact on library personnel and users in contexts including name authority files, classification, subject headings, alternative vocabularies, and other aspects of resource description. Presenters will offer perspectives as learners, not experts, in this area. They will discuss their institution's exploration of critical cataloging in ongoing conversations, development of local workflows, and projects, including updating Cutter numbers and the reparative cataloging of a digital collection of public domain sheet music. The discussion of local critical cataloging projects will also address the challenges associated with taking on new initiatives during an increasingly demanding time of limited resources. This session will offer resources and potential starting points for attendees to think critically about their own metadata and cataloging work. It will also offer guidance about incorporating critical cataloging practices and concepts into the workplace.

Onboarding is the process in which new employees are introduced to an organization and its vision, mission, and values. Library literature reflects the importance of onboarding in welcoming new employees and positioning them for success in their roles, but many established onboarding programs and practices have been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and shifts to online and remote work. This column provides an overview of library literature and resources for onboarding and supporting new employees in the area of electronic resources, with a focus on resources and processes that are available online.

Library cataloging has traditionally been directed by standards and structures that have not necessarily reflected--or even included--perspectives from or respectful descriptors for many marginalized individuals and groups. How can library cataloging and metadata personnel educate themselves on ways to address these inequities, while also helping to empower users to see--and find--accurate representations of themselves, their communities, and their areas of research in library collections? Ongoing events and conversations at the national and international levels, in the library profession at large, and within the UNC Greensboro University Libraries have led members of the Technical Services department at UNCG to look for ways to start to address and answer these questions in their own work. This presentation will offer an introduction to the origins of critical cataloging, discuss its relationship to critical librarianship, and demonstrate its relevance to libraries and library workers in and beyond metadata and cataloging fields. Presenters will offer perspectives as learners in this area--not experts--and will discuss the ongoing conversations around critical cataloging in their department and the process and progress associated with the new and developing explorations of critical cataloging practice in their institution. The session will offer resources and potential starting points to help empower attendees to think critically about their own metadata and cataloging work, as well as guidance about incorporating critical cataloging practices and concepts into the workplace.

Evaluating journals can be challenging, especially for new researchers. This article discusses the application of information literacy skills and techniques, such as lateral reading, in the context of teaching researchers to evaluate journal quality and avoid predatory journals. Many libraries focus information literacy efforts on helping students develop skills in reflective discovery, evaluation, and ethical use of information. But information literacy skills are critical for lifelong learning, and similar techniques can be applied to help faculty and other researchers evaluate publication venues. This article will examine the connections between information literacy skills and scholarly communications, and will offer methods and practices for readers who wish to build on these connections in their own work.

Researchers have increasing opportunities to identify themselves and raise the profile of their research and scholarship through online researcher identity management and researcher profile systems. This column provides a basic introduction to researcher identity management and examines four widely used researcher profile systems: Google Scholar Citations, Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID), Scopus Author ID, and Web of Science ResearcherID. System benefits and comparisons are provided, with the purpose of helping researchers and librarians to select appropriate researcher identity management tools to support their work.

The concept and practice of remote work in library technical services is not new, but the scale and speed of the transition to remote work for many libraries due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented. This column provides an overview of pre-pandemic literature on remote work in library technical services and briefly examines the history, planning, case studies, technology and equity concerns, challenges, and potential benefits of remote work. Initial connections are drawn between existing literature and the impact of the pandemic on remote work, and future directions for research and discussion are offered.

Many campuses are seeing increased needs for support in scholarly communications areas such as open access, research identity management, scholarship metrics, and related topics. This article discusses a professional development program that addresses scholarly communications needs for online and in-person graduate students and faculty at UNC Greensboro (UNCG), through a collaborative, interdepartmental effort that brings together librarians from the departments of Research, Outreach, and Instruction (ROI) and Technical Services. The authors provide a brief overview of the literature related to scholarly communications needs and training in academic libraries and discuss the UNCG program’s inception, modules, format, assessment, and future directions.

The creation, sharing, and maintenance of documentation are critical to support the often detailed and complex work of library technical services units. This column examines documentation portals that share technical services policies and procedures, with a focus on library-based portals that are accessible to personnel within the associated libraries while also being fully or partially open to external users. A review of the literature is provided, as well as links to and descriptions of selected portal examples.

Name authority control—the process of selecting and maintaining a set of headings or access points for named entities—brings consistency to names in online systems and can help users locate needed items and identify related materials. Linked data provides the opportunity to extend name authority data sets and make them available to wider audiences. This column seeks to provide an overview of the landscape of local name authority projects using linked data, along with practices, challenges, and other considerations in this area.

Digital collections, institutional repositories, open educational resources, open access publishing, and new forms of digital scholarship are all ways in which academic libraries are growing their collections from the inside out as well as making this content widely available to other libraries and users. This article will explore national and global trends in library-enabled publishing and content creation, focusing on the kinds of collections being published by libraries, the ways that metadata can bring these collections together for improved access, and the role of consortia in the process.

The CNI-ARL Digital Scholarship Planning Workshop at Brown University, November 8–10, 2017, was an intensive, focused workshop for institutions at all stages of the digital scholarship planning process. This report, based on one participant's experience, touches on some of the highlights and takeaways from the sessions, which focused on campus needs and partnerships; staffing; governance and funding models; the applications of library and other content collections in teaching, learning, and research; student roles in digital scholarship; space and place; and the institutionalization of digital scholarship. A fundamental concept of the workshop was the acknowledgement of the wide variety of models and services digital scholarship can encompass and the critical need for each institution to pursue digital scholarship services that are in line with its strengths and the needs of its particular constituencies.

The collection and sharing of oral history is a growing area that libraries and archives are using to connect with their communities and document campus diversity. This column discusses opportunities for libraries and archives to include diverse and underrepresented voices in the historical record, highlighting the Wolf Tales project from the North Carolina State University Libraries, which was the topic of a talk by Virginia Ferris at the 2018 North Carolina Serials Conference. This column discusses that presentation and briefly examines oral history projects at several other institutions, providing perspective on the efforts to use oral histories to document campus and community diversity in the profession. Further resources for institutions interested in pursuing or growing oral history programs are also provided.

The Liaison Team Structure Review Task Force was convened in the 2017 fall semester, with the purpose of examining the liaison functional and subject team structure implemented in 2013-14 to determine how well it is functioning and what changes should be made in response to evolving needs and University Libraries’ strategic priorities. The task force reviewed identified weaknesses and challenges, including the disconnect between evolving liaison roles and the lack of opportunities for discussion and training regarding those evolving roles, the perceived excessive focus on collections and reference desk staffing, the lack of a central liaison coordinator, and workload issues related to collections work. New liaison opportunities were surfaced through a survey and through discussions with liaison team members. These included: support for online classes, teaching and co-teaching opportunities,community outreach, growth in Zotero support and needs, grants, accessibility services, Open Educational Resources, GIS, scholarly communications, identification of learning materials, and embedded librarianship.

Libraries are re-envisioning their services in many ways, including the exploration of roles in scholarly publishing and support for and creation of Open Access (OA) content. This presentation will give an overview of a mid-sized academic library's experience implementing and supporting Open Journal Systems (OJS) as a publishing platform for OA journals, and will also offer a case study of a journal which is not only hosted by the Libraries', but is staffed by library personnel.For institutions providing or considering support for scholarly journal publishing, this session will offer insight on issues that may surface during the implementation of these services. Presenters will discuss challenges and lessons learned at the macro level, in relation to service and support for the hosting institution; as well as at the level of the individual journal, providing insight from both sides of the fence. Slides from a presentation delivered March 20, 2017 at the Library Publishing Forum in Baltimore, MD. In 2010, the University Libraries at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro began offering support for open access journal publishing via Open Journal Systems (OJS). This service, developed in response to faculty requests for support in this area, complements a suite of OA projects that continue to grow and change as the University Libraries explore their roles in furthering academic discourse on campus and beyond. The intervening years have seen the Libraries’ OJS services move from experimental to established, and as of 2016, the Libraries' provide hosting services for twelve journals on a variety of scholarly subjects and with varying activity levels. Along the way, staff have confronted technical challenges, turnover and continuity issues, and questions about the specific roles of the Libraries within the support and publishing processes. Presenters will discuss the shift from experimental project to ongoing service and will provide information on roles, expectations, and skills needed for both journal personnel and library staff who work with OJS. In addition to giving a general overview of the Libraries’ OJS services, this session will provide a case study of the OJS-hosted Journal of Learning Spaces, which commenced publication in 2011 (http://libjournal.uncg.edu/jls). This journal, which was created to fill a need in the professional literature, publishes scholarly work related to all aspects of learning space design, operation, pedagogy, and assessment in higher education. Both speakers are active in editorial roles in JLS, and will address the challenges and changes the journal has undergone in establishing itself as a new, peer-reviewed, OA journal. Many university libraries are expanding their research services to include support for research data needs. But in a climate of growing demands and limited resources, how can libraries explore these options and address these needs without breaking the bank in terms of staff time or expertise? The University Libraries of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro began exploring these questions in 2012 and are continuing to grow a suite of research data support services to meet demands on campus and to educate new researchers. This collaborative effort builds on existing strengths within the Libraries by bringing together personnel from Research, Outreach, and Instruction (ROI); Technical Services; and Electronic Resources and Information Technology (ERIT). This presentation discusses the scope and component pieces of the University Libraries' research data management services, including the development of our service model and various associated activities: support for data management planning, a series of workshops for graduate students created in collaboration with our Institutional Review Board, outreach and training efforts, and institutional repository integration. Presenters address specific roles, workflows, challenges, and lessons learned, and provide perspectives from both public and technical services. This presentation was delivered on February 24th, 2017 as part of the Empirical Librarians Conference at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. This article summarizes a presentation delivered by Beth Bernhardt at the 2016 North Carolina Serials Conference. Bernhardt's talk provided an overview of predatory and unethical publishing practices, provided resources to consult when evaluating open access journal quality, and discussed examples from her work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). The presentation's focus was on helping librarians and others prepare to serve as resources for faculty members who may need assistance in evaluating open access journals as potential publication venues.
