Accurate and efficient theoretical techniques for describing ionic fluids are highly desirable for many applications across the physical, biological and materials sciences. With a rigorous statistical mechanical foundation, classical density functional theory (cDFT) is an appealing approach, but the competition between strong Coulombic interactions and steric repulsion limits the accuracy of current approximate functionals. Here, we extend a recently presented machine learning (ML) approach [Samm\"uller et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 120, e2312484120 (2023)] designed for systems with short-ranged interactions to ionic fluids. By adopting ideas from local molecular field theory, the framework we present amounts to using neural networks to learn the local relationship between the one-body direct correlation functions and inhomogeneous density profiles for a "mimic'' short-ranged system, with effects of long-ranged interactions accounted for in a mean-field, yet well-controlled, manner. By comparing to results from molecular simulations, we show that our approach accurately describes the structure and thermodynamics of the prototypical model for electrolyte solutions and ionic liquids: the restricted primitive model. In the superionic phase of silver iodide, we observe a distorted tetragonal structure characterized by symmetry breaking in the cation distribution. This phase competes with the well known bcc phase, with a symmetric cation distribution at an energetic cost of only a few meV/atom. The small energy difference suggests that these competing structures may both be thermally accessible near the superionic transition temperature. We also find that the distribution of silver ions depends on the low-temperature parent polymorph, with memory persisting in the superionic phase on the nanosecond time scales accessible in our simulations. Furthermore, simulations on the order 100ns reveal that even at temperatures where the bcc phase is stable, significant fluctuations toward the tetragonal lattice structure remain. Our results are consistent with many "anomalous" experimental observations and offer a molecular mechanism for the "memory effect" in silver iodide.

A central aim of statistical mechanics is to establish connections between a system's microscopic fluctuations and its macroscopic response to a perturbation. For non-equilibrium transport properties, this amounts to establishing Green-Kubo (GK) relationships. In hydrodynamics, relating such GK expressions for liquid-solid friction to macroscopic slip boundary conditions has remained a long-standing problem due to two challenges: (i) The GK running integral of the force autocorrelation function decays to zero rather than reaching a well-defined plateau value; and (ii) debates persist on whether such a transport coefficient measures an intrinsic interfacial friction or an effective friction in the system. Inspired by ideas from the coarse-graining community, we derive a GK relation for liquid-solid friction where the force autocorrelation is sampled with a constraint of momentum conservation in the liquid. Our expression does not suffer from the "plateau problem" and unambiguously measures an effective friction coefficient, in an analogous manner to Stokes' law. We further establish a link between the derived friction coefficient and the hydrodynamic slip length, enabling a straightforward assessment of continuum hydrodynamics across length scales. We find that continuum hydrodynamics describes the simulation results quantitatively for confinement length all the way down to 1 nm. Our results also make clear that water flow under nano-confinement is orders of magnitude slower compared to the macroscopic case. A central aim of multiscale modeling is to use results from the Schr\"odinger Equation to predict phenomenology on length scales that far exceed those of typical molecular correlations. In this work, we present a new approach rooted in classical density functional theory (cDFT) that allows us to accurately describe the solvation of apolar solutes across length scales. Our approach builds on the Lum-Chandler-Weeks (LCW) theory of hydrophobicity [K. Lum et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 103, 4570 (1999)] by constructing a free energy functional that uses a slowly-varying component of the density field as a reference. From a practical viewpoint, the theory we present is numerically simpler and generalizes to solutes with soft-core repulsion more easily than LCW theory. Furthermore, by assessing the local compressibility and its critical scaling behavior, we demonstrate that our LCW-style cDFT approach contains the physics of critical drying, which has been emphasized as an essential aspect of hydrophobicity by recent theories. As our approach is parameterized on the two-body direct correlation function of the uniform fluid and the liquid-vapor surface tension, it straightforwardly captures the temperature dependence of solvation. Nucleation in small volumes of water has garnered renewed interest due to the relevance of pore condensation and freezing under conditions of low partial pressures of water, such as in the upper troposphere. Molecular simulations can in principle provide insight on this process at the molecular scale that is challenging to achieve experimentally. However, there are discrepancies in the literature as to whether the rate in confined systems is enhanced or suppressed relative to bulk water at the same temperature and pressure. In this study, we investigate the extent to which the size of the critical nucleus and the rate at which it grows in thin films of water are affected by the thickness of the film. Our results suggest that nucleation remains bulk-like in films that are barely large enough accommodate a critical nucleus. This conclusion seems robust to the presence of physical confining boundaries. We also discuss the difficulties in unambiguously determining homogeneous nucleation rates in nanoscale systems, owing to the challenges in defining the volume. A general method of separating isotopes by centrifuging dissolved chemical compounds in a liquid solution is introduced. This technique can be applied to almost all elements and leads to large separation factors. The method has been demonstrated in several isotopic systems including Ca, Mo, O, and Li with single-stage selectivities of 1.046-1.067 per unit mass difference (e.g., 1.434 in 40Ca/48Ca, 1.134 in 16O/18O), which are beyond the capabilities of various conventional methods of isotope enrichment. Equations are derived to model the process and the results agree with those of the experiments. The scalability of the technique has been demonstrated by performing a three-stage enrichment of 48Ca, and the scalability is more broadly supported through analogies to the gas centrifuge, whereby countercurrent centrifugation can further multiply the separation factor by 5-10 times per stage in a continuous process. Optimal centrifuge conditions and solutions can achieve both high-throughput and highly efficient isotope separation.

Phillip L. Geissler made important contributions to the statistical mechanics of biological polymers, heterogeneous materials, and chemical dynamics in aqueous environments. He devised analytical and computational methods that revealed the underlying organization of complex systems at the frontiers of biology, chemistry, and materials science. In this retrospective, we celebrate his work at these frontiers.

Life on Earth depends upon the dissolution of ionic salts in water, particularly NaCl. However, an atomistic scale understanding of the process remains elusive. Simulations lend themselves conveniently to studying dissolution since they provide the spatio-temporal resolution that can be difficult to obtain experimentally. Nevertheless, the complexity of various inter- and intra-molecular interactions require careful treatment and long time scale simulations, both of which are typically hindered by computational expense. Here, we use advances in machine learning potential methodology to resolve for the first time at an ab initio level of theory the dissolution mechanism of NaCl in water. The picture that emerges is that of a steady ion-wise unwrapping of the crystal preceding its rapid disintegration, reminiscent of crumbling. The onset of crumbling can be explained by a strong increase in the ratio of the surface to volume of the crystal. Overall, dissolution is comprised of a series of highly dynamical microscopic sub-processes, resulting in an inherently stochastic mechanism. These atomistic level insights now pave the way for a general understanding of dissolution mechanisms in other crystals, and the methodology is primed for more complex systems of recent interest such as water/salt interfaces under flow and salt crystals under confinement.

Friction at water-carbon interfaces remains a major puzzle with theories and simulations unable to explain experimental trends in nanoscale waterflow. A recent theoretical framework -- quantum friction (QF)-- proposes to resolve these experimental observations by considering nonadiabatic coupling between dielectric fluctuations in water and graphitic surfaces. Here, using a classical model that enables fine-tuning of the solid's dielectric spectrum, we provide evidence from simulations in general support of QF. In particular, as features in the solid's dielectric spectrum begin to overlap with water's librational and Debye modes, we find an increase in friction in line with that proposed by QF. At the microscopic level, we find that this contribution to friction manifests more distinctly in the dynamics of the solid's charge density than that of water. Our findings suggest that experimental signatures of QF may be more pronounced in the solid's response rather than liquid water's.

Polar crystal surfaces play an important role in the functionality of many materials, and have been studied extensively over many decades. In this article, a theoretical framework is presented that extends existing theories by placing the surrounding solution environment on an equal footing with the crystal itself; this is advantageous, e.g., when considering processes such as crystal growth from solution. By considering the polar crystal as a stack of parallel plate capacitors immersed in a solution environment, the equilibrium adsorbed surface charge density is derived by minimizing the free energy of the system. In analogy to the well-known diverging surface energy of a polar crystal surface at zero temperature, for a crystal in solution it is shown that the "polar catastrophe" manifests as a diverging free energy cost to perturb the system from equilibrium. Going further than existing theories, the present formulation predicts that fluctuations in the adsorbed surface charge density become increasingly suppressed with increasing crystal thickness. We also show how, in the slab geometry often employed in both theoretical and computational studies of interfaces, an electric displacement field emerges as an electrostatic boundary condition, the origins of which are rooted in the slab geometry itself, rather than the use of periodic boundary conditions. This aspect of the work provides a firmer theoretical basis for the recent observation that standard "slab corrections" fail to correctly describe, even qualitatively, polar crystal surfaces in solution., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 appendix

The surface of a polar liquid presents a special environment for the solvation and organization of charged solutes, which differ from bulk behaviors in important ways. These differences have motivated many attempts to understand electrostatic response at aqueous interfaces in terms of a spatially varying dielectric permittivity, typically concluding that the dielectric constant of interfacial water is significantly lower than in the bulk liquid. Such analyses, however, are complicated by the potentially nonlocal nature of dielectric response over the short length scales of interfacial heterogeneity. Here we circumvent this problem for thin water films by adopting a thermodynamic approach. Using molecular simulations, we calculate the solvent's contribution to the reversible work of charging a parallel plate capacitor. We find good agreement with a simple dielectric continuum model that assumes bulk dielectric permittivity all the way up to the liquid's boundary, even for very thin ($\sim 1$ nm) films. This comparison requires careful attention to the placement of dielectric boundaries between liquid and vapor, which also resolves apparent discrepancies with dielectric imaging experiments., Comment: Main: 11 pages, 7 figures. The structure of liquid water in the proximity of an interface can deviate significantly from that of bulk water, with surface-induced structural perturbations typically converging to bulk values at about ~1 nm from the interface. While these structural changes are well established it is, in contrast, less clear how an interface perturbs the dynamics of water molecules within the liquid. Here, through an extensive set of molecular dynamics simulations of supercooled bulk and interfacial water films and nano-droplets, we observe the formation of persistent, spatially extended dynamical domains in which the average mobility varies as a function of the distance from the interface. This is in stark contrast with the dynamical heterogeneity observed in bulk water, where these domains average out spatially over time. We also find that the dynamical response of water to an interface depends critically on the nature of the interface and on the choice of interface definition. Overall these results reveal a richness in the dynamics of interfacial water that opens up the prospect of tuning the dynamical response of water through specific modifications of the interface structure or confining material.

In principle, the answer to the posed titular question is undoubtedly 'yes.' But in practice, requisite reference data for homogeneous systems have been obtained with a treatment of intermolecular interactions that is different from that typically employed for heterogeneous systems. In this article, we assess the impact of the choice of truncation scheme when comparing water in homogeneous and inhomogeneous environments. Specifically, we use explicit free energy calculations and a simple mean field analysis to demonstrate that using the 'cut-and-shift' version of the Lennard-Jones potential (common to most simple point charge models of water) results in a systematic increase in the melting temperature of ice I$_{\rm h}$. In addition, by drawing an analogy between a change in cutoff and a change in pressure, we use existing literature data for homogeneous ice nucleation at negative pressures to suggest that enhancements due to heterogeneous nucleation may have been overestimated by several orders of magnitude., Comment: Main article: 9 pages, 7 figures. Treating water as a linearly responding dielectric continuum on molecular length scales allows very simple estimates of solvation structure and thermodynamics for charged and polar solutes. While this approach can successfully account for basic length and energy scales of ion solvation, computer simulations indicate not only its quantitative inaccuracies but also its inability to capture some basic and important aspects of microscopic polarization response. Here we consider one such shortcoming, a failure to distinguish the solvation thermodynamics of cations from that of otherwise-identical anions, and we pursue a simple, physically inspired modification of the dielectric continuum model to address it. The adaptation is motivated by analyzing the orientational response of an isolated water molecule whose dipole is rigidly constrained. Its free energy suggests a Hamiltonian for dipole fluctuations that accounts implicitly for the influence of higher-order multipole moments, while respecting constraints of molecular geometry. We propose a field theory with the suggested form, whose nonlinear response breaks the charge symmetry of ion solvation. An approximate variational solution of this theory, with a single adjustable parameter, yields solvation free energies that agree closely with simulation results over a considerable range of solute size and charge., Comment: Main: 12 pages, 6 figures. The fundamental understanding of crystallization, in terms of microscopic kinetic and thermodynamic details, remains a key challenge in the physical sciences. Here, by using in situ graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, we reveal the atomistic mechanism of NaCl crystallization from solutions confined within graphene cells. We find that rock salt NaCl forms with a peculiar hexagonal morphology. We also see the emergence of a transitory graphite-like phase, which may act as an intermediate in a two-step pathway. With the aid of density functional theory calculations, we propose that these observations result from a delicate balance between the substrate-solute interaction and thermodynamics under confinement. The dielectric nature of polar liquids underpins much of their ability to act as useful solvents, but its description is complicated by the long-ranged nature of dipolar interactions. This is particularly pronounced under the periodic boundary conditions commonly used in molecular simulations. In this article, the dielectric properties of a water model whose intermolecular electrostatic interactions are entirely short-ranged are investigated. This is done within the framework of local molecular field theory (LMFT), which provides a well controlled mean-field treatment of long-ranged electrostatics. This short-ranged model gives a remarkably good performance on a number of counts, and its apparent shortcomings are readily accounted for. Anions generally associate more favorably with the air-water interface than cations. In addition to solute size and polarizability, the intrinsic structure of the unperturbed interface has been discussed as an important contributor to this bias. Here we assess quantitatively the role that intrinsic charge asymmetry of water's surface plays in ion adsorption, using computer simulations to compare model solutes of various size and charge. In doing so, we also evaluate the degree to which linear response theory for solvent polarization is a reasonable approach for comparing the thermodynamics of bulk and interfacial ion solvation. Consistent with previous works on bulk ion solvation, we find that the average electrostatic potential at the center of a neutral, sub-nanometer solute at the air-water interface depends sensitively on its radius, and that this potential changes quite nonlinearly as the solute's charge is introduced. The nonlinear response closely resembles that of the bulk. As a result, the net nonlinearity of ion adsorption is weaker than in bulk, but still substantial, comparable to the apparent magnitude of macroscopically nonlocal contributions from the undisturbed interface. Attaining accurate average structural properties in a molecular simulation should be considered a prerequisite if one aims to elicit meaningful insights into a system's behavior. For charged surfaces in contact with an electrolyte solution, an obvious example is the density profile of ions along the direction normal to the surface. Here we demonstrate that, in the slab geometry typically used in simulations, imposing an electric displacement field $D$ determines the integrated surface charge density of adsorbed ions at charged interfaces. This allows us to obtain macroscopic surface charge densities irrespective of the slab thickness used in our simulations. We also show that the commonly used Yeh-Berkowitz method and the 'mirrored slab' geometry both impose vanishing integrated surface charge density. Silver iodide is one of the most potent inorganic ice nucleating particles known, a feature generally attributed to the excellent lattice match between its basal Ag-(0001) and I-(000-1) surfaces, and ice. This crystal termination, however, is a type-III polar surface, and its surface energy therefore diverges with crystal size unless a polarity compensation mechanism prevails. In this simulation study, we investigate to what extent the surrounding aqueous environment is able to provide such polarity compensation. On its own, we find that pure water is unable to stabilize the AgI crystal in a physically reasonable manner, and that mobile charge carriers such as dissolved ions, are essential. In other words, proximate dissolved ions must be considered an integral part of the heterogeneous ice formation mechanism. The simulations we perform utilize recent advances in simulation methodology in which appropriate electric and electric displacement fields are imposed. A useful by-product of this study is the direct comparison to the commonly used Yeh-Berkowitz method that this enables. Here we find that naive application of the latter leads to physically unreasonable results, and greatly influences the structure of water in the contact layer. The manner in which electrolyte solutions respond to electric fields is crucial to understanding the behavior of these systems both at, and away from, equilibrium. The present formulation of linear response theory for such systems is inconsistent with common molecular dynamics (MD) implementations. Using the finite field formalism, suitably adapted for finite temperature MD, we investigate the response of bulk aqueous NaCl solutions to both finite Maxwell ($\mathbf{E}$) and electric displacement ($\mathbf{D}$) fields. The constant $\mathbf{E}$ Hamiltonian allows us to derive the linear response relation for the ionic conductivity in a simple manner that is consistent with the forces used in conventional MD simulations. Simulations of a simple point charge model of an electrolyte solution at constant $\mathbf{E}$ yield conductivities at infinite dilution within 15% of experimental values. The finite field approach also allows us to measure the solvent's dielectric constant from its polarization response, which is seen to decrease with increasing ionic strength. Comparison of the dielectric constant measured from polarization response versus polarization fluctuations enables direct evaluation of the dynamic contribution to this dielectric decrement, which we find to be small but not insignificant. Using the constant $\mathbf{D}$ formulation, we also rederive the Stillinger-Lovett conditions, which place strict constraints on the coupling between solvent and ionic polarization fluctuations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. When an ice crystal is born from liquid water two key changes occur: (i) the molecules order; and (ii) the mobility of the molecules drops as they adopt their lattice positions. Most research on ice nucleation (and crystallization in general) has focused on understanding the former with less attention paid to the latter. However, supercooled water exhibits fascinating and complex dynamical behavior, most notably dynamical heterogeneity (DH), a phenomenon where spatially separated domains of relatively mobile and immobile particles coexist. Strikingly, the microscopic connection between the DH of water and the nucleation of ice has yet to be unraveled directly at the molecular level. Here we tackle this issue via computer simulations which reveal that: (i) ice nucleation occurs in low-mobility regions of the liquid; (ii) there is a dynamical incubation period in which the mobility of the molecules drops prior to any ice-like ordering; and (iii) ice-like clusters cause arrested dynamics in surrounding water molecules. With this we establish a clear connection between dynamics and nucleation. We anticipate that our findings will pave the way for the examination of the role of dynamical heterogeneities in heterogeneous and solution-based nucleation.

We analyse the nonlinear behaviour of a third-order class-D amplifier, and demonstrate the remarkable effectiveness of the recently introduced ripple compensation (RC) technique in reducing the audio distortion of the device. The amplifier converts an input audio signal to a high-frequency train of rectangular pulses, whose widths are modulated according to the input signal (pulse-width modulation) and employs negative feedback. After determining the steady-state operating point for constant input and calculating its stability, we derive a small-signal model (SSM), which yields in closed form the transfer function relating (infinitesimal) input and output disturbances. This SSM shows how the RC technique is able to linearise the small-signal response of the device. We extend this SSM through a fully nonlinear perturbation calculation of the dynamics of the amplifier, based on the disparity in time scales between the pulse train and the audio signal. We obtain the nonlinear response of the amplifier to a general audio signal, avoiding the linearisation inherent in the SSM; we thereby more precisely quantify the reduction in distortion achieved through RC. Finally, simulations corroborate our theoretical predictions and illustrate the dramatic deterioration in performance that occurs when the amplifier is operated in an unstable regime. Inferring properties of macroscopic solutions from molecular simulations is complicated by the limited size of systems that can be feasibly examined with a computer. When long-ranged electrostatic interactions are involved, the resulting finite size effects can be substantial and may attenuate very slowly with increasing system size, as shown by previous work on dilute ions in bulk aqueous solution. Here we examine corrections for such effects, with an emphasis on solvation near interfaces. Our central assumption follows the perspective of H\"{u}nenberger and McCammon [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 1856 (1999)]: Long-wavelength solvent response underlying finite size effects should be well described by reduced models like dielectric continuum theory, whose size dependence can be calculated straightforwardly. Applied to an ion in a periodic slab of liquid coexisting with vapor, this approach yields a finite size correction for solvation free energies that differs in important ways from results previously derived for bulk solution. For a model polar solvent, we show that this new correction quantitatively accounts for the variation of solvation free energy with volume and aspect ratio of the simulation cell. Correcting periodic slab results for an aqueous system requires an additional accounting for the solvent's intrinsic charge asymmetry, which shifts electric potentials in a size-dependent manner. The accuracy of these finite size corrections establishes a simple method for a posteriori extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit, and also underscores the realism of dielectric continuum theory down to the nanometer scale., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 2 appendices

In machine lip-reading, which is identification of speech from visual-only information, there is evidence to show that visual speech is highly dependent upon the speaker [1]. Here, we use a phoneme-clustering method to form new phoneme-to-viseme maps for both individual and multiple speakers. We use these maps to examine how similarly speakers talk visually. We conclude that broadly speaking, speakers have the same repertoire of mouth gestures, where they differ is in the use of the gestures.
