Abstract

We propose the individual-level microfoundations of subsidiary CEOs in emerging markets as antecedents of the strategic agility of multinational enterprises, and subsidiary embeddedness as a key organizational-level moderator of these relationships. Combining quantitative data on subsidiary CEOs operating in India with qualitative interviews with Italian HQ counterparts, our results suggest that subsidiary CEOs’ tenure in emerging markets, along with their overall experience, affects MNE strategic agility positively. Similarly, CEOs’ cognitive characteristics - problem solving and reasoning, and language and communication skills (individual-level microfoundations) - affected strategic agility positively, while subsidiary embeddedness moderated these relationships in different ways, leaving space for fresh managerial and theoretical considerations. © 2021.

Abstract

Clostridioides difficile infections are a significant threat to our healthcare system, and rapid and accurate diagnostics are crucial to implement the necessary infection prevention and control measurements. Nucleic acid amplification tests are such reliable diagnostic tools for the detection of toxigenic Clostridioides difficile strains directly from stool specimens. In this multicenter evaluation, we determined the performance of the revogene C. difficile assay. The analysis was conducted on prospective stool specimens collected from six different sites in Europe. The performance of the revogene C. difficile assay was compared to the different routine diagnostic methods and, for a subset of the specimens, against toxigenic culture. In total, 2621 valid stool specimens were tested, and the revogene C. difficile assay displayed a sensitivity/specificity of 97.1% [93.3–99.0] and 98.9% [98.5–99.3] for identification of Clostridioides difficile infection. Discrepancy analysis using additional methods improved this performance to 98.8% [95.8–99.9] and 99.6% [99.2–99.8], respectively. In comparison to toxigenic culture, the revogene C. difficile assay displayed a sensitivity/specificity of 93.0% [86.1–97.1] and 99.5% [98.7–99.9], respectively. These results indicate that the revogene C. difficile assay is a robust and reliable aid in the diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile infections.

Abstract

In further developing the acoustic emission (AE) technology for bearing monitoring, it is essential that a relationship is determined between bearing operational parameters, such as speed and load, and the generation of AE activity. Hitherto, almost all published investigations on the application of AE technology to bearing monitoring have been based on systems that operate at fixed speed and/or load conditions. In reality, a significant proportion of bearings operate under variable speed and load conditions; therefore, the growth of AE technology in monitoring bearings under such conditions requires an understanding of the influence of bearing operational parameters on the generation of AE. This paper presents experimental tests undertaken at near isothermal conditions aimed at understanding the influence of speed and load on the generation of AE. The results of the program lead to the introduction of AE operational maps. It is concluded that under an elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime, AE activity can be directly related to the theoretically predicted specific film thickness within the bearing. 39. A novel movement disorder in related male Labrador retrievers characterized by extreme generalized muscular stiffness

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the clinical phenotype of a new motor disorder in Labrador Retrievers. Animals and Methods: Case series study. Seven young male Labrador Retrievers presented for evaluation of stiff gait. Results: All affected dogs had generalized muscular stiffness, persistent at rest and resulting in restricted joint movements. They showed a forward flexed posture, festinating gait, and bradykinesia. Signs developed between 2 and 16 months of age and tended to stabilize in adulthood. Needle electromyogram in the conscious state showed continuous motor unit activity in resting epaxial and proximal limb muscles. This activity was abolished by general anesthesia. Muscle and nerve histopathology was normal. In 2 dogs necropsied, astrocytosis was evident throughout the spinal cord gray matter, reticular formation and caudate nuclei. Decreased neuronal counts were selectively found in the spinal cord Rexed's lamina VII, but not in VIII and IX. Pedigree analysis showed that the affected dogs were from 5 related litters. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: This new hypertonicity syndrome in Labrador Retrievers is unique because of the selective distribution of the histological lesions, the lack of progression in adulthood, and its exclusive occurrence in male dogs. Pedigree analysis suggests an X‐linked hereditary disease, although other modes of inheritance cannot be ruled out with certainty. We hypothesize that altered output from basal nuclei and reticular formation together with motor neuron disinhibition caused by a decreased number of spinal cord interneurons leads to the muscular stiffness

Abstract

The number of global R&D partnerships has grown in recent times thanks to the wealth of cross-cultural knowledge and skills they provide to businesses, allowing firms to significantly differentiate their innovation processes and upgrade their innovation performance. But, in order to integrate and capitalize on external knowledge drawn through these international partnerships, companies also need to more effectively develop key internal capabilities. While the literature shows that absorptive capacity is critical in this process, only few studies successfully break up this concept into sub-capacities and analyze their specific impacts on firm's innovation performance, in particular in the specific and underdeveloped context of global R&D partnerships (GPs). This study addresses this research gap by empirically analyzing the interrelation between global R&D partnerships, search and integrative capacities, and innovation performance. We tested our hypotheses on a sample of 112 medium-sized Italian firms with established GPs, leveraging a Partial Least Square (PLS) Structural Equation Model (SEM). Our results suggest that knowledge drawn from GPs plays a vital role in the innovation processes of the analyzed firms, but only when combined with the development of both of the internal sub-capacities we investigated (namely search and integrative capacities) thus, demonstrating an indirect effect. Also, search capacity was found to have a stronger effect compared to integrative capacity, while also affecting the integrative capacity of the firm in question. The implications from a managerial perspective are also provided in order to stimulate debate on international R&D collaborations. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Biology based treatment reduction, i.e. surgery alone also in case of not totally resected tumors, was advised in neuroblastoma patients with localized resectable disease without MYCN amplification. However, whether the genomic background of these tumors may influence outcome was unknown and therefore scrutinized in a meta-analysis comprising two prospective therapy studies and a ‘validation’ cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Diagnostic samples were derived from 406 INSS stages 1/2A/2B tumors from three cohorts: LNESGI/II and COG. Genomic data were analyzed in two age groups (cut-off: 18 months) and quality controlled by the SIOPEN Biology Group. RESULTS: In both patient age groups stage 2 tumors led to similarly reduced event-free survival (5y-EFS: 83+3% versus 80+4%), but overall survival was only decreased in patients >18m (5y-OS: 97+1% versus 87+4%; p=0.001).
