Energy research seeking to influence policy in low- and -middle-income countries (LMICs) is often funded by ��� and conceptualised by authors in - institutions from high-income countries (HICs). Research agendas and policy recommendations determined in HICs potentially yield the most influence on policymaking for LMICs. This leaves a multidimensional gap in how LMICs frame, contextualise, evidence and enact policy processes. The unique contribution of this paper is analysing the dynamics of prevalent energy research on LMICs through a multi-method approach using bibliometric, network science and regression-based techniques. An innovative data-driven framework was established using a sample of 6,636 papers from the Web of Science database, combined with journal impact data from Scimago Journal Ranking and country economic data from the World Bank. Results show the existence of a cycle of imbalances across research practices. Most papers recommending energy policy for LMICs have a first author based in a HIC, funded by a HIC institution. Total citations of articles on energy policy in LMICs increase with the GDP of the first author���s country (a 1% increase in GDP is correlated with a 0.68% increase in total citations). Funders support authors based in countries of the same income band as them, or higher. Therefore, we recommend revising research practices and HIC funding policies to place local actors and knowledge at the heart of energy policy research, enabling high-impact policymaking in LMICs.

To explore modular organization of chromosomes in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), we applied ‘population-scale’ correlational structuring of 739 histone H3-lysine 27 acetylation and H3-lysine 4 trimethylation profiles, generated from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of 568 cases and controls. Neuronal histone acetylomes and methylomes assembled as thousands of cis-regulatory domains (CRDs), revealing fine-grained, kilo-to megabase scale chromatin organization at higher resolution but firmly integrated into Hi-C chromosomal conformations. Large clusters of domains that were hyperacetylated in disease shared spatial positioning within the nucleus, predominantly regulating PFC projection neuron function and excitatory neurotransmission. Hypoacetylated domains were linked to inhibitory interneuron- and myelination-relevant genes. Chromosomal modular architecture is affected in SCZ and BD, with hyperacetylated domains showing unexpectedly strong convergences defined by cell type, nuclear topography, genetic risk, and active chromatin state across a wide developmental window.

38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1681-1682, Buildings play an important role in everyone's life: they serve as homes, workplaces, schools, shopping centres, hospitals or other public buildings. Nevertheless, about 75% of the EU building stock is not energy efficient, leading to a large amount of the energy produced being wasted. To minimize energy loss, existing buildings need to undergo energy efficient renovations. However, there is a particular deficit in finding suitable financing schemes for the implementation of energy efficiency measures. Innovative financing solutions are needed to enable energy-efficient retrofits on a large scale and to strengthen collaboration between all stakeholders (project promoters, public/private financial institutions, end-users) and especially with citizens. Based on the ongoing research activities in the frame of the H2020 European project CitizEE, this paper presents the latest advancements of the innovative Citizen Financing Scheme of the Pilot VIPA based in Lithuania. The VIPA scheme enables citizens to become prosumers (people who both consume and produce electricity) through the combination and leveraging of different funding sources.

Os modelos numéricos têm vindo a adquirir um peso cada vez maior na resolução de problemas complexos no âmbito da engenharia hidráulica. No entanto, esses modelos não são ainda uma ferramenta totalmente consolidada em casos de estruturas hidráulicas e de escoamentos com elevada complexidade. Nesta comunicação é apresentado um estudo do escoamento ao longo do novo descarregador de cheias complementar, em construção na Barragem de Caniçada, em que foram utilizadas medições realizadas em modelo físico para a calibração e validação de um modelo numérico CFD. Neste sentido, após uma breve apresentação da barragem de Caniçada e a caracterização do descarregador de cheias, da campanha experimental levada a cabo no modelo físico e do modelo numérico utilizado, são discutidos e comparados os resultados obtidos por ambos os modelos. A barragem de Caniçada foi construída em 1955 e está localizada na região Noroeste de Portugal. O sistema de órgãos hidráulicos de descarga de cheias foi objeto de estudo em modelo físico reduzido não distorcido à escala 1/62 no Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC). Esse estudo em modelo reduzido teve como objetivo a avaliação das condições do escoamento nos descarregadores em funcionamento conjunto ou isolado e a validação das formas de projeto do novo descarregador em túnel. Foram realizadas medições neste modelo com a finalidade de validar simulações numéricas. A simulação numérica do escoamento ao longo do descarregador foi realizada com recurso ao software comercial FLOW 3D. A comparação de resultados dos modelos físico e numérico, designadamente na vazão, alturas do escoamento, pressões médias e valores de alcance do jacto, demonstrou relações aceitáveis. Em conclusão, considera-se que o software comercial utilizado pode ser pertinente para a previsão do funcionamento de um descarregador de cheias deste tipo em fases iniciais de projeto. 13pp DHA/NRE

Esta comunicação reúne contribuições recentes de estudos dos autores sobre os efeitos da altura relativa do escoamento, da dimensão relativa dos sedimentos do leito, do tempo, da forma dos pilares e do seu ângulo de viés em relação à direção do escoamento na profundidade de equilíbrio de cavidades de erosão que se desenvolvem junto de pilares simples. Estas contribuições baseiam-se em campanhas experimentais de características únicas, no sentido em que foram sistematicamente conduzidas com durações superiores às da vasta maioria dos trabalhos publicados na literatura. A caracterização de parte daqueles efeitos é claramente mais completa e rigorosa por comparação com o que se encontra publicado em literatura da especialidade enquanto, noutros casos, se confirmam resultados anteriormente publicados. Thereafter some corrective measures were implemented, including the construction of a new complementary spillway. The paper summarizes the main features of the new spillway design, developed by AQUALOGUS. The selected solution is a gate-controlled ogee crest, followed by a 200 m long tunnel scoped in the slope of the left bank, designed for a discharge of 2062 m3/s. The hydraulic performance of the designed structure was analysed by a study developed on a hydraulic physical model, built at LNEC on a scale of 1/62. Results and conclusions that allowed improving the design structure shapes are described, with particular emphasis on the use of the reduced physical model. An experimental campaign of 8 long-duration tests on scouring at complex piers was carried out under steady clear-water flow conditions. The aim was to evaluate the contribution of complex pier components on the total local scour depth. Data was also used to describe the temporal evolution of scour. A new approach to evaluate the maximum scour depth associated with a subtraction concept is suggested which considers the different sets of complex piers components. Two predictors (FDOT and HEC-18), based on a scour depth superposition concept are discussed, concluding that FDOT leads to similar results as the measured values, while HEC-18 leads to underestimation of the total scour depth. Throughout the planning and design of hydraulic structures, engineers and researchers are increasingly integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) into the process. Despite reports of success in the past, there is still no comprehensive assessment that assigns ability to CFD models to simulate a wide range of different spillways configurations. The complementary spillway of Salamonde dam, located in the north of Portugal, is controlled by an ogee crest and two radial gates, followed by a free surface flow tunnel, with a rather complex geometry, and a terminal ski jump which directs the jet into the river bed. The present paper analyses the ability of a CFD model (FLOW-3D) to simulate the flows along this spillway. The spillway was primarily tested and developed in a physical model built in the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), where discharges and flow depths were measured in ten defined cross-sections for four different gate openings conditions. These results were used to calibrate the numerical model and to analyze the differences between physical and numerical models results. It is shown that there is an accurate agreement between physical and numerical model discharges. Concerning the flow depths, the FLOW-3D represents reasonably well the flow behavior, but slightly underestimates the flow depth in some points of the cross-sections. A sensitivity analysis for the conditions and parameters of the numerical model (e.g., 1st vs 2nd order momentum advection, turbulent mixing length TLEN, mesh size) was carried out. According to FLOW-3D results, for a certain reservoir level, spillway discharge and flow depth are highly dependent on mesh size. Conclusions about the most adequate FLOW-3D options to adopt are presented. The calibrated model was used to simulate the spillway design discharge and to assess the hydraulic behavior of the outlet structure and of the jet impingement characteristics. The paper summarizes recent contributions of the authors on the effects of relative flow depth, relative sand size, time and fluid viscosity, on the scour depth at single piers. These contributions rely on unique experiments in the sense that they are systematically longer than the vast majority of those found in the literature. The characterization of the effects of relative sand size and time is further improved as compared with existing literature while the effect of the relative flow depth confirms previous findings. New predictors are suggested. Viscous effects conveyed by the approach flow seem non-negligible; this is a new contribution that deserves further research. Além disso, propomos-nos a verificar se tais práticas modificam-se em razão do ano escolar para o qual cada participante leciona. Para tanto, entrevistamos 23 professoras do ensino fundamental, sendo 11 docentes de 1º ano e 12 de 5º ano, de escolas públicas localizadas em bairros de classe baixa do município de Vitória, Espírito Santo. Realizamos entrevistas individuais, de acordo com o método clínico piagetiano. A análise dos dados foi realizada a partir da teoria piagetiana e da sistematização proposta por Delval. Analisamos as concepções de justiça das professoras, as motivações para o ensino da justiça e os procedimentos que as entrevistadas consideram que utilizam para ensinar esse valor moral. Os resultados obtidos permitem considerar que a concepção de justiça das docentes está, sobretudo, relacionada à temática dos direitos dos indivíduos. Com relação à justiça, todas as profissionais consideram que ensinam este valor moral em suas práticas pedagógicas. A respeito das motivações para esta prática, averiguamos que as professoras ensinam a justiça principalmente pelo fato de essa ser uma responsabilidade da escola. Por sua vez, quanto aos procedimentos de ensino da justiça, constatamos que a maioria deles trata de meios considerados como verbal impositivo e ação impositiva, isto é, estão embasados em práticas impositivas. Ademais, grande parte dos procedimentos está embasada exclusivamente na linguagem oral das docentes. A maioria das participantes justifica os procedimentos adotados no ensino da justiça tendo como foco o aluno, ou seja, tratam de práticas que possuem como embasamento os educandos. Porém, quando analisamos os métodos empregados pelas entrevistadas, constatamos que a maior parte deles diz respeito a métodos com o uso da imposição, o que pode não favorecer os procedimentos ditos ativos e, provavelmente, o desenvolvimento moral dos alunos. Com relação aos dados encontrados acerca dos anos escolares pesquisados, destacamos que as docentes que lecionam para o 5º ano mencionam mais procedimentos com base em práticas impositivas. Por fim, vale dizer que as participantes de 1º ano são as que mais justificaram os procedimentos com foco no aluno. De maneira geral, os dados de nossa pesquisa mostram que apesar de as concepções de justiça das participantes possuírem predominância de características da moral autônoma, a maior parte dos procedimentos utilizados por elas no ensino do aludido valor pode não favorecer o desenvolvimento da autonomia nos alunos, pois é embasada em práticas impositivas. Com este estudo, esperamos contribuir para que políticas públicas sejam implantadas visando à melhoria da qualidade da educação em valores morais no contexto escolar, notadamente no que diz respeito ao ensino da justiça. Assim, ressaltamos a necessidade de trabalhos contínuos de ensino da justiça, pensados e programados para desenvolver indivíduos autônomos.

Introduction: Infrastructures such as bridges are simultaneously influenced by and influence both the sediment transport and the river or estuarine morphology. The interventions in bridges often have impacts on sediment transport, hence being necessary to consider the mitigation measures technically feasible with an appropriate cost. The management of sediments around infrastructures is focused on their safety and also on safety criteria for navigation, among other river uses. The present study emphasizes the main situations related with infrastructures founded on mobile beds, in rivers and estuaries, such as predictions of the bed morphology, erosion and sedimentation and time variations of the bed. Methods: The impact of infrastructures on the sediment transport in rivers can be characterized by some experiments of local scour around complex piers that are being carried out in the framework of a current study. The experimental campaign includes tests run on a 40.0 m long glass-sided rectangular tilting flume at LNEC, having a cross section 2.0 m wide and 1.0 m deep. The study discusses the results obtained in other experimental facilities in two Portuguese Universities within the framework of the research project. In all the experimental campaign the mobile bed was simulated with uniform quartz sand of median size 0.86 mm. Hence, a large set of experiments is obtained, considering different pier geometries and hydraulic flow ratios. Results: In addition to the observation of local scour around the bridge piers, process in which the eroded material is transported from the obstacle vicinity hole to the downstream area, the study results include data also used to obtain a general understanding of the bed morphology. Both the transported and the deposited materials downstream the piers produce large shallow bars that can be hazardous to navigation. According to Apitz (2012) it is necessary to carry out a sustainable sediment management to maintain the navigational channels. Fig. 1 shows one of the mentioned bars in a flume experiment of local scour around complex piers, where the upper part, a), shows the final result in plan view and the lateral view is included below, b). As confirmed by the study tests, mitigation of this impact can be obtained by means of scour protection procedures, where both conventional or non-conventional methods produce downstream bars with reduced dimensions.Discussion: Experiments as the example of Fig. 1 make it possible to deduce a new prediction method for evaluating the maximum scour holes developed. This result is used for safety purposes in bridge design criteria and represents the influence of the movable bed changes on the infrastructure. On the other hand, the same tests can produce additional results, in particular when characterizing the influence of the infrastructure on the downstream initial movable bed. This characterization includes the evaluation of the extensions of bars and the induced reduction in the water depth, h, by the bar height, hb, parameter that becomes relevant when the question is related to evaluating the potential of navigation. The sediment management in this case can be oriented to determine the dredging volumes necessary to the navigation targets. Experimental results include several geometries and situations, such as closer approximation to real cases. This is the case of obstacles skewed to the main flow direction, which can produce more extended and complex bars. The main objective of this study is to evaluate and compare three available methods for the prediction of the local scour depth around complex bridge piers using new experimental data. The complex pier model used in the study was embedded in uniform diameter (0.86 mm) sand. A total of 9 tests were carried out in a 40 m long and 2 m wide rectangular sand-bed tilting flume. Tests lasted between 15 and 25 days, for a variety of pile cap positions relative to the initial bed under steady clear-water flow conditions. The comparison of predictions with measurements, including some selected from the literature, allows stating that the HEC-18, Auckland and Florida methods potentially lead to both overestimations and underestimations, depending on the relative position of the pile cap. The scour depth evolution around single piers has a unique logarithmic trend under clearwater, according to diverse authors. However, in the case of complex piers, corresponding to a column funded in a pile cap supported by a pile group, the scour depth evolution can have different trends that are associated with the presence and exposure in the flow of the three structural elements. This paper presents the results of maximum scour depth evolution in five tests of long duration between 13 and 27 days. These tests are representative of different situations in which the pile cap can be localized in relation to the initial bed level: above the bed, partially or completely buried in the bed. A evolução temporal da profundidade máxima de erosão localizada junto de pilares simples em escoamentos sem transporte sólido generalizado segue uma tendência logarítmica, de acordo com o constatado na maioria dos estudos experimentais. No entanto, no caso de pilares complexos, constituídos por uma coluna fundada num maciço de encabeçamento suportado por um grupo de estacas, essa evolução pode ter diferentes tendências. A progressão do desenvolvimento da cavidade junto deste tipo de pilares é ditada pela presença e exposição relativa ao escoamento dos três elementos estruturais. Na presente comunicação apresentam-se os resultados de evolução temporal da profundidade máxima de erosão em três ensaios de longa duração, conduzidos durante cerca de 20 dias numa instalação experimental do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil. Estes três ensaios são representativos das três situações em que se podem distinguir as alterações na tendência da evolução temporal dos ensaios em pilares complexos relativamente a pilares simples. Assim, numa primeira situação, os três elementos estruturais estão todos expostos ao escoamento, numa segunda situação, o maciço de encabeçamento está parcialmente enterrado na areia e, numa última, o maciço está completamente enterrado. Na segunda e terceira situações o processo erosivo, na fase principal de evolução, tem distintas etapas, sendo estas associadas à exposição parcial dos diferentes elementos estruturais na cavidade de erosão entretanto já formada. Os ensaios conduzidos permitiram também aferir o tempo de duração adequado para este tipo de estudos. Na realidade, alguns dos autores que conduziram estudos com pilares complexos utilizam como critério de paragem dos ensaios que a variação da profundidade de erosão seja inferior a 5% do diâmetro das estacas durante um período de 24 horas. Claramente no presente estudo os resultados provaram a necessidade de conduzir ensaios com maior duração, contrariando a metodologia geralmente utilizada. DHA/NRE 2012 6-8 fevereiro

Resumo - O estudo foi conduzido em um sistema silvipastoril na Embrapa Caprinos em Sobral-CE, Brasil, no período de 1995 a 2002. Objetivou-se o desenvolvimento de um sistema de manejo sustentável para produção de madeira e forragem e, também, para redução do período de colheita da madeira. As árvores foram submetidas a um corte de uniformização a 10 cm de altura e a quatro tratamentos. Os tratamentos foram aplicados a grupos, selecionados ao acaso, de 12 plantas: 1) preservação de um fuste com o controle da rebrotação; 2) preservação de dois fustes com o controle da rebrotação; 3) preservação de três fustes com o controle da rebrotação; e 4) preservação de todos os fustes. Foram coletados dados da altura total, do diâmetro à altura do peito, da produção de estacas e lenha e da fitomassa da forragem à altura de 1,6 m. Os tratamentos 1, 2 e 3 resultaram em aumento na produção de madeira e significativa redução no período de colheita das estacas de 15 para 7 anos. O tratamento 2, preservação de dois fustes por planta, resultou no maior retorno econômico, fornecendo o maior ganho adicional por hectare e ano. Além da boa produção de forragem, a taxa de incremento médio anual de produção de madeira em todos os tratamentos foi superior às encontradas na região semi-árida do Nordeste do Brasil. [In situ management of sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.) for simultaneous production of wood and forage in a silvopastoral systems]. Abstract - A study was conducted on a silvopastoral system at Embrapa Caprinos in Sobral, Ceara, Brazil, during 1995-2002 to develop a sustainable forest management for simultaneous production of wood and forage as well as to reduce the wood harvesting period. Trees were submitted to a uniform cut at 10 cm height and four treatments. The treatments were applied to twelve randomly selected groups of plants as follows: 1) preservation of one stem with sprout control; 2) preservation of two stems with sprout control; 3) preservation of three stems with sprout control; 4) preservation of all stems. Data were collected for total height, breast height diameter, fence post and firewood production, and forage phytomass at 1.6 m height. Treatments 1, 2, and 3 resulted in increased wood and forage production and significant reduction in fence post harvesting from 15 to 7 years. Treatment 2 (preservation of two stems per plant) resulted in the greatest economic returns providing the highest additional gain per hectare per year. Besides increased forage production, the mean annual increment rate of wood production was superior to those found in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil.

Resumo - O estudo foi conduzido em um sistema agrissilvipastoril na Embrapa Caprinos em Sobral - CE, Brasil, no período de 1999 a 2001. Objetivou-se determinar o efeito do sistema de produção agrissilvipastoril sobre o desempenho produtivo de ovelhas Crioulas, na região semi-árida do Nordeste brasileiro. Nos sistemas agrissilvipastoril e tradicional foram utilizadas matrizes ovinas Crioulas e reprodutores Santa Inês. Com relação às matrizes foram monitorados os pesos ao pós-parto e à desmama, a fertilidade ao parto, a prolificidade e a distribuição estacional dos partos. Os resultados mostraram que o peso vivo médio (PVM) das matrizes ao pós-parto não foi influenciado pelo sistema de produção e pela estação do ano, porém registrou-se o efeito de ano, e que o PVM à desmama não foi influenciado por nenhuma das fontes de variação estudadas. Os valores dos parâmetros reprodutivos avaliados, fertilidade ao parto e prolificidade, foram elevados para o sistema agrissilvipastoril e normais para o tradicional, comparados aos obtidos na região. No sistema agrissilvipastoril, apesar de não ter havido diferença no desempenho das matrizes, é possível a obtenção de três partos em dois anos, mais bem distribuídos, sem comprometimento do desempenho dos animais, desde que haja suplementação no período seco. ABSTRACT: A study was conducted at Embrapa Caprinos in Sobral, Ceara, Brazil, during 1999 ? 2001, to determine the effect of an agrosilvipastoral production system on the productive performance of Creole ewes in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil. Creole ewes and Santa Inês rams were used in the agrosilvipastoral and traditional systems. Ewe weight at post-partum and weaning, fertility at birth, prolificacy rate and seasonal birth distribution were monitored. The results showed that medium alive weight (MAW) of ewes at postpartum was not influenced by the production system and season; however, year effect was recorded and MAW at weaning was not influenced by any of the variation sources studied. The values of the reproductive parameters fertility at birth and prolificacy were high for the agrosilvipastoral system and normal for the traditional system, compared to those obtained in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil. Although no differences were found in the performance of the ewes, three better distributed births are likely to occur in two years in the agrosilvipastoral systemwithout compromising animal performance, provided feed supplement is available during the dry period.
