In this article we study the possibility that neutral and charged scalars lighter than the 125 GeV Higgs boson might exist within the framework of the $\mathcal{CP}$-conserving Aligned-two-Higgs-doublet model. Depending on which new scalar (scalars) is (are) light, seven different scenarios may be considered. Using the open-source code HEPfit, which relies on Bayesian statistics, we perform global fits for all seven light-mass scenarios. The constraints arising from vacuum stability, perturbativity, electroweak precision observables, flavour observables, Higgs signal strengths, and direct-detection results at the LEP and the LHC are taken into account. Reinterpreted data from slepton searches are considered too. It turns out that the seven scenarios contain sizeable regions of their parameter space compatible with all current data. Two-Higgs-doublet models come with an augmented parameter space which allows them to possibly solve some of the shortcomings of the Standard Model, and opens the window to a plethora of new phenomena to be discovered. The introduction of scalar-mediated tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents may be tackled with the imposition of extra symmetries on the model or, alternatively, by demanding a strict proportionality between the flavour-changing couplings and fermion mass matrices. The latter is the very idea behind the Aligned-Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (A2HDM). The coefficients that govern such proportionality are, in general, complex and, therefore, possible new sources of CP violation, a calling card of this class of models. We present here the results of new state-of-the-art analyses of the A2HDM where, in particular, we ascertain whether current data allows the A2HDM to accommodate extra scalars lighter than the 125 GeV Higgs boson. To this effect, we make use of theoretical constraints, bounds from Higgs searches at the LHC and LEP, electroweak precision observables, and a set of flavour observables, all globally combined within HEPfit, a software with a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to statistical inference. The Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM), which provides a rich and very interesting phenomenology. To remove the undesirable flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), an additional $\mathcal Z_2$ symmetry is usually imposed into the 2HDM. However, FCNCs can be avoided in a much more general way by assuming a similar Yukawa structure for the two scalar doublets. But one can circumvent the issue of FCNCs by assuming similar Yukawa structure for the two scalar doublets too. The model with this intriguing feature is termed the Aligned Two Higgs Doublet Model (A2HDM). The phenomenological constraints on the A2HDM are much weaker than the ones on the usual $\mathcal Z_2$ models, opening a broader range of possible scenarios. Moreover, the A2HDM also provides a generic framework to study, as particular cases, the different varieties of $\mathcal Z_2$-symmetric 2HDMs. Here, we illustrate a global fit of the A2HDM using the package HEPfit. We study the possibility of having new scalar particles lighter than the SM Higgs. For this global fit we perform a Bayesian analysis, including stability and perturbativity bounds, flavour and electroweak precision observables, and scalar (and pseudoscalar) searches at LEP and LHC., Comment: Proceeding for ICHEP2024

Significant discrepancies between the different determinations of the Cabibbo angle have been observed. Here, we point out that this "Cabibbo-angle anomaly" can be explained by lepton flavour universality (LFU) violating New Physics (NP) in the neutrino sector. However, modified neutrino couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons also affect many other observables sensitive to LFU violation, which have to be taken into account in order to assess the viability of this explanation. Therefore, we perform a model-independent Bayesian global analysis and find that non-zero modifications of electron and muon neutrino couplings are preferred at more than $99.99\%\,{\rm C.L.}$ (corresponding to more than $4\,\sigma$). Our results show that constructive effects in the muon sector are necessary, meaning simple models with right-handed neutrinos are discarded and more sophisticated NP models required., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, proceedings for LHCP2020

$\texttt{HEPfit}$ is a flexible open-source tool which, given the Standard Model or any of its extensions, allows to $\textit{i)}$ fit the model parameters to a given set of experimental observables; $\textit{ii)}$ obtain predictions for observables. $\texttt{HEPfit}$ can be used either in Monte Carlo mode, to perform a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of a given model, or as a library, to obtain predictions of observables for a given point in the parameter space of the model, allowing $\texttt{HEPfit}$ to be used in any statistical framework. In the present version, around a thousand observables have been implemented in the Standard Model and in several new physics scenarios. In light of the very recent updates on the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ measurements from the LHCb and Belle collaborations, we systematically explore here imprints of New Physics in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^- $ transitions using the language of effective field theories. We focus on effects that violate Lepton Flavour Universality both in the Weak Effective Theory and in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. In the Weak Effective Theory we find a preference for scenarios with the simultaneous presence of two operators, a left-handed quark current with vector muon coupling and a right-handed quark current with axial muon coupling, irrespective of the treatment of hadronic uncertainties. In the Standard Model Effective Field Theory we select different scenarios according to the treatment of hadronic effects: while an aggressive estimate of hadronic uncertainties points to the simultaneous presence of two operators, one with left-handed quark and muon couplings and one with left-handed quark and right-handed muon couplings, a more conservative treatment of hadronic matrix elements leaves room for a broader set of scenarios, including the one involving only the purely left-handed operator with muon coupling., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. Motivated by the persisting 'anomaly' in the measurement of $P_5^\prime$, we review hadronic uncertainties entering the angular observables of the decay $\bar B\to {\bar K}^*\mu^+\mu^-$. We argue that hadronic uncertainties could account for the present measurements. We discuss how to extract information on the non-factorizable hadronic contribution from experimental data exploiting its $q^2$ dependence and propose a parametrization optimized for this purpose. While no clear conclusion can be drawn with present experimental uncertainties, we show that future measurements should be able to pin down many hadronic parameters that we define in our parametrization., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Within the standard approach of effective field theory of weak interactions for $\Delta B = 1$ transitions, we look for possibly unexpected subtle New Physics effects, here dubbed "flavourful Easter eggs". We perform a Bayesian global fit using the publicly available HEPfit package, taking into account state-of-the-art experimental information concerning these processes, including the suggestive measurements from LHCb of $R_{K}$ and $R_{K^{*}}$, the latter available only very recently. We parametrize New Physics contributions to $b \to s$ transitions in terms of shifts of Wilson coefficients of the electromagnetic dipole and semi-leptonic operators, assuming CP-conserving effects, but allowing in general for violation of lepton flavour universality. We show how optimistic/conservative hadronic estimates can impact quantitatively the size of New Physics extracted from the fit. With a conservative approach to hadronic uncertainties we find nonzero New Physics contributions to Wilson coefficients at the level of $\sim 3\sigma$, depending on the model chosen. Furthermore, given the interplay between hadronic contributions and New Physics effects in the leptonic vector current, a scenario with nonstandard leptonic axial currents is comparable to the more widely advocated one with New Physics in the leptonic vector current., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures and 5 tables. v2: numerical results and plots replaced with higher statistics MC runs, references added. v3: final version to appear in EPJC

In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the RGE imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also show that this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a $Z_3 \times Z^\prime_3$ flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar mediated FCNC arise, but are naturally suppressed by the smallness of light quark masses.
