Abstract

As robot numbers in the home increase, creating a market for second-hand robotic systems is essential to reduce the waste impact of the industry. Via a survey, consumer attitudes of United Kingdom participants towards secondhand robots were investigated; finding that second-hand robots with guarantees have an equal purchasing interest compared to new systems, highlighting the opportunity for manufacturers and retailers to develop certification standards for second-hand robots to move towards a circular economy. Consumer demographics also demonstrated that those most open to the purchase of both new and second-hand systems were women, those aged 18-25 years old, and those who have previously owned a robot for the home. Participants' prior ownership of second-hand electronic devices (such as phones and laptops) did not affect rates of interest for second-hand robotic systems suggesting that the technology is still too new for people to be able to project their experience of current second-hand electronics to that of a robot. Additionally, this research found the robotics industry can consider the potential market for second-hand robots to be more similar to the second-hand smartphone market than to the household electronics market, and lessons learnt from the concerns raised by consumers for other internet-enabled electronic devices are similar to those concerns for second-hand robots. This provides an opportunity for the industry to break down the barriers for a circular economy earlier in the technology maturity process than has been seen for other electronics. Abstract

Background and aims: Opioids are now the most cited class in fatal overdoses. However, the antidote for opioid overdose—naloxone—is not always readily available. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of naloxone transit via drone to provide rapid access at the point of care. Methods and findings: Real‐world data pertaining to opioid overdoses, which occurred in the Teesside area of the UK 2015–2019, were extracted from the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths (NPSAD). The original locations of these opioid overdoses were used to compare the projected response times of ambulances with that of drones when considering the impacts of actual traffic and weather conditions, respectively; 58 cases were identified where a bystander—who could have called for and administered emergency naloxone—was likely present. Results: In 78% of cases (n = 45/58) a class C1 commercial‐off‐the‐shelf drone carrying naloxone could have reached the overdose location in 7 min—the benchmark time for the arrival of emergency services for Category 1 calls in England. With the implementation of recent advances in drone engineering, such as increased speeds and temperature‐controlled cargo cradles, it is estimated that 98% of overdoses could have been reached in this timeframe (n = 57/58). Ambulances were able to reach a significantly lower number of cases in 7 min, even when considering best‐case scenario traffic conditions (14%, n = 8/58, χ2P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study provides proof‐of‐concept that, in the Teesside area of the UK, drones are more likely than ambulance to get naloxone to the site of an opioid overdose in 7 min. Abstract

In The Rhetoric and Medicalization of Pregnancy and Childbirth in Horror Films, Courtney Patrick-Weber argues that the medicalization of pregnancy and childbirth traumatizes pregnant people in a number of ways, even as many people believe the shift toward medicalization has improved conditions for pregnant people. Patrick-Weber analyzes a selection of horror films, including The Void and Black Christmas, to demonstrate not only evidence of this trauma on a visceral level, but also how horror films can reflect and contribute to cultural conversations surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. While horror films are often neglected as vital sources of intellect and analysis, many of these films use their subversive viewpoints on cultural issues to offer a unique perspective that can ultimately help to shape the way society views them. Patrick-Weber reminds us that pregnancy and childbirth can be traumatic events, both physically and emotionally, as she discusses the current conversations surrounding the issue and critiques the “advancement” of medicalization. Scholars of film studies, gender studies, rhetoric, and medicine may find this book particularly useful.
