Red Blood Cells flowing in a microchannel undergo dispersion in the flow direction due to the non-uniform velocity profile while transverse migration due to cell-wall interactions tends to focus them along the center line. This results in a dispersion of RBC transit times through a capillary that is directly related to their transverse migration properties. By analogy with the Taylor-Aris problem, we present an experimental method to characterise this phenomenon by injecting pulses of red blood cells and measuring the evolution of their length along the channel, and varying mechanical parameters such as RBC deformability and fluid viscosity. Collapse of lipidic ultrasound contrast agents under high-frequency compressive load has been historically interpreted by the vanishing of surface tension. By contrast, buckling of elastic shells is known to occur when costly compressible stress is released through bending. Through quasi-static compression experiments on lipidic shells, we analyze the buckling events in the framework of classical elastic buckling theory and deduce the mechanical characteristics of these shells. They are then compared to that obtained through acoustic characterization.

Lift forces are widespread in hydrodynamics. These are typically observed for big and fast objects, and are often associated with a combination of fluid inertia (i.e. large Reynolds numbers) and specific symmetry-breaking mechanisms. In contrast, the properties of viscosity-dominated (i.e. low Reynolds numbers) flows make it more difficult for such lift forces to emerge. However, the inclusion of boundary effects qualitatively changes this picture. Indeed, in the context of soft and biological matter, recent studies have revealed the emergence of novel lift forces generated by boundary softness, flow gradients and/or surface charges. The aim of the present review is to gather and analyse this corpus of literature, in order to identify and unify the questioning within the associated communities, and pave the way towards future research.

We present an experimental study of the rheology and structure of a confined suspension of deformable particles flowing in a quasi-two-dimensional Poiseuille flow. Thanks to a precise microfluidic viscosimetry technique combined with measurements of concentration profiles, our study provides the first experimental confirmation {with three-dimensional particles} of a strong relationship between structuring effects and rheology, previously only reported in numerical simulations of purely two-dimensional systems. In conditions where strong structuring effects take place due to confinement, the evolution of the effective viscosity with particle concentration (here, red blood cells) shows a remarkable succession of ranges of rapid growth and plateaus that are associated to qualitative transitions in the structure of the suspension.

We explore the intrinsic dynamics of spherical shells immersed in a fluid in the vicinity of their buckled state, through experiments and 3D axisymmetric simulations. The results are supported by a theoretical model that accurately describes the buckled shell as a two-variable-only oscillator. We quantify the effective "softening" of shells above the buckling threshold, as observed in recent experiments on interactions between encapsulated microbubbles and acoustic waves. The main dissipation mechanism in the neighboring fluid is also evidenced.

We performed dynamic pressure buckling experiments on defect-seeded spherical shells made of a common silicone elastomer. Unlike in quasi-static experiments, shells buckled at ostensibly subcritical pressures (i.e. below the experimentally-determined load at which buckling occurs elastically), often following a significant time delay. While emphasizing the close connections to elastic shell buckling, we rely on viscoelasticity to explain our observations. In particular, we demonstrate that the lower critical load may be determined from the material properties, which is rationalized by a simple analogy to elastic spherical shell buckling. We then introduce a model centered on empirical quantities to show that viscoelastic creep deformation lowers the critical load in the same predictable, quantifiable way that a growing defect would in an elastic shell. This allows us to capture how both the critical deflection and the delay time depend on the applied pressure, material properties, and defect geometry. These quantities are straightforward to measure in experiments. Thus, our work not only provides intuition for viscoelastic behavior from an elastic shell buckling perspective, but also offers an accessible pathway to introduce tunable, time-controlled actuation to existing mechanical actuators, e.g. pneumatic grippers., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the relationship between pre-buckling and post-buckling states as a function of shell properties, within the deflation process of shells of an isotropic material. With an original and low-cost set-up that allows to measure simultaneously volume and pressure, elastic shells whose relative thicknesses span on a broad range are deflated until they buckle. We characterize the post-buckling state in the pressure-volume diagram, but also the relaxation toward this state. The main result is that before as well as after the buckling, the shells behave in a way compatible with predictions generated through thin shell assumption, and that this consistency persists for shells where the thickness reaches up to 0.3 the shell's midsurface radius.

An exhaustive description of the dynamics under shear flow of a large number of red blood cells in dilute regime is proposed, which highlights and takes into account the dispersion in cell properties within a given blood sample. Physiological suspending fluid viscosity is considered, a configuration surprisingly seldom considered in experimental studies, as well as a more viscous fluid that is a reference in the literature. Stable and unstable flipping motions well described by Jeffery orbits or modified Jeffery orbits are identified, as well as transitions to and from tank-treading motion in the more viscous suspending fluid case. Hysteresis loops upon shear rate increase or decrease are highlighted for the transitions between unstable and stable orbits as well as for the transition between flipping and tank-treading. We identify which of the characteristic parameters of motion and of the transition thresholds depend on flow stress only or also on suspending fluid viscosity.

Flux of rigid or soft particles (such as drops, vesicles, red blood cells, etc.) in a channel is a complex function of particle concentration, which depends on the details of induced dissipation and suspension structure due to hydrodynamic interactions with walls or between neighboring particles. Through two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations and a simple model that reveals the contribution of the main characteristics of the flowing suspension, we discuss the existence of an optimal volume fraction for cell transport and its dependence on the cell mechanical properties. The example of blood is explored in detail, by adopting the commonly used modeling of red blood cells dynamics. We highlight the complexity of optimization at the level of a network, due to the antagonist evolution of local volume fraction and optimal volume fraction with the channels diameter. In the case of the blood network, the most recent results on the size evolution of vessels along the circulatory network of healthy organs suggest that the red blood cell volume fraction (hematocrit) of healthy subjects is close to optimality, as far as transport only is concerned. Optimal hematocrit $H_o$ maximizes oxygen transport. In healthy humans, the average hematocrit $H$ is in the range of 40-45$\%$, but it can significantly change in blood pathologies such as severe anemia (low $H$) and polycythemia (high $H$). Whether the hematocrit level in humans corresponds to the optimal one is a long standing physiological question. Here, using numerical simulations with the Lattice Boltzmann method and two mechanical models of the red blood cell (RBC) we predict the optimal hematocrit, and explore how altering the mechanical properties of RBCs affects $H_o$. We develop a simplified analytical theory that accounts for results obtained from numerical simulations and provides insight into the physical mechanisms determining $H_o$. Our numerical and analytical models can easily be modified to incorporate a wide range of mechanical properties of RBCs as well as other soft particles thereby providing means for the rational design of blood substitutes. Our work lays the foundations for systematic theoretical study of the optimal hematocrit and its link with pathological RBCs associated with various diseases (e.g. sickle cell anemia, diabetes mellitus, malaria, elliptocytosis).

We present experiments on RBCs that flow through microcapillaries under physiological conditions. We show that the RBC clusters form as a subtle imbrication between hydrodynamics interaction and adhesion forces because of plasma proteins. Clusters form along the capillaries and macromolecule-induced adhesion contribute to their stability. However, at high yet physiological flow velocities, shear stresses overcome part of the adhesion forces, and cluster stabilization due to hydrodynamics becomes stronger. For the case of pure hydrodynamic interaction, cell-to-cell distances have a pronounced bimodal distribution. Partitioning of red blood cells (RBCs) at the level of bifurcations in the microcirculatory system affects many physiological functions yet it remains poorly understood. We address this problem by using T-shaped microfluidic bifurcations as a model. Our computer simulations and in vitro experiments reveal that the hematocrit ($\phi_0$) partition depends strongly on RBC deformability, as long as $\phi_0 <20$% (within the normal range in microcirculation), and can even lead to complete deprivation of RBCs in a child branch. Furthermore, we discover a deviation from the Zweifach-Fung effect which states that the child branch with lower flow rate recruits less RBCs than the higher flow rate child branch. At small enough $\phi_0$, we get the inverse scenario, and the hematocrit in the lower flow rate child branch is even higher than in the parent vessel. We explain this result by an intricate up-stream RBC organization and we highlight the extreme dependence of RBC transport on geometrical and cell mechanical properties. The hydrodynamic interaction of two deformable vesicles in shear flow induces a net displacement, in most cases an increase of their distance in the transverse direction. The statistical average of these interactions leads to shear-induced diffusion in the suspension, both at the level of individual particles which experience a random walk made of successive interactions, and at the level of suspension where a non-linear down-gradient diffusion takes place, an important ingredient in the structuring of suspension flows. We make an experimental and computational study of the interaction of a pair of lipid vesicles in shear flow by varying physical parameters, and investigate the decay of the net lateral displacement with the distance between the streamlines on which the vesicles are initially located. This decay and its dependency upon vesicle properties can be accounted for by a simple model based on the well established law for the lateral drift of a vesicle in the vicinity of a wall. In the semi-dilute regime, a determination of self-diffusion coefficients is presented.

The distribution of Red Blood Cells in a confined channel flow is inhomogeneous and shows a marked depletion near the walls due to a competition between migration away from the walls and shear-induced diffusion resulting from interactions between particles. We investigated the lift of RBCs in a shear flow near a wall and measured a significant lift velocity despite the tumbling motion of cells. We also provide values for the collective and anisotropic shear-induced diffusion of a cloud of RBCs, both in the direction of shear and in the direction of vorticity. Pinched flow fractionation is shown to be an efficient and selective way to quickly separate particles by size in a very polydisperse semi-concentrated suspension. Soft bodies flowing in a channel often exhibit parachute-like shapes usually attributed to an increase of hydrodynamic constraint (viscous stress and/or confinement). We show that the presence of a fluid membrane leads to the reverse phenomenon and build a phase diagram of shapes --- which are classified as bullet, croissant and parachute --- in channels of varying aspect ratio. Unexpectedly, shapes are relatively wider in the narrowest direction of the channel. The problem of the splitting of a suspension in bifurcating channels dividing into two branches of non equal flow rates is addressed. As observed for long, in particular in blood flow studies, the volume fraction of particles generally increases in the high flow rate branch and decreases in the other one. In the literature, this phenomenon is sometimes interpreted as the result of some attraction of the particles towards this high flow rate branch. In this paper, we focus on the existence of such an attraction through microfluidic experiments and two-dimensional simulations and show clearly that such an attraction does not occur but is, on the contrary, directed towards the low flow rate branch. Arguments for this attraction are given and a discussion on the sometimes misleading arguments found in the literature is proposed. The dynamics of a vesicle suspension in a shear flow between parallel plates has been investigated under microgravity conditions, where vesicles are only submitted to hydrodynamic effects such as lift forces due to the presence of walls and drag forces. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the vesicles has been recorded thanks to digital holographic microscopy, during parabolic flights and under normal gravity conditions. The collected data demonstrates that vesicles are pushed away from the walls with a lift velocity proportional to $\dot{\gamma} R^3/z^2$ where $\dot{\gamma}$ is the shear rate, $R$ the vesicle radius and $z$ its distance from the wall. This scaling as well as the dependence of the lift velocity upon vesicle aspect ratio are consistent with theoretical predictions by Olla [J. Phys. The influence of local order on the disordering scenario of small Wigner islands is discussed. A first disordering step is put in evidence by the time correlation functions and is linked to individual excitations resulting in configuration transitions, which are very sensitive to the local symmetries. This is followed by two other transitions, corresponding to orthoradial and radial diffusion, for which both individual and collective excitations play a significant role. Finally, we show that, contrary to large systems, the focus that is commonly made on collective excitations for such small systems through the Lindemann criterion has to be made carefully in order to clearly identify the relative contributions in the whole disordering process., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Cross-streamline non-inertial migration of a vesicle in a bounded Poiseuille flow is investigated experimentally and numerically. The combined effects of the walls and of the curvature of the velocity profile induce a movement towards the center of the channel. A migration law (as a function of relevant structural and flow parameters) is proposed that is consistent with experimental and numerical results. This similarity law markedly differs from its analogue in unbounded geometry. The dependency on the reduced volume $\nu$ and viscosity ratio $\lambda$ is also discussed. Mobility properties inside and around degenerate domains of an elastic lattice partially pinned on a square array of traps are explored by means of a fully controllable model system of macroscopic particles. We focus on the different configurations obtained for filling ratios equal to 1 or 2 when the pinning strength is lowered. These theoretically expected but never observed configurations are degenerated, which implies the existence of a multidomain crystal. We show that the distinction between trapped and untrapped particles that is made in the case of strong pinning is not relevant for such a weaker pinning. Indeed, one ought to distinguish between particles inside or around the domains associated to positional degeneracies. We show that the diffusion of a single file of particles moving in a fluctuating modulated 1D channel is enhanced with respect to the one in a bald pipe. This effect, induced by the fluctuations of the modulation, is favored by the incommensurability between the channel potential modulation and the moving file periodicity. This phenomenon could be of importance in order to optimize the critical current in superconductors, in particular in the case where mobile vortices move in 1D channels designed by adapted patterns of pinning sites., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
