By analysing the dynamics of neoliberalism through a Polanyian lens, this article illustrates the complexities and consequences of neoliberalism in the Turkish context. It examines the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey as a manifestation of 'embedded neoliberalism'. The article delves into the AKP's ascent to power, its consolidation of authority, and, most notably, its subsequent shift towards authoritarianism and interventionism. It traces the evolution of the AKP's governance, highlighting its trajectory from a period of 'soft embeddedness' to 'authoritarian embeddedness'. During the 'soft embeddedness' phase (2002–2013), the AKP implemented neoliberal policies alongside improved access to credit and social programmes. However, as global economic conditions deteriorated and the contradictions of neoliberalism intensified by 2013, the phase of 'authoritarian embeddedness' ensued. This phase not only entailed overtly authoritarian politics but also witnessed an escalation of state interventionism in the economy further contributing to the crisis of the economy and state. A forward run-up and stepping are used to accelerate hitting tools or throwing objects in sports. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a forward cross-over step on the speed of a hitting tool by analyzing the joint work and mechanical energy of the whole body and the hitting tool using inverse dynamics. Thirteen advanced tennis players performed forehand groundstrokes at maximum effort with and without a forward cross-over step. From the whole body plus racket perspective, the body-weight-normalized mechanical energy at the start of the hitting motion increased by 1.74 ± 0.42 J·kg-1 due to the cross-over step. However, the increase in the magnitude of total negative joint work, primarily attributed to the lower limbs, was 1.38 ± 0.31 J·kg-1 due to the cross-over step, conventionally regarded as energy absorption. Consequently, the mechanical energy of the whole body plus the racket at ball impact was comparable between the conditions. Nevertheless, from the segmental perspective, the mechanical work performed by the net shoulder joint force of the playing upper limb with the cross-over step during the hitting motion was greater than that without the crossover step. Subsequently, the slight increase in the mechanical energy of the playing upper limb plus racket (0.25 ± 0.21 J·kg-1) resulted in increased racket speed (4.3%). Considering the comparable total mechanical energy and a resultant increase in racket speed, players and coaches should not overestimate the effect of the forward step on racket speed. This article argues that scholarship on Polanyi’s double movement thesis has been disembedded from the arguments laid out by Polanyi in The Great Transformation. Much scholarship claims ideologically left- or right-wing movements to be examples of Polanyi’s countermovement. This article will demonstrate this is a misreading through a detailed examination of Polanyi’s magnus opus. It will demonstrate that Polanyi not only does not regard ideological movements as part of the countermovement concept but he ridicules this understanding as the ‘myth of the antiliberal collectivist conspiracy’. After dissecting the double movement dynamic this article will use the findings to intervene in the Goodwin-Sandbrook debate arguing for a non-ideological reading of the countermovement, in which the countermovement is ultimately destructive to the self-regulating market and the double movement itself. In this article, we develop and test three propositions related to the status of a primary counterpoint of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement—"Blue Lives Matter" (BlueLM). Employing correlational and causal analyses on a wide array of data, including public opinion, news and social media, internet searches, and merchandise sales, our findings are threefold: first, we offer evidence that Whiteness is associated with attitudinal and behavioral indicators of support for BlueLM; second, we present evidence that support for BlueLM is systematically linked to White racial prejudice; and third, we demonstrate that BlueLM activity is caused by BLM protest following a high-profile police killing of a Black man, which comports with the conceptualization of BlueLM as engaging in a process of "competitive victimhood" against BLM. Together, these findings suggest that BlueLM is a new incarnation of an ongoing history of White countermobilization against organized Black claims-making activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high load resistance training using barbell half squats compared with trap bar deadlifts on maximal strength, power performance, and lean mass in recreationally active females. Methods Twenty-two recreationally active female participants (age: 26.9 ± 7.7 yrs.; height: 166.0 ± 5.1 cm; weight: 68.6 ± 9.9 kg) were randomly assigned to either a barbell half squat group (SG: n = 10) or trap bar deadlift group (DG: n = 12). Training consisted of twice-weekly sessions for eight weeks. Both groups completed one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing for both barbell half squat and trap bar deadlift groups. Countermovement jump (CMJ) and sprint performance were also assessed. Total body (TBLM) and leg lean mass (LLM) were measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Between-group differences were analysed using analysis of covariance. Results SG tended to improve 1RM half squat (21.0 ± 11.5 kg vs. 13.1 ± 7.5 kg) more than DG (mean difference (MD): 8.0 kg, 95% CI: -0.36 – 16.3 kg). A similar pattern in favour of DG (18.4 ± 11.2 vs. 11.7 ± 8.1 kg) compared to SG was observed (MD: 6.5 kg, 95% CI: -2.5 – 15.6 kg). No between-group differences for sprint, jump or lean body mass changes was observed. For groups combined, the following changes in CMJ (2.0 ± 2.4 cm), 5-m sprint (-0.020 ± 0.039 s), 15-m sprint (-0.055 ± 0.230 s), TBLM (0.84 ± 1.12 kg), and LLM (0.27 ± 0.59 kg) was observed. Conclusions An exercise intervention consisting of half squats or trap bar deadlift were associated with improved muscle strength, power, and lean mass. Our findings suggests that in recreationally active females, exercise selection is less of a concern provided that heavy loads are applied, and relevant muscle groups are targeted.

This article clarifies the use of Polanyian theory to interrogate rural China's historical trajectory. It critiques the use of Polanyi's double movement concept to analyse state-socialist periods arguing that because the double movement concept was explicitly created to interrogate capitalist systems, in which land and labour were marketized, it cannot be transposed onto state-socialist periods. This article further argues that as the double movement necessarily entails the possibility of transcending a capitalist system to socialism, the double movement's explanatory power is further undermined when used within a state-socialist context. This includes the context of Maoist China which this article explores. This article suggests using the vocabulary Polanyi employs when discussing Soviet Russia to interrogate the Maoist period. However, it supports the use of Polanyi's double movement concept to interrogate post-1984 China as this period demonstrates increasing market penetration of society. The article further argues that when using the double movement to interrogate any system with significant market penetration scholars ought recognise the double movement's dialectical process. This dialectical reading suggests the double movement is destructive to society and its internal contradiction creates progressive and regressive possibilities. In this introduction we map the tradition of thoughts and state of the art on the study of finance and financialization in relation to the anthropological Italian debate. We suggest a particular attention towards ethnographic approaches "from the margins" of finance that can help build a non unilinear and west-centric agenda for studying financial expansion also in the Italian context. Then we discuss conceptual trends on financial expansion that emerged in the international anthropological debate after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), underlining a shift from the "double movement" analysis to the rediscovery and the reframing of relational approach. Thinking of financialization beyond the dualistic interpretative prism that sets finance against society, movement against counter movement, center against periphery we invite to conceptualize financial expansion as the result of a variety of independent but related processes which must be apprehended holistically. We consider ethnography as an opportunity to unravel the multiple spatial and temporal axes and kinds of processes that constitute financial expansion. When analyzed ethnographically, financialization seems to proceed by simultaneous movements and countermovement resulting from the confrontation among increasingly financialized subjects. It has also been employed in the rehabilitation process following Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries and for multi-directional training purposes. This study investigated by means of the SpeedCourt system determines 1) whether there is any difference in COD parameters and countermovement jumps (CMJ) between United Arab Emirates (UAE) and non-UAE professional footballers 2) whether there is any difference between the two lower limbs during change-of-direction manoeuvres.Methodology: This analysis included 100 professional football players from UAE or Non-UAE football clubs who were tested at FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. With the help of Speedcourt system, 6-s tapping, countermovement jump (CMJ) and chase 15-s tests were performed. Comparison was done between UAE and non-UAE footballers and also between the dominant and non-dominant sides.Results: Out of the 100 players, 83 players were right foot dominant. Apart from the countermovement jump test, there was no significant difference in results between UAE and non-UAE football players. Average time to turn for dominant and non-dominant sides did not show any significant difference, for either group.Conclusion: There is no difference in 6-s tapping, Chase 15-s tests or limb asymmetry amongst UAE and Non-UAE footballers. However, the non-UAE footballers showed significantly better performance in Countermovement Jump Test. The data provide baseline values for forthcoming sports medicine research, which can be taken into account when creating injury prevention or return-to-sport protocols, particularly with regard to change of direction parameters and countermovement jump.Keywords: Speedcourt, rehabilitation, prevention, countermovement

This article focuses on the alimony contesters in Turkey, who are a part of the online antifeminist countermovement. The alimony contesters' movement is significant because, even though they are small in numbers, they successfully leveraged support from pro‐government media organizations and journalists in the broader context of the authoritarian media atmosphere in Turkey. The media support, and the fact that their discourse is in parallel with Turkey's authoritarian government's policies on women and gender, helped them break the walls of their echo chambers and shape the public discourse. The aim of the study is to use a three‐step methodology to figure out alimony contesters' hybrid media strategy to stimulate the public debate and influence news framing and editorial choices by building relationships with pro‐government journalists and news outlets. The study demonstrates that the demands of a small group that is organized on social media and has limited followers can be presented as the public will if it receives sufficient support from politics and the media. Movement-countermovement dynamics have frequently been examined under the lenses of resource mobilization theory and political opportunity theory. This article develops a relational perspective, which is implicit in previous works and complementary to existing perspectives, to analyze how an initially weak countermovement expands and defeats its stronger opponent. The movement's strength is not determined by its internal characteristics, but is contextually defined by its relationship with opponents. A countermovement gains ground by strategically targeting the opposing movement's vulnerabilities. This article examines the emergence of Taiwan's pro-nuclear movement in 2013 and how it succeeded in a 2018 referendum by abolishing a planned nuclear phase-out deadline. Taiwan's environmentalists' diffuse concerns, adoption of institutional channels after the 2016 transition of power, and insufficient attention to the climate change issue were all extensively exploited by pro-nuclear activists. As such, Taiwan's pro-nuclear activists gained ground not because of their strength, but because of skilled exploitation of the weakness of their rivals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of tendon elastic energy and electromyographic activity patterns (ratio of pre-landing to concentric: mEMG PLA/CON; ratio of eccentric to concentric; mEMG ECC/CON) on jump performance. Twenty-nine males performed five kinds of unilateral jumps using only ankle joint (no-countermovement jump: noCMJ; countermovement jump: CMJ; drop jumps at 10, 20 and 30 cm drop height: DJ10, DJ20 and DJ30). Jumping height, pre-stretch augmentation and electromyographic activity of the plantar flexor muscles were measured. The elastic energy of the Achilles tendon was measured during isometric contractions. Relative tendon elastic energy (to body mass) was highly correlated with jumping heights of CMJ, DJ10 and DJ20 but not with noCMJ and DJ30, whereas that was significantly correlated with pre-stretch augmentation in CMJ, but not with three DJs. The mEMG PLA/CON was significantly correlated with the pre-stretch augmentation of DJ20 and DJ30, but not with DJ10, whereas the mEMG ECC/CON was significantly correlated with the pre-stretch augmentation of DJ20 and DJ30, but not with CMJ and DJ10. These results suggested that jumping exercises with low pre-stretch intensity benefited from tendon elastic energy, but those with high pre-stretch intensity benefited from electromyographic activity patterns. In 2019, Taiwan became the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage (SSM). This article considers the social movement strategies and relational dynamics of three activist groups in the year leading to the landmark SSM legislation, respectively representing the "yes," "no," and "alternative" agendas in the public debates and social mobilization around the issue of equal marriage rights. Through a critical study of the three cases, this article examines how various campaigners shaped local SSM discourses and mobilized people to support, oppose, and question marriage equality, focusing on their social mobilization strategies and inter-group relational dynamics under Taiwan's political and legal structures. Since the emergence of neoliberalism, the power of multinational corporations has dramatically grown. Given the limits of 'self-regulation' (e.g. Corporate Social Responsibility), this paper examines the attempt to develop a regime of 'public governance' rooted in law-based regulation. The focus is on a referendum voted in 2020 that aimed at regulating Swiss-based multinational corporations. This case is interesting for two reasons. First, Switzerland hosts among the biggest multinational corporations in the world; changing regulations in Switzerland thus implies modifying the rules of globalization as a whole. Second, while corporations are often accused of directly influencing the political agenda through lobby or corruption, in this case citizens were endowed with the power to change the rules for these corporations. While the proposal was finally rejected, the referendum campaign allows reflection on the interplay between globalization and national democratic politics and on the possibilities and difficulties of developing alternative forms of globalization. Ever since climate change became a political issue in the late 1980s, a number of industry coalitions have formed to oppose mandatory carbon emissions reductions. One key coalition was the Global Climate Coalition (GCC). This paper conducts a historical and empirical review of the activities of this coalition. This review shows that the GCC engaged in four distinct activities to obstruct climate action: 1) monitoring and contesting climate science, 2) commissioning and utilizing economic studies to amplify and legitimate their arguments, 3) shifting the cultural understanding of climate change through public relations campaigns and 4) conducting aggressive lobbying of political elites. Through these activities, the GCC played an important role in obstructing climate action, both in the U.S. and internationally. Further analysis of similar coalitions can aid in our understanding of the organized opposition to climate action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores protest mobilizations related to the 2015 migrant crisis in the post-communist Czech Republic and Slovakia. Despite dominating anti-refugee sentiments and similar historical and political background in the two countries, the mobilization patterns were fairly different in both scale and organization of migration-related mobilizations. To systematically explore and account for these variances, we investigate the short-term political conditions, focusing on 1) key features of the national political environment – discursive opportunities and political space, and 2) movement/countermovement dynamics. We build on the original protest event data during the most intense protests over migration in 2015. We show how a different political space and a different extent of openness of discursive opportunities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and interactions between the anti-refugee movement and the solidarity countermovement played an important role in the timing and scale of protests and their organizers. A network of organizations working to oppose climate action, called the climate change countermovement (CCCM), has long been a critical yet highly opaque subject of study for social scientists concerned with climate politics. We leverage a new combined dataset of boards of directors, financial contributions, and texts produced by CCCM members to characterize its sources of support and social structure. We show that foundations tend to make more frequent and larger donations to CCCM nonprofits when they are linked through a board member. We also show that CCCM nonprofits which are more distant from each other in the social network of board members produce different climate change discourses. Community detection methods robustly detect three communities within the CCCM: conservative think tanks (CTT), oil and gas trade associations, and utility, coal, and manufacturing trade associations, each with unique goals within the countermovement. The findings suggest that the climate countermovement is an interface among these communities which together ensure that climate action obstruction is achieved on different but complementary fronts, through both discursive and more concrete policy efforts. This paper also introduces a new way of understanding organized climate obstruction and makes significant methodological contributions in the study of social movements and countermovements.

Introduction. Countermovement jump is common in sport and testing and performed from various starting positions. Little is known about effective contributors to maximal countermovement jump height from various starting positions. Purpose and Objectives. Determine effective jump height predictors and effect of starting position on countermovement jump height. Applied Methodology. Forty-nine collegiate athletes performed maximal height countermovement jumps from upright and squatting positions with arm movement. Several variables were calculated from kinetic data. Correlation and regression determined variables related to and predictive of jump height in both conditions. Paired t-tests evaluated differences in jump height. Achieved Major Results. Upright condition jump height positively correlated with peak force and power, eccentric and concentric impulses, and countermovement depth. Jump height prediction included peak force and power, and eccentric and concentric impulses. Squat condition jump height positively correlated with peak force and power, mean rate of force development, force generated at the beginning of propulsion, and concentric impulse. Jump height prediction equation included mean rate of force development, force at the beginning of propulsion, and peak power. Jump height was higher in the upright condition. Conclusions. Higher jumps are achieved from the upright position. Peak force, peak power, and concentric and eccentric impulses best contribute to upright jump height. Mean rate of force development, force at the beginning of propulsion, and peak power best predicted squat jump height. Limitations. We did not restrict arm movement, to encourage natural motion. Depth was not controlled, rather advising a comfortable depth. Subjects were recruited from various collegiate sports. Practical implications. Maximal jump height from various positions may be achieved through efforts to maximize jump peak power and increase musculotendinous loading in sport-specific starting positions. Originality/Value. This is the first study to explore the predictors of upright and squat countermovement jumps. These results can guide jump performance training.

A countermovement jump (CMJ) is common in sport and often time-constrained. Little is known about contributors to quickness in jumps. This study examined effective predictors of time to take-off and effects of the starting position on reaction time and take-off time in a countermovement jump performed for quickness from upright and squat positions. Forty-nine collegiate athletes performed CMJs for quickness from upright and squatting starting positions to 75% of their maximal jump height. Several variables were calculated from the kinetic data related to jump performance. Correlation and multiple regression were used to determine variables related and predictive of time to take-off under both conditions. Paired t-tests evaluated differences in reaction and take-off times between conditions. In the upright condition, an increasing rate of force development and force, and decreasing time variables, impulses, and countermovement depth were associated with shorter time to take-off. The time to take-off prediction included rates of force development, force, time, and impulse. In the squat condition, shorter time to take-off was associated with lesser time variables, eccentric impulse, force at the end of the eccentric phase, and countermovement depth, and a greater rate of force development, concentric impulse, peak power, peak force, and reaction time. The time to take-off prediction equation included time to the bottom of the countermovement, time to peak force, and peak power. Reaction and take-off times were longer in the upright condition. Quick jump efficiency may be improved by strategies to increase maximum strength and the eccentric rate of force development while decreasing countermovement depth and time to bottom. In this critical ethnography, Ethan Chang investigates how white parent-activists organized an oppositional movement to ethnic studies. Drawing on critical whiteness studies, cultural studies, and studies of countermovements, he argues that these parents crafted an oppositional narrative that positioned white, Christian, American boys as victims of ethnic studies curricula. Chang then traces how the parents leveraged this narrative to forge a coalition with disability advocates and to "digitally suture," or bind, their local ethnic studies countermovement to broader right-wing populist activism. Data includes eleven months of participant observation, 146 public school board testimonies, and twenty ethnographic interviews. The article concludes with a discussion of how studies of curricular countermovements might inform scholarly and activist attempts to divest from whiteness and make ethnic studies available to all students. This article analyses conservative activism and responses to it by subnational level LGBT rights mobilization in Mexico. It studies the case of Veracruz from a perspective that integrates movement-countermovement interaction, using a process reconstruction methodology based on press analysis and in-depth interviews. Two mechanisms of movement response to counter-movement actions are identified: learning and adaptation of repertoires. These responses, which modify strategies and practices, reveal a process that has forced the LGBT movement to shift its actions from the subnational to the national level, given the high veto capacity of conservative activism to limit reforms and changes in Mexican states.

Inequities in access to water across economic classes and social groups have been aggravated by the commodification of ecosystems. Institutional governance of small freshwater bodies, like ponds, is under tremendous stress and often cannot cope with increasing pressures from market forces and state interventions. Recently conceptualized as a “composite resource”, ponds are vital entities in the ecological, economic, and socio-political landscape. The central objective of this study is to understand the access and utilization patterns of rural community ponds in Kerala, India, by employing a survey method. I attempt to integrate the literature on commons and political ecology, review the institutional arrangements governing rural public ponds, assess their ecological health, and situate the empirical evidence in a theoretical framework of the commons. I find universal access to these water bodies, which cuts across social and economic groups, for domestic uses such as drinking, bathing, washing, and cleaning; this utilization has a class and gender dimension. A majority of the surveyed ponds showed signs of robust ecological health in terms of total dissolved solids and pH values, functional embankments, and the absence of any polluting economic activity in their vicinity...

In a social movement study, countermovement emerges when certain movement is considered to bring threat to the status quo or the current political and social condition. Social movement seeks for changing the existing situation while the countermovement pursues to keep it. As a result, the conflict between two becomes inevitable, where both will compete to win over the other. The existence of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Indonesia (HTI) for years is responded by some Islamic groups especially Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and its allies, as threat to the Indonesian life due to the idea brought by HTI. It becomes the root of conflict between HTI and other Islamic groups in Indonesia. This article aims to explain the conflict between HTI and other Islamic groups by elaborating the effort of the Islamic groups to counter the HTI narratives and mobilization by using countermovement approach in social movement studies. This article is a case study research and using mainly secondary data to analyze the issue. This article found that Nahdlatul Ulama as the main countermovement played significant role to counter Hizb ut-Tahrir`s religious and political narratives as well as its political mobilization.

The aims of the current study were to explore the pattern of the force-velocity (F-V) relationship of leg muscles, evaluate the reliability and concurrent validity of the obtained parameters, and explore the load associated changes in the muscle work and power output. Subjects performed maximum vertical countermovement jumps with a vest ranging 0-40% of their body mass. The ground reaction force and leg joint kinematics and kinetics were recorded. The data revealed a strong and approximately linear F-V relationship (individual correlation coefficients ranged from 0.78-0.93). The relationship slopes, F- and V-intercepts, and the calculated power were moderately to highly reliable (0.67 < ICC < 0.91), while the concurrent validity F- and V-intercepts, and power with respect to the directly measured values, was (on average) moderate. Despite that a load increase was associated with a decrease in both the countermovement depth and absolute power, the absolute work done increased, as well as the relative contribution of the knee work. The obtained findings generally suggest that the loaded vertical jumps could not only be developed into a routine method for testing the capacities of leg muscles, but also reveal the mechanisms of adaptation of multijoint movements to different loading conditions. In this article, we introduce the concept of "anti-activism" and explore the possible impact of anti-activist action in Hong Kong. We define anti-activism as a form of countermovement intended to discredit, distract, and even harass activists in voluntary social movements. Our data and analyses are based on field observations, interviews, and primary documents collected in Hong Kong during 2012–2018. We focus on the case of the protest campaign against the quasi-religious group Falun Gong 法輪功 to develop our argument. We find that anti-activists do not try to win public support for their cause. Instead, they succeed most effectively through the process of disrupting and discrediting voluntary activists to arouse tension, conflict, suspicion, and annoyance in the public. They discredit not just their opponents but even themselves, and, thus by extension, they discredit social movement activism per se, polarize public debate, and in a way undermine the integrity of civil society in Hong Kong. This article analyses conservative activism and responses to it by subnational level LGBT rights mobilization in Mexico. It studies the case of Veracruz from a perspective that integrates movement-countermovement interaction, using a process reconstruction methodology based on press analysis and in-depth interviews. Two mechanisms of movement response to counter-movement actions are identified: learning and adaptation of repertoires. These responses, which modify strategies and practices, reveal a process that has forced the LGBT movement to shift its actions from the subnational to the national level, given the high veto capacity of conservative activism to limit reforms and changes in Mexican states. This article aims to overcome an impasse in current Polanyian scholarship by suggesting a new vocabulary to explain Polanyi's 'double movement' and 'countermovement' concepts – the unconscious countermovement and the conscious Polanyian movement. It argues current literature often misinterprets these core concepts, which can lead to a misunderstanding of Polanyi's general thesis. This paper uses the Carton (2018. On the Nature of the Countermovement: A Response to Stuart et al.'s 'Climate Change and the Polanyian Countermovement: Carbon Markets or Degrowth?'. New Political Economy)-Stuart et al. (2019. Climate Change and the Polanyian Counter-movement: Carbon Markets or Degrowth? New Political Economy, 24 (1), 89–102) debate on the countermovement to exemplify some of the current misapplications of the countermovement as explicitly 'anti-capitalist' (Stuart et al. 2019. Climate Change and the Polanyian Counter-movement: Carbon Markets or Degrowth? New Political Economy, 24 (1), 89–102) movements. This paper argues that in fact all countermovements, as described in The Great Transformation, are necessarily non-ideological. I argue that dialectics and consciousness are fundamental to understanding the double movement and countermovement concepts and that highlighting the conscious/unconscious dynamic within Polanyi's work helps avoid misreadings of key concepts and provides a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of Polanyi's general theory. Creating private property rights and establishing land markets were fundamental to the historical development of capitalism in the Global North and remain at the centre of capitalist development in the Global South. This article contributes to debates about these processes by analysing the relationship between land markets and indigenous peoples in Highland Ecuador. Building on Karl Polanyi's concept of fictitious commodities, it elaborates a new concept that makes an analytical distinction between the activation and development of land markets. The former refers to the occasional participation of actors in markets to secure land, whereas the latter relates to the establishment and expansion of markets that regulate the distribution and value of land through market prices. Focusing on indigenous land struggles in the late 20th century, this article shows that the activation of land markets created opportunities for indigenous peasants to secure land, whereas the development of land markets closed them down. Social and class differentiation among the highland indigenous population increased through this contradictory process. The article connects this historical analysis to recent developments in Ecuador to contribute to empirical and theoretical debates about contemporary land struggles and agrarian change elsewhere in the Global South. Problem statement. Vertical jump is an essential motor skill in many sports, especially in volleyball where the total number of jumps performed by a player during training and games is high. Lower-extremity stiffness seems to greatly affect the storage and utilization of elastic energy during stretch-shortening cycles and the rate of force development; higher levels of lower-extremity stiffness seem to be necessary for higher vertical jump height. Approach. A total of eight female volleyball players (16.00 ± 1.07 years, 166.00 ± 4.04 cm, 57.02 ± 8.73 kg) and eight female sedentary participants (15.13 ± 1.36 years, 161.13 ± 6.71 cm, 50.70 ± 5.42 kg) volunteered to participate in this study. They performed countermovement jumps with and without arm swing; kinetic variables and vertical stiffness were analyzed. Purpose. The aim of this investigation was to analyze kinetic variables and vertical stiffness of adolescent female volleyball players during a vertical jump. Results. Significant differences between volleyball players and sedentary participants were observed in flight height, maximum vertical displacement of the center of mass, acceleration impulse, average power, peak power, and vertical stiffness (p < 0.01). No significant differences were observed in average force or peak force. Female volleyball players had significantly higher values of almost all kinetic variables analyzed compared to sedentary subjects of the same age range. However, because they had greater vertical displacement of the center of mass without differences in the peak force, they showed a significantly lower vertical stiffness values. Conclusions. A specific training to increase vertical stiffness can make volleyball players more impulsive subjects and lead to better use of elastic energy during the stretch-shortening cycle, which will increase vertical jump height. Nationalism is back with a renewed force. Hungary is a virulent example of the new nationalist ascendancy. As the country was a former liberal star pupil, Hungary's neo-nationalist turn has been puzzling researchers for years. This study goes beyond the entrenched polarisations in the literature by highlighting the dynamic interplay between culture, structure and identity. It proposes to conceptualise Hungary's neo-nationalist turn as a Polanyian countermovement against commodification, globalisation and deindustrialisation. The article presents the results of a thematic analysis of 82 interviews with workers in four towns in Hungary's rustbelt and highlights how the multiscalar lived experience of commodifying reforms violated an implicit social contract and changed workers' narrative identities. In the absence of a class-based shared narrative and lacking a viable political tool to control their fate, working-class neo-nationalism emerged as a new narrative identity to express workers' anger and outrage. Studies of the pro-life movement have invariably been undertaken in relation to the pro-choice movement. The stress on comparison has tended to homogenize the two sides, thus understating their internal differences. This article extends beyond an analysis bounded by a movement―countermovement dichotomy. Based on ethnographic data and on the Italian case, it considers several questions that arise from revealing the intramovement divisions at various levels. First, there are tensions relating to the relationship between orthodoxy and institutionalized politics: how far, if at all, should there be doctrinal compromises in exchange for influence over public policy? Secondly, the conflicts over modes of action. In this respect, should protests be visible in public spaces, and if so how? These two issues govern the tense relationship between the Movimento per la Vita and more radical groups. Thirdly, the issue that divides the Movimento itself; the ongoing dialogue over the attitude to be taken towards contraception, and thus sexuality. At the heart of these intramovement struggles is the definition of what a ‘real’ pro-life movement is, and how a ‘real’ pro-life movement should mobilize. This article reveals a complex and highly fragmented image of the pro-life movement that, like every social movement of a certain size, is heterogeneous in its demographic composition, objectives and strategies. To show this complexity, the article adopts an emic approach that does not limit itself to a reading of conservative movements through the eyes of progressive movements.

An understanding of how movement competency, strength, and power interact with natural growth and maturation is required in order to determine meaningful changes with developing athletes. Isometric and dynamic testing in youth athletes provides insight into the natural development of the force‐velocity (F‐V) spectrum. Two‐hundred and six young male athletes, aged 9‐17 years of age, were grouped according to stage of maturation based on their maturity offset which was determined as number of years from peak height velocity (PHV). All participants performed the back‐squat assessment (BSA), isometric mid‐thigh pull (IMTP), countermovement jump (CMJ), and squat jump (SJ) tests. Absolute and scaled force‐time variables were collected from the IMTP, CMJ, and SJ. No significant differences were observed between maturational groups for squat movement competency (P >.05). One‐way ANOVA with Bonferroni post‐hoc analysis revealed that increasing maturity led to significant, moderate to large increases in allometrically scaled peak force (PFallo) for all tests (P <.05). Multiple stepwise linear regression models revealed IMTP PFallo significantly predicted 34.8% and 41.3% of variance in SJ and CMJ jump height, respectively (P <.05). Natural growth and maturation induces positive adaptations to movement competency as well as isometric and dynamic strength and power. Trends from the IMTP, SJ, and CMJ tests indicate the largest differences in strength, and power may occur around the adolescent growth spurt despite the large variation in rates of change within the circa‐PHV group. This article presents and empirically substantiates a theoretical account explaining the making and stabilisation of illiberal hegemony in Hungary. It combines a Polanyian institutionalist framework with a neo-Gramscian analysis of right-wing hegemonic strategy and a relational class analysis inspired by the political economy tradition in anthropology. The article identifies the social actors behind the illiberal transformation, showing how 'neoliberal disembedding' fuelled the rightward shift of constituencies who had erstwhile been brought into the fold of liberal hegemony: blue-collar workers, post-peasants and sections of domestic capital. Finally, the article describes the emergence of a new regime of accumulation and Fidesz's strategy of 'authoritarian re-embedding', which relies on 'institutional authoritarianism' and 'authoritarian populism'. This two-pronged approach has so far allowed the ruling party to stabilise illiberal hegemony, even in the face of reforms that have generated discontents and exacerbated social inequality. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the immediate and acute vertical jump performance responses throughout and following two different free-weight back squat exercise protocols. Fifteen resistance-trained women (mean ± SD: age = 21.8 ± 0.9 years; height = 164.6 ± 8.4 cm; mass = 68.5 ± 9.2 kg) performed vertical jumps before (Pre), immediately after each set (S1-S5), and up to 20 minutes post squat exercise (Post0-Post20) of either a power-endurance (PE; 5Ã--16 at 40% 1-RM) or controlled heavy (CHP; 5Ã--8 at 80%) protocol. Participants' jump height (JH), mean (MP), peak power (PP), mean (MV) and peak velocity (PV) were measured using a linear position transducer. 2-way repeated measures ANOVAs were run for all dependent variables. In the case of the violation of sphericity Greenhouse-Geisser results were reported. No significant intensity x time interactions were observed for any of the variables (p = 0.30-0.87). Main effects for time were observed (p ≤ 0.001, ηp2 = 0.52) for MP and MV, which were significantly lower than Pre at S2 through S5-Post0 (p = 0.001-0.02) time points. Additionally, main effects for time were observed (p ≤ 0.001, ηp2 = 0.43) for PP and PV, which were significantly lower than Pre at all time points (p = 0.001-0.03) with the exception of Post10 (p = 0.17-0.21). Lastly, JH was significantly lower than Pre for all time points (p ≤ 0.001-0.02) except for Post5 (p = 0.13) and Post10 (p = 0.25). This study suggests overall training volume and not training-load could have attributed to the similar fatigue and recovery-related responses that were observed. The present findings suggest that vertical jump performance may be negatively affected following moderate to heavy exercise for up to 20 minutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aims: Weight-bearing jump tests measure lower extremity muscle power, velocity, and force, and may be more strongly related to physical performance than grip strength. However, these relationships are not well described in older adults. Methods: Participants were 1242 older men (mean age 84 ± 4 years) in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study. Jump peak power (Watts/kg body weight), force (Newton/kg body weight) at peak power, and velocity (m/s) at peak power were measured by jump tests on a force plate. Grip strength (kg/kg body weight) was assessed by hand-held dynamometry. Physical performance included 400 m walk time (s), 6 m usual gait speed (m/s), and 5-repeated chair stands speed (#/s). Results: In adjusted Pearson correlations, power/kg and velocity moderately correlated with all performance measures (range r = 0.41–0.51; all p < 0.001), while correlations for force/kg and grip strength/kg were weaker (range r = 0.20–0.33; all p < 0.001). Grip strength/kg moderately correlated with power/kg (r = 0.44; p < 0.001) but not velocity or force/kg. In adjusted linear regression with standardized βs, 1 SD lower power/kg was associated with worse: 400 m walk time (β = 0.47), gait speed (β = 0.42), and chair stands speed (β = 0.43) (all p < 0.05). Associations with velocity were similar (400 m walk time: β = 0.42; gait speed: β = 0.38; chair stands speed: β = 0.37; all p < 0.05). Force/kg and grip strength/kg were more weakly associated with performance (range β = 0.18–0.28; all p < 0.05). Conclusions/discussion: Jump power and velocity had stronger associations with physical performance than jump force or grip strength. This suggests lower extremity power and velocity may be more strongly related to physical performance than lower extremity force or upper extremity strength in older men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The modern term economy is associated above all with market exchange. But it derives from the Greek oikos, which for Aristotle referred to the well-managed estate, able to withstand the forces of supply and demand by virtue of a high degree of self-sufficiency. The paper explores the long-term discontinuous expansion of the principle of price-forming markets (in the sense of Karl Polanyi) at the expense of self-sufficiency in a zone of the Great Hungarian Plain where the author has carried out long-term field research. The historically "backward" region of the Danube-Tisza interfluve has been integrated into wider historical processes through different forms of market exchange, first under peripheral variants of capitalism, then in the later decades of socialism, and recently under neoliberal capitalism in a political climate of "illiberal democracy" or populism. The paper analyses continuity and change across these epochs at the societal level, with ethnographic illustrations. In addition to Polanyi's notions of "market society" and "double movement", it draws theoretically on Ferenc Erdei's agenda to overcome rural backwardness through embourgeoisement; it is found that the interests of the rural population were more effectively promoted in the decades of market socialism than in any other period before or since. With the progressive establishment of protected areas for conservation and communal indigenous land, market economy has been regulated in the Peruvian Amazon. Interlinked networks and institutions situate the agency of institutional entrepreneurs championing forest protection and indigenous peoples' rights over territory and resources. This paper shows how a critical integration of new institutionalisms in the social sciences provides a suitable theory frame to study the process of protectionist institutional change as envisioned by Karl Polanyi. The cumulative result of socially-embedded state activism –that is, regulatory activism that is embedded in society– is an institutional regime that strengthens the resources and capabilities of conservationist groups and Amazonian indigenous peoples' organisations as collective constructs while facing the social forces of commodification.
