ConspectusNanoporous frameworks are a large and diverse family of supramolecular materials, whose chemical building units (organic, inorganic, or both) are assembled into a 3D architecture with well-defined connectivity and topology, featuring intrinsic porosity. These materials play a key role in various industrial processes and applications, such as energy production and conversion, fluid separation, gas storage, water harvesting, and many more. The performance and suitability of nanoporous materials for each specific application are directly related to both their physical and chemical properties, and their determination is crucial for process engineering and optimization of performances. In this Account, we focus on some recent developments in the multiscale modeling of physical properties of nanoporous frameworks, highlighting the latest advances in three specific areas: mechanical properties, thermal properties, and adsorption.In the study of the mechanical behavior of nanoporous materials, the past few years have seen a rapid acceleration of research. For example, computational resources have been pooled to create a public large-scale database of elastic constants as part of the Materials Project initiative to accelerate innovation in materials research: those can serve as a basis for data-based discovery of materials with targeted properties, as well as the training of machine learning predictor models.The large-scale prediction of thermal behavior, in comparison, is not yet routinely performed at such a large scale. Tentative databases have been assembled at the DFT level on specific families of materials, such as zeolites, but prediction at larger scale currently requires the use of transferable classical force fields, whose accuracy can be limited.Finally, adsorption is naturally one of the most studied physical properties of nanoporous frameworks, as fluid separation or storage is often the primary target for these materials. We highlight the recent achievements and open challenges for adsorption prediction at a large scale, focusing in particular on the accuracy of computational models and the reliability of comparisons with experimental data available. We detail some recent methodological improvements in the prediction of adsorption-related properties: in particular, we describe the recent research efforts to go beyond the study of thermodynamic quantities (uptake, adsorption enthalpy, and thermodynamic selectivity) and predict transport properties using data-based methods and high-throughput computational schemes. Finally, we stress the importance of data-based methods of addressing all sources of uncertainty.The Account concludes with some perspectives about the latest developments and open questions in data-based approaches and the integration of computational and experimental data together in the materials discovery loop.

Graphene oxide (GO) is the one of the most promising family of materials as atomically thin membranes for water-related molecular separation technologies due to its amphipathic nature and layered structure. Here, we show important aspects of GO on water adsorption from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, and ex-situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Although the MD simulations for GO and the reduced GO models revealed that the flexibility of the interlayer spacing could be attributed to the oxygen-functional groups of GO, the ultra-large GO model cannot well explain the observed swelling of GO from XRD experiments. Our MD simulations propose a realistic GO interlayer structure constructed by staggered stacking of flexible GO sheets, which can explain very well the swelling nature upon water adsorption. The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observation also supports the non-regular staggered stacking structure of GO. Furthermore, we demonstrate the existence of the two distinct types of adsorbed water molecules in the staggered stacking: water bonded with hydrophilic functional groups and "free" mobile water. Finally, we show that the staggered stacking of GO plays a crucial role in H/D isotopic recognition in water adsorption, as well as the high mobility of water molecules., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

We have investigated through molecular simulation the intrusion of electrolytes in two representative pure-silica zeolites, silicalite-1 and chabazite, in which point defects were introduced in varying amounts. We distinguish between two types of defects, considering either "weak" or "strong" silanol nest defects, resulting in different hydration behaviors. In the presence of weak defects, the hydration process occurs through a homogeneous nucleation process, while with strong defects, we observe an initial adsorption followed by a filling of the nanoporous volume at a higher pressure. However, we show that electrolytes do not penetrate the zeolites, and these defects appear to have only marginal influence on the thermodynamics of electrolyte intrusion. While replacing pure water by the electrolyte solution shifts the intrusion pressure toward higher values because of the drop of water saturation vapor pressure, an increase in hydrophilicity of the framework due to point defects has the opposite effect, showing that controlling the amount of defects in zeolites is crucial for storage energy applications.

Molecular simulations involving electrolytes are usually performed at a fixed amount of salt ions in the simulation box, reproducing macroscopic concentration. Although this statement is valid in the bulk, the concentration of an electrolyte confined in nanoporous materials such as MOFs or zeolites is greatly affected and remains a priori unknown. The nanoporous material in equilibrium with the bulk electrolyte exchange water and ions at a given chemical potential Δμ in the semi-grand-canonical ensemble, that must be calibrated in order to determine the concentration in the nanoporous material. In this work, we propose an algorithm based on nonequilibrium candidate Monte Carlo (NCMC) moves to ultimately perform MC simulations in contact with a saline reservoir. First, we adapt the Widom insertion technique to calibrate the chemical potential by alchemically transmuting water molecules into ions by using NCMC moves. The chemical potential defines a Monte Carlo osmostat in the semi-grand-constant volume and temperature ensemble (Δμ, N , V , T ) to be added in a Monte Carlo simulation where the number of ions fluctuates. In order to validate the method, we adapted the NCMC move to determine the free energy of water solvation and subsequently explore thermodynamics of electrolyte solvation at infinite dilution in water. Finally, we implemented the osmostat in MC simulations initialized with bulk water that are driven toward electrolyte solutions of similar concentration as the saline reservoir. Our results demonstrate that alchemical osmostat for MC simulation is a promising tool for use to sample electrolyte insertion in nanoporous materials.

Molecular adsorption in nanoporous materials has many large-scale industrial applications ranging from separation to storage. To design the best materials, computational simulations are key to guiding the experimentation and engineering processes. Because nanoporous materials exist in a plethora of forms, we need to speed up the existing simulation tools to be able to screen databases of hundreds of thousands of structures. Here, we describe a new algorithm that quickly calculates adsorption enthalpies by sampling the surface of the material instead of the whole porous space. This surface sampling has been tested on the CoRE MOF 2019 database and has been proven to be more than 2 orders of magnitude faster than the gold standard method (Widom insertion), with an acceptable level of error on an enthalpy value of 0.34 kJ mol -1 , and is therefore proposed as a valuable addition to the high-throughput screening toolbox., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Porosity and surface area analysis play a prominent role in modern materials science. At the heart of this sits the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of micro- and mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported areas, resulting in reproducibility problems in both academia and industry. To prove this, for this analysis, 18 already-measured raw adsorption isotherms were provided to sixty-one labs, who were asked to calculate the corresponding BET areas. This round-robin exercise resulted in a wide range of values. Here, the reproducibility of BET area determination from identical isotherms is demonstrated to be a largely ignored issue, raising critical concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To solve this major issue, a new computational approach to accurately and systematically determine the BET area of nanoporous materials is developed. The safe storage of flammable gases, such as acetylene, is essential for current industrial purposes. However, the narrow pressure (P) and temperature range required for the industrial use of pure acetylene (100 < P < 200 kPa at 298 K) and its explosive behaviour at higher pressures make its storage and release challenging. Flexible metal-organic frameworks that exhibit a gated adsorption/desorption behaviour-in which guest uptake and release occur above threshold pressures, usually accompanied by framework deformations-have shown promise as storage adsorbents. Herein, the pressures for gas uptake and release of a series of zinc-based mixed-ligand catenated metal-organic frameworks were controlled by decorating its ligands with two different functional groups and changing their ratio. This affects the deformation energy of the framework, which in turn controls the gated behaviour. The materials offer good performances for acetylene storage with a usable capacity of ~90 v/v (77% of the overall amount) at 298 K and under a practical pressure range (100-150 kPa)., (© 2022. Quantum dots (QDs) embedded in inorganic matrices have been extensively studied for their potential applications in lighting, displays, and solar cells. While a significant amount of research studies focused on their experimental fabrication, the origin of their relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield has not been investigated yet, although it severely hinders practical applications. In this study, we use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to pinpoint the nature of excited states of CdSe QDs embedded in various inorganic matrices. The formation of undercoordinated Se atoms and nonbridging oxygen atoms at the QD/glass interface is responsible for the localization of a hole wave function, leading to the formation of low-energy excited states with weak oscillator strength. These states provide pathways for nonradiative processes and compete with radiative emission. The photoluminescence performance is predicted for CdSe QDs in different matrices and validated by experiments. The results of this study have significant implications for understanding the underlying photophysics of CdSe QDs embedded in inorganic matrices that would facilitate the fabrication of highly luminescent glasses.

A metal-organic framework (MOF) CTH-17 based on lanthanum(III) and the conformationally chiral linker 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene, cpb 6- : [La 2 (cpb)]·1.5dmf was prepared by the solvothermal method in dimethylformamide (dmf) and characterized by variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction (VTPXRD), variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal diffraction (SCXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). CTH-17 is a rod-MOF with new topology och . It has high-temperature stability with Sohncke space groups P 6 1 22/ P 6 5 22 at 90 K and P 622 at 300 and 500 K, all phases characterized with SCXRD and at 293 K also with three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction. VTPXRD indicates a third phase appearing after 620 K and stable up to 770 K. Gas sorption isotherms with N 2 indicate a modest surface area of 231 m 2 g -1 for CTH-17 , roughly in agreement with the crystal structure. Carbon dioxide sorption reveals a gate-opening effect of CTH-17 where the structure opens up when the loading of CO 2 reaches approximately ∼0.45 mmol g -1 or 1 molecule per unit cell. Based on the SCXRD data, this is interpreted as flexibility based on the concerted movements of the propeller-like hexatopic cpb linkers, the movement intramolecularly transmitted by the π-π stacking of the cpb linkers and helped by the fluidity of the LaO 6 coordination sphere. This was corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations yielding the chiral phase ( P 622) as the energy minimum and a completely racemic phase ( P 6/ mmm ), with symmetric cpb linkers representing a saddle point in a racemization process.

The attachment and dissociation of a proton from a water molecule and the proton transfers at solid-liquid interfaces play vital roles in numerous biological, chemical processes and for the development of sustainable functional materials for energy harvesting and conversion applications. Using first-principles computational methodologies, we investigated the protonated forms of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-H + ) interacting with water clusters (W n , where n = 1-6) as a model to quantify the proton conducting and localization ability at solid-liquid interfaces. Successive addition of explicit water molecules to POSS-H + shows that the assistance of at least three water molecules is required to dissociate the proton from POSS with the formation of an Eigen cation (H 9 O 4 + ), whereas the presence of a fourth water molecule highly favors the formation of a Zundel ion (H 5 O 2 + ). Reaction pathway and energy barrier analysis reveal that the formation of the Eigen cation requires significantly higher energy than the Zundel features. This confirms that the Zundel ion is destabilized and promptly converts in to Eigen ion at this interface. Moreover, we identified a Grotthuss-type mechanism for the proton transfer through a water chain close to the interface, where symmetrical and unsymmetrical arrangements of water molecules around H + of protonated POSS-H + are involved in the conduction of proton through water wires where successive Eigen-to-Zundel and Zundel-to-Eigen transformations are observed in quick succession., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Nanoporous framework materials are a promising class of materials for energy-efficient technology of xenon/krypton separation by physisorption. Many studies on Xe/Kr separation by adsorption have focused on the determination of structure/property relationships, the description of theoretical limits of performance, and the identification of top-performing materials. Here, we provide a study based on a high-throughput screening of the adsorption of Xe, Kr, and Xe/Kr mixtures in 12 020 experimental MOF materials, to provide a better comprehension of the thermodynamics behind Xe/Kr separation in nanoporous materials and the microscopic origins of Xe/Kr selectivity at both low and ambient pressure.

Porous materials contain regions of empty space into which guest molecules can be selectively adsorbed and sometimes chemically transformed. This has made them useful in both industrial and domestic applications, ranging from gas separation, energy storage and ion exchange to heterogeneous catalysis and green chemistry. Porous materials are often ordered (crystalline) solids. Order-or uniformity-is frequently held to be advantageous, or even pivotal, to our ability to engineer useful properties in a rational way. Here we highlight the growing evidence that topological disorder can be useful in creating alternative properties in porous materials. In particular, we highlight here several concepts for the creation of novel porous liquids, rationalize routes to porous glasses and provide perspectives on applications for porous liquids and glasses., (© 2021. The organic components in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique: they are embedded in a crystalline lattice, yet, as they are separated from each other by tunable free space, a large variety of dynamic behavior can emerge. These rotational dynamics of the organic linkers are especially important due to their influence over properties such as gas adsorption and kinetics of guest release. To fully exploit linker rotation, such as in the form of molecular machines, it is necessary to engineer correlated linker dynamics to achieve their cooperative functional motion. Here, we show that for MIL-53, a topology with closely spaced rotors, the phenylene functionalization allows researchers to tune the rotors' steric environment, shifting linker rotation from completely static to rapid motions at frequencies above 100 MHz. For steric interactions that start to inhibit independent rotor motion, we identify for the first time the emergence of coupled rotation modes in linker dynamics. These findings pave the way for function-specific engineering of gear-like cooperative motion in MOFs.

Several organic-inorganic hybrid materials from the metal-organic framework (MOF) family have been shown to form stable liquids at high temperatures. Quenching then results in the formation of melt-quenched MOF glasses that retain the three-dimensional coordination bonding of the crystalline phase. These hybrid glasses have intriguing properties and could find practical applications, yet the melt-quench phenomenon has so far remained limited to a few MOF structures. Here we turn to hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites-which occupy a prominent position within materials chemistry owing to their functional properties such as ion transport, photoconductivity, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity-and show that a series of dicyanamide-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites undergo melting. Our combined experimental-computational approach demonstrates that, on quenching, they form glasses that largely retain their solid-state inorganic-organic connectivity. The resulting materials show very low thermal conductivities (~0.2 W m -1 K -1 ), moderate electrical conductivities (10 -3 -10 -5  S m -1 ) and polymer-like thermomechanical properties., (© 2021. Unusual adsorption phenomena, such as breathing and negative gas adsorption (NGA), are rare and challenge our thermodynamic understanding of adsorption in deformable porous solids. In particular, NGA appears to break the rules of thermodynamics in these materials by exhibiting a spontaneous release of gas accompanying an increase in pressure. This anomaly relies on long-lived metastable states. A fundamental understanding of this process is desperately required for the discovery of new materials with this exotic property. Interestingly, NGA was initially observed upon adsorption of methane at relatively low temperature, close to the respective standard boiling point of the adsorptive, and no NGA was observed at elevated temperatures. In this contribution, we present an extensive investigation of adsorption of an array of gases at various temperatures on DUT-49, a material which features an NGA transition. Experiments, featuring a wide range of gases and vapors at temperatures ranging from 21-308 K, were used to identify for each guest a critical temperature range in which NGA can be detected. The experimental results were complemented by molecular simulations that help to rationalize the absence of NGA at elevated temperatures, and the non-monotonic behavior present upon temperature decrease. Furthermore, this in-depth analysis highlights the crucial thermodynamic and kinetic conditions for NGA, which are unique to each guest and potentially other solids with similar effects. We expect this exploration to provide detailed guidelines for experimentally discovering NGA and related "rule breaking" phenomena in novel and already known materials, and provide the conditions required for the application of this effect, for example as pressure amplifying materials.

Interpenetration of two or more sublattices is common among many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we study the evolution of one zirconium cluster-based, 3,8-connected MOF from its non-interpenetrated (NU-1200) to interpenetrated (STA-26) isomer. We observe this transient catenation process indirectly using ensemble methods, such as nitrogen porosimetry and X-ray diffraction, and directly, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The approach detailed here will serve as a template for other researchers to monitor the interpenetration of their MOF samples at the bulk and single-particle limits. We investigate the mechanical stability of both lattices experimentally by pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation as well as computationally with density functional theory calculations. Both lines of study reveal that STA-26 is considerably more mechanically stable than NU-1200. We conclude this study by demonstrating the potential of these MOFs and their mixed phases for the capture of gaseous n -hexane, used as a structural mimic for the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard gas.

Framework materials at the molecular level, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOF), were recently found to exhibit exotic and counterintuitive micromechanical properties. Stimulated by host-guest interactions, these so-called soft porous crystals can display counterintuitive adsorption phenomena such as negative gas adsorption (NGA). NGA materials are bistable frameworks where the occurrence of a metastable overloaded state leads to pressure amplification upon a sudden framework contraction. How can we control activation barriers and energetics via functionalization of the molecular building blocks that dictate the frameworks' mechanical response? In this work we tune the elastic and inelastic properties of building blocks at the molecular level and analyze the mechanical response of the resulting frameworks. From a set of 11 frameworks, we demonstrate that widening of the backbone increases stiffness, while elongation of the building blocks results in a decrease in critical yield stress of buckling. We further functionalize the backbone by incorporation of sp 3 hybridized carbon atoms to soften the molecular building blocks, or stiffen them with sp 2 and sp carbons. Computational modeling shows how these modifications of the building blocks tune the activation barriers within the energy landscape of the guest-free bistable frameworks. Only frameworks with free energy barriers in the range of 800 to 1100 kJ mol -1 per unit cell, and moderate yield stress of 0.6 to 1.2 nN for single ligand buckling, exhibit adsorption-induced contraction and negative gas adsorption. Advanced experimental in situ methodologies give detailed insights into the structural transitions and the adsorption behavior. The new framework DUT-160 shows the highest magnitude of NGA ever observed for nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. ConspectusLiquids under confinement differ in behavior from their bulk counterparts and can acquire properties that are specific to the confined phase and linked to the nature and structure of the host matrix. While confined liquid water is not a new topic of research, the past few years have seen a series of intriguing novel features for water inside nanoscale pores. These unusual properties arise from the very specific nature of nanoporous materials, termed "soft porous crystals"; they combine large-scale flexibility with a heterogeneous internal surface. This creates a rich diversity of behavior for the adsorbed water, and the combination of different experimental characterization techniques along with computational chemistry at various scales is necessary to understand the phenomena observed and their microscopic origins. The range of systems of interest span the whole chemical range, from the inorganic (zeolites, imogolites) to the organic (microporous carbons, graphene, and its derivatives), and even encompass the hybrid organic-inorganic systems (such as metal-organic frameworks).The combination of large scale flexibility with the strong physisorption (or even chemisorption) of water can lead to unusual properties (belonging to the "metamaterials" category) and to novel phenomena. One striking example is the recent elucidation of the mechanism of negative hydration expansion in ZrW 2 O 8 , by which adsorption of ∼10 wt % water in the inorganic nonporous framework leads to large shrinkage of its volume. Another eye-catching case is the occurrence of multiple water adsorption-driven structural transitions in the MIL-53 family of materials: the specific interactions between water guest molecules and the host framework create behavior that has not been observed with any other adsorbate. Both are counterintuitive phenomena that have been elucidated by a combination of experimental in situ techniques and molecular simulation.Another important direction of research is the shift in the systems and phenomena studied, from physical adsorption toward studies of reactivity, hydrothermal stability, and the effect of confinement on aqueous phases more complex than pure water. There have been examples of water adsorption in highly flexible metal-organic frameworks being able to compete with the materials' coordination bonds, thereby limiting its hydrothermal stability, while tweaking the functional groups of the same framework can lead to increased stability while retaining the flexibility of the material. However, this additional complexity and tunability in the macroscopic behavior can occur from changes in the confined fluid rather than the material. Very recent studies have shown that aqueous solutions of high concentration (such as LiCl up to 20 mol L -1 ) confined in flexible nanoporous materials can have specific properties different from pure water and not entirely explained by osmotic effects. There, the strong ordering of the confined electrolyte competes with the structural flexibility of the framework to create an entirely new behavior for the {host, guest} system.

Graphene oxide is a rising star among 2D materials, yet its interaction with liquid water remains a fundamentally open question: experimental characterization at the atomic scale is difficult, and modeling by classical approaches cannot properly describe chemical reactivity. Here, we bridge the gap between simple computational models and complex experimental systems, by realistic first-principles molecular simulations of graphene oxide (GO) in liquid water. We construct chemically accurate GO models and study their behavior in water, showing that oxygen-bearing functional groups (hydroxyl and epoxides) are preferentially clustered on the graphene oxide layer. We demonstrated the specific properties of GO in water, an unusual combination of both hydrophilicity and fast water dynamics. Finally, we evidence that GO is chemically active in water, acquiring an average negative charge of the order of 10 mC m -2 . The ab initio modeling highlights the uniqueness of GO structures for applications as innovative membranes for desalination and water purification.

We have probed the local atomic structure of the interface between a CdSe quantum dot (QD) and a sodium silicate glass matrix. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determined the structural properties and bond lengths, in excellent agreement with previous experimental observations. On the basis of an analysis of radial distribution functions, coordination environment, and ring structures, we demonstrate that an important structural reconstruction occurs at the interface between the CdSe QD and the glass matrix. The incorporation of the CdSe QD disrupts the Na-O bonds, while stronger SiO 4 tetrahedra are reformed. The existence of the glass matrix breaks the stable 4-membered (4MR) and 6-membered (6MR) Cd-Se rings, and we observe a disassociated Cd atom migrated in the glass matrix. Besides, the formation of Se-Na and Cd-O linkages is observed at the CdSe QD/glass interface. These results significantly extend our understanding of the interfacial structure of CdSe QD-doped glasses and provide physical and chemical insight into the possible defect structure origin of CdSe QD, of interest to the fabrication of the highly luminescent CdSe QD-doped glasses.

Switchable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proposed for various energy-related storage and separation applications, but the mechanistic understanding of adsorption-induced switching transitions is still at an early stage. Here we report critical design criteria for negative gas adsorption (NGA), a counterintuitive feature of pressure amplifying materials, hitherto uniquely observed in a highly porous framework compound (DUT-49). These criteria are derived by analysing the physical effects of micromechanics, pore size, interpenetration, adsorption enthalpies, and the pore filling mechanism using advanced in situ X-ray and neutron diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, and calorimetric techniques parallelised to adsorption for a series of six isoreticular networks. Aided by computational modelling, we identify DUT-50 as a new pressure amplifying material featuring distinct NGA transitions upon methane and argon adsorption. In situ neutron diffraction analysis of the methane (CD 4 ) adsorption sites at 111 K supported by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations reveals a sudden population of the largest mesopore to be the critical filling step initiating structural contraction and NGA. In contrast, interpenetration leads to framework stiffening and specific pore volume reduction, both factors effectively suppressing NGA transitions.

In order to better understand the mechanical properties of crystalline materials, we performed a large-scale exploration of the elastic properties of 13 621 crystals from the Materials Project database, including both experimentally synthesized and hypothetical structures. We studied both their average (isotropic) behavior, as well as the anisotropy of the elastic properties: bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and linear compressibility. We show that general mechanical trends, which hold for isotropic (noncrystalline) materials at the macroscopic scale, also apply "on average" for crystals. Further, we highlight the importance of elastic anisotropy and the role of mechanical stability as playing key roles in the experimental feasibility of hypothetical compounds. We also quantify the frequency of occurrence of rare anomalous mechanical properties: 3% of the crystals feature negative linear compressibility, and only 0.3% have complete auxeticity., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

The last decade has seen an explosion of the family of framework materials and their study, from both the experimental and computational points of view. We propose here a short highlight of the current state of methodologies for modelling framework materials at multiple scales, putting together a brief review of new methods and recent endeavours in this area, as well as outlining some of the open challenges in this field. We will detail advances in atomistic simulation methods, the development of material databases and the growing use of machine learning for the prediction of properties. Photoswitchable components can modulate the properties of metal organic frameworks (MOFs); however, photolabile building blocks remain underexplored. A new strut NPDAC (2-nitro-1,4-phenylenediacetic acid) that undergoes photodecarboxylation has been prepared and incorporated into a MOF, using post-synthetic linker exchange (PSLE) from the structural analogue containing PDAC (p-phenylenediacetic acid). Irradiation of NPDAC-MOF leads to MOF decomposition and concomitant formation of amorphous material. In addition to complete linker exchange, MOFs containing a mixture of PDAC and NPDAC can be obtained through partial linker exchange. In NPDAC30-MOF, which contains approximately 30 % NPDAC, the MOF retains crystallinity after irradiation, but the MOF contains defect sites consistent with loss of decarboxylated NPDAC linkers. The defect sites can be repaired by exposure to additional PDAC or NPDAC linkers at a much faster rate than the initial exchange process. The majority of research into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) focuses on their crystalline nature. Recent research has revealed solid-liquid transitions within the family, which we use here to create a class of functional, stable and porous composite materials. Described herein is the design, synthesis, and characterisation of MOF crystal-glass composites, formed by dispersing crystalline MOFs within a MOF-glass matrix. The coordinative bonding and chemical structure of a MIL-53 crystalline phase are preserved within the ZIF-62 glass matrix. Whilst separated phases, the interfacial interactions between the closely contacted microdomains improve the mechanical properties of the composite glass. More significantly, the high temperature open pore phase of MIL-53, which spontaneously transforms to a narrow pore upon cooling in the presence of water, is stabilised at room temperature in the crystal-glass composite. This leads to a significant improvement of CO 2 adsorption capacity.

We present an in situ powder X-ray diffraction study on the phase stability and polymorphism of the metal-organic framework ZIF-4, Zn(imidazolate) 2 , at simultaneous high pressure and high temperature, up to 8 GPa and 600 °C. The resulting pressure-temperature phase diagram reveals four, previously unknown, high-pressure-high-temperature ZIF phases. The crystal structures of two new phases-ZIF-4-cp-II and ZIF-hPT-II-were solved by powder diffraction methods. The total energy of ZIF-4-cp-II was evaluated using density functional theory calculations and was found to lie in between that of ZIF-4 and the most thermodynamically stable polymorph, ZIF- zni. ZIF-hPT-II was found to possess a doubly interpenetrated diamondoid topology and is isostructural with previously reported Cd(Imidazolate) 2 and Hg(Imidazolate) 2 phases. This phase exhibited extreme resistance to both temperature and pressure. The other two new phases could be assigned with a unit cell and space group, although their structures remain unknown. The pressure-temperature phase diagram of ZIF-4 is strikingly complicated when compared with that of the previously investigated, closely related ZIF-62 and demonstrates the ability to traverse complex energy landscapes of metal-organic systems using the combined application of pressure and temperature.

Mixed-metal MOFs are metal-organic frameworks that contain at least 2 different metal ions as nodes of their frameworks. They are prepared relatively easily by either a one-pot synthesis with a synthesis mixture containing the different metals, or by a post-synthetic ion-exchange method by soaking a monometallic MOF in a concentrated solution of a different (but compatible) metal-ion. More difficult is the accurate characterization of these materials. Is the formed product a mixture of monometallic MOFs or indeed a MOF with different metallic nodes? Are the metals randomly distributed or do they form domains? What is the oxidation state of the metals? How do the metals mutually influence each other, and impact the material's performance? Advanced characterization techniques are required e.g. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic resonance and electron microscopy. Computational tools at multiple scales are also often applied. In almost every case, a judicious choice of several techniques is required to unambiguously characterize the mixed-metal MOF. Although still in their infancy, several applications are emerging for mixed-metal MOFs, that improve on conventional monometallic MOFs. In the field of gas sorption and storage, especially the stability and affinity towards the target gases can be largely improved by introducing a second metal ion. In the case of flexible MOFs, the breathing behavior, and in particular the pressure at which the MOF opens, can be tailored. In heterogeneous catalysis, new cascade and tandem reactions become possible, with particular focus on reactions where the two metals in close proximity truly form a mixed-metal transition state. The bimetallic MOF should have a clear benefit over a mixture of the respective monometallic MOFs, and bimetallic enzymes can be a huge source of inspiration in this field. Another very promising application lies in the fields of luminescence and sensing. By tuning the lanthanide metals in mixed-metal lanthanide MOFs and by using the organic linkers as antennae, novel smart materials can be developed, acting as sensors and as thermochromic thermometers. Of course there are also still open challenges, as also mixed-metal MOFs do not escape the typical drawbacks of MOFs, such as low stability in moisture and possible metal leaching in liquids. The ease of synthesis of mixed-metal MOFs is a large bonus. In this critical review, we discuss in detail the synthesis, characterization, computational work and applications of mixed-metal MOFs.

In this paper, we parametrized in a consistent way a new force field for a range of different zeolitic imidazolate framework systems (ZIF-8, ZIF-8(H), ZIF-8(Br), and ZIF-8(Cl)), extending the MOF-FF parametrization methodology in two aspects. First, we implemented the possibility to use periodic reference data in order to prevent the difficulty of generating representative finite clusters. Second, a new optimizer based on the covariance matrix adaptation evolutionary strategy (CMA-ES) was employed during the parametrization process. We confirmed that CMA-ES, as a state-of-the-art black box optimizer for problems on continuous variables, is more efficient and versatile for force field optimization than the previous genetic algorithm. The obtained force field was then validated with respect to some static and dynamic properties. Much effort was spent to ensure that the FF is able to describe the crucial linker swing effect in a large number of ZIF-8 derivatives. For this reason, we compared our force field to ab initio molecular dynamic simulations and found an accuracy comparable to those obtained by different exchange-correlation functionals.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are microporous materials with huge potential for chemical processes. Structural collapse at high pressure, and transitions to liquid states at high temperature, have recently been observed in the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) family of MOFs. Here, we show that simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature conditions result in complex behaviour in ZIF-62 and ZIF-4, with distinct high- and low-density amorphous phases occurring over different regions of the pressure-temperature phase diagram. In situ powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy reveal that the stability of the liquid MOF state expands substantially towards lower temperatures at intermediate, industrially achievable pressures and first-principles molecular dynamics show that softening of the framework coordination with pressure makes melting thermodynamically easier. Furthermore, the MOF glass formed by melt quenching the high-temperature liquid possesses permanent, accessible porosity. Our results thus imply a route to the synthesis of functional MOF glasses at low temperatures, avoiding decomposition on heating at ambient pressure.

Among the numerous fascinating properties of metal⁻organic frameworks (MOFs), their rotational dynamics is perhaps one of the most intriguing, with clear consequences for adsorption and separation of molecules, as well as for optical and mechanical properties. A closer look at the rotational mobility in MOF linkers reveals that it is not only a considerably widespread phenomenon, but also a fairly diverse one. Still, the impact of these dynamics is often understated. In this review, we address the various mechanisms of linker rotation reported in the growing collection of literature, followed by a highlight of the methods currently used in their study, and we conclude with the impacts that such dynamics have on existing and future applications.

Azobenzene has become a ubiquitous component of functional molecules and polymeric materials because of the light-induced trans → cis isomerization of the diazene group. In contrast, there are very few applications utilizing azobenzene luminescence, since the excitation energy typically dissipates via nonradiative pathways. Inspired by our earlier studies with 2,2'-bis[ N,N'-(2-pyridyl)methyl]diaminoazobenzene (AzoAM oP) and related compounds, we investigated a series of five aminoazobenzene derivatives and their corresponding silver complexes. Four of the aminoazobenzene ligands, which exhibit no emission under ambient conditions, form silver coordination polymers that are luminescent at room temperature. AzoAE pP (2,2'-bis[ N,N'-(4-pyridyl)ethyl]diaminoazobenzene) assembles into a three-dimensional coordination polymer (AgAAE pP) that undergoes a reversible loss of emission upon the addition of metal-coordinating analytes such as pyridine. The switching behavior is consistent with the disassembly and reassembly of the coordination polymer driven by displacement of the aminoazobenzene ligands by coordinating analytes.

A highly porous metal-organic framework DUT-48, isoreticular to DUT-49, is reported with a high surface area of 4560 m 2 ·g -1 and methane storage capacity up to 0.27 g·g -1 (164 cm 3 ·cm -3 ) at 6.5 MPa and 298 K. The flexibility of DUT-48 and DUT-49 under external and internal (adsorption-induced) pressure is analyzed and rationalized using a combination of advanced experimental and computational techniques. While both networks undergo a contraction by mechanical pressure, only DUT-49 shows adsorption-induced structural transitions and negative gas adsorption of n -butane and nitrogen. This adsorption behavior was analyzed by microcalorimetry measurements and molecular simulations to provide an explanation for the lack of adsorption-induced breathing in DUT-48. It was revealed that for DUT-48, a significantly lower adsorption enthalpy difference and a higher framework stiffness prevent adsorption-induced structural transitions and negative gas adsorption. The mechanical behavior of both DUT-48 and DUT-49 was further analyzed by mercury porosimetry experiments and molecular simulations. Both materials exhibit large volume changes under hydrostatic compression, demonstrating noteworthy potential as shock absorbers with unprecedented high work energies., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

We use a combination of x-ray diffraction, total scattering, and quantum mechanical calculations to determine the mechanism responsible for hydration-driven contraction in ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8}. The inclusion of H&#95;{2}O molecules within the ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8} network drives the concerted formation of new W─O bonds to give one-dimensional (─W─O─)&#95;{n} strings. The topology of the ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8} network is such that there is no unique choice for the string trajectories: the same local changes in coordination can propagate with a large number of different periodicities. Consequently, ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8}·H&#95;{2}O is heavily disordered, with each configuration of strings forming a dense aperiodic "spaghetti." This new connectivity contracts the unit cell via large shifts in the Zr and W atom positions. Fluctuations of the undistorted parent structure towards this spaghetti phase emerge as the key negative thermal expansion (NTE) phonon modes in ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8} itself. The large relative density of NTE phonon modes in ZrW&#95;{2}O&#95;{8} actually reflects the degeneracy of volume-contracting spaghetti excitations, itself a function of the particular topology of this remarkable material.

We have studied the properties of water adsorbed inside nanotubes of hydrophilic imogolite, an aluminum silicate clay mineral, by means of molecular simulations. We used a classical force field to describe the water and the flexible imogolite nanotube and validated it against the data obtained from first-principles molecular dynamics. With it, we observe a strong structuration of the water confined in the nanotube, with specific adsorption sites and a distribution of hydrogen bond patterns. The combination of number of adsorption sites, their geometry, and the preferential tetrahedral hydrogen bonding pattern of water leads to frustration and disorder. We further characterize the dynamics of the water, as well as the hydrogen bonds formed between water molecules and the nanotube, which is found to be more than 1 order of magnitude longer than water-water hydrogen bonds.

Nanoscale windows in graphene (nanowindows) have the ability to switch between open and closed states, allowing them to become selective, fast, and energy-efficient membranes for molecular separations. These special pores, or nanowindows, are not electrically neutral due to passivation of the carbon edges under ambient conditions, becoming flexible atomic frameworks with functional groups along their rims. Through computer simulations of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon permeation, here we reveal the remarkable nanowindow behavior at the atomic scale: flexible nanowindows have a thousand times higher permeability than conventional membranes and at least twice their selectivity for oxygen/nitrogen separation. Also, weakly interacting functional groups open or close the nanowindow with their thermal vibrations to selectively control permeation. This selective fast permeation of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon in very restricted nanowindows suggests alternatives for future air separation membranes.

Whereas it is experimentally known that the inclusion of nanoparticles in hydrogels can lead to a mechanical reinforcement, a detailed molecular understanding of the adhesion mechanism is still lacking. Here we use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the nature of the interface between silica surfaces and solvated polymers. We show how differences in the nature of the polymer and the polymer-solvent interactions can lead to drastically different behavior of the polymer-surface adhesion. Comparing explicit and implicit solvent models, we conclude that this effect cannot be fully described in an implicit solvent. We highlight the crucial role of polymer solvation for the adsorption of the polymer chain on the silica surface, the significant dynamics of polymer chains on the surface, and details of the modifications in the structure solvated polymer close to the interface.

Controlled assembly of two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) has been demonstrated through a binary strategy in which 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)naphthalene ( 2 ), generated in situ by oxidative dehydrogenation of 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)naphthalene ( 1 ), is coupled in a 1:1 ratio with terphenyl-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid ( 3 ; to form SOF-8 ), 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diisophthalic acid ( 4 ; to form SOF-9 ), or 5,5'-bis-(azanediyl)-oxalyl-diisophthalic acid ( 5 ; to form SOF-10 ). Complementary O-H···N hydrogen bonds assemble 2D 6 3 - hcb (honeycomb) subunits that pack as layers in SOF-8 to give a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network with parallel channels hosting guest DMF (DMF = N , N '-dimethylformamide) molecules. SOF-9 and SOF-10 feature supramolecular networks of 2D → 3D inclined polycatenation of similar hcb layers as those in SOF-8 . Although SOF-8 suffers framework collapse upon guest removal, the polycatenated frameworks of SOF-9 and SOF-10 exhibit excellent chemical and thermal stability, solvent/moisture durability, and permanent porosity. Moreover, their corresponding desolvated (activated) samples SOF-9a and SOF-10a display enhanced adsorption and selectivity for CO 2 over N 2 and CH 4 . The structures of these activated compounds are well described by quantum chemistry calculations, which have allowed us to determine their mechanical properties, as well as identify their soft deformation modes and a large number of low-energy vibration modes. These results not only demonstrate an effective synthetic platform for porous organic molecular materials stabilized solely by primary hydrogen bonds but also suggest a viable means to build robust SOF materials with enhanced gas uptake capacity and selectivity., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

We review the high pressure forced intrusion studies of water in hydrophobic microporous materials such as zeolites and MOFs, a field of research that has emerged some 15 years ago and is now very active. Many of these studies are aimed at investigating the possibility of using these systems as energy storage devices. A series of all-silica zeolites (zeosil) frameworks were found suitable for reversible energy storage because of their stability with respect to hydrolysis after several water intrusion-extrusion cycles. Several microporous hydrophobic zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) also happen to be quite stable and resistant towards hydrolysis and thus seem very promising for energy storage applications. Replacing pure water by electrolyte aqueous solutions enables to increase the stored energy by a factor close to 3, on account of the high pressure shift of the intrusion transition. In addition to the fact that aqueous solutions and microporous silica materials are environmental friendly, these systems are thus becoming increasingly interesting for the design of new energy storage devices. This review also addresses the theoretical approaches and molecular simulations performed in order to better understand the experimental behavior of nano-confined water. Molecular simulation studies showed that water condensation takes place through a genuine first-order phase transition, provided that the interconnected pores structure is 3-dimensional and sufficiently open. In an extreme confinement situations such as in ferrierite zeosil, condensation seem to take place through a continuous supercritical crossing from a diluted to a dense fluid, on account of the fact that the first-order transition line is shifted to higher pressure, and the confined water critical point is correlatively shifted to lower temperature. These molecular simulation studies suggest that the most important features of the intrusion/extrusion process can be understood in terms of equilibrium thermodynamics considerations.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a family of chemically diverse materials, with applications in a wide range of fields, covering engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Until recently, research has focused almost entirely on crystalline structures, yet now a clear trend is emerging, shifting the emphasis onto disordered states, including 'defective by design' crystals, as well as amorphous phases such as glasses and gels. Here we introduce a strongly associated MOF liquid, obtained by melting a zeolitic imidazolate framework. We combine in situ variable temperature X-ray, ex situ neutron pair distribution function experiments, and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to study the melting phenomenon and the nature of the liquid obtained. We demonstrate from structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical information that the chemical configuration, coordinative bonding, and porosity of the parent crystalline framework survive upon formation of the MOF liquid.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 displays flexibility of its structure by rotation of its imidazolate linker. This "swing effect" has been widely described in the literature, both experimentally and theoretically, as a bistable system where the linker oscillates between two structures: "open window" and "closed window". By using quantum chemistry calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that the deformation upon adsorption is in fact continuous upon pore loading, with thermodynamics of packing effects being the reason behind stepped adsorption isotherms experimentally observed. Finally, we study a variant of ZIF-8 with a different linker, highlighting the influence of the linker and the balance of microscopic interactions on the framework's flexibility., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Here we highlight recent progress in the field of computational chemistry of nanoporous materials, focusing on methods and studies that address the extraordinary dynamic nature of these systems: the high flexibility of their frameworks, the large-scale structural changes upon external physical or chemical stimulation, and the presence of defects and disorder. The wide variety of behavior demonstrated in soft porous crystals, including the topical class of metal-organic frameworks, opens new challenges for computational chemistry methods at all scales.

Soft microporous materials exhibit properties, such as gated adsorption and breathing, which are highly desirable for many applications. These properties are largely studied for single crystals; however, many potential applications expect to construct structured or composite systems, examples of which include monoliths and mixed-matrix membranes. Herein, we use finite element methods to predict the macroscopic mechanical response of composite microporous materials. This implementation connects the microscopic treatment of crystalline structures to the response of a macroscopic sample. Our simulations reveal the bulk modulus of an embedded adsorbent within a composite is affected by the thickness and properties of the encapsulating layer. Subsequently, we employ this methodology to examine mixed-matrix membranes and materials of negative linear compressibility. This application of finite element methods allows for unprecedented insight into the mechanical properties of real-world systems and supports the development of composites containing mechanically anomalous porous materials.
