Shopping mall patrons were observed entering and leaving a department store. Their preference for means of ascending and descending an elevation required to enter/exit the store was recorded and compared. Of 3554 observations recorded, 65.5% of those approaching/leaving the store preferred ramps over the steps. The study admits to some limitations, yet results indicated significant differences in the preferences of mall patrons. Qualitative data offered other support favoring ramps over steps. A qualitative research design was used to investigate the experience of human service facility personnel with subcontracting. Characteristics and patterns of best and worst subcontracts are reported, and a list of companies doing business with work centers in the Southeastern United States as well as a list of jobs performed by these work centers are contained in the Appendices. In an extensive qualitative research project sponsored by the Partners of the Americas (32 professional and lay people from Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, the United States and the Dominican Republic) employment opportunities were examined for disabled youth in Central America. Despite economic and attitudinal barriers field researchers found innovations in financing, special education and rehabilitation programming, job development and job placement alternatives for those who live with disability in Central America.
