As if doing a PhD at one university is not “difficult” enough, I opted for a cotutelle agreement between the University of Luxembourg and Charles University for my PhD project on Cultural and Educational activities of the Jewish minority in Czechoslovakia and Luxembourg (1945 -1989). Since my roots are in the Czech Republic and Jewish history is very close to me, a jointly supervised thesis seemed like a clear choice. In fact, this was the first step on a tortuous road to a contract that was supposed to make my studies much easier and less stressful.

This communication addresses the device under joint supervision of international cooperation between French and Brazilian universities from a sample thesis. Celle ci could benefit from theoretical and methodological cooperation of different cultural settings. If this condition is always more complex for the student, who must take into account the diversity and otherness, it also releases a commitment to a single frame of mind by allowing decision-cultural and academic distance and aperture for continuity of research. In the thesis analyzed here, some activities were specific to Brazilian reality, but the understanding and interpretation of the problem have been enriched by a bicultural education., Cette communication aborde le dispositif de cotutelle dans le cadre de la coopération internationale établie entre les universités françaises et brésiliennes à partir d’un exemple de thèse. Celle¬ci a pu bénéficier d’une coopération théorique et méthodologique de cadres culturels différents. Si cette condition est toujours plus complexe pour le doctorant, qui doit tenir compte de la diversité et de l’altérité, elle le libère aussi d’un compromis à un cadre unique de pensée en permettant une prise de distance culturelle et académique et une ouverture pour la continuité des travaux de recherche. Dans la thèse analysée ici, certaines activités étaient spécifiques de la réalité brésilienne, mais la compréhension et l’interprétation de la problématique ont été enrichies par une formation biculturelle., A presente comunicação aborda o mecanismo de supervisão conjunta, acordo chamado cotutela, no âmbito de cooperação internacional estabelecido entre as universidades francesas e brasileiras de uma tese. Esta se beneficiou de uma cooperação teórica e metodológica de diferentes contextos culturais. Esta condição é sempre mais complexa para o aluno, que deve levar em conta a diversidade e alteridade, ela também libera um compromisso para um quadro único do pensar, permitindo tomar distância acadêmica e cultural e uma abertura para a continuidade da pesquisa. A tese analisada apresenta algumas atividades que foram específicas para a realidade brasileira, mas a compreensão e interpretação do tema foram enriquecidas por uma educação bicultural.

5. Promovieren in Geschichte und die cotutelle in Frankreich

In Frankreich hat eine Promotion – zumindest außerhalb des engeren akademischen Feldes – nicht den gleichen Stellenwert wie in Deutschland. Der Beitrag versucht deshalb zunächst, die Stellung und den sozialen Status einer Doktorarbeit in der französischen Gesellschaft zu umreißen. Im Anschluss daran werden die Strukturen der Doktorandenausbildung vorgestellt, die sich hier vor allem dadurch auszeichnen, dass sie weitgehend national organisiert sind. Ein Blick auf die für deutsche Promovierende in Frankreich besonders interessanten Betreuungsangebote leitet über zu einer Vorstellung der konkreten Promotionsbedingungen, wobei sowohl auf materielle als auch auf intellektuelle Aspekte eingegangen wird. Abschließend wird das Promovieren in Doppelbetreuung (cotutelle) thematisiert und ganz besonders auf die informellen Unterschiede zwischen dem deutschen und französischen System eingegangen.
