Frequency Selective Bolometers (FSBs) are a new type of detector for millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths that are transparent to all but a narrow range of frequencies as set by characteristics of the absorber itself. Therefore, stacks of FSBs tuned to different frequencies provide a low-loss compact method for utilizing a large fraction of the light collected by a telescope. Tests of prototype FSBs, described here, indicate that the absorption spectra are well predicted by models, that peak absolute absorption efficiencies of order 50% are attainable, and that their out-of-band transmission is high., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures

We present measurements of the integrated flux relative to the local background of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and the region 30-Doradus (the Tarantula Nebula) in the LMC in four frequency bands centered at 245, 400, 460, and 630 GHz, based on observations made with the TopHat telescope. We combine these observations with the corresponding measurements for the DIRBE bands 8, 9, and 10 to cover the frequency range 245 - 3000 GHz (100 - 1220 micrometers) for these objects. We present spectra for all three objects and fit these spectra to a single-component greybody emission model and report best-fit dust temperatures, optical depths, and emissivity power-law indices, and we compare these results with other measurements in these regions and elsewhere. We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10 square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2 icm to 20 icm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of our analysis methods, compare the results from the three flights, derive new constraints on the CMB power spectrum from the combined data and reduce the data to total-power Wiener-filtered maps of the CMB. A key feature of this new analysis is a determination of the amplitude of CMB fluctuations at $\ell \sim 400$. The third flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1), in June 1995, observed a new strip of sky, doubling the sky coverage of the original MSAM1 dataset. MSAM1 observes with a 0.5 deg beam size in four bands from 5-20 icm. From these four bands we derive measurements of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropy and interstellar dust emission. Our measurement of dust emission correlates well with the 100 um IRAS Sky Survey Atlas; from this comparison we determine an effective emissivity spectral index between 100 um and 444 um of 1.46 +/- 0.28. Analysis of our measurement of CMBR anisotropy shows that for Gaussian-shaped correlation functions with theta_c = 0.3 deg, we place a limit on total rms anisotropy of 2.2 x 10^{-5} < Delta T/T < 3.9 x 10^{-5} (90% confidence interval, including calibration error). The band-power limits are = ^{1/2} = 50^{+16}_{-11} uK at l = 160, and = 65^{+18}_{-13} uK at l = 270 (1 sigma limits, including calibration error). The corresponding limits with statistical errors only are = 50^{+13}_{-9} uK and = 65^{+14}_{-10} uK respectively. Whole disk brightness ratios for Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars are reported at 5.7, 9.5, 16.4, and 22.5 cm$^{-1}$. Observations from the first flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-92) are analyzed to search for the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect towards the Coma cluster. This balloon-borne instrument uses a $28\arcmin$ FWHM beam and a three position chopping pattern with a throw of $\pm40\arcmin$. With spectral channels at 5.7, 9.3, 16.5, and 22.6~\icm, the observations simultaneously sample the frequency range where the SZ spectral distortion in the intensity transitions from a decrement to an increment and where the fractional intensity change is substantially larger than in the Rayleigh-Jeans region. We set limits on the Comptonization parameter integrated over our antenna pattern, $\Delta y \leq 8.0 \times 10^{-5}$($2 \sigma$). For a spherically symmetric isothermal model, this implies a central Comptonization parameter, $y_o \leq 2.0 \times 10^{-4}$, or a central electron density, $n_o \leq 5.8 \times10^{-3}$cm$^{-3}h_{50}$, a result consistent with central densities implied by X-ray brightness measurements and central Comptonization estimates from lower frequency observations of the SZ effect., Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX+aasms4 package, 1 PostScript figure. We report the characterization of bright, compact features in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) detected during the June 1992 and June 1994 balloon flights of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-92 and MSAM1-94, respectively). Spectral flux densities are determined for each feature at 5.7, 9.3, and 16.5 cm$^{-1}$. No viable counterparts for these features were found in source catalogs at 5 GHz or at 100 $\mu$m. The measured spectrum of each feature is consistent with a temperature fluctuation in the CMBR. The goal of the second flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-94) was to confirm the measurement of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropy made in the first flight (MSAM1-92). The CMBR anisotropy and interstellar dust emission signals from the two flights are compared by forming the sum and difference of those portions of the data with the same pointings on the sky. The difference data are consistent with a null detection, while the summed data show significant signal. We report on the characteristics and design details of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM), a millimeter-wave, balloon-borne telescope that has been used to observe anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) on 0\fdg5 angular scales. The gondola is capable of determining and maintaining absolute orientation to a few arcminutes during a one-night flight. Emphasis is placed on the optical and pointing performance as well as the weight and power budgets. We also discuss the total balloon/gondola mechanical system. The pendulation from this system is a ubiquitous perturbation on the pointing system. The second flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-94) observed the same field as the first flight (MSAM1-92) to confirm our earlier measurement of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropy. This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of $\pm40\arcmin$, and simultaneously measures single and double differenced sky signals. We observe in four spectral channels centered at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, providing sensitivity to the peak of the CMBR and to thermal emission from interstellar dust. The dust component correlates well with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR observations in our double difference channel correlate well with the earlier observations, but the single difference channel shows some discrepancies. We obtain a detection of fluctuations in the MSAM1-94 dataset that match CMBR in our spectral bands of $\Delta T/T = 1.9^{+1.3}_{-0.7}\times 10^{-5}$ (90\% confidence interval, including calibration uncertainty) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg3, using the double difference demodulation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 postscript figures, uses aastex 4.0. Observations from the first flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM) are analyzed to place limits on Gaussian fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR). This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of $\pm40\arcmin$; the resulting data is analyzed in statistically independent single and double difference datasets. We observe in four spectral channels at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, allowing the separation of interstellar dust emission from CMBR fluctuations. The dust component is correlated with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR component has two regions where the signature of an unresolved source is seen. Rejecting these two source regions, we obtain a detection of fluctuations which match CMBR in our spectral bands of $0.6 \times 10^{-5} < \Delta T/T < 2.2 \times 10^{-5}$ (90\% CL interval) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg5, using the single difference demodulation. The formation of the first objects, stars and galaxies and their subsequent evolution remain a cosmological unknown. Few observational probes of these processes exist. The Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) originates from this era, and can provide information to test models of both galaxy evolution and the growth of primordial structure. The Explorer of Diffuse Galactic Emission (EDGE) is a proposed balloon-borne mission designed to measure the spatial fluctuations in the CIB from 200 micrometers to 1 millimeter on 6' to 3 degree scales with 2 microKelvin sensitivity/resolution element. Such measurements would provide a sensitive probe of the large-scale variation in protogalaxy density at redshifts approximately 0.5-3. In this paper, we present the scientific justification for the mission and show a concept for the instrument and observations.

Measurements of the large-scale anisotropy of the Cosmic Infared Background (CIB) can be used to determine the characteristics of the distribution of galaxies at the largest spatial scales. With this information important tests of galaxy evolution models and primordial structure growth are possible. In this paper, we describe the scientific goals, instrumentation, and operation of EDGE, a mission using an Antarctic Long Duration Balloon (LDB) platform. EDGE will osbserve the anisotropy in the CIB in 8 spectral bands from 270 GHz-1.5 THz with 6 arcminute angular resolution over a region -400 square degrees. EDGE uses a one-meter class off-axis telescope and an array of Frequency Selective Bololeters (FSB) to provide the compact and efficient multi-colar, high sensitivity radiometer required to achieve its scientific objectives.

The SPEED camera is being developed to study the spectral energy distributions of high redshift galaxies using the Heinrich Hertz Telescope (HHT) in Arizona. SPEED requires a small cryogenic detector array of 2x2 pixels with each pixel having four frequency bands in the 150-350 GHz range. Here we describe the development of the detector array of these high efficiency FSBs. The FSB design provides the multi-pixel multi-spectral band capability required for SPEED in a compact stackable array. The SPEED bolometers will use proximity effect superconducting transition edge sensors as their temperature-sensing element allowing for higher levels of multiplexing in future applications.

TopHat is a balloon-borne instrument designed to operate on the top of a balloon. From this location, the experiment could efficiently observe using a clean beam with extremely low sidelobes. The experiment was designed to scan a large portion of the sky directly above it and to map the anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMBR) and thermal emission from galactic dust. The instrument used a one meter class telescope with a five band single pixel radiometer spanning the frequency range from 150-600 GHz. The radiometer used bolometric detectors operating at approx. 250 mK. Here, we will report on the flight of the TopHat experiment over Antarctica in January, 2001 and describe the scientific goals, the operation, and in-flight performance.

We have developed a model that allows us to defringe slitless 2-dimensional spectra taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). An IDL tool has been developed which allows the user to defringe any spectrum obtained with the G750L grating on STIS. This technique has been employed to model the fringing on Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) flight candidate CCDs.

The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) has a blackbody spectrum within 3.4 x 10(exp -8) ergs/sq cm/s/sr cm over the frequency range from 2 to 20/cm (5-0.5 mm). These measurements, derived from the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotomer (FIRAS) instrument on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, imply stringent limits on energy release in the early universe after t approximately 1 year and redshift z approximately 3 x 10(exp 6). The deviations are less than 0.30% of the peak brightness, with an rms value of 0.01%, and the dimensionless cosmological distortion parameters are limited to the absolute value of y is less than 2.5 x 10(exp -5) and the absolute value of mu is less than 3.3 x 10(exp -4) (95% confidence level). The temperature of the CMBR is 2.726 +/- 0.010 K (95% confidence level systematic).

The Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) instrument on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) has determined the dipole spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) from 2 to 20/cm. For each frequency the signal is decomposed by fitting to a monopole, a dipole, and a Galactic template for approximately 60% of the sky. The overall dipole spectrum fits the derivative of a Planck function with an amplitude of 3.343 +/- 0.016 mK (95% confidence level), a temperature of 2.714 +/- 0.022 K (95% confidence level), and an rms deviation of 6 x 10(exp -9) ergs/sq cm/s/sr cm limited by a detector and cosmic-ray noise. The monopole temperature is consistent with that determined by direct measurement in the accompanying article by Mather et al.

The Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) instrument on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite was designed to accurately measure the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) in the frequency range 1-95/cm with an angular resolution of 7 deg. We describe the calibration of this instrument, including the method of obtaining calibration data, reduction of data, the instrument model, fitting the model to the calibration data, and application of the resulting model solution to sky observations. The instrument model fits well for calibration data that resemble sky condition. The method of propagating detector noise through the calibration process to yield a covariance matrix of the calibrated sky data is described. The final uncertainties are variable both in frequency and position, but for a typical calibrated sky 2.6 deg square pixel and 0.7/cm spectral element the random detector noise limit is of order of a few times 10(exp -7) ergs/sq cm/s/sr cm for 2-20/cm, and the difference between the sky and the best-fit cosmic blackbody can be measured with a gain uncertainty of less than 3%.

We report the performance of a bolometric system designed to measure the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales from 0 deg 3 min to 3 deg. The system represents a collaborative effort combining a low-background 1 m diameter balloon-borne telescope with new multimode feed optics, a beam modulation mechanism with high stability, and a four-channel bolometric receiver with passbands centered near frequencies of 3 (90), 6 (180), 9 (270), and 12 (360) cm(exp -1) (GHz). The telescope was flown three times with the bolometric receiver and has demonstrated detector noise limited performance capable of reaching sensitivity levels of Delta(T)/T(sub CMB) is approximately equal to 10(exp -5) with detectors operated at T = 0.3 K.

The results of a search for anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background on angular scales near 1 deg are presented. Observations were simultaneously performed in bands centered at frequencies of 6, 9, and 12 per cm with a multifrequency bolometric receiver mounted on a balloon-borne telescope. The statistical sensitivity of the data is the highest reported to date at this angular scale, which is of critical importance for understanding the formation of structure in the universe. Signals in excess of random were observed in the data. The experiment, data analysis, and interpretation are described.

Included among the models tested are the monochromatic and Gaussian-shaped families, and those with power-law spectra for n values between -2 and 1. An upper bound is placed on the quadrupole anisotropy of Delta T/T less than 3.2 x 10 exp -5 rms, and an upper bound on scale-invariant (n = 1) fluctuations of a2 less than 4.5 x 10 exp -5 (95 percent confidence level). There is significant contamination of these data from Galactic emission, and improvement of the modeling of the Galaxy could yield a significant reduction of these upper bounds.

We report preliminary results from two balloon flights of a millimeter-wave telescope designed to measure anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales from 0.3 to 3 degrees. The receiver used in the first flight, in November 1989, was a dichroic, He-3-cooled bolometric photometer with passbands centered at 3, 6, 9, and 12/cm. The second flight, in July 1990, employed improved bolometric detectors. The 3/cm band was removed in order to increase the efficiency of the remaining bands. Preliminary analysis of the data gives a factor of 3 improvement in sensitivity over the first flight in the 6/cm band. Future plans include a new receiver to provide an additional factor of 5 improvement in sensitivity and a new balloon-borne telescope which is optimized for low-background bolometric detectors at millimeter wavelengths.

The design and performance of a 19-GHz one-horn maser radiometer is discussed. The antenna is a lensed, conical horn with 3-deg angular resolution. The radiometer is stabilized by chopping against an internal cold load. A novel chopping scheme allows continual calibration of maser gain fluatuations with only a modest penalty in noise. The method of calibrating this instrument is described. The instrument has been used to map the sky with an equivalent blackbody temperature sensitivity of 1 mK per 3 x 3 deg resolution element.
