Search

Particle interactions are key elements of many dynamical systems. In the context of systems described by a Boltzmann equation, such interactions may be described by a collision integral, a multidimensional integral over the momentum-phase space of the interaction. This integral is often simplified by assuming isotropic particle distributions; however, such an assumption places constraints on the dynamics of the system. This paper presents computational forms of the collision integral for relativistic, binary interactions at three levels of anisotropy, including a novel form in the isotropic case. All these forms are split into two parts, an absorption and an emission spectrum, which may be pre-calculated via numerical integration for simulation purposes. We demonstrate the use of these forms by comparison with the analytically integrated, isotropic emission spectrum of electron-positron annihilation, which are shown to agree to numerical precision. The emission spectrum is then further extended to axisymmetric particle distributions, where two-dimensional spectral maps can be generated to provide new insight., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Familiar concepts in physics, such as Lorentz symmetry, are expected to be broken at energies approaching the Planck energy scale as predicted by several quantum-gravity theories. However, such very large energies are unreachable by current experiments on Earth. Current and future Cherenkov telescope facilities may have the capability to measure the accumulated deformation from Lorentz symmetry for photons traveling over large distances via energy-dependent time delays. One of the best natural laboratories to test Lorentz Invariance Violation~(LIV) signatures are Gamma-ray bursts~(GRBs). The calculation of time delays due to the LIV effect depends on the cosmic expansion history. In most of the previous works calculating time lags due to the LIV effect, the standard $\Lambda$CDM (or concordance) cosmological model is assumed. In this paper, we investigate whether the LIV signature is significantly different when assuming alternatives to the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model. Specifically, we consider cosmological models with a non-trivial dark-energy equation of state ($w \neq -1$), such as the standard Chevallier-Polarski-Linder~(CPL) parameterization, the quadratic parameterization of the dark-energy equation of state, and the Pade parameterizations. We find that the relative difference in the predicted time lags is small, of the order of at most a few percent, and thus likely smaller than the systematic errors of possible measurements currently or in the near future., Comment: Accepted for publication in Class. Blazars are the most numerous type of observed high-energy gamma-ray emitters. However, their emission mechanisms and population properties are still not well-understood. Crucial to this understanding are their cosmological redshifts, which are often not easy to obtain. This presents a great challenge to the next-generation ground-based observatory for very-high-energy gamma rays, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which aims to detect a large number of distant blazars to study their intrinsic emission properties and to place tight constraints on the extragalactic background light density, amongst others. The successful investigation of these subjects needs a precise redshift determination. Motivated by these challenges, the CTA redshift task force initiated more than 3 years ago a spectroscopic observing program using some of the largest optical and infrared telescopes to measure the redshifts of a large fraction of blazars that are likely to be detected with CTA. In this proceedings, we give an overview of the CTA redshift task force, discuss some of the difficulties associated with measuring the redshifts of blazars and present our sample selection and observing strategies. Night Sky Background (NSB) is a complex phenomenon, consisting of all light detected by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) not attributable to Cherenkov light emission. Understanding the effect of NSB on cameras for the next-generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is important, as it affects the systematic errors on observations, the energy threshold, the thermal control of the cameras and the ability of the telescopes to operate under partial moonlight conditions. This capacity to observe under partial moonlight conditions is crucial for the CTA transient science programme, as it substantially increases the potential observing time. Using tools initially developed for H.E.S.S. (in combination withthe prototype CTA analysis package ctapipe) we will present predictions for the NSB present in images taken by the CTA Small Sized Telescope Camera (SSTCAM), showing that SSTCAM will likely be able to meet the associated CTA requirements. Many theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics predict the existence of axionlike particles (ALPs) that mix with photons in the presence of a magnetic field. Searching for the effects of ALP-photon mixing in gamma-ray observations of blazars has provided some of the strongest constraints on ALP parameter space so far. Previously, only individual sources have been analysed. We perform a combined analysis on $\textit{Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope data of three bright, flaring flat-spectrum radio quasars, with the blazar jets themselves as the dominant mixing region. For the first time, we include a full treatment of photon-photon dispersion within the jet, and account for the uncertainty in our B-field model by leaving the field strength free in the fitting. Overall, we find no evidence for ALPs, but are able to exclude the ALP parameters $m_a\lesssim200$ neV and $g_{a\gamma}\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ with 95\% confidence., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures; published Physical Review D; matches published version

Axionlike particles (ALPs) could mix with photons in the presence of astrophysical magnetic fields. Searching for this effect in gamma-ray observations of blazars has provided some of the strongest constraints on ALP parameter space so far. Previously, photon-photon dispersion of gamma-rays off of the CMB has been shown to be important for these calculations, and is universally included in ALP-photon mixing models. Here, we assess the effects of dispersion off of other photon fields within the blazar (produced by the accretion disk, the broad line region, the dust torus, starlight, and the synchrotron field) by modelling the jet and fields of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 and propagating ALPs through the model both with and without the full dispersion calculation. We find that the full dispersion calculation can strongly affect the mixing, particularly at energies above 100 GeV -- often reducing the ALP-photon conversion probability. Astrotourism brings new opportunities to generate sustainable socio-economic development, preserve cultural heritage, and inspire and educate the citizens of the globe. This form of tourism can involve many different activities, such as visiting observatories or travelling to remote areas to experience an evening under a pristine, dark night sky. Astronomy plays a major role in the scientific landscape of Namibia. Because of its excellent sky conditions, Namibia is home to ground-based observatories like the High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.), in operation since 2002. Located near the Gamsberg mountain, H.E.S.S. performs groundbreaking science by detecting very-high-energy gamma rays from astronomical objects. The fascinating stories behind many of them are featured regularly in the ``Source of the Month'', a blog-like format intended for the general public with more than 170 features to date. In addition to other online communication via social media, H.E.S.S. outreach activities have been covered locally, e.g. through `open days' and guided tours on the H.E.S.S. site itself. An overview of the H.E.S.S. outreach activities are presented in this contribution, along with discussions relating to the current landscape of astronomy outreach and education in Namibia. There has also been significant activity in the country in recent months, whereby astronomy is being used to further sustainable development via human capacity-building. Finally, as we take into account the future prospects of radio astronomy in the country, momentum for a wider range of astrophysics research is clearly building -- this presents a great opportunity for the astronomy community to come together to capitalise on this movement and support astronomy outreach, with the overarching aim to advance sustainable development in Namibia., Comment: ICRC 2021 conference proceedings, 9 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

New deep learning techniques present promising new analysis methods for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) such as the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In particular, the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) could provide a direct event classification method that uses the entire information contained within the Cherenkov shower image, bypassing the need to Hillas parameterise the image and allowing fast processing of the data. Existing work in this field has utilised images of the integrated charge from IACT camera photomultipliers, however the majority of current and upcoming generation IACT cameras have the capacity to read out the entire photosensor waveform following a trigger. As the arrival times of Cherenkov photons from Extensive Air Showers (EAS) at the camera plane are dependent upon the altitude of their emission and the impact distance from the telescope, these waveforms contain information potentially useful for IACT event classification. In this test-of-concept simulation study, we investigate the potential for using these camera pixel waveforms with new deep learning techniques as a background rejection method, against both proton and electron induced EAS. We find that a means of utilising their information is to create a set of seven additional 2-dimensional pixel maps of waveform parameters, to be fed into the machine learning algorithm along with the integrated charge image. Whilst we ultimately find that the only classification power against electrons is based upon event direction, methods based upon timing information appear to out-perform similar charge based methods for gamma/hadron separation. Namibia is world-renowned for its incredibly dark skies by the astronomy community, and yet, the country is not well recognised as a dark sky destination by tourists and travellers. Many theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics predict the existence of axionlike particles (ALPs) that mix with photons in the presence of a magnetic field. One prominent indirect method of searching for ALPs is to look for irregularities in blazar gamma-ray spectra caused by ALP-photon mixing in astrophysical magnetic fields. This requires the modelling of magnetic fields between Earth and the blazar. So far, only very simple models for the magnetic field in the blazar jet have been used. Here we investigate the effects of more complicated jet magnetic field configurations on these spectral irregularities, by imposing a magnetic field structure model onto the jet model proposed by Potter & Cotter. We simulate gamma-ray spectra of Mrk 501 with ALPs and fit them to no-ALP spectra, scanning the ALP and B-field configuration parameter space and show that the jet can be an important mixing region, able to probe new ALP parameter space around $m_a\sim$ 1-1000 neV and $g_{a\gamma}\gtrsim$ $5\times10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$. However, reasonable (i.e. consistent with observation) changes of the magnetic field structure can have a large effect on the mixing. For jets in highly magnetized clusters, mixing in the cluster can overpower mixing in the jet. With the coincident detection of a gamma-ray flare and a neutrino from the blazar TXS 0506+056, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have been put into focus as possible sources of the diffuse neutrino flux. We present a space and time-resolved model of the high-energy particle emission of a plasmoid assumed to travel along the axis of an AGN jet at relativistic speed. This was achieved by modifying the publicly available CRPropa (version 3.1+) propagation framework which in our work is capable of being applied to source physics on sub-kpc scales. The propagation of a population of primary protons is modelled in a purely turbulent magnetic field and we take into account interactions of these protons with photons scattered from the accretion disc, synchrotron radiation emitted by ambient relativistic electrons, as well with themselves and with other ambient matter. Our model produces a PeV-neutrino flare caused mainly by photo-hadronic interactions of primaries with the accretion disc field. Secondary high-energy gamma-rays partly attenuate with the ambient photon fields whose combined optical depths achieve their minimal opacity for photons of around 10 TeV. Thus, our model is well capable of producing neutrino flares with a significantly reduced emission of gamma-rays in jets with a hadronic jet component which in the future can be fit to specific AGN flare scenarios., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS on 01 June 2020 for publication

Time series analysis allows for the determination of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) and Probability Density Function (PDF) for astrophysical sources. The former of these illustrates the distribution of power at various timescales, typically taking a power-law form, while the latter characterises the distribution of the underlying stochastic physical processes, with Gaussian and lognormal functional forms both physically motivated. In this paper, we use artificial time series generated using the prescription of Timmer & Koenig to investigate connections between the PDF and PSD. PDFs calculated for these artificial light curves are less likely to be well described by a Gaussian functional form for steep (<-1) PSD spectral indices due to weak non-stationarity. Using the Fermi LAT monthly light curve of the blazar PKS2155-304 as an example, we prescribe and calculate a false positive rate which indicates how likely the PDF is to be attributed an incorrect functional form. Here, we generate large numbers of artificial light curves with intrinsically normally distributed PDFs and with statistical properties consistent with observations. These are used to evaluate the probabilities that either Gaussian or lognormal functional forms better describe the PDF. We use this prescription to show that PKS2155-304 requires a high prior probability of having a normally distributed PDF, P(G) >= 0.82, for the calculated PDF to prefer a Gaussian functional form over a lognormal. Recent developments in machine learning (ML) techniques present a promising new analysis method for high-speed imaging in astroparticle physics experiments, for example with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). In particular, the use of timing information with new machine learning techniques provides a novel method for event classification. Previous work in this field has utilised images of the integrated charge from IACT camera photomultipliers, but the majority of current and upcoming IACT cameras have the capacity to read out the entire photosensor waveform following a trigger. As the arrival times of Cherenkov photons from extensive air showers (EAS) at the camera plane are dependent upon the altitude of their emission, these waveforms contain information useful for IACT event classification. In this work, we investigate the potential for using these waveforms with ML techniques, and find that a highly effective means of utilising their information is to create a set of seven additional two dimensional histograms of waveform parameters to be fed into the machine learning algorithm along with the integrated charge image. This appears to be superior to using only these new ML techniques with the waveform integrated charge alone. Order of magnitude variability has been observed in the blazar sub-class of Active Galactic Nuclei on minute timescales. These high-energy flares are often difficult to explain with shock acceleration models due to the small size of the inferred emitting region, with recent particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations showing that magnetic reconnection is a promising alternative mechanism. Here, we present a macroscopic emission model physically motivated by PIC simulations, where the energy for particle acceleration originates from the reconnecting magnetic field. We track the radial growth and relative velocity of a reconnecting plasmoid, modelling particle acceleration and radiative losses from synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. To test the viability of magnetic reconnection as the mechanism behind rapid blazar flares we simultaneously fit our model to the observed light-curve and SED from the 2016 TeV flare of BL Lacertae. We find generally that, without considering external photons, reconnecting plasmoids are unable to produce Compton-dominant TeV flares and so cannot reproduce the observations due to overproduction of synchrotron emission. Additionally, problematically large plasmoids, comparable in size to the entire jet radius, are required to emit sufficient SSC gamma-rays to be observable. However, our plasmoid model can reproduce the rapid TeV lightcurve of the flare, demonstrating that reconnection is able to produce rapid, powerful TeV flares on observed timescales. We conclude that while reconnection can produce SSC flares on the correct timescales, the primary source of TeV emission cannot be SSC and the size of plasmoids required may be implausibly large., Comment: Replaced with accepted version. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is about to enter construction phase and one of its main key science projects is to perform an unbiased survey in search of extragalactic sources. We make use of both the latest blazar gamma--ray luminosity function and spectral energy distribution to derive the expected number of detectable sources for both the planned Northern and Southern arrays of the CTA observatory. We find that a shallow, wide survey of about 0.5 hour per field of view would lead to the highest number of blazar detections. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of axion-like particles and secondary gamma rays from propagating cosmic rays on the source count distribution, since these processes predict different spectral shape from standard extragalactic background light attenuation. We can generally expect more distant objects in the secondary gamma-ray scenario, while axion-like particles do not significantly alter the expected distribution. Yet, we find that, these results strongly depend on the assumed magnetic field strength during the propagation. Classical Novae were revealed as a surprise source of gamma-rays in Fermi LAT observations. During the first 8 years since the LAT was launched, 6 novae in total have been detected to > 5 sigma in gamma-rays, in contrast to the 69 discovered optically in the same period. We attempt to resolve this discrepancy by assuming all novae are gamma-ray emitters, and assigning peak one-day fluxes based on a flat distribution of the known emitters to a simulated population. To determine optical parameters, the spatial distribution and magnitudes of bulge and disc novae in M31 are scaled to the Milky Way, which we approximate as a disc with a 20 kpc radius and elliptical bulge with semi major axis 3 kpc and axis ratios 2:1 in the xy plane. We approximate Galactic reddening using a double exponential disc with vertical and radial scale heights of r_d = 5 kpc and z_d = 0.2 kpc, and demonstrate that even such a rudimentary model can easily reproduce the observed fraction of gamma-ray novae, implying that these apparently rare sources are in fact nearby and not intrinsically rare. Recently, studies of brown dwarfs have demonstrated that they possess strong magnetic fields and have the potential to produce radio and optical auroral emissions powered by magnetospheric currents. This emission provides the only window on magnetic fields in the coolest brown dwarfs and identifying additional benchmark objects is key to constraining dynamo theory in this regime. To this end, we conducted a new red optical (6300 - 9700 Angstrom) survey with the Keck telescopes looking for H-alpha emission from a sample of late L dwarfs and T dwarfs. Our survey gathered optical spectra for 29 targets, 18 of which did not have previous optical spectra in the literature, greatly expanding the number of moderate resolution (R~2000) spectra available at these spectral types. Combining our sample with previous surveys, we confirm an H-alpha detection rate of 9.2 (+3.5/-2.1) % for L and T dwarfs in the optical spectral range of L4 - T8. This detection rate is consistent with the recently measured detection rate for auroral radio emission from Kao et al. (2016), suggesting that geometrical selection effects due to the beaming of the radio emission are small or absent. We also provide the first detection of H-alpha emission from 2MASS 0036+1821, previously notable as the only electron cyclotron maser radio source without a confirmed detection of H-alpha emission. Accreting black holes produce powerful relativistic plasma jets which emit radiation across all observable wavelengths but the details of the initial acceleration and confinement of the jet are uncertain. We apply an innovative new model that allows us to determine key properties of the acceleration zone via multi-frequency observations. The central component of the model is a relativistic steady-state fluid flow, and the emission from physically distinct regions can be seen to contribute to different energy bands in the overall spectrum. By fitting with unprecedented accuracy to 42 simultaneous multiwavelength blazar spectra we are able to constrain the location of the brightest synchrotron emitting region, and show that there must be a linear relation between the jet power and the radius of the brightest region of the jet. We also find a correlation between the length of the accelerating region and the maximum bulk Lorentz factor of the jet and find evidence for a bimodal distribution of accretion rates in the blazar population. This allows us to put constraints on the basic dynamical and structural properties of blazar jets and to understand the underlying physical differences which result in the blazar sequence., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted. We study the velocity dispersion profiles of the nuclei of NGC 1326, 2685, 5273 and 5838 in the CO first overtone band. There is evidence for a black hole (BH) in NGC 1326 and 5838. Gas is seen flowing out of the nuclear region of NGC 5273. We put upper limits on the nuclear BHs responsible for its activity and that of NGC 2685., Comment: to appear in ApSS

The limits for adaptive-optics (AO) imaging at high contrast and high resolution are determined by residual phase errors from non-common-path aberrations not sensed by the wavefront sensor, especially for integral field spectrographs, where phase diversity techniques are complicated by the image slicer. We present the first application of kernel phase-based wavefront sensing to ground-based AO, where an asymmetric pupil mask and a single image are sufficient to map aberrations up to high order. We push toward internally diffraction-limited performance with the Oxford-SWIFT integral field spectrograph coupled with the PALM-3000 extreme AO system on the Palomar 200-inch telescope. This represents the first observation in which the PALM-3000 + SWIFT internal point-spread-function has closely approached the Airy pattern. While this can only be used on SWIFT with an internal stimulus source, as at short wavelengths the uncorrected atmospheric wavefront errors are still > 1 radian, this nevertheless demonstrates the feasibility of detecting non-common-path errors with this method as an active optics paradigm for near-infrared, AO-corrected instruments at Palomar. We note that this is a particularly promising approach for correcting integral field spectrographs, as the diversity of many narrowband images provides strong constraints on the wavefront error estimate, and the average of reconstructions from many narrow bands can be used to improve overall reconstruction quality., Comment: 8 Pages, 3 Figures, submitted to SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2014

Blazar spectra are one of the most important windows into the physical processes occurring along jets. The spectrum, composed from the different emitting regions along the jet, allows us to constrain the physical conditions in the jet. I present my work modelling blazar spectra using an extended inhomogeneous jet model with an accelerating, magnetically dominated, parabolic base transitioning to a slowly decelerating, conical section motivated by observations, simulations and theory. We set the inner geometry of our multi-zone model using observations of the jet in M87 which transitions from parabolic to conical at 10^5 Schwarzschild radii. This model is able to reproduce quiescent blazar spectra very well across all wavelengths (including radio observations) for a sample of 42 BL Lacs and FSRQs. Using this inhomogeneous model we are able to constrain the location at which the synchrotron emission is brightest in these jets by fitting to the optically thick to thin synchrotron break. We find that the radius of the jet at which the synchrotron emission is brightest (where the jet first approaches equipartition) scales approximately linearly with the jet power. We also find a correlation between the length of the accelerating, parabolic section of the jet and the maximum bulk Lorentz factor. In agreement with previous work we find that BL Lacs are low power blazars whereas FSRQs are high power blazars. In this paper we investigate the properties of a sample of six BL Lacs by fitting their spectra using our inhomogeneous jet model with an accelerating, magnetically dominated, parabolic base, which transitions to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry based on observations of M87. Our model is able to fit very well to the simultaneous multiwavelength spectra of all the BL Lacs including radio observations. We find that the BL Lacs have lower jet powers and bulk Lorentz factors than the sample of Compton-dominant blazars investigated in Paper III, consistent with the blazar sequence. Excitingly, we find a correlation between the radius at which the jet first comes into equipartition and the jet power, in agreement with our prediction from Paper II. We interpret this result as one of two physical scenarios: a universal jet geometry which scales linearly with black hole mass or a dichotomy in Eddington accretion rates between flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacs. If we assume that the jet geometry of all blazars scales linearly with black hole mass then we find a plausible range of masses (10^7-10^10 solar masses). We find that the quiescent gamma-ray spectrum of Markarian 421 is best fitted by scattering of external CMB photons. We are unable to fit the spectrum using synchrotron self-Compton emission due to strong gamma-ray absorption via pair production even using a compact, rapidly decelerating, jet with a very large bulk Lorentz factor (50), as has been suggested recently. Finally, we fit to the SEDs of the four high power HSP BL Lacs recently found by Padovani et al. 2012. In this paper we develop the extended jet model of Potter & Cotter to model the simultaneous multi-wavelength spectra of six Compton-dominant blazars. We include an accelerating parabolic base transitioning to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry set by observations of M87 and consistent with simulations and theory. We investigate several jet models and find that the optically thick to thin synchrotron break in the radio spectrum requires the jet to first come into equipartition at large distances along the jet (10^5 Schwarzschild radii), consistent with the observed transition from parabolic to conical in the jet of M87. We confirm this result analytically and calculate the expected frequency core-shift relations for the models under consideration. We find that a parabolic jet transitioning to a ballistic conical jet, which starts in equipartition and becomes more particle dominated at larger distances, fits the multiwavelength data of the six blazars well, whilst an adiabatic equipartition conical section requires very large bulk Lorentz factors to reproduce the Compton-dominance of the blazars. We find that all these blazars require high power, high bulk Lorentz factor jets observed close to the line of sight as we expect from the blazar sequence and consistent with the results from Paper II. The inverse-Compton emission in our fits is due to inverse-Compton scattering of high-redshift CMB photons at large distances along the jet due to the high bulk Lorentz factors of the jets. We postulate a new interpretation of the blazar sequence based on the radius of the transition region of the jet (where the jet is brightest in synchrotron emission) scaling linearly with black hole mass., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on spectroscopic observations covering most of the 475 BL Lacs in the 2nd Fermi LAT catalog of AGN. Including archival measurements (correcting several erroneous literature values) we now have spectroscopic redshifts for 44% of the BL Lacs. We establish firm lower redshift limits via intervening absorption systems and statistical lower limits via searches for host galaxies for an additional 51% of the sample leaving only 5% of the BL Lacs unconstrained. The new redshifts raise the median spectroscopic z from 0.23 to 0.33 and include redshifts as large as z=2.471. Spectroscopic redshift minima from intervening absorbers have ~ z= 0.70, showing a substantial fraction at large z and arguing against strong negative evolution. We find that detected BL Lac hosts are bright ellipticals with black hole masses M_\bullet ~ 10^{8.5-9}, substantially larger than the mean of optical AGN and LAT Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar samples. A slow increase in M_\bullet with z may be due to selection bias. We find that the power-law dominance of the optical spectrum extends to extreme values, but this does not strongly correlate with the gamma-ray properties, suggesting that strong beaming is the primary cause of the range in continuum dominance., Comment: 14 pages; Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

In this paper we develop the jet model of Potter & Cotter (2012) to include a magnetically dominated accelerating parabolic base transitioning to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry set by recent radio observations of M87. We conserve relativistic energy-momentum and particle number along the jet and calculate the observed synchrotron emission from the jet by calculating the integrated line of sight synchrotron opacity through the jet in the rest frame of each section of plasma. We calculate the inverse-Compton emission from synchrotron, CMB, accretion disc, starlight, broad line region, dusty torus and narrow line region photons by transforming into the rest frame of the plasma along the jet. We fit our model to simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the Compton-dominant FSRQ type blazar PKS0227-369, with a jet geometry set by M87 and an accelerating bulk Lorentz factor consistent with simulations and theory. We investigate models in which the jet comes into equipartition at different distances along the jet and equipartition is maintained via the conversion of jet bulk kinetic energy into particle acceleration. We find that the jet must still be magnetically dominated within the BLR and cannot be in equipartition due to the severe radiative energy losses. The model fits the observations, including radio data, very well if the jet comes into equipartition outside the BLR within the dusty torus (1.5pc) or at further distances (34pc). We find that our fit in which the jet comes into equipartition furthest along the jet, which has a jet with the geometry of M87 scaled linearly with black hole mass, has an inferred black hole mass close to previous estimates. This implies that the jet of PKS0227 might be well described by the same jet geometry as M87., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In preparation for a study of their circumnuclear gas we have surveyed 60% of a complete sample of elliptical galaxies within 75 Mpc that are radiosources. Some 20% of our nuclear spectra have infrared emission lines, mostly Paschen lines, Brackett gamma and [FeII]. We consider the influence of radio power and black hole mass in relation to the spectra. In the first of a series of papers investigating emission from blazar jets from radio to high-energy {\gamma}-rays, we revisit the class of models where the jet has a uniform conical ballistic structure. We argue that by using simple developments of these models, in the context of new multi-frequency data extending to gamma-ray energies, valuable insights may be obtained into the properties that fully realistic models must ultimately have. In this paper we consider the synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton emission from the jet, modelling the recent simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of BL Lac. This is the first time these components have been fitted simultaneously for a blazar using a conical jet model. In the model we evolve the electron population dynamically along the jet taking into account the synchrotron and inverse-Compton losses. The inverse-Compton emission is calculated using the Klein-Nishina cross section and a relativistic transformation into the jet frame, and we explicitly show the seed photon population. We integrate synchrotron opacity along the line of sight through the jet plasma, taking into account the emission and opacity of each section of the jet. In agreement with previous studies of radio emission, we find that a conical jet model which conserves magnetic energy produces the characteristic blazar flat radio spectrum, however, we do not require any fine-tuning of the model to achieve this. Of particular note, in our model fit to BL Lac--which at ~10^37W is a relatively low jet-power source--we find no requirement for significant re-acceleration within the jet to explain the observed spectrum., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on optical spectroscopy of 165 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) in the Fermi 1LAC sample, which have helped allow a nearly complete study of this population. Fermi FSRQ show significant evidence for non-thermal emission even in the optical; the degree depends on the gamma-ray hardness. They also have smaller virial estimates of hole mass than the optical quasar sample. This appears to be largely due to a preferred (axial) view of the gamma-ray FSRQ and non-isotropic (H/R ~ 0.4) distribution of broad-line velocities. Even after correction for this bias, the Fermi FSRQ show higher mean Eddington ratios than the optical population. A comparison of optical spectral properties with Owens Valley Radio Observatory radio flare activity shows no strong correlation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to study gamma-ray blazars. To capitalize on this opportunity, beginning in late 2007, about a year before the start of LAT science operations, we began a large-scale, fast-cadence 15 GHz radio monitoring program with the 40-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). This program began with the 1158 northern (declination>-20 deg) sources from the Candidate Gamma-ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS) and now encompasses over 1500 sources, each observed twice per week with a ~4 mJy (minimum) and 3% (typical) uncertainty. Here, we describe this monitoring program and our methods, and present radio light curves from the first two years (2008 and 2009). As a first application, we combine these data with a novel measure of light curve variability amplitude, the intrinsic modulation index, through a likelihood analysis to examine the variability properties of subpopulations of our sample. We demonstrate that, with high significance (7-sigma), gamma-ray-loud blazars detected by the LAT during its first 11 months of operation vary with about a factor of two greater amplitude than do the gamma-ray-quiet blazars in our sample. We also find a significant (3-sigma) difference between variability amplitude in BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), with the former exhibiting larger variability amplitudes. Finally, low-redshift (z<1) FSRQs are found to vary more strongly than high-redshift FSRQs, with 3-sigma significance. These findings represent an important step toward understanding why some blazars emit gamma-rays while others, with apparently similar properties, remain silent., Comment: 23 pages, 24 figures. We have detected an Halpha bow shock nebula around PSR J1741-2054, a pulsar discovered through its GeV gamma-ray pulsations. The pulsar is only ~1.5" behind the leading edge of the shock. Optical spectroscopy shows that the nebula is non-radiative, dominated by Balmer emission. The Halpha images and spectra suggest that the pulsar wind momentum is equatorially concentrated and implies a pulsar space velocity ~150km/s, directed 15+/-10deg out of the plane of the sky. The complex Halpha profile indicates that different portions of the post-shock flow dominate line emission as gas moves along the nebula and provide an opportunity to study the structure of this unusual slow non-radiative shock under a variety of conditions. CXO ACIS observations reveal an X-ray PWN within this nebula, with a compact ~2.5" equatorial structure and a trail extending several arcmin behind. Together these data support a close (<0.5kpc) distance, a spin geometry viewed edge-on and highly efficient gamma-ray production for this unusual, energetic pulsar., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We present optical spectra and high-resolution multi-wavelength radio observations of the compact steep-spectrum radio source MRC B1221-423 (z=0.1706). MRC B1221-423 is a very young (~10^5 yr), powerful radio source which is undergoing a tidal interaction with a companion galaxy. We find strong evidence of interaction between the AGN and its environment. The radio morphology is highly distorted, showing a dramatic interaction between the radio jet and the host galaxy, with the jet being turned almost back on itself. H I observations show strong absorption against the nucleus at an infall velocity of ~250 km/s compared to the stellar velocity, as well as a second, broader component which may represent gas falling into the nucleus. Optical spectra show that star formation is taking place across the whole system. Broad optical emission lines in the nucleus show evidence of outflow. Our observations confirm that MRC B1221-423 is a young radio source in a gas-rich nuclear environment, and that there was a time delay of a few x 100 Myr between the onset of star formation and the triggering of the AGN., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We report on HET and Palomar 5 m spectroscopy of recently identified $\gamma$-ray blazars in the {\it Fermi} LAT Bright Source List. These data provide identifications for 10 newly discovered $\gamma$-ray flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ) and six new BL Lacs plus improved spectroscopy for six additional BL Lacs. We substantially improve the identification completeness of the bright LAT blazars and give new redshifts and $z$ constraints, new estimates of the black hole masses and new measurements of the optical SED., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We describe a uniform all-sky survey of bright blazars, selected primarily by their flat radio spectra, that is designed to provide a large catalog of likely gamma-ray AGN. The defined sample has 1625 targets with radio and X-ray properties similar to those of the EGRET blazars, spread uniformly across the |b| > 10 deg sky. We also report progress toward optical characterization of the sample; of objects with known R < 23, 85% have been classified and 81% have measured redshifts. We have obtained deep optical spectroscopic data of the highest-redshift cluster candidate (z ~ 1.4, CVB13) selected by Van Breukelen et al. (2006) in a photometric optical/infrared catalogue of the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. The data, which comprise 104 targeted galaxies, were taken with the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck 2 telescope and yielded 31 secure redshifts in the range 1.25 < z < 1.54 within a 7' x 4' field centred on CVB13. Instead of one massive cluster at z = 1.4, we find evidence for three projected structures at z = 1.40, z = 1.45, and z = 1.48. The most statistically robust of these structures, at z = 1.454, has six spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. Its total mass is estimated at > 10^14 M_sun and it may therefore be termed a cluster. There is an X-ray source at the cluster position which is marginally spatially resolved but whose X-ray spectrum is too hard to be thermal cluster emission. Its origin could be the summed X-ray emission from active galaxies in, and projected onto, the cluster. Serendipitously we have discovered a cluster at z = 1.28 with a mass of > 10^14 M_sun at the same position on the sky, comprising six spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies and at least one additional radio source. The selection of CVB13 for the cluster catalogue was evidently aided by the superposition of other, presumably lower-mass, structures, whereas the single cluster at z = 1.28 contained too few galaxies to be isolated by the same algorithm. 9C J1503+4528 is a very young CSS radio galaxy, with an age of order 10^4 years. This source is therefore an ideal laboratory for the study ofthe intrinsic host galaxy/IGM properties, interactions between the radio source and surrounding ISM, links between star formation and AGN activity and the radio source triggering mechanism. Here we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of this source, considering each of these aspects of radio source physics. We find that shock ionization by the young radio source is important in the central regions of the galaxy on scales similar to that of the radio source itself, whilst evidence for an AGN ionization cone is observed at greater distances. Line and continuum features require the presence of a young stellar population, the best-fit model for which implies an age of 5x10^6 years, significantly older than the radio source. Most interestingly, the relative sizes of radio source and extended emission line region suggest that both AGN and radio source are triggered at approximately the same time. If both the triggering of the radio source activity and the formation of the young stellar population had the same underlying cause, this source provides a sequence for the events surrounding the triggering process. We propose that the AGN activity in 9C J1503+4528 was causedby a relatively minor interaction, and that a super-massive black hole powering the radio jets must have been in place before the AGN was triggered., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13 pages, 13 figures (3 in colour), 2 tables. We present near-IR spectroscopy of three Extremely Red Objects (EROs) using the OHS/CISCO spectrograph at Subaru telescope. One target exhibits a strong emission line which we identify as H-alpha at z = 1.34. Using new and existing ground-based optical and near-IR imaging, and archival HST imaging, we argue that this target is essentially an elliptical galaxy, with an old stellar population of around 4E11 solar masses, but having a dust-enshrouded star-forming component with a SFR of some 50--100 solar masses per yr. There is no evidence that the galaxy contains an AGN. Analysis of a further two targets, which do not exhibit any features in our near-IR spectra, suggests that one is a quiescent galaxy in the redshift range 1.2 < z < 1.6, but that the other cannot be conclusively categorised as either star-forming or quiescent. Even though our first target has many of the properties of an old elliptical, the ongoing star formation means that it cannot have formed_all_ of its stellar population at high redshift. While we cannot infer any robust values for the star formation rate in ellipticals at z > 1 from this one object, we argue that the presence of an object with such a high SFR in such a small sample suggests that a non-negligible fraction of the elliptical galaxy population may have formed a component of their stellar population at redshifts z ~ 1--2. We present BVRIK images and spectroscopic observations of the z=0.17 host galaxy of the compact steep-spectrum radio source MRC B1221-423. This is a young (~1e5 yr) radio source with double lobes lying well within the visible galaxy. The host galaxy is undergoing tidal interaction with a nearby companion, with shells, tidal tails, and knotty star-forming regions all visible. We analyse the images of the galaxy and its companion pixel-by-pixel, first using colour-magnitude diagrams, and then fitting stellar population models to the spectral energy distributions of each pixel. The pixels separate cleanly in colour-magnitude diagrams, with pixels of different colours occupying distinct regions of the host galaxy and its companion. We find three distinct groups of ages: an old population in the outskirts of the host galaxy; an intermediate-age population around the nucleus and tidal tail, and a young population in the nucleus and blue "knots". The correlation of age with position suggests the two most recent episodes were triggered by tidal interactions with the companion galaxy. The evidence points to the AGN in the centre of B1221-423 having been "caught in the act" of ignition. However, none of the components we have identified is as young as the radio source, implying that the delay between the interaction and the triggering of the AGN is at least 300 My., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Radio relic sources in galaxy clusters are often described as the remnants of powerful radio galaxies. Here we develop a model for the evolution of such relics after the jets cease to supply energy to the lobes. This includes the treatment of a relic overpressured with respect to its gaseous surroundings even after the jets switch off. We also determine the radio emission of relics for a large variety of assumptions. We take into account the evolution of the strength of the magnetic field during the phase of relativistic particle injection into the lobes. The resulting spectra show mild steepening at around 1 GHz but avoid any exponential spectral cut-offs. The model calculations are used to fit the observed spectra of six radio relics. The quality of the fits is excellent for {\it all} models discussed. Unfortunately, this implies that it is virtually impossible to determine any of the important source parameters from the observed radio emission alone., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present the results of radio, optical and near-infrared observations of the field of TOC J0233.3+3021, a cluster of milliJansky radiosources from the TexOx Cluster survey. In an observation of this field with the Ryle Telescope (RT) at 15 GHz, we measure a decrement in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) of $-675 \pm 95 \mu$Jy on the RT's $\approx$ 0.65 k$\lambda$ baseline. Using optical and infrared imaging with the McDonald 2.7-m Smith Reflector, Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope and UKIRT, we identify the host galaxies of five of the radiosources and measure magnitudes of $R \approx 24$, $J \approx 20$, $K \approx 18$. The CMB decrement is consistent with the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of a massive cluster of galaxies, which if modelled as a spherical King profile of core radius $\theta_C = 20^{\prime\prime}$ has a central temperature decrement of $900 \mu$K. The magnitudes and colours of the galaxies are consistent with those of old ellipticals at $z \sim 1$. We therefore conclude that TOC J0233.3+3021 is a massive, high redshift cluster. These observations add to the growing evidence for a significant population of massive clusters at high redshift, and demonstrate the effectiveness of combining searches for AGN `signposts' to clusters with the redshift-independence of the SZ effect., Comment: Six pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present optical spectra of the nuclei of seven luminous (P(178MHz) > 10**25 W Hz**(-1) Sr**(-1)) nearby (z<0.08) radiogalaxies, which mostly correspond to the FR II class. In two cases, Hydra A and 3C 285, the Balmer and 4000A break indices constrain the spectral types and luminosity classes of the stars involved, revealing that the blue spectra are dominated by blue supergiant and/or giant stars. The ages derived for the last burst of star formation in Hydra A are between 7 and 40 Myr, and in 3C 285 about 10 Myr. The rest of the narrow-line radiogalaxies (four) have 4000A break and metallic indices consistent with those of elliptical galaxies. The only broad-line radiogalaxy in our sample, 3C 382, has a strong featureless blue continuum and broad emission lines that dilute the underlying blue stellar spectra. We are able to detect the Ca II triplet in absorption in the seven objects, with good quality data for only four of them. The strengths of the absorptions are similar to those found in normal elliptical galaxies, but these values are both consistent with single stellar populations of ages as derived from the Balmer absorption and break strengths, and, also, with mixed young+old populations., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We discuss prospects for cluster detection via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in a blank field survey with the proposed interferometer array, the Arcminute MicroKelvin Imager (AMI). Clusters of galaxies selected in the SZ effect probe cosmology and structure formation with little observational bias, because the effect directly measures integrated gas pressure, and does so independently of cluster redshift. We use hydrodynamical simulations in combination with the Press-Schechter expression to simulate SZ cluster sky maps. These are used with simulations of the observation process to gauge the expected SZ cluster counts. Even with a very conservative choice of parameters we find that AMI will discover at least several tens of clusters every year with total mass down to 10^14 solar masses; the numbers depends on factors such as the mean matter density, the density fluctuation power spectrum and cluster gas evolution. The AMI survey itself can distinguish between these to some degree, and parameter degeneracies are largely eliminated given optical and X-ray follow-up of these clusters; this will also permit direct investigation of cluster physics and what drives the evolution., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS. We have carried out a study to simulate distant clusters of galaxies in deep ground-based optical images. We find that when model galaxies are added to deep images obtained with the William Herschel Telescope, there is considerable scatter of the recovered galaxy colours away from the model values; this scatter is larger than that expected from photometric errors and is significantly affected by confusion, due to ground-based seeing, between objects in the field. In typical conditions of $\approx$ 1-arcsec seeing, the combination of confusion and incompleteness causes a considerable underestimation of the true surface density of $z \approx 3$ galaxies. We present deep optical images of the PC1643+4631 field obtained at the WHT. This field contains two quasars at redshifts z=3.79 & 3.83 and a cosmic microwave background (CMB) decrement detected with the Ryle Telescope. The images are in U,G,V,R and I filters, and are complete to 25th magnitude in R and G and to 25.5 in U. The isophotal galaxy counts are consistent with the results of Metcalde et al. (1996), Hogg et al. (1997), and others. We find an excess of robust high-redshift Ly-break galaxy candidates with 25.0

In an investigation of the cause of the cosmic microwave background decrement in the field of the z = 3.8 quasar pair PC1643+4631, we have carried out a study to photometrically estimate the redshifts of galaxies in deep multi-colour optical images of the field taken with the WHT. To examine the possibility that a massive cluster of galaxies lies in the field, we have attempted to recover simulated galaxies with intrinsic colours matching those of the model galaxies used in the photometric redshift estimation. We find that when such model galaxies are added to our images, there is considerable scatter of the recovered galaxy redshifts away from the model value; this scatter is larger than that expected from photometric errors and is the result of confusion, simply due to ground-based seeing, between objects in the field. We have also compared the likely efficiency of the photometric redshift technique against the colour criteria used to select z>3 galaxies via the strong colour signature of the Lyman-limit break. We find that these techniques may significantly underestimate the true surface density of z>3, due to confusion between the high-redshift galaxies and other objects near the line of sight. We argue that the actual surface density of z=3 galaxies may be as much as 6 times greater than that estimated by previous ground-based studies, and note that this conclusion is consistent with the surface density of high-redshift objects found in the HDF. We present the first results of a deep imaging programme to identify the system responsible for the Cosmic Microwave Background decrement in the field towards the z = 3.8 quasar pair PC1643+4631 A&B. Using the prime focus camera at the William Herschel Telescope we have carried out deep multicolour optical imaging to search for candidate cluster galaxies at extremely high redshift. Using UGR colour selection we find the surface density of z > 3 Lyman-break galaxy candidates is at least as great as that found in the field of the z = 3.1 structure discovered by Steidel et al. We have obtained redshifts and infrared images for a sample of faint B2/6C radio sources whose fluxes are about six times fainter than those of sources in the bright 3C sample. We now have unambiguous redshifts for 90% of the sources, making this the first faint radio sample with such complete redshift information. We find that the infrared Hubble diagrams (K versus z) of the 3C sample and the B2/6C sample are similar at a low redshift (z < 0.6), but by a redshift about 1 the 6C/B2 galaxies are on average about 0.6 mags fainter in the K-band than 3C galaxies at the same redshift. This suggests that the bright K-magnitudes of 3C galaxies at a redshift of about 1 are not the result of stellar evolution, but of a correlation between infrared and radio luminosity. We also find that the infrared stuctures of B2/6C galaxies at z=1 are less clearly aligned with their radio structures than 3C galaxies at this redshift, implying that the strength of the alignment effect depends on radio luminosity. Finally, above a redshift of 2 we find that the dispersion in the K-z relation of the B2/6C sample is about 2.7 times greater than that at low redshift, a result which is expected if at these redshifts we are beginning to penetrate into the epoch in which radio galaxies formed., Comment: 26 pages (TEX), 39 postscript figures (six of the larger figures can be obtained from ftp://ftp.astro.cf.ac.uk/pub/sae), 5 latex tables, to appear in MNRAS

In a companion paper (Paper I: Jones et al. 1996) we report the discovery of a cosmic microwave background decrement, indicative of a distant cluster with mass ~10^{15} solar masses, towards the quasar pair PC1643+4631A&B (z=3.79,3.83, separation 198''). To search for the cluster responsible, we have obtained R-, J- and K-band images of the field and have also carried out optical spectroscopy of selected objects in it. No such cluster is evident in these images. Assuming the cluster causing the decrement is similar to massive clusters already known, our magnitude limits imply that it must lie about or beyond z=1. This provides independent support for the X-ray-based distance argument of Paper I. The cluster must gravitationally lens objects behind it; for a cluster z around 1-2, the Einstein-ring radius for sources at z ~= 3.8 is ~ 100''. Simple modelling, producing simultaneously the S-Z effect and the lensing, shows that the source positions of quasars A and B lie within ~10'' of each other and may indeed be coincident. The two quasar spectra are found to be remarkably similar apart from their one-percent redshift difference. Assuming A and B are images of a single quasar, we present a possible explanation of this difference., Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 2 PostScript figures. To appear in Astrophysical Journal Letters
