The region atop the core-mantle boundary (CMB) contains numerous heterogeneities that have been imaged using seismology. Ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs) are extremely slow seismic anomalies that are tens of kilometres thick. Their origins are not known, but possibilities include iron-enrichment, the presence of partial melt, or both. It is also possible that ULVZs are part of an extensive layer of low seismic velocities that, being too thin to be robustly detected, has thus far eluded detection.We test the visibility of such a layer to seismic data at different wavelengths, utilising both high-frequency core diffracted waves and normal mode centre frequencies. Using forward modelling we test the effect of a thin slow layer atop the CMB, finding that PKKPdiff, which diffracts three times at the CMB, is incredibly sensitive to such a structure, as are the centre frequencies of some normal modes. We compile datasets of PKKPdiff observations and normal mode centre frequencies and find that not only is a thin seismically anomalous layer compatible with observations, but that both data types are better fitted by the inclusion of an approximately single kilometre thick global layer with ULVZ-like velocity reductions. Nevertheless substantial trade-offs, both between different seismic parameters and the thickness, do remain.Our results cannot uniquely constrain the origin or composition of such a layer, however the possible presence of this structure atop the CMB could have profound consequences for core-mantle chemical interaction, core-mantle coupling, CMB heat flow and convection in both the mantle and outer core.

Ultra Low Velocity Zones (ULVZs) are patches on the core-mantle boundary that are highly anomalous in both Vs (10~40%) and Vp (5~20%). Whilst detections of these regions have been going on for several decades, four extremely large ULVZs, dubbed 'mega-ULVZs', have been detected near Hawaii, Samoa, Iceland, and Galapagos in the last decade. It is hypothesised that such mega-ULVZs are co-located with mantle plumes and may be the CMB anchor of hotspots.We performed a global search for ULVZs with Sdiff, of events Mw5.7+ at all depths between 1990-2022. From this, we have significantly augmented the catalogue of events sampling the ULVZs near Hawaii, Iceland, and Galapagos; and discover two previously unknown ULVZs in the south Atlantic near St Helena [Davison et al, in prep] and near Macdonald [Li et al, in prep]. Additionally, we have also found what we believe to be the first direct Sdiff detection of the Samoan ULVZ, which was originally detected and characterised using SPdKS.Furthermore, we have also identified a new mega-ULVZ approximately 15 degrees northeast of Marquesas which does not appear to be related to any hotspot or mantle plume. This ULVZ was detected using higher frequency Sdiff waveforms, 5-12s as opposed to the more typical 10-20s, indicating it is thinner than other mega-ULVZs previously detected. Initial characterisation using a Bayesian inversion with a 2D wavefront tracker forward model [Martin et al, 2023] suggests the anomaly is around 200km in diameter, 8-10km thick, -30 to -40% dVs, and lies on or near the LLSVP boundary., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

More than one hundred years of seismological, mineralogical and geophysical research have shed light on the properties and evolution of Earth’s core. A liquid outer core, hosting the geodynamo, and a solid inner core, growing slowly at the expense of the outer core, together span roughly half of Earth’s diameter. The presence of a light-element enriched layer at the core-mantle interface, along with layering and lateral variation deeper in the core remain areas of active investigation.In contrast, the first confirmed marsquakes, detected by the InSight mission, were recorded only in 2019. Thus we have enjoyed only a few years of in-situ seismic observations of waves propagating through Mars’ interior. With well over a thousand seismic events detected in InSight’s operational life, seismic waves have been detected from marsquakes and impacts at large and small epicentral distances. Two seismic events have permitted the detection of core-transiting seismic (SKS) waves. These observations have enabled the estimation of the elastic properties of Mars’ liquid core and allowed inferences to be made about its composition, which is enriched in light elements when compared to Earth. This presentation will highlight new discoveries about Mars’ core and put them into context by comparing them with known and unknown features of Earth’s core., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The contribution of mantle upwellings of varying spatial extent to Cenozoic magmatism across Africa is debated because geochemical and seismological tools used to interrogate them are primarily sensitive to either composition or temperature. Thermochemical conditions control the depth at which mantle materials undergo phase changes, which cause seismic discontinuities. Mapping seismic discontinuities across the mantle transition zone (MTZ) and below provides insight into the variable thermochemical nature of upwellings. We present observations of seismic discontinuities beneath Africa obtained from a compilation of P-to-s receiver functions (using Pds, PPds, and PKPds phases), recorded at seismograph networks across Africa between 1990-2019. We exploit a recent high-resolution African continental P-wavespeed model to migrate our receiver functions to depth in a common conversion point stack. Cenozoic magmatism along the East African Rift is largely underlain by a thin MTZ implying a contribution to rift magmatism from sources at or below MTZ depths. The Ethiopian rift is underlain by a depressed d410 and uplifted d660 indicating a moderate positive thermal anomaly at MTZ depths (~100-150K). The southern East African Rift displays a greater d410 depression and a regional d660 depression, suggesting a stronger thermochemical anomaly at MTZ depths. Here, seismic conversions at ~1025km depth are collocated with slow wavespeeds within the African Superplume, corroborating evidence for a compositional anomaly. We suggest that the contribution of a purely thermal plume directly below Ethiopia augments conditions for mantle melting and rifting. Distinct upwellings may also affect the MTZ below Cenozoic magmatism in Cameroon and Madagascar.

Geochemical observations of ocean island and mid-ocean ridge basalts suggest that abundances of heat-producing elements (HPEs: U, Th, and K) vary within the mantle. Combined with bulk silicate Earth models and constraints on the Earth's heat budget, these observations suggest the presence of a more enriched (potentially deep and undepleted) reservoir in the mantle. Such a reservoir may be related to seismically observed deep mantle structures known as large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs). LLSVPs might represent thermochemical piles of an intrinsically denser composition, and many studies have shown such piles to remain stable over hundreds of Myr or longer. However, few studies have examined if thermochemical piles can remain stable if they are enriched in HPEs, a necessary condition for them to constitute an enriched HPE reservoir. We conduct a suite of mantle convection simulations to examine the effect of HPE enrichment up to 25× the ambient mantle on pile stability. Model results are evaluated against present-day pile morphology and tested for resulting seismic signatures using self-consistent potential pile compositions. We find that stable piles can form from an initial basal layer of dense material even if the layer is enriched in HPEs, depending on the density of the layer and degree of HPE enrichment, with denser basal layers requiring increased HPE enrichment to form pile-like morphology instead of a stable layer. Thermochemical piles or LLSVPs may therefore constitute an enriched reservoir in the deep mantle.

SUMMARYThe mantle transition zone is the region between the globally observed major seismic velocity discontinuities around depths of 410 and 660 km and is important for determining the style of convection and mixing between the upper and the lower mantle. In this study, P-to-S converted waves, or receiver functions, are used to study these discontinuities beneath the Alaskan subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate subducts underneath the North American Plate. Previous tomographic models do not agree on the depth extent of the subducting slab, therefore improved imaging of the Earth structure underneath Alaska is required. We use 27 800 high quality radial receiver functions to make common conversion point stacks. Upper mantle velocity anomalies are accounted for by two recently published regional tomographic S-wave velocity models. Using these two tomographic models, we show that the discontinuity depths within our CCP stacks are highly dependent on the choice of velocity model, between which velocity anomaly magnitudes vary greatly. We design a quantitative test to show whether the anomalies in the velocity models are too strong or too weak, leading to over- or undercorrected discontinuity depths. We also show how this test can be used to rescale the 3-D velocity corrections in order to improve the discontinuity topography maps.After applying the appropriate corrections, we find a localized thicker mantle transition zone and an uplifted 410 discontinuity, which show that the slab has clearly penetrated into the mantle transition zone. Little topography is seen on the 660 discontinuity, indicating that the slab has probably not reached the lower mantle. In the southwest, P410s arrivals have very small amplitudes or no significant arrival at all. This could be caused by water or basalt in the subducting slab, reducing the strength at the 410, or by topography on the 410 discontinuity, preventing coherent stacking. In the southeast of Alaska, a thinner mantle transition zone is observed. This area corresponds to the location of a slab window, and thinning of the mantle transition zone may be caused by hot mantle upwellings.

The mantle transition zone is delineated by seismic discontinuities around 410 and 660 km, which are generally related to mineral phase transitions. Study of the topography of the discontinuities further constrains which phase transitions play a role and, combined with their Clapeyron slopes, what temperature variations occur. Here we use P to S converted seismic waves or receiver functions to study the topography of the mantle seismic discontinuities beneath Europe and the effect of subducting and ponding slabs beneath southern Europe on these features. We combine roughly 28,000 of the highest quality receiver functions into a common conversion point stack. In the topography of the discontinuity around 660 km, we find broadscale depressions of 30 km beneath central Europe and around the Mediterranean. These depressions do not correlate with any topography on the discontinuity around 410 km. Explaining these strong depressions by purely thermal effects on the dissociation of ringwoodite to bridgmanite and periclase requires unrealistically large temperature reductions. Presence of several wt % water in ringwoodite leads to a deeper phase transition, but complementary observations, such as elevated Vp/Vs ratio, attenuation, and electrical conductivity, are not observed beneath central Europe. Our preferred hypothesis is the dissociation of ringwoodite into akimotoite and periclase in cold downwelling slabs at the bottom of the transition zone. The strongly negative Clapeyron slope predicted for the subsequent transition of akimotoite to bridgmanite explains the depression with a temperature reduction of 200–300 K and provides a mechanism to pond slabs in the first place. Iceland sits astride a mid‐ocean ridge underlain by a mantle hot spot. The interplay of these two geological processes has the potential to generate a complex and laterally variable crustal structure. The thickness of the Icelandic crust is a long running and controversial debate, with estimates ranging from a thin 20‐km crust to a thick 40‐km crust. We present new images of the first‐order seismic discontinuity structure of the Icelandic crust based on a joint inversion of receiver function and ambient noise‐derived surface wave dispersion data. Inversion results are validated through comparison to receiver functions multiphase common conversion point stacks across the densely instrumented Northern Volcanic Zone. We find a multilayered crustal structure consisting of a 6‐ to 10‐km‐thick upper crust underlain by either one or two discontinuities. The shallower discontinuity is found at depths of ≈20 km throughout Iceland. The deeper discontinuity is only present in some regions, defining the base of a lens‐like lower layer with maximum depths of 44 km above the center of the mantle plume. Either of these two discontinuities could be interpreted as the seismic Moho, providing an explanation why previous estimates of crustal thickness have diverged. Such structure may form via underplating of a preexisting oceanic crust as has been hypothesized in other ocean island plume settings. However, we demonstrate with a simple petrological model that variability in seismic discontinuity structure can also be understood as a consequence of compositional variation in melts generated with distance from the plume center.\ud \ud Plain Language Summary\ud \ud When tectonic plates pull apart, magma wells up between them forming new oceanic crust. Iceland sits astride one of these mid‐ocean ridges, but unlike most others which are found on the ocean floor, it is raised above sea level. This is caused by a hot area of the Earth's mantle raising the area up, thought to be caused by a mantle plume (a convective upwelling rising from the Earth's core). In this study we try and understand what crust formed in this special setting, where mid‐ocean ridge and mantle plume interact, looks like. We make observations of the Icelandic crust using distant earthquakes that are recorded in Iceland, extracting information that earthquake signals carry about the material they travel through on their journey through the Icelandic crust. This gives us a new picture of Iceland's crust: it is much thicker than normal mid‐ocean ridge crust, thickest in the center above the plume and thinning outward, and is made up of several layers. By analyzing crystal content of lavas erupted in Iceland at different distances from the plume, we construct a model that explains the structure we observe by variation in the types of magma available for crustal formation in different locations.

Until recently, most of the lower mantle was generally considered to be well-mixed with strong heterogeneity restricted to the lowermost several hundred kilometres above the core–mantle boundary, known as the $\textbf{D}$″ layer. However several recent studies have started to hint at a potential change in Earth's structure at mid-mantle depths beneath the transition zone. Here we present a continental-wide search of Europe and the North Atlantic for mid-mantle P-to-s wave converted phases. Our data set consists of close to 50,000 high quality receiver functions. These are combined in slowness and depth stacks to identify seismic discontinuities in the range of 800–1400 km depth to determine at which depths and in which tectonic settings these features exist. Receiver functions are computed in different frequency bands to resolve the sharpness of the observed discontinuities. We find most seismic velocity jumps are observed between 975–1050 km depth, localised beneath western Europe and Iceland. The shear wave velocity jumps are roughly 1–2.5% velocity increase with depth occurring over less than 8 km in width. The most robust observations are coincident with areas of active upwelling (under Iceland) and an elongate lateral low velocity anomaly imaged in recent tomographic models which has been interpreted as diverted plume material at depth. The lack of any suggested phase change in a normal pyrolitic mantle composition at around 1000 km depth indicates the presence of regional chemical heterogeneity within the mid-mantle, potentially caused by diverted plume material. We hypothesise that our observations represent either a phase change within chemically distinct plume material itself, or are caused by small scale chemical heterogeneities entrained within the upwelling plume, either in the form of recycled basaltic material or deep sourced chemically distinct material from LLSVPs. Our observations, which cannot be directly linked to an area of either active or ancient subduction, along with observations in other hotspot regions, suggest that such mid-mantle seismic features are not unique to subduction zones despite the large number of observations that have previously been made in such settings.

Turbulent convection of the liquid iron alloy outer core generates Earth's magnetic field and supplies heat to the mantle. The exact composition of the iron alloy is fundamentally linked to the processes powering the convection, and can to be constrained by its seismic properties. Discrepancies between seismic models determined using body waves and normal modes show that these properties are not yet fully agreed upon. Additionally, technical challenges in experimentally measuring the equation-of-state (EoS) parameters of liquid iron alloys at high pressures and temperatures further complicate compositional inferences. We directly infer EoS parameters describing the Earth's outer core from normal mode center frequency observations, and present the resulting Elastic Parameters of the Outer Core (EPOC) seismic model. Unlike alternative seismic models, ours requires only three parameters and guarantees physically realistic behavior with increasing pressure for a well-mixed homogeneous material along an isentrope, consistent with the outer core's condition. We show that EPOC predicts available normal mode frequencies better than the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) while also being more consistent with body-wave derived models, eliminating a longstanding discrepancy. The velocity at the top of the outer core is lower, and increases with depth more steeply, in EPOC than in PREM, while the density in EPOC is higher than in PREM across the outer core. The steeper profiles and higher density imply the outer core comprises a lighter but more compressible alloy than that inferred for PREM. Furthermore, EPOC's steeper velocity gradient explains differential SmKS body wave travel times better than previous 1D global models, without requiring an anomalously slow $\sim$90-450 km thick layer at the top of the outer core.

Large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs), whose origin and dynamic implication remain enigmatic, dominate the lowermost mantle. For decades, seismologists have created increasingly detailed pictures of the LLSVPs through tomographic models constructed with different modeling methodologies, data sets, parametrizations and regularizations. Here, we extend the cluster analysis methodology of Lekic $\textit{et al.}$, to classify seismic mantle structure in five recent global shear wave speed ($\textit{V}_S$) tomographic models into three groups. By restricting the analysis to moving depth windows of the radial profiles of $\textit{V}_S$, we assess the vertical extent of features. We also show that three clusters are better than two (or four) when representing the entire lower mantle, as the boundaries of the three clusters more closely follow regions of high lateral $\textit{V}_S$ gradients. Qualitatively, we relate the anomalously slow cluster to the LLSVPs, the anomalously fast cluster to slab material entering the lower mantle and the neutral cluster to ‘background’ lower mantle material. We obtain compatible results by repeating the analysis on recent global $\textit{P}$-wave speed ($\textit{V}_P$) models, although we find less agreement across $\textit{V}_P$ models. We systematically show that the clustering results, even in detail, agree remarkably well with a wide range of local waveform studies. This suggests that the two LLSVPs consist of multiple internal anomalies with a wide variety of morphologies, including shallowly to steeply sloping, and even overhanging, boundaries. Additionally, there are indications of previously unrecognized meso-scale features, which, like the Perm anomaly, are separated from the two main LLSVPs beneath the Pacific and Africa. The observed wide variety of structure size and morphology offers a challenge to recreate in geodynamic models; potentially, the variety can result from various degrees of mixing of several compositionally distinct components. Finally, we obtain new, much larger estimates of the volume/mass occupied by LLSVPs— 8.0 per cent ±0.9 ($\mu$ ± 1$\sigma$) of whole mantle volume and 9.1 per cent ±1.0 ($\mu$ ± 1$\sigma$) of whole mantle mass—and discuss implications for associating the LLSVPs with the hidden reservoir enriched in heat producing elements.

The Hawaiian Island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is a well-studied example of hotspot volcanism caused by an underlying upwelling mantle plume. The thermal and compositional nature of the plume alters the mantle phase transitions, which can be seen in the depth and amplitude of seismic discontinuities. This study utilises $>$ 5000 high quality receiver functions from Hawaiian island stations to detect P-to-s converted phases to image seismic discontinuities between 200 to 800 km depth. Common-conversion point stacks of the data are used to map out lateral variations in converted phase observations, while slowness stacks allow differentiation between true conversions from discontinuities and multiples. We find that the 410 discontinuity is depressed by 20 km throughout our study region, while the main 660 is around average depth throughout most of the area. To the southwest of the Big Island we observe splitting of the 660, with a major peak at 630 km, and a minor peak appearing at 675 km depth. This is inferred to represent the position of the hot plume at depth, with the upper discontinuity caused by an olivine phase transition and the lower by a garnet phase transition. In the upper mantle, a discontinuity is found across the region at depths varying between 290 to 350 km. Identifying multiples from this depth confirms the presence of a so-called X-discontinuity. To the east of the Big Island the X-discontinuity lies around 336 km and the associated multiple is particularly coherent and strong in amplitude. Strikingly, the discontinuity around 410 km disappears in this area. Synthetic modelling reveals that such observations can be explained by a silica phase transition from coesite to stishovite, consistent with widespread ponding of silica-saturated material at these depths around the plume. This material could represent eclogite enriched material, which is relatively silica-rich compared to pyrolite, spreading out from the plume to the east as a deep eclogite pool, a hypothesis which is consistent with dynamical models of thermochemical plumes. Therefore these results support the presence of a significant garnet and eclogite component within the Hawaiian mantle plume.

Constraints on chemical heterogeneities in the upper mantle may be derived from studying the seismically observable impedance contrasts that they produce. Away from subduction zones, several causal mechanisms are possible to explain the intermittently observed X-discontinuity (X) at 230--350\,km depth: the coesite-stishovite phase transition, the enstatite to clinoenstatite phase transition and/or carbonated silicate melting, all requiring a local enrichment of basalt. Africa hosts a broad range of terranes, from Precambrian cores to Cenozoic hotspots with or without lowermost mantle origins. With the absence of subduction below the margins of the African plate for $>$0.5\,Ga, Africa presents an ideal study locale to explore the origins of the X. Traditional receiver function (RF) approaches used to map seismic discontinuities, like common conversion-point stacking, ignore slowness information crucial for discriminating converted upper mantle phases from surface multiples. By manually assessing depth and slowness stacks for 1$^\circ$ radius overlapping bins, normalized vote mapping of RF stacks is used to robustly assess the spatial distribution of converted upper mantle phases. The X is mapped beneath Africa at 233--340\,km depth, revealing patches of heterogeneity proximal to mantle upwellings in Afar, Canaries, Cape Verde, East Africa, Hoggar, and Réunion with further observations beneath Cameroon, Madagascar, and Morocco. There is a lack of an X beneath southern Africa, and strikingly, the magmatic eastern rift branch of the southern East African Rift. With no relationships existing between depth and amplitudes of observed X and estimated mantle temperatures, multiple causal mechanisms are required across a range of continental geodynamic settings.

Perhaps the least ambiguous signal that the mantle is convecting comes from observations of seismic anisotropy – the variation of wave speed with direction – which must arise due to the ordering of material as deformation occurs. Therefore, significant effort has been made over many years to infer the direction and nature of mantle flow from these data. Observations have focused on the boundary layers of the mantle, where deformation is expected to be strongest and where anisotropy is usually present. While prospects for mapping flow seem good, the lack of knowledge of several key issues currently holds back progress. These include the cause of anisotropy in the lowermost mantle, the causative material's response to shear, and the single-crystal or -phase seismic properties of the causative materials. In this chapter we review recent observations of lowermost mantle anisotropy, constraints on mineral elasticity and deformation mechanisms, and challenges in linking geodynamic modeling with seismic observations.

Africa’s Cenozoic tectonism is often attributed to mantle plumes, particularly below East Africa, but their morphology, number, location, and impact on the African lithosphere are debated. The broad slow wavespeed African Superplume, ubiquitous in large-scale tomographic models, originates below South Africa, reaching the surface somewhere below East Africa. However, whether the diverse East African mantle geochemistry is best reconciled with one heterogeneous upwelling, or current tomographic models lack the resolution to image multiple distinct plumes, remains enigmatic. S-wavespeed tomographic images of Africa are legion, but higher-frequency P-wavespeed whole-mantle models possessing complementary diagnostic capabilities are comparatively lacking. This hinders attempts to disentangle the effects of Cenozoic hotspot tectonism and Pan African (and older) tectonic events on the East African lithosphere. Here we develop a continental-scale P-wave tomographic model capable of resolving structure from upper-to-lower mantle depths using a recently-developed technique to extract absolute arrival-times from noisy, temporary African seismograph deployments. Shallow-mantle wavespeeds are δVP ≈–4% below Ethiopia, but less anomalous (δVP ≥–2%) below other volcanic provinces. The heterogeneous African Superplume reaches the upper mantle below the Kenyan plateau. Below Ethiopia/Afar we image a second sub-vertical slow wavespeed anomaly rooted near the core-mantle boundary outside the African LLVP, meaning multiple disparately sourced whole-mantle plumes may influence East African magmatism. In contrast to other African cratons, wavespeeds below Tanzania are only fast to 90–135km depth. When interpreted alongside Lower Eocene on-craton kimberlites, our results support pervasive metasomatic lithospheric modification caused by subduction during the Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny.

The Hawaiian Island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is a well-studied example of hotspot volcanism caused by an underlying upwelling mantle plume. The thermal and compositional nature of the plume alters the mantle phase transitions, which can be seen in the depth and amplitude of seismic discontinuities. This study utilises >5000 high quality receiver functions from Hawaiian island stations to detect P-to-s converted phases to image seismic discontinuities between 200 to 800 km depth. Common-conversion point stacks of the data are used to map out lateral variations in converted phase observations, while slowness stacks allow differentiation between true conversions from discontinuities and multiples. We find that the 410 discontinuity is depressed by 20 km throughout our study region, while the main 660 is around average depth throughout most of the area. To the southwest of the Big Island we observe splitting of the 660, with a major peak at 630 km, and a minor peak appearing at 675 km depth. This is inferred to represent the position of the hot plume at depth, with the upper discontinuity caused by an olivine phase transition and the lower by a garnet phase transition. In the upper mantle, a discontinuity is found across the region at depths varying between 290 to 350 km. Identifying multiples from this depth confirms the presence of a so-called X-discontinuity. To the east of the Big Island the X-discontinuity lies around 336 km and the associated multiple is particularly coherent and strong in amplitude. Strikingly, the discontinuity around 410 km disappears in this area. Synthetic modelling reveals that such observations can be explained by a silica phase transition from coesite to stishovite, consistent with widespread ponding of silica-saturated material at these depths around the plume. This material could represent eclogite enriched material, which is relatively silica-rich compared to pyrolite, spreading out from the plume to the east as a deep eclogite pool, a hypothesis which is consistent with dynamical models of thermochemical plumes. Therefore these results support the presence of a significant garnet and eclogite component within the Hawaiian mantle plume.

These Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs) play a crucial role in the dynamics of the lower mantle and act as the source region for deep‐seated mantle plumes. However, their origin, and the characteristics of the surrounding deep mantle, remain enigmatic. Mantle plumes located above the margins of the LLSVPs display evidence for the presence of this deep‐seated, thermally and/or chemically heterogeneous mantle material ascending into the melting region. As a result, analysis of the spatial geochemical heterogeneity in ocean island basalts provides constraints on the structure of the Earth's lower mantle and the origin of the LLSVPs. In this study, we focus on the Galápagos Archipelago in the eastern Pacific, where bilateral asymmetry in the radiogenic isotopic composition of erupted basalts has been linked to the presence of LLSVP material in the underlying plume. We show, using spatial variations in the major element contents of high‐MgO basalts, that the isotopically enriched south‐western region of the Galápagos mantle—assigned to melting of LLSVP material—displays no evidence for lithological heterogeneity in the mantle source. As such, it is unlikely that the Pacific LLSVP represents a pile of subducted oceanic crust. Clear evidence for a lithologically heterogeneous mantle source is, however, found in the north‐central Galápagos, indicating that a recycled crustal component is present near the eastern margin of the Pacific LLSVP, consistent with seismic observations.
