In the ferromagnetic (FM) Weyl semimetal CeAlSi both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. Our quantum oscillation (QO) data indicate that the FM ordering modifies the Fermi surface topology and also leads to an unusual drop in the QO amplitude. In the FM phase, we find a pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous and the loop Hall effects. This cannot be explained based on the electronic band structure or magnetic structure, both of which are nearly pressure independent. Instead, we show that a simplified model describing the scattering of Weyl fermions off FM domain walls can potentially explain the observed topological features. Black Phosphorus (BP) is unique among layered materials owing to its homonuclear lattice and strong structural anisotropy. While recent investigations on few layers BP have extensively explored the in-plane (a,c) anisotropy, much less attention has been given to the out-of-plane direction (b). Here, the optical response from bulk BP is probed using polarization-resolved photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and resonant Raman scattering along the zigzag, out-of-plane, and armchair directions. PL reveals an unexpected b-polarized emission occurring in the visible at 1.75 eV, far above the fundamental gap (0.3 eV). PLE indicates that this emission is generated through b-polarized excitation at 2.3 eV. The same electronic resonance is observed in resonant Raman scans, where the scattering efficiency of both Ag phonon modes is enhanced. These experimental results are fully consistent with DFT calculations of the permittivity tensor elements and demonstrate the remarkable extent to which the anisotropy influences the optical properties and carrier dynamics in black phosphorus.

In the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. We use external pressure as an effective tuning parameter and relate three observations to the presence of a nontrivial topology in its ferromagnetic regime: an exceptional temperature response of the quantum oscillations amplitude, the presence of an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and the existence of an unusual loop Hall effect (LHE). We find a suppression of the AHE and the LHE with increasing pressure, while the Curie temperature is enhanced. The magnetic structure and the electronic bands exhibit only a negligible pressure effect suggesting the importance of the domain wall landscape for the topological behavior in CeAlSi.

Identification of the electronic state that appears upon doping a Mott insulator is important to understand the physics of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy of cuprates provides evidence that a charge-ordered state emerges before the superconducting state upon doping the parent compound. We study this phenomenon by computing the charge response function of the Hubbard model including frequency-dependent local vertex corrections that satisfy the compressibility sum-rule. We find that upon approaching the Mott phase from the overdoped side, the charge fluctuations at wave vectors connecting hot spots are suppressed much faster than at the other wave-vectors. It leads to a momentum dependence of the dressed charge susceptibility that is very different from either the bare susceptibility or from the susceptibility obtained from the random phase approximation. We also find that the paramagnetic lightly hole-doped Mott phase at finite-temperature is unstable to charge ordering only at zero wave-vector, confirming the results previously obtained from the compressibility. We report on the performance of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) light sensors operating in electric field strength up to 30 kV/cm and at a temperature of 149K, relative to their performance in the absence of an external electric field. The SiPM devices used in this study show stable gain, photon detection efficiency, and rates of correlated pulses, when exposed to external fields, within the estimated uncertainties. The search for neutrinoless double beta decay probes the fundamental properties of neutrinos, including whether or not the neutrino and antineutrino are distinct. Double beta detectors are large and expensive, so background reduction is essential for extracting the highest sensitivity. The identification, or 'tagging', of the $^{136}$Ba daughter atom from double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe provides a technique for eliminating backgrounds in the nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. The tagging scheme studied in this work utilizes a cryogenic probe to trap the barium atom in solid xenon, where the barium atom is tagged via fluorescence imaging in the solid xenon matrix. Here we demonstrate imaging and counting of individual atoms of barium in solid xenon by scanning a focused laser across a solid xenon matrix deposited on a sapphire window. When the laser sits on an individual atom, the fluorescence persists for $\sim$30~s before dropping abruptly to the background level, a clear confirmation of one-atom imaging. No barium fluorescence persists following evaporation of a barium deposit to a limit of $\leq$0.16\%. This is the first time that single atoms have been imaged in solid noble element. It establishes the basic principle of a barium tagging technique for nEXO.

Future tonne-scale liquefied noble gas detectors depend on efficient light detection in the VUV range. In the past years Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) have emerged as a valid alternative to standard photomultiplier tubes or large area avalanche photodiodes. The next generation double beta decay experiment, nEXO, with a 5 tonne liquid xenon time projection chamber, will use SiPMs for detecting the $178\,\text{nm}$ xenon scintillation light, in order to achieve an energy resolution of $\sigma / Q_{\beta\beta} = 1\, \%$. This paper presents recent measurements of the VUV-HD generation SiPMs from Fondazione Bruno Kessler in two complementary setups. It includes measurements of the photon detection efficiency with gaseous xenon scintillation light in a vacuum setup and dark measurements in a dry nitrogen gas setup. We report improved photon detection efficiency at $175\,\text{nm}$ compared to previous generation devices, that would meet the criteria of nEXO. Furthermore, we present the projected nEXO detector light collection and energy resolution that could be achieved by using these SiPMs., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

The projected performance and detector configuration of nEXO are described in this pre-Conceptual Design Report (pCDR). nEXO is a tonne-scale neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay search in $^{136}$Xe, based on the ultra-low background liquid xenon technology validated by EXO-200. With $\simeq$ 5000 kg of xenon enriched to 90% in the isotope 136, nEXO has a projected half-life sensitivity of approximately $10^{28}$ years. This represents an improvement in sensitivity of about two orders of magnitude with respect to current results. Based on the experience gained from EXO-200 and the effectiveness of xenon purification techniques, we expect the background to be dominated by external sources of radiation. The sensitivity increase is, therefore, entirely derived from the increase of active mass in a monolithic and homogeneous detector, along with some technical advances perfected in the course of a dedicated R&D program. Hence the risk which is inherent to the construction of a large, ultra-low background detector is reduced, as the intrinsic radioactive contamination requirements are generally not beyond those demonstrated with the present generation $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiments. Indeed, most of the required materials have been already assayed or reasonable estimates of their properties are at hand. The next-generation Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) is a proposed experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay in $^{136}$Xe with a target half-life sensitivity of approximately $10^{28}$ years using $5\times10^3$ kg of isotopically enriched liquid-xenon in a time projection chamber. This improvement of two orders of magnitude in sensitivity over current limits is obtained by a significant increase of the $^{136}$Xe mass, the monolithic and homogeneous configuration of the active medium, and the multi-parameter measurements of the interactions enabled by the time projection chamber. A new design for the anode of a time projection chamber, consisting of a charge-detecting "tile", is investigated for use in large scale liquid xenon detectors. The tile is produced by depositing 60 orthogonal metal charge-collecting strips, 3~mm wide, on a 10~\si{\cm} $\times$ 10~\si{\cm} fused-silica wafer. These charge tiles may be employed by large detectors, such as the proposed tonne-scale nEXO experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Modular by design, an array of tiles can cover a sizable area. The width of each strip is small compared to the size of the tile, so a Frisch grid is not required. A grid-less, tiled anode design is beneficial for an experiment such as nEXO, where a wire tensioning support structure and Frisch grid might contribute radioactive backgrounds and would have to be designed to accommodate cycling to cryogenic temperatures. The segmented anode also reduces some degeneracies in signal reconstruction that arise in large-area crossed-wire time projection chambers. A prototype tile was tested in a cell containing liquid xenon. Very good agreement is achieved between the measured ionization spectrum of a $^{207}$Bi source and simulations that include the microphysics of recombination in xenon and a detailed modeling of the electrostatic field of the detector. An energy resolution $\sigma/E$=5.5\% is observed at 570~\si{keV}, comparable to the best intrinsic ionization-only resolution reported in literature for liquid xenon at 936~V/\si{cm}., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, as published

We report on a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the iron pnictide LaFe$_2$P$_2$. Our extensive density-functional band-structure calculations can well explain the measured angular-dependent dHvA frequencies. As salient feature, we observe only one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface sheet, i.e., a hole-like Fermi-surface cylinder around $\Gamma$, essential for $s_\pm$ pairing, is missing. In spite of considerable mass enhancements due to many-body effects, LaFe$_2$P$_2$ shows no superconductivity. With the ever-increasing sophistication of codes, the verification of the implementation of advanced theoretical formalisms becomes critical. In particular, cross comparison between different codes provides a strong hint in favor of the correctness of the implementations, and a measure of the (hopefully small) possible numerical differences. We lead a rigorous and careful study of the quantities that enter in the calculation of the zero-point motion renormalization of the direct band gap of diamond due to electron-phonon coupling, starting from the total energy, and going through the computation of phonon frequencies and electron-phonon matrix elements. We rely on two independent implementations : Quantum Espresso + Yambo and ABINIT. We provide the order of magnitude of the numerical discrepancies between the codes, that are present for the different quantities: less than $10^{-5}$ Hartree per atom on the total energy (-5.722 Ha/at), less than 0.07 cm$^{-1}$ on the $\Gamma,L,X$ phonon frequencies (555 to 1330 cm$^{-1}$), less than 0.5% on the square of the electron-phonon matrix elements and less than 4 meV on the zero-point motion renormalization of each eigenenergies (44 to 264 meV). Within our approximations, the DFT converged direct band gap renormalization in diamond due to the electron-phonon coupling is -0.409 eV (reduction of the band gap)., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The amplitude and phase modulation observed in a significant fraction of the RR Lyrae variables - the Blazhko effect - represents a long-standing enigma in stellar pulsation theory. No satisfactory explanation for the Blazhko effect has been proposed so far. In this paper we focus on the Stothers (2006) idea, in which modulation is caused by changes in the structure of the outer convective zone, caused by a quasi-periodically changing magnetic field. However, up to this date no quantitative estimates were made to investigate whether such a mechanism can be operational and whether it is capable of reproducing the light variation we observe in Blazhko variables. We address the latter problem. We use a simplified model, in which the variation of turbulent convection is introduced into the non-linear hydrodynamic models in an ad hoc way, neglecting interaction with the magnetic field. We study the light curve variation through the modulation cycle and properties of the resulting frequency spectra. Our results are compared with Kepler observations of RR Lyr. We find that reproducing the light curve variation, as is observed in RR Lyr, requires a huge modulation of the mixing length, of the order of +/-50 per cent, on a relatively short time-scale of less than 40 days. We present Kepler satellite photometry of KIC 10661783, a short-period binary star system which shows total eclipses and multi-periodic delta Scuti pulsations. A frequency analysis of the eclipse-subtracted light curve reveals at least 68 frequencies of which 55 or more can be attributed to pulsation modes. The main limitation on this analysis is the frequency resolution within the 27-day short-cadence light curve. Most of the variability signal lies in the frequency range 18 to 31 c/d, with amplitudes between 0.1 and 4 mmag. One harmonic term (2.f) and a few combination frequencies (f_i+f_j) have been detected. From a plot of the residuals versus orbital phase we assign the pulsations to the primary star in the system. The pulsations were removed from the short-cadence data and the light curve was modelled using the Wilson-Devinney code. We are unable to get a perfect fit due to the residual effects of pulsations and also to the treatment of reflection and reprocessing in the light curve model. A model where the secondary star fills its Roche lobe is favoured, which means that KIC 10661783 can be classified as an oEA system. Further photometric and spectroscopic observations will allow the masses and radii of the two stars to be measured to high precision and hundreds of delta Scuti pulsation frequencies to be resolved. This could lead to unique constraints on theoretical models of delta Scuti stars, if the evolutionary history of KIC 10661783 can be accounted for., Comment: 11 pages, 6 tables, 6 figures. Optical properties of GaAsN system with nitrogen concentrations in the range of 0.9-3.7% are studied by full-potential LAPW method in a supercell approach. The E+ transition is identified by calculating the imaginary part of the dielectric function. The evolution of the energy of this transition with nitrogen concentration is studied and the origin of this transition is identified by analyzing the contributions to the dielectric function from different band combinations. The L_1c-derived states are shown to play an important role in the formation of the E+ transition, which was also suggested by recent experiments. At the same time the nitrogen-induced modification of the first conduction band of the host compound are also found to contribute significantly to the E+ transition. Further, the study of several model supercells demonstrated the significant influence of the nitrogen potential on the optical properties of the GaAsN system., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Structural relaxations in electronically excited poly(para-phenylene) are studied using many-body perturbation theory and density-functional-theory methods. A sophisticated description of the electron-hole interaction is required to describe the energies of the excitonic states, but we show that the structural relaxations associated with exciton formation can be obtained quite accurately within a constrained density-functional-theory approach. We find that the structural relaxations in the low-energy excitonic states extend over about 8 monomers, leading to an energy reduction of 0.22 eV and a Stokes shift of 0.40 eV., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
