Monuments are perplexing from a Darwinian perspective because building them diverts energy from survival and reproduction. In the late 1980s, Dunnell proposed a solution to this conundrum. He suggested that wasting energy confers an adaptive advantage in highly variable environments. This hypothesis has been used to explain several instances of monument building but it has only been evaluated once and that study suggested it is flawed. Here, we report a series of experiments in which we used an agent-based model to assess the hypothesis while taking into account two factors that could enhance the adaptiveness of waste—restricted agent movement and spatial structure in resource availability. Waste was strongly selected against in most of the experiments. Two experiments suggested that very restricted mobility can select for waste, but this effect disappeared when environmental variation increased from moderate to high. Thus, our experiments also suggest that the waste hypothesis is flawed.

Ancient monuments represent a puzzle from the perspective of evolutionary theory. It is obvious that their construction would have been costly in terms of energy, but it is not clear how they would have enhanced reproductive success. In the late 1980s, the prominent US archaeologist Robert Dunnell proposed a solution to this conundrum. He argued that wasting energy on monuments and other forms of what he dubbed “cultural elaboration” would have conferred a selective advantage in highly variable environments. In the present paper, we report a study in which we used an agent-based model to test the core prediction of Dunnell’s hypothesis. In the model, the agents inherited a propensity to waste and were subjected to selection in low and high variability environments. The results we obtained do not support the hypothesis. We found that the propensity to waste was subject to strong negative selection regardless of the level of environmental variability. At the start of the simulation runs, agents wasted 50% of the time on average, but selection drove that rate down by more than a third after the first generation, ultimately settling at 5-7% on average. We contend that this casts serious doubt on the ability of Dunnell’s hypothesis to explain instances of cultural elaboration in the archaeological record.

Evoliucijos teorija yra taikoma tiek biologijoje, tiek sociokultūrinams reiškiniams analizuoti ir paaiškinti. XX a. staigūs ir svarbūs sociopolitiniai pokyčiai sudaro palankią terpę evoliuciniam modeliui pritaikyti ir pabandyti suprasti Lietuvos archeologijos mokslo raidą, kaitos priežastis ir šiandienos tendencijas. Todėl, žvelgiant iš evoliucinės perspektyvos ir panaudojant elementus iš mokslo kaitos teorijų mes sukūrėme modelį, kurį pritaikėme Lietuvos archeologijos raidai XX a. išanalizuoti. 1940-ais metais, sovietams okupavus Lietuvos valstybę, susiformavo visiškai nauja politinė ir socialinė aplinka. Idėjos, praktikos ir net individai buvo intensyviai šalinami iš Lietuvos archeologijos mokslo. Lietuvos archeologai, tęsę archeologinę praktiką sovietmečiu, buvo natūraliai prisitaikę prie sovietinės sistemos. Vienas pagrindinių adaptyvių bruožų sovietmečiu tapo aprašomasis metodas. Archeologinių radinių ir periodų aprašymas buvo saugiausia archeologinė praktika, kadangi tokio pobūdžio veikla neįpareigojo archeologų įsitraukti į ideologijos diskusijas, netrikdė tuometinės politinės sistemos. Sovietmečio pabaiga buvo kitas žymus aplinkos pokytis Lietuvos archeologijos istorijoje. Priešingai nei sovietinias metais, kuomet natūralios atrankos jėgos kryptingai stūmė Lietuvos archeologus į aprašomąją praktiką, po nepriklausomybės paskelbimo 1990-aisiais metais, sociopolitinė aplinka tapo žymiai laisvesnė.Tačiau nepaisant ryškaus politinio pokyčio, senoji paradigma posovietinėje Lietuvos archeologijoje keičiasi gana lėtai. Aprašomoji archeologijos tradicija išlieka pastebimai stabili. Naujos, kaip ir senos idėjos, laisvesnėje politinėje aplinkoje nebepatiria agresyvios atrankos (relaxed selective pressure). Šios aplinkybės sukuria situaciją, kurioje sunku naujoms idėjoms pakeisti senąsias, turinčias ilgą istoriją ir gerai prisitaikiusias. Dabar Lietuvos archeologijoje vyksta idėjų dreifas, kuris natūraliai lėtina paradigmų kaitą. Senąją paradigmą yra įprasta ir patogu naudoti, ypač vyresniajai archeologų kartai. Evoliuciniais terminais tariant, ji pasiekė savo vietinį optimumą (local optimum), - zoną, kurios sunku atsisakyti. Norint sukurti naująją paradigmą būtina pristatyti kuo didesnę idėjų įvairovę natūraliai atrankai. Yra keli pagrindiniai idėjų įvairovės skatinimo keliai ir šaltiniai. Visų pirma, tai jaunoji karta archeologijoje, - studentai ir jauni archeologai, kurie žvelgdami į senas problemas turi originalų požiūrį ir tokiu būdu gali generuoti naujas idėjas ir naujus sprendimus senoms problemoms spręsti. Kitas svarbus idėjų įvairovės šaltinis yra išorinė informacija - kontaktai su užsienio specialistais, tarptautiniai projektai, tarptautinės publikacijos bei konferencijos, užsienio literatūra, stažuotės ir kita. Lietuvos archeologijos mokslas yra svarbioje kryžkelėje. Staiga atsidūrusi laisvesnėje aplinkoje, Lietuvos archeologija gali plėtoti įvairias ir vertingas tyrinėjimų kryptis, kurios gali tapti svarbiu indėliu visai disciplinai. Tačiau paradigmų kaita yra lėta, nes archeologijos diciplina Lietuvoje į posovietinį laikotarpį įžengė su labai kruopščiai ir kryptingai atrinktomis idėjomis bei praktikomis. Idėjų įvairovei atsirasti reikia laiko. Įvertinus praeities sunkumus ir pasiekimus, Lietuvos archeologai dabar turi galimybę paskatinti naujos archeologinės teorijos atsiradimą ir sąmoningai formuoti Lietuvos archeologijos tradiciją norima linkme. During the Soviet period, Lithuanian archaeologists developed a highly descriptive tradition in Lithuanian archaeology. In post-Soviet Lithuania, archaeologists continue to practice the descriptive tradition and rarely engage in theoretical debates. In order to understand the evolution of the descriptive tradition in Lithuanian archaeology, we provide an evolutionary analysis of current trends in Lithuanian archaeology. The overall goal of the article is to generate discussion between archaeologists about Lithuanian archaeology's past, present and future.

This paper presents an alternative to the purely sequential and arbitrary resolution of events in agent-based simulation for Anthropology. It is argued that an alternative system in which agents constantly evaluate their priorities in the light of the actions of other agents provides for more realistic social interaction and allows for the emergence of social-like processes in a computer agent population. A number of other problems, such as the production of survivorship curves from a threat environment, are also discussed.

Objectives: We assessed trends in stillbirth over time for Francophones and Anglophones of Quebec, a large Canadian province with publically funded health care and an English-speaking minority. Conclusions: Stillbirth rates declined in both Francophones and Anglophones before the turn of the century, but increased thereafter for Anglophones, suggesting that linguistic inequalities in stillbirth may be emerging in Quebec. Linguistic status may be a useful marker for surveillance of inequalities in stillbirth. Methods: We calculated stillbirth rates for Francophones and Anglophones, and estimated hazard ratios (HR) by decade from 1981 to 2010, adjusting for maternal characteristics. We analyzed temporal trends by gestational interval and cause of fetal death. Results: Stillbirth rates decreased in Quebec during the three decades, due to improved rates in Francophones. Rates decreased for Anglophones in 1991-2000, but increased in 2001-2010 at term, during the second trimester, and for most causes of fetal death. In the 2000s, the hazard of stillbirth for Anglophones was nearly the same as the hazard for Francophones in the 1980s (HR 0.93, 95 % confidence interval 0.82, 1.05). Refereed/Peer-reviewed
