Abstract

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s=1/2-Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu2O3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-Terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these few percent of ''extra'' spin states are coupled strongly to the bulk spins and are involved in the antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 25 K. By mapping the frequency/resonance field diagram we have determined a small gap for magnetic excitations below T_N of the order of 0.3 - 0.8 meV. Such a small value of the gap explains the occurrence of the spin-flop transition in CaCu2O 3 at weak magnetic fields H_{sf} ~ 3 T. Qualitative changes of the ESR response with increasing the field strength give indications that strong magnetic fields reduce the antiferromagnetic correlations and may even suppress the long-range magnetic order in CaCu2O3. Abstract

We present a high-field magnetization study of the $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$. For this material, as result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a staggered $g$ tensor, the ground state is characterized by an anisotropic field-induced spin excitation gap and a staggered magnetization. Our data reveal the qualitatively different behavior in the directions of maximum and zero spin excitation gap. The data are analyzed via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with up to 20 sites and on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations, respectively. For both directions we find very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. We extract the magnetic coupling strength $J/k_B$ along the chain direction to 36.3(5) K and determine the field dependence of the staggered magnetization component $m_s$., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures (minor changes to manuscript and figures)

Abstract

Within the European project AFLoNext, one of the technological streams is dedicated to the investigation of active flow control (AFC) to increase the robustness of the wing tip design at takeoff conditions, whilst allowing the optimization of aerodynamic efficiency in cruise. AFC is used to delay the wing tip stall, which is caused by vortex breakdown, thus improving the lift to drag ratio and allowing a steeper climb gradient during second segment climb when the landing gear is retracted. The numerical parametric studies of AFC aerodynamic sizing were shared between the involved partners on the basis of actuator location (in the leading edge region or on the upper surface) and actuator types (steady blowing, synthetic jets, pulsed jets). Most of the numerical results have been obtained for steady blowing through continuous or segmented slots. The specific effect of the unsteady means of actuation on the flow topology was also identified. The aim of this study was to take into account industrial requirements defined by Airbus and geometric constraints of AFC actuators arising from the project partners involved in the development of AFC hardware. Some comparisons between the partners’ results are presented, allowing preliminary conclusions to be drawn. The most effective and efficient device turned out to be pulsed blowing through segmented slots located at the leading edge separation line.

Abstract

The reaction between atomic carbon and acetylene has been investigated using complementary crossed molecular beam techniques. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the reactions of both ground and excited carbon atoms, C(³P[sub J], ¹D[sub 2])+ C[sub 2]H[sub 2](X ¹Σ[sup +, sub g], in experiments conducted with continuous supersonic beams, mass spectrometric detection, and time-of-flight analysis at a relative translational energy of 29.3 kJmol[sup -1]. The reaction C(³P[sub J]) + C[sub 2]H[sub 2](X ¹Σ[sup +, sub g]) has been found to lead to C[sub 3]H+H and C[sub 3]+H[sub 2] products in comparable amounts. Both H and H[sub 2] elimination pathways are found to proceed through the formation of a C[sub 3]H[sub 2] long-lived intermediate complex whose lifetime may be comparable to its rotational period. The spin-forbidden H[sub 2] elimination channel is attributed to the occurrence of intersystem-crossing between the triplet and singlet manifolds of the C[sub 3]H[sub 2] potential-energy surfaces. The reaction C(¹D[sub 2])+C[sub 2]H[sub 2](X ¹Σ[sup +, sub g]) has been found to lead to formation of C[sub 3]H+H, with a C[sub 3]H center-of-mass angular distribution strongly forward peaked, indicating a short-lived intermediate complex. Integral cross sections have been obtained for the C(³P[sub J]j) + C[sub 2]H[sub 2] (X &sup1Σ[sup +, sub g]) → C[sub 3] H + H(²S[sub ½]) reaction in experiments conducted with pulsed, supersonic molecular beams in the range of relative translational energies E[sub T]=0.38 -25.5 kJ mol[sup -1], the H(²S[sub ½) product being detected by laser-induced fluorescence. The reaction has been found to be without a barrier, relative integral cross sections being proportional to (Er)[sup -0.80&plumsn;0.03] below E[sub T]=10 kJmol[sup -1]. Abstract

The C+NO2→CO+NO reaction at 300 K has been shown to exhibit a strong ultraviolet chemiluminescence from NO (B 2Πr) and a weak one from NO(A 2Σ+). The NO (B 2Πr)v’=0 production rate was found to be approximately ten times greater than that of NO (A 2Σ+)v’=0. No chemiluminescence either from NO(C 2Πr) or NO (D 2Σ+), however energetically accessible, could be observed. These features are in close agreement with the Cs symmetry correction diagram for this reaction. The nascent vibrational distribution of NO(B 2Πr) was found to be much cooler than the prior statistical one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High coercivity and magnetic viscosity in nanocrystalline YCo5 alloy were observed. The alloy was obtained by arc-melting the raw materials, mechanical milling for 4 h with subsequent heat treatment for short times at 1103 K and a final quenching in water. The x-ray diffraction pattern showed a single hexagonal 1:5 phase. The average crystallite size determined by transmission electron microscopy was 13 nm. Magnetic measurements were carried out at 85 K in a pulsed field magnetometer varying the field in the range 50–250 kOe and keeping the pulse duration equal to 0.3 s. A maximum coercivity of 50 kOe was measured when applying a maximum magnetic field of 250 kOe. The viscosity parameter was measured varying the dH/dt rate in the range 511–1113 kOe/s. The calculated activation volumes from viscosity data were smaller than the crystallite volume from transmission electron microscopy, consistent with their different physical meanings. Abstract

We report integral cross sections for the S(1D2) + HD(j = 0) → DS + H and HS + D reaction channels obtained through crossed-beam experiments reaching collision energies as low as 0.46 meV and from adiabatic time-independent quantum-mechanical calculations. While good overall agreement with experiment at energies above 10 meV is observed, neither the product channel branching ratio nor the low-energy resonancelike features in the HS + D channel can be theoretically reproduced. Abstract

It is usually asserted that H2O is characterized by an sp3 distorted hybridization with the two lone pairs degenerate. Actually, this is the case of water in liquid or solid state. In the gas phase, when the molecule is isolated, the two O–H bonding orbitals form an angle of about 104.5 and the two lone pairs are not degenerate, being one aligned along the C2v molecular axis (3a1, the sp2 lone pair orbital) and the other one perpendicular to the molecular plane (1b1, the 2pip oxygen non bonding orbital). This is well confirmed by recent measurements from my laboratory in a Penning ionization electron spectroscopy study of water molecules by neon metastable atoms. In our experiment, due to the available energy of Ne*(3P2,0) atoms, the two not degenerate lone pair orbitals of the H2O molecule are selectively involved in the ionization process. The non-degeneracy of the two lone pairs is also well confirmed by the presence of two separated bands in the electron energy spectra of H2O, obtained by photo- or Penning ionization, assigned to the two different approach directions of the Ne* atom to the molecule (both towards the O atom: one along the C2v molecular axis and the other one along the perpendicular direction of the molecular plane).

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we report results of high-field magnetization and electron spin resonance ESR measurements performed on-Na 1.286 V 2 O 5 , a compound that shows a spin gap. This system may be regarded as an assembly of weakly interacting magnetic entities, each of which containing, at low temperature, 18 antiferromagnetically AF-coupled S = 1 2 spins. The purpose of this work is to determine the gap value and to probe the low-lying energy levels in this compound. On the one hand, the high-field magnetization measurements, performed at temperatures down to 1.7 K on powder samples, suggest a spin gap, , of approximately 39 K, a value which is quite close to the earlier estimate of 35 K, which some of us deduced from the susceptibility measurements at low field Duc et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 094102 2004. On the other hand, these measurements show a magnetization step at one ninth of the saturation magnetization, giving strong support to the assumption that this system may be regarded as a finite-size system composed of 18 AF-coupled S = 1 2 spins. A theoretical fit of the magnetization indicates the necessity to include couplings to second or more distant neighbors. The ESR data at various frequencies from 9.6–980 GHz and at temperatures ranging from 4.2–150 K, obtained on powder samples as well as on single crystals, are in accordance with the gap value mentioned above. In addition, these ESR data indicate that the closure of the gap is not accompanied by any detectable mixing between the singlet level and the lowest-lying level of the first excited triplet. This implies the absence of any appreciable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in this compound.

45. Comparative experimental and theoretical study of the rotational excitation of CO by collision with ortho- and para-D2 molecules.

Abstract

A joint crossed beam and quantum mechanical investigation of the rotationally inelastic collisions of CO with ortho- and para-D2 molecules is reported. A new 4D potential energy surface (PES) averaged over the ground vibrational states of D2 and CO is used to calculate the rovibrational bound states of the ortho-D2–CO complexes. Close coupling calculations are then performed in the rigid rotor approximation for ortho- and para-D2 colliding with CO for the experimentally investigated transition of CO (j = 0 → 1) and for collision energies ranging from 0.1 to 25 cm−1. The agreement between theory and experiment is found to be very good for both the bound state energies of the ortho-D2–CO complexes and for the inelastic scattering cross-sections showing that the free rotation of two rigid rotors is a very good model of the D2–CO system in this low collision energy domain.
