Reactor temperature manipulation to increase product yields of chemical reactions is a known technique used in many industrial processes. In the case of exothermic chemical reactions, the well-known Le Chatelier’s principle predicts that a decrease in temperature will displace the chemical reaction toward the formation of products by increasing the value of the equilibrium constant. The reverse is true for endothermic reactions. Reactor temperature manipulation in an industrial system, however, affects the values of many variables, including physical properties, transport parameters, reaction kinetic parameters, etc. In the case of reactive absorption, some variables change with increasing temperatures due to solute absorption, while others change in such a way that the solute absorption rate decreases. For example, temperature drop increases product formation for exothermic reactions but reduces the value of transport parameters, leading to decreasing interfacial concentrations and absorption rates. Therefore, temperature manipulation strategies must be designed carefully to achieve the process goals. In this work, we theoretically study the use of temperature as a tool to increase CO2 absorption by solvents in a semi-batch reactor. A computer code has been developed and validated using reported experimental data. Calculated results demonstrate an increase in absorbed CO2 of more than 28% with respect to the highest temperature used. Despite high agitation and high gas flow rate, the system is mass transfer controlled at short times, becoming kinetically controlled as time increases. An operating strategy to decrease cooling energy costs is also proposed. This study reveals that reactor temperature manipulation can be an effective process to improve CO2 absorption by solvents in two-phase semi-batch reactors.

There is increased interest in many different processes based upon interactions between a charged solid surface and a liquid electrolyte. Energy storage in capacitive porous materials, ionic membranes, capacitive deionization (CDI) for water desalination, capacitive energy generation, removal of heavy ions from wastewater streams, and geophysical applications are some examples of these processes. Process development is driven by the production of porous materials with increasing surface area. Understanding of the physical phenomena occurring at the charged solid-electrolyte interface will significantly improve the design and development of more effective applied processes. The goal of this work is to critically review the current knowledge in the field. The focus is on concepts behind different models. We start by briefly presenting the classical electrical double layer (EDL) models in flat surfaces. Then, we discuss models for porous materials containing macro-, meso-, and micro-pores. Some of the current models for systems comprising two different pore sizes are also included. Finally, we discuss the concepts behind the most common models used for ionic transport and Faradaic processes in porous media. The latter models are used for simulation of electrosorption processes in porous media.

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) can sequester atmospheric CO2, while producing electricity. The CO2 avoidance cost (CAC) is used to calculate the marginal cost of avoided CO2 emissions for BECCS as compared to other established energy technologies. A comparative analysis using four different reference-case power plants for CAC calculations is performed here to evaluate the CO2 avoidance cost of BECCS implementation. Results from this work demonstrate that BECCS can generate electricity at costs competitive with other neutral emissions technologies, while simultaneously removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Approximately 73% of current coal power plants are approaching retirement by the year 2035 in the U.S. After considering CO2 sequestered from the atmosphere and coal power plant CO2 emissions displaced by BECCS, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 1.4 billion tonnes per year in the U.S. alone at a cost of $88 to $116 per tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, for 10% to 90% of available biomass used, respectively. CAC calculations in this paper indicate that BECCS can help the U.S. and other countries transition to a decarbonized electricity grid, as simulations presented in this paper predict that BECCS power plants operate at lower CACs than coal plants with CCS.

Environmentally friendly amino-acid salt solutions are used for the absorption of carbon dioxide from concentrated flue-gas streams via chemical absorption. Process intensification reduces operating and capital costs by combining chemical reactions and separation operations. Here, we present a new process-intensification approach that combines the CO2 capture and the amino-acid regeneration steps into a single process carried out in a slurry three-phase reactor. The absorbed CO2 precipitates as a solid carbonated guanidine compound. The cycle is completed by separation of the solid precipitate to strip the CO2 and regenerate the guanidine compound, while the liquid solution is recycled to the slurry reactor. The process was studied by modifying a model developed by the authors for a gas-liquid bubble column without the presence of the guanidine compound. The guanidine precipitation reaction was accounted for using kinetic parameters calculated by the authors in another study. The proposed model was implemented by modifying an existing computer code used for the simulation of gas-liquid bubble columns. The calculated results showed that the proposed cycle can significantly reduce energy, equipment, and operating costs and can make an important contribution to developing a competitive cost-effective large-scale process for CO2 capture.

Hydrocarbons are the most important source for hydrogen production. A combined reaction-separation process using inorganic membranes can significantly increase the reaction conversion by shifting the equilibrium toward product formation. Sulfur poisoning is a significant problem as it deactivates the most commonly used metallic membranes. The relationship of the membrane activity and surface coverage with the surface structure has been recognized in the literature. A theoretical model to simulate hydrogen transport in the presence of sulfur compounds is presented. This model accounts for active site deactivation and permanent structural damage to the membrane. Transport and reaction rate parameters used in the model have been estimated from experimental data. Qualitatively, the model represents well the behavior of inorganic membranes, including partial membrane activity regeneration after the sulfur source is removed.

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is one strategy to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. To assess the potential scale and cost of CO2 sequestration from BECCS in the US, this analysis models carbon sequestration net of supply chain emissions and costs of biomass production, delivery, power generation, and CO2 capture and sequestration in saline formations. The analysis includes two biomass supply scenarios (near-term and long-term), two biomass logistics scenarios (conventional and pelletized), and two generation technologies (pulverized combustion and integrated gasification combined cycle). Results show marginal cost per tonne CO2 (accounting for costs of electricity and CO2 emissions of reference power generation scenarios) as a function of CO2 sequestered (simulating capture of up to 90% of total CO2 sequestration potential) and associated spatial distribution of resources and generation locations for the array of scenario options. Under a near-term scenario using up to 206 million tonnes per year of biomass, up to 181 million tonnes CO2 can be sequestered annually at scenario-average costs ranging from $62 to $137 per tonne CO2; under a long-term scenario using up to 740 million tonnes per year of biomass, up to 737 million tonnes CO2 can be sequestered annually at scenario-average costs ranging from $42 to $92 per tonne CO2. These estimates of CO2 sequestration potential may be reduced if future competing demand reduces resource availability or may be increased if displaced emissions from conventional power sources are included. Results suggest there are large-scale opportunities to implement BECCS at moderate cost in the US, particularly in the Midwest, Plains States, and Texas.

A novel meso- and microporous tire-derived-carbon support with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle adsorbents that selectively adsorbs Se(IV) ions from simulated contaminated water has been developed. In this work, the physicochemical characteristics of the composite adsorbent are characterized with respect to porosity and surface area, chemical composition, and microstructure morphology. The kinetics of this composite adsorbent in a fixed-bed setting has been determined. Several column runs were conducted and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) to determine the concentration gradient vs time. These results were then fit to a pseudo-second order rate law to obtain equilibrium values. Combining calculated equilibrium values with effluent concentration data, enabled the application of the Adams–Bohart model to determine reaction constants and column coefficients. Column parameters obtained from different flow rates and fittings of the Adams–Bohart model were remarkably consistent. These findings enable the application of this sorbent to fixed-bed column systems and opens up further research into mixed pollutants tests with real wastewater and scaling of selenium pollutant removal.

Valorization of waste streams is becoming increasingly important to improve resource recovery and economics of bioprocesses for the production of fuels. The pyrolysis process produces a significant portion of the biomass as an aqueous waste stream, called bio-oil aqueous phase (BOAP), which cannot be effectively converted into fuel. In this report, we detail the separation and utilization of this stream for the production of electrons, hydrogen, and chemicals, which can supplement fuel production improving economics of the biorefinery. Separation methods including physical separation via centrifugal separator, chemical separation via pH manipulation, and electrochemical separation via capacitive deionization are discussed. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) including microbial fuel cells (MFCs), microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), and electro-fermentation processes are reviewed for their potential to generate current, hydrogen, and chemicals from BOAP. Recent developments in MECs using complex waste streams and electro-active biocatalyst enrichment have resulted in advancement of the technology toward performance metrics closer to commercial requirements. Current densities above 10 A/m2 have been reported using BOAP, which suggest further work to demonstrate the technology at pilot scale should be undertaken. The research on electro-fermentation is revealing potential to generate alcohols, diols, medium chain fatty acids, esters, etc. using electrode-based electrons. The ability to derive electrons and chemical building blocks from waste streams illustrate the advancement of the BES technology and potential to push the frontiers of bioenergy generation one step further toward development of a circular bioeconomy.

The absorption of carbon dioxide is an important process in many practical applications such as reduction of greenhouse gases, separation and purification processes in the chemical and petroleum industries, and capture of radioactive isotopes in the nuclear fuel cycle The goal of this research is to develop a dynamic model to simulate CO2 absorption by using different alkanolamines as absorption solvents. The model is based upon transient mass and energy balances for the chemical species commonly present in CO2 gas-liquid absorption. A computer code has been written to implement the proposed model. Simulation results are discussed. The reported model simulates well the response to dynamic changes in input conditions. The proposed model can be used to optimize and control the separation of carbon-14 in the form of CO2 in the nuclear industry.

Impedance changes of the anode, cathode and solution were examined for an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) under varying conditions. An MFC inoculated with a pre-enriched microbial culture resulted in a startup time of less than ten days. Over this period, the anode impedance decreased below the cathode impedance, suggesting a cathode-limited power output. Increasing the anode flow rate did not impact the anode impedance significantly, but it decreased the cathode impedance by 65%. Increasing the anode-medium ionic strength also decreased the cathode impedance. These impedance results provide insight into electron and proton transport mechanisms and can be used to improve MFC performance.

Recovering uranium from seawater has been the subject of many studies for decades, and has recently seen significant progress in materials development since the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has become involved. With DOE direction, the uranium uptake for amidoxime-based polymer adsorbents has more than tripled in capacity. In an effort to better understand how these new adsorbent materials behave under different environmental stimuli, several experimental and modeling based studies have been employed to investigate impacts of competing ions, salinity, pH, and other factors on uranium uptake. For this study, the effect of temperature and type of comonomer on uranium adsorption by three different amidoxime adsorbents (AF1, 38H, AI8) was examined. Experimental measurements of uranium uptake were taken in 1−L batch reactors from 10 to 40 °C. A chemisorption model was developed and applied in order to estimate unknown system parameters through optimization. Experimental results demonstrated that the overall uranium chemisorption process for all three materials is endothermic, which was also mirrored in the model results. Model simulations show very good agreement with the data and were able to predict the temperature effect on uranium adsorption as experimental conditions changed. This model may be used for predicting uranium uptake by other amidoxime materials.
