Abstract

Following a waste-To-wealth approach, humic acid (HA) was exploited as a flame retardant additive. The effect of its addition alone and in combination with urea (UR) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) on the thermal, fire, and mechanical performances of a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA)-based epoxy resin modified with (3-Aminopropyl)-Triethoxysilane (AP) and cured with aliphatic isophoronediamine (IDA) has been investigated. Unlike in previous studies, a UL 94-V-0 classification was achieved for epoxy resin containing HA at 6 wt % and APP at only 1 wt % phosphorus (P) loading. The presence of silicon-modified epoxy chains ameliorated the distribution of the biowaste within the resin, and the addition of HA alone avoided melt dripping. Besides, APP and UR promoted a remarkable reduction (up to 52%) of the peak heat release rate (pHRR) values and a significant delay (up to 21%) of the time to ignition in cone calorimetry tests, and hence an increase (up to 1.8 min) of the time to flashover, without any detrimental effect on the overall mechanical behavior. The evolved gas, thermal, and fire analysis was used to propose the combined mode of action of HA, UR, APP, and silicon in the fire performance improvement of the hybrid epoxy system.

Abstract

A novel procedure to synthesize poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate)-silica blend hybrids is presented. Methacrylate monomers bearing an alkoxysilyl unit, prepared by Michael addition of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) to 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) were employed. By 13C NMR and mass analysis it was possible to establish the formation of coupling hybrid species. Hybrid materials, with final concentration ranging from 10% to 30% w/w of silica gel to the mass of polymer, were obtained through basic catalyzed sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and the alkoxysilyl unit of the hybrid monomer, followed by in-situ free-radical polymerization. The hybrids were characterized as far as concerns their thermal properties (glass transition temperature, decomposition temperature), their sorption behaviour in water, and in-vitro bioactivity. Optical transparency, higher glass transition temperature, and higher decomposition temperature than pHEMA suggest an increase in either density or intensity of cross-links between the organic and the inorganic phases. The swelling ratio of the 30% hybrids is comparable to pHEMA, whereas it is lower for the other compositions. In-vitro bioactivity of the hybrids, due to the inorganic phase, was ascertained. Soaking time required for apatite deposition on the samples surface decreases as the content of silica gel increases. Therefore, the obtained bioactive hybrids can be used to make bioactive scaffolds for bone engineering.

Abstract

Submicrometric particles were obtained, through the Stoeber method, from alc. (ethanol) solns. of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTS), at total alkoxide concn. 0.15 M, in the presence of ammonia (0.1 M) and water (8.8 M) and fluorescein sodium (0.40 m). Nano-sized particles were obtained from solns. 0.15 M of TEOS or APTS. A surprising particle size increase was obsd. when mixing TEOS and APTS at const. overall alkoxide content (0.15 M). The result was explained, on the basis of the known aggregation model, by taking into account that the substitution of TEOS to APTS and vice-versa changes the ratio of nucleation and aggregation rates and that nuclei of different size are expected to form when the alkoxides are mixed. The mixing appears to change the evolution of particle population favoring the establishment of a size distribution wherein the dominant aggregation event can be between the freshly generated nuclei and large aggregates, which is the faster aggregation event. The closer is the TEOS/APTS ratio to 1 the sooner particles size differentiation would occur and the fewer but greater particles would form, in short times.
