In many regions, nitrogen (N) deficiency limits pepper cultivation, presenting significant cultivation challenges. This study investigates the impact of N deficiency and silicon (Si) supplementation on physiological responses and antioxidant modulation in pepper plants, focusing particularly on the homeostasis of carbon (C), nitrogen, and phosphorus (P), and their effects on growth and biomass production. Conducted in a factorial design, the experiment examined pepper plants under conditions of N sufficiency and deficiency, with and without Si supplementation (0.0 mM and 2.0 mM). Results showed that N deficiency sensitizes pepper plants, leading to increased electrolyte leakage (39.59%) and disrupted C, N, and P homeostasis. This disruption manifests as reductions in photosynthetic pigments (-64.53%), photochemical efficiency (-14.92%), and the synthesis of key metabolites such as total free amino acids (-86.97%), sucrose (-53.88%), and soluble sugars (-39.96%), ultimately impairing plant growth. However, Si supplementation was found to alleviate these stresses. It modulated the antioxidant system, enhanced the synthesis of ascorbic acid (+30.23), phenolic compounds (+33.19%), and flavonoids (+7.52%), and reduced cellular electrolyte leakage (-25.02%). Moreover, Si helped establish a new homeostasis of C, N, and P, optimizing photosynthetic and nutritional efficiency by improving the utilization of C (+17.46%) and N (+13.20%). These Si-induced modifications in plant physiology led to increased synthesis of amino acids (+362.20%), soluble sugars (+51.34%), and sucrose (77.42%), thereby supporting enhanced growth of pepper plants. Background: Midazolam is routinely used as preanesthetic medication in pediatric patients. Recently, dexmedetomidine has emerged as an alternative as a premedicant. We aimed to add more evidence about the efficacy and safety of two common routes of administration for pediatric premedication: oral midazolam versus intranasal dexmedetomidine., Methods: We systematically searched Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) involving patients ≤ 18 years old undergoing preanesthetic medication and comparing intranasal dexmedetomidine with oral midazolam. Risk Ratio (RR) and Mean Difference (MD) with 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) were computed using a random effects model. Trial-sequential analyses were performed to assess inconsistency., Results: Sixteen RCTs (1,239 patients) were included. Mean age was 5.5 years old, and most procedures were elective. There was no difference in satisfactory induction or mask acceptance (RR = 1.15, 95% CI 0.97-1.37; p = 0.11). There was a higher incidence of satisfactory separation from parents in the dexmedetomidine group (RR = 1.40; 95% CI 1.13-1.74; p = 0.002). Dexmedetomidine was also associated with a reduction in the incidence of emergence agitation (RR = 0.35; 95% CI 0.14-0.88; p = 0.02). Heart rate and mean arterial pressure were marginally lower in the dexmedetomidine group but without clinical repercussions., Conclusion: Compared with oral midazolam, intranasal dexmedetomidine demonstrated better separation from parents and lower incidence of emergence agitation in pediatric premedication, without a difference in satisfactory induction. Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist receptors (GLP-1RAs), medications used for glycemic control and weight loss, are increasing worldwide. In the perioperative period, the major concern related to GLP-1RA is gastric emptying delay and risk of aspiration. This meta-analysis and systematic review compared the risks and benefits of using GLP-1 agonist receptors and control in surgical and nonsurgical procedures under anesthesia or sedation., Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane for randomized controlled trials and observational studies involving patients > 18 years undergoing elective surgeries or procedures. Outcomes of interest were pre-procedural gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, residual gastric content assessed by endoscopy, pulmonary aspiration during anesthesia/sedation, perioperative glycemic control, postoperative inotropic support, nausea/vomiting (PONV), atrial fibrillation, and 30-day mortality rate. We used a random effects model, with odds ratio and mean difference computed for binary and continuous outcomes, respectively., Results: Fourteen randomized and observational studies with 2143 adult patients undergoing elective surgeries and procedures were included. GLP-1RA resulted in increased pre-procedural GI symptoms (OR 7.66; 95% CI 3.42, 17.17; p < 0.00001; I 2  = 0%) and elevated residual gastric content (OR 6.08; 95% CI 2.86, 12.94; p < 0.00001; I 2  = 0%). GLP-1RA resulted in lower glycemic levels (MD - 0.73; 95% CI - 1.13, - 0.33; p = 0.0003; I 2  = 90%) and lower rate of rescue insulin administration (OR 0.39; 95% CI 0.23, 0.68 p = 0.0009; I 2  = 35%). There was no significant difference in rate of perioperative hypoglycemia (OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.29, 1.24; p = 0.17; I 2  = 0%), hyperglycemia (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.59, 1.34; p = 0.58; I 2  = 38%), need for postoperative inotropic support (OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.33, 1.01; p = 0.05; I 2  = 0%), atrial fibrillation (OR 1.02; 95% CI 0.52, 2.01; p = 0.95; I 2  = 16%), rate of PONV (OR 1.35; 95% CI 0.82, 2.21; p = 0.24; I 2  = 0%), and 30-day mortality rate (OR 0.54; 95% CI 0.14, 2.05; p = 0.25; I 2  = 0%)., Conclusion: Compared to control, pre-procedural GLP-1RA increased the rate of GI symptoms and the risk of elevated residual gastric content despite adherence to fasting guidelines. GLP-1RA improved glycemic control and decreased the rate of rescue insulin administration. Background: Dengue virus (DENV) is an arbovirus transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which can cause severe conditions such as hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. These conditions are associated with adverse social, clinical, and economic consequences in Brazil. Herein, the Wolbachia mosquito replacement method is a promising dengue control strategy., Methods: We estimated the economic impact of implementing the Wolbachia mosquito replacement method in seven Brazilian cities. A mathematical microsimulation model tracked nearly 23 million inhabitants over a 20-year period, considering the transitions between five different health states (susceptible, inapparent, outpatient, hospitalised and death). Direct costs included local dengue control programs, Wolbachia implementation and dengue care. Indirect costs related to death and productivity loss, as well as disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) averted were also considered., Findings: Without Wolbachia, the model projected 1,762,688 reported dengue cases over 20 years. Implementing the Wolbachia method would avert at least 1,295,566 dengue cases, resulting in lower costs and greater effectiveness in all simulated cities. On average, for every 1000 inhabitants followed for 20 years, the Wolbachia method yielded a cost difference of USD 538,233.68 (BRL 2,691,168.40) and averted 5.56 DALYs. Net monetary benefits (NMB) were positive in all seven cities, ranging from USD 110.72 (BRL 553.59) to USD 1399.19 (BRL 6995.95) per inhabitant. Alternative scenarios have also shown a favourable return on investment with a positive benefit-cost ratio (BCR)., Interpretation: Wolbachia is likely a cost-effective strategy in the Brazilian context, consistent with international studies. Background: Orchids are grown without soil in many regions of the world, but there is a lack of studies to define the balanced and adequate nutrient solution for their cultivation, mainly in the vegetative growth phase. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the optimal concentration of the nutrient solution based on the proposal by Hoagland and Arnon (1950) in the vegetative growth phase capable of increasing the nutrient contents, growth, and dry matter production of Dendrobium Tubtim Siam and Phalaenopsis Taisuco Swan. In addition, this paper aims to estimate a new nutrient solution from the optimal nutrient contents in the dry matter of these orchid species to be used in the vegetative growth phase., Results: Nutrient contents, growth, and dry matter production increased as the nutrient solution concentration increased up to an average concentration of 62 and 77% for D. Tubtim Siam and P. Taisuco Swan, respectively. We found that the Hoagland and Arnon solution presented a group of nutrients with concentrations above the requirement for P. Taisuco Swan (nitrogen, phosphor, calcium, and sulfur) and D. Tubtim Siam (phosphor, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), while other nutrients in the solution did not meet the nutritional demand of these orchid species, inducing nutritional imbalance in the vegetative growth phase., Conclusion: We conclude that using a balanced nutrient solution created specifically for each orchid species in vegetative growth might favor their sustainable cultivation by optimizing the use of nutrients in the growing medium., (© 2024. The congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) has been characterized as a set of several brain changes, such as reduced brain volume and subcortical calcifications, in addition to cognitive deficits. Microcephaly is one of the possible complications found in newborns exposed to Zika virus (ZIKV) during pregnancy, although it is an impacting clinical sign. This study aimed to investigate the consequences of a model of congenital ZIKV infection by evaluating the histopathology, blood-brain barrier, and neuroinflammation in pup rats 24 h after birth, and neurodevelopment of the offspring. Pregnant rats were inoculated subcutaneously with ZIKV-BR at the dose 1 × 10 7 plaque-forming unit (PFU mL-1) of ZIKV isolated in Brazil (ZIKV-BR) on gestational day 18 (G18). A set of pups, 24 h after birth, was euthanized. The brain was collected and later evaluated for the histopathology of brain structures through histological analysis. Additionally, analyses of the blood-brain barrier were conducted using western blotting, and neuroinflammation was assessed using ELISA. Another set of animals was evaluated on postnatal days 3, 6, 9, and 12 for neurodevelopment by observing the developmental milestones. Our results revealed hippocampal atrophy in ZIKV animals, in addition to changes in the blood-brain barrier structure and pro-inflammatory cytokines expression increase. Regarding neurodevelopment, a delay in important reflexes during the neonatal period in ZIKV animals was observed. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the hand hygiene process after elementary school students participated in an educational activity using an automated digital technology called Tutor Robot., Method: Quasi-experimental study developed in 2019 with elementary school students (n=203). Hand hygiene was performed with a fluorescent solution before and after participating in an educational activity with a tutor robot. The images were recorded in a dark chamber and the data related to area of residence, grade, gender, hand position and laterality were analyzed by Anova and Holm-Sidak Post-Hoc (p≤0,05)., Results: All conditions studied improved the hand hygiene process after activity with the tutor robot. There was no association between grade, gender, and dominant hand and the performance in the hand hygiene process, however, students from urban areas performed better than those from rural areas., Conclusion: The activity with the tutor robot represented an important resource for conducting health education actions on hand hygiene and can also be tested in other settings and populations.

Studies of boron (B) and silicon (Si) synergy in cotton crops have shown promising results; however, the focus was on the foliar application of B and Si. Nonetheless, B is an element with little mobility in the plant and its best form of application is in the soil. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the synergistic effect of soil applied B and foliar applied sSi on fiber quality and crop yield of cotton. For this purpose, a field experiment was carried out using cotton cultivar FM 985 GLTP. The soil's B in the experimental site is classified as low for cotton cultivation. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete-block design, in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme, with three doses of B: 0.0 kg ha -1 (deficiency), 2.0 kg ha -1 (recommended dose), and 4.0 kg ha -1 (high dose) in the absence and presence (920 g L -1 ) of Si, with four replications. One week after the 4 th application of Si, B and Si leaf content was determined. At boll opening, crop yield was estimated, and fiber quality analysis was realized. Boron deficiency reduced cotton yield, in 11 and 9%, compared to the application of 2 and 4 kg ha -1 of B, respectively. The presence of Si, however, increased plant yield in 5% in the treatments with 0 and 2 kg ha -1 of B, respectively. Cotton fiber length and elongation were not influenced by the B doses and Si presence. Fiber breaking strength was increased in 5% by the presence of Si and was not influenced by B deficiency. Micronaire was 8% smaller in the treatment with 0 kg ha -1 of B and 6% smaller in the absence of Si. Short fiber index was 4% greater in the plants of the treatment with 0 kg ha -1 of B. The results of this study reports that the complementation with Si via foliar application increases fiber quality by enhance breaking strength and micronaire. In conclusion, the interaction between soil-applied B and foliar-applied Si is beneficial for cotton cultivation, resulting in high cotton yield with better fiber quality., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Potassium (K) deficiency in maize plants damages the nutritional functions of K. However, few studies have investigated the influence of K on C:N:P stoichiometry, the nutritional efficiency of these nutrients, and whether the mitigating effect of Si in plants under stress could act on these nutritional mechanisms involved with C, N, and P to mitigate K deficiency. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of K deficiency in the absence and presence of Si on N and P uptake, C:N:P stoichiometric homeostasis, nutritional efficiency, photosynthetic rate, and dry matter production of maize plants. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions using a 2 × 2 factorial scheme comprising two K concentrations: potassium deficiency (7.82 mg L -1 ) and potassium sufficiency (234.59 mg L -1 ). These concentrations were combined with the absence (0.0 mg L -1 ) and presence of Si (56.17 mg L -1 ), arranged in randomized blocks with five replicates. Potassium deficiency decreased stoichiometric ratios (C:N and C:P) and the plant's C, N, and P accumulation. Furthermore, it decreased the use efficiency of these nutrients, net photosynthesis, and biomass of maize plants. The results showed that Si supply stood out in K-deficient maize plants by increasing the C, N, and P accumulation. Moreover, it decreased stoichiometric ratios (C:N, C:P, N:P, C:Si, N:Si, and P:Si) and increased the efficiencies of uptake, translocation, and use of nutrients, net photosynthesis, and dry matter production of maize plants. Therefore, the low nutritional efficiency of C, N, and P caused by K deficiency in maize plants can be alleviated with the supply of 56.17 mg L -1 of Si in the nutrient solution. Objective: To learn about the perception of fathers regarding their inclusion in health services and/or educational activities., Method: Qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study addressing 22 fathers participating in a group of pregnant women in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the content analysis technique., Results: The following categories emerged from the participants' reports: fathers' perceptions regarding their presence in health services and fathers' perceptions regarding their participation in the group of pregnant women. Additionally, they provided contributions and suggestions regarding their experiences with the group's meetings., Conclusion: The participants felt excluded from the services, which shows that health intervention strategies need to be (re)constructed to implement actions that include fathers as active participants in care, so they recognize the importance of their role in healthy human development.

Background: In many regions of the world, K is being depleted from soils due to agricultural intensification a lack of accessibility, and the high cost of K. Thus, there is an urgent need for a sustainable strategy for crops in this environment. Si is an option for mitigating stress due to nutritional deficiency. However, the underlying effects of Si in mitigating K deficiency C:N:P homeostasis still remains unknown for bean plants. This is a species of great worldwide importance. Thus, this study aims to evaluate whether i) K deficiency modifies the homeostatic balance of C, N and P, and, if so, ii) Si supply can reduce damage caused to nutritional stoichiometry, nutrient use efficiency, and production of dry mass in bean plants., Results: K deficiency caused a reduction in the stoichiometric ratios C:N, C:P, and P:Si in shoots and C:N, C:P, C:Si, N:Si, and P:Si in roots, resulting in a decrease in K content and use efficiency and reducing biomass production. The application of Si in K-deficient plants modified the ratios C:N, C:Si, N:P, N:Si, and P:Si in shoots and C:N, C:P, C:Si, N:Si, N:P, and P:Si in roots, increasing the K content and efficiency, reducing the loss of biomass. In bean plants with K sufficiency, Si also changed the stoichiometric ratios C:N, C:P, C:Si, N:P, N:Si, and P:Si in shoots and C:N, C:Si, N:Si, and P:Si in roots, increasing K content only in roots and the use efficiency of C and P in shoots and C, N, and P in roots, increasing the biomass production only in roots., Conclusion: K deficiency causes damage to the C:N:P homeostatic balance, reducing the efficiency of nutrient use and biomass production. However, Si is a viable alternative to attenuate these nutritional damages, favoring bean growth. The future perspective is that the use of Si in agriculture in underdeveloped economies with restrictions on the use of K will constitute a sustainable strategy to increase food security., (© 2023. Silicon (Si) application, especially via foliar application, may be promising to attenuate oxidative damage, as Si can improve the non-enzymatic antioxidant system of cotton flowers. However, studies that address the relationship between boron (B) and Si in cotton flowers are still scarce. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the effect of silicon alone and added to the borate solution applied via foliar spray on the oxidative stress; proline, carotenoid, and phenol contents; and biomass production of cotton flowers grown under moderate B deficiency. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with ten replicates and the following five treatments: control (cotton plants under boron deficiency); water application (without B and Si); boron application; silicon application; and B + Si. The application of B, Si, and B + Si reduced the malondialdehyde content in cotton petals by 45%, 48%, and 59%, respectively, and in cotton anthers by57%, 64%, and 67%, respectively. The dry matter of cotton petals in the respective treatments increased by 20%, 16%, 35%, and 44%, while the dry matter of cotton anthers increased by 40%, 24%, 48%, and 53%, respectively, compared to the treatment with water only. There was a strong relationship between B content and dry matter; Si content and the contents of phenols and proline; and carotenoid content and the contents of MDA and H 2 O 2 . B deficiency can induce oxidative stress specifically in the petals and anthers of cotton, with carotenoids being the main defense mechanism in flowers, while Si is capable of strongly activating defense mechanisms from phenol and proline. In conclusion, the development of organs related to reproduction is impaired by B deficiency. Background: C:N:P homeostasis in plants guarantees optimal levels of these nutrients in plant metabolism. H However, one of the causes to the effects of deficit irrigation is the loss of C:N:P homeostasis in leaves and stems that causes reduction in the growth of sugarcane. Being able to measure the impact of water deficit on C:N:P homeostasis in plants from the stoichiometric ratios of the concentrations of these nutrients in leaves and stems. This loss causes a decrease in nutritional efficiency, but can be mitigated with the use of silicon. Silicon favors the homeostasis of these nutrients and crop productivity. The magnitude of this benefit depends on the absorption of Si by the plant and Si availability in the soil, which varies with the type of soil used. Thus, this study aims to evaluate whether the application of Si via fertigation is efficient in increasing the absorption of Si and whether it is capable of modifying the homeostatic balance of C:N:P of the plant, causing an increase in nutritional efficiency and consequently in the production of biomass in leaves and stems of sugarcane ratoon cultivated with deficient and adequate irrigations in different tropical soils., Results: Water deficit caused biological losses in concentrations and accumulation of C, N, and P, and reduced the nutrient use efficiency and biomass production of sugarcane plants cultivated in three tropical soils due to disturbances in the stoichiometric homeostasis of C:N:P. The application of Si increased the concentration and accumulation of Si, C, N, and P and their use efficiency and reduced the biological damage caused by water deficit due to the modification of homeostatic balance of C:N:P by ensuring sustainability of the production of sugarcane biomass in tropical soils. However, the intensity of attenuation of such deleterious effects stood out in plants cultivated in Eutrophic Red Oxisols. Si contributed biologically by improving the performance of sugarcane ratoon with an adequate irrigation due to the optimization of stoichiometric ratios of C:N:P; increased the accumulation and the use efficiency of C, N, and P, and promoted production gains in biomass of sugarcane in three tropical soils., Conclusion: Our study shows that fertigation with Si can mitigate the deleterious effects of deficient irrigation or potentiate the beneficial effects using an adequate irrigation system due to the induction of a new stoichiometric homeostasis of C:N:P, which in turn improves the nutritional efficiency of sugarcane cultivated in tropical soils., (© 2023. Euphorbia hirta L. is a weed species that is tolerant to the most used herbicide in agriculture, glyphosate. The anatomical characteristics of plants influence the processes of absorption and translocation of herbicides. The objective of this work was to characterize the anatomy of the aerial vegetative axis (leaves and stem) of E. hirta , to support the establishment of strategies for better control of this species with herbicides. The plants were grown in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. When they reached sizes between 8 and 12 cm, samples of stems and leaves were collected, fixed in FAA 50, and stored in 70% ethanol. Subsequently, the samples were processed following usual light microscopy techniques. In cross-section, the stem of E. hirta has a circular shape. The leaf epidermis is uniseriate composed of isodiametric cells of compact arrangement and with the presence of multicellular trichomes and anthocyanin. As for the morphometric parameters evaluated, the young leaves have a lower thickness in the abaxial epidermis. Based on the anatomical characteristics observed in E. hirta , the main barriers that can act in the absorption of herbicides are the high hairiness and the high content of anthocyanin in the epidermal cells.

Silicon (Si) may be involved in the modification of C:N:P stoichiometry and in physiological processes, increasing sorghum growth and grain production. The objective was to evaluate the effect of Si supply on C:N:P:Si stoichiometry, physiological response, growth, and grain production of sorghum. The experiment was carried out in pots with four concentrations of Si: 0; 1.2; 2.4; and 3.6 mmol L -1 in a completely randomized design, with six replicates. Physiological attributes and dark green color index were measured and grain and biomass production were determined. Posteriorly, the plant material was ground to determine silicon (Si), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents in order to analyze C:N:P:Si stoichiometry. C:Si and C:N ratios decreased at all Si concentrations applied (1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 mmol L -1 ) and in all plant parts studied, being lower at 3.6 mmol L -1 . The lowest C:P ratios of leaves and roots were observed at 3.6 mmol L -1 Si and the lowest C:P ratio of stems was observed at 1.2 mmol L -1 Si. Si concentrations were not significant for the N:P ratio of leaves. The highest N:P ratio of stems was observed at 3.6 mmol L -1 , while the lowest N:P ratio of roots was observed at 2.4 and 3.6 mmol L -1 . Regardless of photosynthetic parameters, the application of 1.2 mmol L -1 Si enhanced photosynthetic rate. The application of 2.4 and 3.6 mmol L -1 enhanced stomatal conductance and dark green color index. The mass of 1000 grains was not influenced by Si applications, while Si applications at all concentrations studied (1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 mmol L -1 ) enhanced shoot and total dry matter, not affecting root dry matter and grain production. Studies with silicon (Si) in sugarcane indicate a greater response in productivity in plants under stress, and the underlying mechanisms of Si in the crop are poorly reported. In this context, the benefits of Si in the crop's stem production are expected to occur at the C:N:P stoichiometry level in plant tissues, benefiting plants with and without stress. However, the extension of this response may vary in different soils. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate if fertigation with Si modifies the C:N:P stoichiometry and if it can increase sugarcane's nutritional efficiency and vegetative and productive parameters. Therefore, three experiments were installed using pre-sprouted seedlings to cultivate sugarcane in tropical soils belonging to the Quartzarenic Neosol, Eutrophic Red Latosol, and Dystrophic Red Latosol classes. The treatments comprised a 2 × 2 factorial scheme in each soil. The first factor was composed without water restriction (water retention = 70%; AWD) and with water restriction (water retention = 35%; PWD). The second factor presented Si concentrations (0 mM and 1.8 mM) arranged in randomized blocks with five replications. Fertigation with Si increases the Si and P concentration, the C and N efficiency, the C:N ratio, and the dry mass production. However, it decreases the C and N concentration and the C:P, C:Si, and N:P ratios in sugarcane leaves and stems regardless of the water regime adopted in the three tropical soils. Cluster and principal components analysis indicated that the intensity of the beneficial effects of Si fertigation on sugarcane plants varies depending on the cultivation soil and water conditions. We found that Si can be used in sugarcane with and without water stress. There is increasing support for water molecules playing a role in signal propagation through G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). However, exploration of the hydration features of GPCRs is still in its infancy. Here, we combined site-specific labeling with unnatural amino acids to molecular dynamics to delineate how local hydration of the ghrelin receptor growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is rearranged upon activation. We found that GHSR is characterized by a specific hydration pattern that is selectively remodeled by pharmacologically distinct ligands and by the lipid environment. This process is directly related to the concerted movements of the transmembrane domains of the receptor. The aim of this study was to predict carcass traits of Santa Inês lambs finished in tropical pastures by using biometric measurements. Data originated from two experiments involving 56 lambs (32 in experiment I and 24 in experiment II). In both experiments, the sheep were finished in that were finished in pastures of Panicum maximum and Brachiaria brizantha , experiment I being conducted in the rainy season and experiment II in the dry season. The following biometric measurements were recorded before slaughter: body length (BL), withers height (WH), rump height (RH), thorax width (TW), rump width (RW), chest width (CW), heart girth (HG), thigh circumference (TC), rump circumference (RC) and leg length (LL), in addition to live weight at slaughter (SW). After slaughter, hot carcass weight (HCW), cold carcass weight (CCW) and the weights of primal cuts (shoulder, neck, loin, leg and rib) were recorded. In the equations generated to predict SW, HCW and CCW, R 2 ranged from 0.58 to 0.91 and the measurements of WH, TC, CW, HG and RW were the most relevant. In the equations developed to predict the weight of primal cuts, in turn, R 2 ranged from 0.26 to 0.99. In these models, SW, BL, CW, TC, LL and HG explained most of the variation in the weight of primal cuts. Biometric measurements can be used to accurately and precisely predict HCW, CCW and the weight of primal cuts from the carcass of Santa Inês sheep finished in tropical pastures, since the equations presented R 2 and correlation coefficient and agreement above 0.8.

Soil salinity affects sugarcane (Saccharum officinale L.) production in arid and semiarid climates, severely reducing productivity. This study aimed to identify differentially regulated proteins in two cultivars that differ markedly in tolerance of saline soil. Plants were grown for 30 days and then subjected to treatments of 0 and 160 mM NaCl for 15 days. The tolerant cultivar showed a 3-fold upregulation of lipid metabolising enzymes, GDSL-motif lipases, which are associated with defence to abiotic stress, and which were not upregulated in the sensitive cultivar. Lipoxygenase was 2-fold upregulated in the tolerant cultivar but not in the sensitive cultivar, as were Type III chlorophyll a/b binding proteins. Other differences were that in the sensitive cultivar, the key enzyme of C4 photosynthesis, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was downregulated, along with other chloroplast enzymes. Na+ concentrations had not reached toxic concentrations in either cultivar by this time of exposure to salt, so these changes would be in response to the osmotic effect of the soil salinity, and likely be in common with plants undergoing drought stress.

Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus globulus are important species for the Brazilian forestry industry. E. grandis plantations are mainly found in tropical regions, yet E. globulus plants are usually cultivated under moderate to low temperature conditions. As temperature seems to be a key factor for the planting of these species, we revisited our previously generated shotgun proteomics dataset to identify the main patterns of proteome regulation induced by thermal stimulus and to pinpoint specific proteins involved in the environmental response. Large-scale analysis has pointed out the different proteomic responses of E. grandis and E. globulus under temperature stimulus, with 296 proteins considered to be differentially regulated in the stems of Eucalyptus spp. grown at different temperatures. A stringent filtering approach was used to identify the most differentially regulated proteins. Through the stringent criteria, 66 proteins were found to be enriched in the plant species. Cultivation of E. globulus plants in low-temperature conditions induced the highest number of differentially regulated proteins. Additionally, metabolic proteins were mostly down-regulated, while stress-related proteins were majorly up-regulated in both species.
