The transmission of vector infectious diseases, which produces complex spatiotemporal patterns, is analyzed by a periodically forced two-dimensional cellular automata model. The system, which comprises three population levels, is introduced to describe complex features of the dynamics of the vector transmitted dengue epidemics, known to be very sensitive to seasonal variables. The three coupled levels represent the human, the adult and immature vector populations. The dynamics includes external seasonality forcing (rainfall intensity data), human and mosquito mobility, and vector control effects. The model parameters, even if bounded to well defined intervals obtained from reported data, can be selected to reproduce specific epidemic outbursts. In the current study, explicit results are obtained by comparison with actual data retrieved from the time-series of dengue epidemics in two cities in Brazil. The results show fluctuations that are not captured by mean-field models. It also reveals the qualitative behavior of the spatiotemporal patterns of the epidemics. In the extreme situation of absence of external periodic drive, the model predicts completely distinct long time evolution. The model is robust in the sense that it is able to reproduce the time series of dengue epidemics of different cities, provided the forcing term takes into account the local rainfall modulation. Finally, the dependence between epidemics threshold and vector control undergoes a transition from power law to stretched exponential behavior due to human mobility effect., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

- Abstract
Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been widely used in patients with COVID-19, but uncertainty remains about the determinants of in-hospital mortality and data on post-discharge outcomes are scarce. The aims of this study were to investigate the variables associated with in-hospital outcomes in patients who received ECMO during the first wave of COVID-19 and to describe the status of patients 6 months after ECMO initiation. Methods: EuroECMO-COVID is a prospective, multicentre, observational study developed by the European Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. This study was based on data from patients aged 16 years or older who received ECMO support for refractory COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic—from March 1 to Sept 13, 2020—at 133 centres in 21 countries. In-hospital mortality and mortality 6 months after ECMO initiation were the primary outcomes. Mixed-Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate associations between patient and management-related variables (eg, patient demographics, comorbidities, pre-ECMO status, and ECMO characteristics and complications) and in-hospital deaths. Survival status at 6 months was established through patient contact or institutional charts review. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04366921, and is ongoing. Findings: Between March 1 and Sept 13, 2020, 1215 patients (942 [78%] men and 267 [22%] women; median age 53 years [IQR 46–60]) were included in the study. Median ECMO duration was 15 days (IQR 8–27). 602 (50%) of 1215 patients died in hospital, and 852 (74%) patients had at least one complication. Multiorgan failure was the leading cause of death (192 [36%] of 528 patients who died with available data). In mixed-Cox analyses, age of 60 years or older, use of inotropes and vasopressors before ECMO initiation, chronic renal failure, and time from intubation to ECMO initiation of 4 days or more were associated with higher in-hospital mortality. 613 patients

- Abstract
The present study describes the photocatalytic potential of the successfully synthesized nanocrystalline PbS/TiO2nanocomposites in the photodegradation of chloramphenicol and paracetamol. PbS and PbS/TiO2nanoparticles were synthesized using biological sulphide produced by sulphate-reducing bacteria in batch and in a coupled bioremediation system (upflow anaerobic packed-bed reactor) for acid mine drainage treatment, yielding near-complete metal precipitation (~ 100–99%, respectively). The PbS and PbS/TiO2composites obtained using sulphide generated in batch have an average particle size ranging from 17 to 25 nm and 15 to 20 nm, respectively, while in bioreactor, both PbS and PbS/TiO2particles have a similar size range from 20 to 50 nm. All the produced particles presented crystalline cubic structure. The specific surface area of TiO2and PbS/TiO2was estimated to be 46.559 m2/g and 38.005 m2/g, respectively. Chloramphenicol removal by photolysis was about 61% after 60 min of Hg irradiation and 36% under sunlight exposition. Chloramphenicol photodegradation using PbS/TiO2as catalyst was successfully performed in a photoreactor (Hg medium pressure, 450 W) and under solar exposition with a high drug removal efficiency of 96% and 93% after 60 min and 240 min irradiation, respectively. Using TiO2as a catalyst for photodegradation achieved 98% removal for both Hg and sunlight irradiation (UV index ranging 7–8) after 60 min and 240 min, respectively. Paracetamol removal by photolysis was about 18%. Drug’s photocatalytic degradation using PbS/TiO2was successfully performed under sunlight exposition with a high removal efficiency of 93%, while in the presence of TiO2, the removal was complete, after 235 min irradiation.

The eye is one of the five major sensory organs of a living being. Because some situations and incidents can be cured and treated but others cannot, losing sight causes a person to become partially deactivated in his or her daily activities. The two most common conditions that cannot be easily cured in a variety of situations are total blindness and color blindness. Even though there are many traditional and modern assistive devices, most of them are unable to meet the requirements of visually impaired people because of usability, data accuracy, and cost issues. The ideology behind this research was to develop a mobile application that helps visually challenged people do their daily tasks without any external assistance. Instead of using an external device, this system recommends hanging up the phone using a code or keeping the phone in the upper pocket of the shirt so that the phone's camera can easily capture the data. This developed mobile application's aim is to help visually challenged people do their daily tasks without external assistance. It activates an intelligent voice assistant to guide the user using voice commands in navigation, object identification, text, and currency reading, and also weather forecasting. The application also helps colorblind people identify which color blindness category they belong to by using Ishihara test plates. The goal is to reduce the latency of data processing and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of this application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The causes of the low desiccation tolerance and low longevity of coffee seeds have not yet been fully elucidated, and a full understanding of their complex physiology is of great interest. Among several alternatives, the loss of antioxidant capacity in seeds may be related to their rapid loss in quality during storage. The objective of this study was to determine the total antioxidant capacity of coffee harvested at different ripeness stages before and after the storage of seeds with different water contents and to relate antioxidant capacity to physiological quality. Seeds in the greenish-yellow or cherry stages, recently harvested or stored for nine months at 10 °C with 40, 30, 20 and 12% water content (wet basis ? wb), were submitted to physiological and biochemical quality evaluations, and the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) was determined. The germination and root protrusion of coffee seeds from greenish-yellow and cherry fruits were not affected by drying, but seeds harvested at physiological maturity had greater vigor when the moisture content was lower. The quality of coffee seeds decreased during storage, and this decrease was greater in seeds stored with higher water contents. Coffee seeds in the greenish-yellow stage had a higher antioxidant capacity than those in the cherry stage when recently harvested, but there was a substantial reduction in this capacity during storage at both maturation stages. Coffee seed deterioration is related to a reduction in antioxidant capacity, and the isoenzymatic profiles of the antioxidant process are little affected by the seed maturation stage. The deterioration of coffee seeds during storage is related to a reduction in their total antioxidant capacity, regardless of their maturation stage, being more pronounced in the greenish-yellow stage. - Abstract
According to the European Union regulation, some countries have established a pre-market notification system for food supplements while others have not. As this regulation is unfulfilled, a notified and marketed food supplement ingredient in one country may be forbidden in another. Even though food supplements shall not be placed on the market if unsafe, some products may still expose the consumers to risks. The risk is increased by easier access due to worldwide dissemination fostered by the internet and free movement of goods in the European Union. The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed and the Emerging Risks Exchange Network are described. To date, the European Union legislation does not include a provision to establish a dedicated vigilance system for food supplements (Nutrivigilance). Six European Union countries have nevertheless set up national systems, which are presented. The present lack of European Union data collection harmonization, does not allow easy cooperation between countries. This article advocates for creating a coordinated European Nutrivigilance System to detect and scrutinize adverse effects of food supplements. This, to help in directing science-based risk assessments and reinforce the science-based decision of policy makers to improve public health safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
