Abstract

Periodic photic stimuli across the entire electroencephalographic (EEG) frequency range were used in an attempt to assess EEG functional differences between chronic schizophrenic patients and control subjects. The EEG responses to these photic stimuli were significantly attenuated in the schizophrenic patients, specifically at the frequencies within the EEG alpha range. The schizophrenic patients also showed an alpha range attenuation in the "no stimulus" EEG alpha measure, such that there was a significant correlation across subjects between the "stimulus" and "no stimulus" EEG alpha range abnormalities. These abnormalities are discussed with reference to possible dysfunctional thalamic mechanisms involved in the pacing of EEG alpha activity and the gating of information through the cerebral cortex.

Abstract

[Gd2(px(DTTA)(sub 2)(H2O)(sub 4)](super 2-) and [Gd2(mX(DTTA)(sub 2)0(H2O)(sub 4)](super 2-) the two nuclear dinuclear Gd(super III) complexes are synthesized based on a xylene core substituted with diethylenetriamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate (DTTA) chelators in para or meta position. The increased molecular size as compared to monomeric compounds associated with the rigid xylene linker between the two Gd(super III) chelating subunits also contributes to an increased relaxivity.

A thermodynamic study is performed on ligand protonation and complex formation with regard to practical aspects of a safe application of [Fe(tpy-DTTA)2Gd2(H2O)4] as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent. The synthesis and results on the structure and relaxivity of the Ru(super II) containing analogue of the Fe(super II)Gd(sub 3)(super II) complex is reported.

25. Efficacy of Adjunctive Carbamazepine in the Treatment of Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract

Six treatment-resistant schizophrenic patients were given a ten-week single-blind trial of carbamazepine. Treatment resistance was determined on the basis of documented failure to respond to treatment with at least three neuroleptic drugs from two different chemical classes. The adjunctive use of carbamazepine resulted in a significant improvement of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These symptoms are often poorly responsive to conventional antipsychotic drugs. Therefore, controlled studies should be performed to further assess the possible efficacy of carbamazepine in schizophrenia.

Carbamazepine was given to 12 chronic, treatment-refractory schizophrenic patients for 5 weeks. No overall change was found, but four patients significantly improved while eight worsened. Carbamazepine alone or carbamazepine plus neuroleptic was administered to 20 chronic schizophrenic patients. Abstract

AIMS: We assessed the outcome of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with heart failure (HF) compared with patients with other cardiovascular disease and/or risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidaemia). We further wanted to determine the incidence of HF events and its consequences in these patient populations. METHODS AND RESULTS: International retrospective Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure registry for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and CArdioVascular disease and/or risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidaemia) was performed in 28 centres from 15 countries (PCHF-COVICAV). The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. Of 1974 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 1282 had cardiovascular disease and/or risk factors (median age: 72 [interquartile range: 62-81] years, 58% male), with HF being present in 256 [20%] patients. Overall in-hospital mortality was 25% (n = 323/1282 deaths).
