The aim of this work was to test the vectorial competence of Amblyomma tonelliae (Ixodida: Ixodidae) to transmit Rickettsia rickettsii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae), the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). All parasitic stages of A. tonelliae were exposed to R. rickettsii by allowing each stage to feed on hosts inoculated with this pathogen. Thereafter, ticks were fed on uninfected hosts. All stages of A. tonelliae were able to acquire the R. rickettsii infection and maintain it by transstadial and transovarial transmission. When infected ticks fed on uninfected hosts, the hosts developed rickettsiosis disease. This study demonstrates the vectorial competence of A. tonelliae to transmit R. rickettsii. These results have epidemiological relevance because A. tonelliae is one of the tick species most likely to infest humans in Argentina, including in areas in which RMSF has been reported. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in dairy cattle from São Luis Island in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. A total of 281 blood samples were collected. In total, 275 (97.9%) animals were B. bovis-reactive and B. bigemina-reactive in the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The microscopy examination detected 22 (7.8%) animals that were positive for Babesia sp. and the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis showed that 91 animals (32.38%) and 23 animals (8.18%) were positive for B. bovis and B. bigemina, respectively, while 17 animals (6.04%) were co-infected. There is a high level of transmission of these protozoa in Maranhão, and the animals were naturally exposed. Therefore, it is possible to characterize the island as enzootic stability for babesiosis, indicat-ing a risk of financial losses when susceptible animals are introduced from areas of enzootic instability or free regions of B. bovis and B. bigemina. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a capacidade de adesão a células epiteliais humanas e a superfície de poliestireno de leveduras viáveis recuperadas de biofilmes de Candida albicans e Candida glabrata tratados com nanopartículas de prata (NP). Métodos: Biofilmes de Candida (48 hrs) foram formados em placas de microtitulação de 6 poços e tratados por 24 horas com NP (5 nm) nas concentrações de 13,5 e 54 mg/L. Suspensões de células de Candida (107 células viáveis/mL em RPMI 1640) provenientes dos biofilmes tratados com NP foram adicionadas a monocamadas de células HeLa e a poços vazios de placas de microtitulação de 24 poços (para estudar adesão a poliestireno). Após 2 horas de contato, a adesão das leveduras foi determinada usando a coloração com violeta cristal. Resultados: A capacidade de adesão de leveduras viáveis a células HeLa e a superfícies de poliestireno foi significativamente reduzida, e esta redução foi maior quando os biofilmes foram pré-tratados com NP na concentração de 54 mg/L. Ainda, a quantidade de leveduras aderidas das duas cepas diferiu de acordo com o substrato (células epiteliais e superfície de poliestireno). Conclusão: NP podem induzir modificações em leveduras viáveis, as quais podem diminuir a disseminação de infecções por Candida, principalmente em pacientes imunocomprometidos.

Among them, glass cullet is one of the most common silicate wastes and has considerable volume in the cities wastes. A big amount of this waste is recycled by the glass industry but another part is dumped in the cities garbage deposits. In the last few decades there has been considerable research on the reuse of glass waste as aggregate to produce glass-ceramic, for mortars, ceramics and for cement and concrete. This work is concerned to study the reuse of one way glass bottles as aggregate to produce roof tiles (red ceramic). Two kinds of glass powder were prepared by sieving: alpha (0.088 to 0.125 mm) and beta (0.037 to 0.088 mm). Prismatic ceramic bodies (CB) were pressed (60 x 20 x ~5 mm) using a ceramic mass with 0, 5, 8 and 10 % of glass cullet powder added and fired at five different temperatures (800 to 1200 ºC). The results of the technological tests (flexural strength, water absorption, dimensional changes, density and porosity apparent) show that shrinkage increases with the glass content and all other properties above are improved. These changes are more exhibited at temperatures higher than 900°C and in the higher powder glass concentrations (8 e 10%).
