The author investigates the prospects of holistic ethics in the contemporary world. From the standpoint of individual existence observed three modes of ethical attitude towards the world in their historic genesis: home, environment, and common world. The ancient idea of home as a place of love and revelation of God was eroded by the expansion of human civilization on the natural, social, and cosmic scale. This process is reflected in the concept of a multiform environment as a source of material, biological, economic, political, cultural possibilities, and a space of physical, social, and informational (digital) mobility. The crises of those environments put the problem of the proper ethical norms and values for human survival and further development. The ethical dimension of its solution presents the idea of a common world and the relevant ethical principles of advocacy, responsibility, solidarity, justice with the aim of consensus on the basis of a rational discourse where people represent all the other being’s interests. Thus, based on regularly open for better arguments discussion, the author views the possibility of the formation of a cosmos friendly ethics.

The cosmology as described in the creation account in Gen 1:1–2:4a has occasioned endless commentary. One of the more perceptive studies of this text was published by Baruch Halpern in 2003. In this article, I review Halpern’s argument and add evidence from iconography at Ugarit. The Baal Stele (Louvre catalog number AO 15775), in which the deity holds lightning and stands with the king, also displays a cosmology that has intriguing connections with Halpern’s thesis about an “expanse of the earth.” After connecting Halpern’s thesis to this visual representation of cosmology from Ugarit, I explore the ways in which both text and image are mutually illuminating and help to interpret one another, extending the analysis to so-called Deutero-Isaiah and Ps 136 as well.

In the article there is carried out a structural-semantic analysis of Mandelstam’s poem “Tell me, Desert Draftsman…”. Interpretation of a number of mysterious fragments is suggested. In particular, this concerns “Judaic troubles”. We argue that in this context they are connected with the motif of scattering because of the wind activity. We also find interlingual interference between Russian and French. Its meaning is related to the motifs of mutual metamorphosis and inseparability of entities typical of primary chaos. The key feature of the world embodied in the poem consists in the impossibility of unambiguous separation to opposite entities such as creator and destroyer, creation and annihilation, linear and cyclic processes, etc. In this case, no cosmos creates from chaos, the world remains “not embodied”.

Bogor Botanic Gardens is one of the outstanding green areas in Bogor City. Thousands of plant species are growing and providing suitable habitats and feed for various pollinators, such as butterflies, bees, and wasps. A well-designed pollination garden will benefit the pollinators and also create an educational facility for the community. This study aimed to select and characterize species of flowering plants that effectively attract pollinators, particularly Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, in the pollination garden candidate area. The observa-tion had been carried out on 12 ornamental plant species: Pennisetum purpureum, Cosmos sp., Pachystachys lutea, Cuphea hyssopifolia, Orthosiphon aristatus, Lantana camara, Citrus aurantifolia, Buddleja davidii, Ixora javanica, Nerium oleander, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, and Aglaia odorata. The method for observing pollinators was a standard walking method. Pollinator photos, its number, its visit time, and the plants it visited were recorded. A total of 23 species of Lepidoptera (20 species from 4 families and 3 species were unidentified) and 9 species of Hymenoptera (4 families) were found in the area with the best obser-vation time at 08.30-09.30 (GMT+7). The most visited plants by pollinators were Cuphea hyssopifolia, Lantana camara and Orthosiphon aristatus. Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera preferred blue-purple and bright-orange-yellow flowers. In addition, the flower characters that might influence pollinator visits are also described. The result would be an essential recommendation for plant selection, landscape design, and construction of the pollination garden in Bogor Botanic Gardens.

Conventional methods to remove heavy metals from polluted water are expensive and not environmentally friendly. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the potential of agricultural waste such as pineapple peel (Ananas Cosmos) as low-cost absorbent to remove heavy metals from synthetic polluted water. The results showed that Cd, Cr and Pb were effectively removed by the biosorbent at 12g of pineapple peels in 100 mL solution. The optimum contact time for maximum adsorption was found to be 90 minutes, while the optimum pH for the heavy metal’s adsorption was 9. It was demonstrated that with the increase of adsorbent dosage, the percent of heavy metals removal was also increased due to the increasing adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. In addition, Langmuir model show maximum adsorption capacity of Cd is 1.91 mg/g. As conclusions, our findings show that pineapple peel has potential to remove heavy metal from polluted water.

The purpose of this study was batch scale elimination of Cosmos Red dye from aqueous medium by low cost and environmentally friendly adsorbents. To study the dye removing capacity, leaves of Raphinus sativus (radish) and peels of Citrus sinensis (orange) were utilized. Two adsorption isotherms were studied to explain adsorption equilibrium. The Langmuir isotherm is compatible to adsorption data. Best adsorption capacities for Raphinus sativus and Citrus sinensis were: 3.437 mg/g and 5.844 mg/g correspondingly. Citrus sinensis peels showed more adsorption. The negative values of thermodynamic parameters ∆Go for both adsorbents have shown the feasibility of this process. The results had shown that for removal of Cosmos Red dye, Citrus sinensis (orange) peels are more efficient adsorbent as compared to Raphinus sativus leaves.

To prolong their vase life, cut flowers are commonly kept in holding solutions. These must include a biocide to retard bacterial growth. In this study, the effect of nanosilver (NS) on certain aspects of senescence in cut garden cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) flowers was compared to that of the commonly used 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC). In combination with sucrose, both biocides prolonged cosmos vase life but did not prevent the occurrence of stem blockages. NS was more effective in limiting a reduction in endogenous soluble carbohydrates. The malondialdehyde (MDA) contents increased in senescing ray florets, both in intact and control cut flowers held in water. Both biocides were comparably effective in limiting this effect. The hydrogen peroxide content tripled in intact flowers but dropped in flowers held in water or the 8-HQC solutions; in flowers kept in NS solutions its increase was moderate. Also, the catalase activity increased in intact flowers but dropped in all cut flowers. Both biocides had similar effects on the enzyme activity, in both pure solutions and with sucrose. Most of these parameters were not significantly correlated with vase life. Overall, the effect of nanosilver on senescence in cut cosmos flowers was similar to that of 8-HQC.

The study analyses the semantics of ornaments of Bukovinian embroideries samples collected by E. Kolbenhier during the period from 1902 to 1912. Resulting from the concept of the proto-myth offered by the author, it is proved that the ornamental symbols hid images of the archaic goddess identical with the Cosmos. The study shows that the ornamental image of a flower is constructed from “female” symbols (in particular, rhombuses) arranged according to structures 1+1+1 or 1+2+1 which model the goddess. It is shown that the image of the goddess (one, two or three goddesses) is as well hidden behind ornamental structures of a tree. The article analyses ornaments that model volumetric Space as the structure formed from concentric rectangles symbolizing a dungeon, the terrestrial world and heavens. It is shown that this structure models an ornament placed on the Stone-Age pots. Studying the semantics of the S-symbol, it is argued that it can denote summer or winter half-cycles of the Sun, which the goddess embodied in archaic symbolism. Accordingly, it was concluded that the ornamental “endlessness” consisting of S-symbols and simulating the cycles of the sun transmits temporary infinity.

Cosmos sulphureus Cav. Known as a horticultural plant that has many benefits. Several studies reported its benefits as a vegetable plant, natural coloring, biopesticide, apiary, therapeutic plant, and ornamental plants. Research on its function as a landscape plant is still rarely studied. Though this plant has a characteristic of growth that is different from other types of cosmos/kenikir. This study aims to assess the appearance of leaves and canopy of C. sulphureus plants as landscape plant in organic and inorganic fertilizing. The analytical methods used in this study were chi-square, Kendall's W test, scenic beauty estimation, semantic differential, and paired comparison. The results shows fertilized of C. sulphureus leaf and canopy appearance significantly differ than not fertilized C. sulphureus. Fertilization with organic fertilizer shows the preferred results by 36 respondents because it has impression of height on its appearance.

Der Aufgang und die Wirkungsgeschichte der Weltfrage in der neueren philosophie werden in diesem Artikel mit dem Niedergang der metaphysischen Seinsfrage und mit der nihilistischen Krise der Vernunft in Zusammenhang gebracht. Diese Krise des Logos hat ihre Manifestationen vor allem in der Vorherrschaft des wissenschaftlichen positivismus und in der Vormachtstellung der weltanschaulichen Ideologien gefunden. Im Fokus der Betrachtung befinden sich philosophische Strömungen der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Kroatien. Die Darstellung verfolgt vor allem die denkerische Anziehungskraft und gedankliche einflussnahme des brisanten Themas auf die Herausbildung der pluralistischen Ideenwelt und die erfolgte demokratische Wende. Sie geht von der Frage aus, inwiefern die philosophischen Reflexionen über den Weltbegriff mit der Öffnung der freiheitlich-demokratischen Vorgänge in der Gesellschaft korrespondierten. Die erforschung der Welt hat sich in verschiedenen philosophischen Strömungen als ein dialogischer und vielperspektivischer Rahmen erwiesen. er lieferte ganz unterschiedlichen und sogar entgegengesetzten theoretischen Betrachtungsweisen und philosophischen Ausrichtungen den Ansatz zur erschließung der Deliberation und Auseinandersetzung über die gemeinsamen Bestrebungen. Durch eine umrisshafte philosophiegeschichtliche Darstellung herausragender Weltbegründungsentwürfe werden gedankliche erträge und die dazugehörenden Veröffentlichungen in drei erkennbaren Hauptwellen von 1953 bis 1962, von 1964 bis 1984 und zuletzt von 1986 bis 1995 ins Licht gerückt. Die begrifflichen Leistungen werden in fünf philosophische Richtungen gegliedert: phänomenologisch-axiologische Weltbildung, phä- nomenologisch-hermeneutische Auslegung der Welt, praxis-marxistische Weltbegründung, wissenschaftlich-analytische Weltkonstruktion und universalistisch-integrative philosophie der Welt. Die nähere Betrachtung der grundlegenden Thesen bestätigt die einsicht, dass der „Weltbegriff als Grundbegriff der neuen epoche“ (Marija Selak, 2013, 188) bezeichnet werden könne. Die Weltfrage ist also ein philosophisches Grundthema, an dem sich die Geister begegneten und schieden, versammelten und auseinandergingen, Dialoge führten und sich zerstritten, in dessen Rahmen sich der geistige Horizont in seiner Vielfältigkeit zu integrieren vermochte. Diese Frage regte mannigfache Überlegungen und viele Gespräche an, die für die Suche nach mehr pluralität und eindeutiger Vielperspektivität in der Naturbetrachtung und der Lebensbeschreibung wie in der politischen Wirklichkeit, also in der Forderung nach mehr Freiheit, Ordnung und Logos im geistigen Universum, fruchtbar waren. Die Weltfrage scheint daher in der Gegenwart eine zündende Deliberationswirkung behalten zu haben, mit der sie weitere philosophische Forschungsmissionen anspornen und neue Denkabenteuer in der Zukunft anstoßen könnte.

Mexico ranks fourth worldwide for its number of species of vascular plants; however, insufficient area has been marked for conservation as Protected Natural Areas (PNAs); 176 PNAs represent 12% of the total surface and encompass only a small portion of the Mexican endemic species. Strategies for setting up conservation zones are often based on identifying biodiversity hotspots to preserve the maximum number of species with the most efficient use of funds. Here we used the richness analysis by grid method based on herbarium specimens to locate zones with a high richness of Cosmos taxa (species and their varieties). Because this approach can lead to omission error, we also obtained an Ecological Niche Model (ENM) for each Cosmos taxon to perform a richness analysis by grid and locate sites with suitable conditions for supporting the most Cosmos taxa. We conducted a panbiogeographic analysis to locate biogeographical nodes, sites of great geobiotic complexity. Western Mexico was thus identified as the highest priority for Cosmos conservation; it has the greatest richness and most suitable conditions for Cosmos and has great biotic complexity. Although one of the largest Mexican PNAs is located in this region, some species with restricted distribution do not occur within this Protected Natural Area (PNA); therefore, a southwest extension of this PNA is proposed.

Christmas is a celebration with a strong social radiance. It is a vehicle for political positions and debates and thus shows itself to be a controversial cosmos of significance. A cosmos with history that is not as old as is often claimed – the origin of the festival as we know it today lies in the 19th century. Since then, Christmas has developed into a global festival in which many different people take part. But Christmas is not only unifying, it is also exclusive and creates cultural differences. The aim of the text is to look at the festival in its historical genesis and to critically illuminate Christmas as an ambivalent social phenomenon.

As the Church participates in God’s Mission, how is it called to oppose evil forces in the world? In the last fifty years, spiritual warfare approaches have come to the attention of evangelicals through missionary encounters with spirit cosmologies of the global South and the rise of Pentecostalism within World Christianity. But Janet Warren’s book, Cleansing the Cosmos (Wipf and Stock, 2012), offers a theological and practical alternative to spiritual warfare, one that emphasizes God’s cleansing of space in his creation, with evil not so much a strategic enemy but chaos that seeks to intrude over God-given boundaries and contaminate what God has made holy. This article analyzes Warren’s proposal and explores how it may help in some areas of mission where spiritual warfare approaches have been problematic – namely in relation to exaggerated God–Satan dualism, discontinuity of local religious forms, and controversies over space.

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) intercropping with floricultural cadmium (Cd) accumulator plants (Helianthus annuus L., Cosmos sulphureus Cav., Cosmos bipinnata Cav., and Impatiens balsamina L.) in Cd-contaminated soils (5 mg/kg) was conducted in pot experiment to screen the floricultural Cd-accumulator plants that can effectively reduce Cd uptake in grapevine. Intercropping with H. annuus, C. sulphureus, and I. balsamina decreased the biomass of grape plants compared with that of the grape monoculture, whereas intercropping with C. bipinnata did not show differences in grape plant biomass both as compared to monoculture in Cd-contaminated soils and to control plants, grown in the same soil without Cd spiking. The superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, as well as soluble protein content, were increased by intercropping with C. bipinnata compared with the grape monoculture, but were decreased by the other intercropping treatments. In general, intercropping with the four floricultural Cd-accumulator plants decreased the Cd content in grape plants compared with the monoculture, and the Cd content in grapevine for the different treatments was as follows: monoculture > intercropped with I. balsamina > intercropped with C. bipinnata > intercropped with H. annuus > intercropped with C. sulphureus. As for the amount of Cd accumulated by shoots of the floricultural plants, the ranking was as follows: I. balsamina > C. sulphureus > H. annuus > C. bipinnata. Therefore, intercropping with floricultural Cd-accumulator plants could effectively decrease Cd accumulation in grape plants, and intercropping with C. sulphureus gave the best results in this study.

The chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus Sherff) is an ornamental species endemic from Mexico, which has the capacity to produce tuberous roots. The species is reported almost extinct from its natural environment. In 2015, a wild population of chocolate cosmos was collected. In order to study the in vitro morphogenetic response in this species, five wild clones and a cultivated one were evaluated. Nodal and leaf segments were established to obtain callus in two clones. For direct organogenesis, nodal segments of the five wild clones were used. In a cultivated and a wild clone, the response to the photoperiod and its effect on multiplication, in addition to the effect of sucrose and photoperiod on rooting, were evaluated. The response to phloroglucinol during rooting in the cultivated clone was also assessed. The results show that the response to callus formation with 2,4-D was observed in only 50% of leaf segments. The best BA response was in nodal segments with 100% callus formation. In the direct organogenesis stage, the effect of BA was different for all the clones, originating from one to 12.6 shoots. No clear effect was observed in the photoperiods tested. Phloroglucinol doubled the root number per shoot from 11.1 to 24.2. Root length decreased as sucrose concentration increased. It is concluded that all the clones evaluated showed different responses during in vitro morphogenesis and that specific protocols are needed for their efficient micropropagation.

A plant breeding program has been developed with chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus Sherff.), that is an endemic plant from Mexico. It is a perennial tuberous root plant with a peculiar chocolate fragrance in the flowers. This plant is extinct from its natural habitat, in addition this plant does not produce seed due to its self-incompatibility, so that worldwide there is only one cultivated clon from which patents have been obtained and used as garden plants in Europe. So the objective of this work was to make manual crosses between chocolate cosmos and Cosmos purpureus to produce hybrids that can be registered and commercialized in Mexico. The hybrid seeds obtained generated 50% plants with flower color character similar to the male parent while the other 50% alike to the female. For the leaf shape character, 100% of the hybrids plants presented leaves similar to the male parent. Only 15% of the hybrids presented scarce essence to chocolate. This study shows that it is possible to carry out genetic exchange between these two species, to generate a variety with the best morphological attributes of both species.

This project objective evaluated the potential of improving linked weather-and-mobility model predictions by blending soil moisture observations from a Cosmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS) sensor with weather-informed predictions of soil moisture and soil strength from the Geospatial Weather-Affected Terrain Conditions and Hazards (GeoWATCH). Assimilating vehicle-borne COSMOS observations that measure local effects model predictions of soil moisture offered potential to produce more accurate soil strength and vehicle mobility forecast was the hypothesis. This project compared soil moisture observations from a COSMOS mobile sensor driven around an area near Iowa Falls, IA, with both GeoWATCH soil moisture predictions and in situ probe observations. The evaluation of the COSMOS rover data finds that the soil moisture measurements contain a low measurement bias while the GeoWATCH estimates more closely matched the in situ data. The COSMOS rover captured a larger dynamic range of soil moisture conditions as compared to GeoWATCH, capturing both very wet and very dry soil conditions, which may better flag areas of high risk for mobility considerations. Overall, more study of the COSMOS rover is needed to better understand sensor performance in a variety of soil conditions to determine the feasibility of assimilating the COSMOS rover estimates into GeoWATCH.

On one level confessional distinction began to define material culture in the first decades of the seventeenth century, but a microhistorical approach reveals the persistence of plural devotional practices and beliefs. A close reading of the 1635 inventory of a court clockmaker, Kúndrat Šteffenaúr, reveals the complex intersections of confessions in Central Europe. It indicates an environment in which a wide range of devotional options were available. Analysis of Kúndrat’s possessions as individual items, and how they were kept together, shows the need to think across and beyond confessional boundaries of Protestant versus Catholic in order to understand lay religious beliefs and practices at this historical moment of confessional rupture. This chapter examines the inventory from two perspectives: first, it surveys the confessional spectrum of objects—Protestant books, Catholic devotional jewellery, clocks, and charms—contextualizing them and exploring why they may have come into Kúndrat’s possession; second, it offers an interpretation of the objects as items that formed Kúndrat’s individual cosmos, as ‘fragmented religion’.

Early modern Prague is best known through snapshot glimpses as the setting for the escapades of the English alchemist John Dee, Rudolf II’s exotic Kunstkammer, or the famous defenestration of Catholic councillors that sparked the Thirty Years’ War that ravaged Europe between 1618 and 1648. No continuous treatment of its social and cultural history across the seventeenth century exists. Moreover, Prague is often viewed through refracted categories: as a court city, a city of four administratively independent towns, a city of reform and protest prior to 1620, or a city of Baroque Catholic ascendancy after 1620. While delineating the social, cultural, and religious topography of Prague over a century, this profile presents a different perspective of a city that enabled a web of encounters between people of different social strata, faiths, and occupations, and fostered its own urban cosmos.

COSMOS offers the opportunity to record Greek mythology, both in its written and visual forms.
