This study presents the role of 5d orbitals in the bonding, and electronic and magnetic structure of Ce imido and oxo complexes synthesized with a tris(hydroxylaminato) [((2- t BuNO)C6H4CH2)3N]3- (TriNO x 3-) ligand framework, including the reported synthesis and characterization of two new alkali metal-capped Ce oxo species. X-ray spectroscopy measurements reveal that the imido and oxo materials exhibit an intermediate valent ground state of the Ce, displaying hallmark features in the Ce LIII absorption of partial f-orbital occupancy that are relatively constant for all measured compounds. These spectra feature a double peak consistent with other formal Ce(iv) compounds. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal enhanced levels of temperature-independent paramagnetism (TIP). In contrast to systems with direct bonding to an aromatic ligand, no clear correlation between the level of TIP and f-orbital occupancy is observed. CASSCF calculations defy a conventional van Vleck explanation of the TIP, indicating a single-reference ground state with no low-lying triplet excited state, despite accurately predicting the measured values of f-orbital occupancy. The calculations do, however, predict strong 4f/5d hybridization. In fact, within these complexes, despite having similar f-orbital occupancies and therefore levels of 4f/5d hybridization, the d-state distributions vary depending on the bonding motif (Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]O vs. Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]N) of the complex, and can also be fine-tuned based on varying alkali metal cation capping species. This system therefore provides a platform for understanding the characteristic nature of Ce multiple bonds and potential impact that the associated d-state distribution may have on resulting reactivity.

The transplutonium elements (atomic numbers 95-103) are a group of metals that lie at the edge of the periodic table. As a result, the patterns and trends used to predict and control the physics and chemistry for transition metals, main-group elements and lanthanides are less applicable to transplutonium elements. Furthermore, understanding the properties of these heavy elements has been restricted by their scarcity and radioactivity. This is especially true for einsteinium (Es), the heaviest element on the periodic table that can currently be generated in quantities sufficient to enable classical macroscale studies1. Here we characterize a coordination complex of einsteinium, using less than 200 nanograms of 254Es (with half-life of 275.7(5) days), with an organic hydroxypyridinone-based chelating ligand. X-ray absorption spectroscopic and structural studies are used to determine the energy of the L3-edge and a bond distance of einsteinium. Photophysical measurements show antenna sensitization of EsIII luminescence; they also reveal a hypsochromic shift on metal complexation, which had not previously been observed in lower-atomic-number actinide elements. These findings are indicative of an intermediate spin-orbit coupling scheme in which j-j coupling (whereby single-electron orbital angular momentum and spin are first coupled to form a total angular momentum, j) prevails over Russell-Saunders coupling. Together with previous actinide complexation studies2, our results highlight the need to continue studying the unusual behaviour of the actinide elements, especially those that are scarce and short-lived.

A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate–amide complexes, {[(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2]xCeIV[N(SiMe3)2]3−x}+ (x = 0–3), was prepared by chemical oxidation of the corresponding cerium(iii) complexes, where x = 1 and 2 represent novel complexes. The Ce(iv) complexes exhibited a range of intense colors, including red, black, cyan, and green. Notably, increasing the number of the guanidinate ligands from zero to three resulted in significant redshift of the absorption bands from 503 nm (2.48 eV) to 785 nm (1.58 eV) in THF. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra indicated increasing f occupancy (nf) with more guanidinate ligands, and revealed the multiconfigurational ground states for all Ce(iv) complexes. Cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated less stabilization of the Ce(iv) oxidation state with more guanidinate ligands. Moreover, the Ce(iv) tris(guanidinate) complex exhibited temperature independent paramagnetism (TIP) arising from the small energy gap between the ground- and excited states with considerable magnetic moments. Computational analysis suggested that the origin of the low energy absorption bands was a charge transfer between guanidinate π orbitals that were close in energy to the unoccupied Ce 4f orbitals. However, the incorporation of sterically hindered guanidinate ligands inhibited optimal overlaps between Ce 5d and ligand N 2p orbitals. As a result, there was an overall decrease of ligand-to-metal donation and a less stabilized Ce(iv) oxidation state, while at the same time, more of the donated electron density ended up in the 4f shell. The results indicate that incorporating guanidinate ligands into Ce(iv) complexes gives rise to intense charge transfer bands and noteworthy electronic structures, providing insights into the stabilization of tetravalent lanthanide oxidation states., A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate-amide complexes, {[(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2]xCeIV[N(SiMe3)2]3−x}+ (x = 0−3), was prepared by chemical oxidation and studied spectroscopically and computationally, revealing trends in 4f/5d orbital occupancies.

5f covalency in [U(C7H7)2]− was probed with carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electronic structure theory. The results are compared with earlier studies which show that the extent of δ-orbital mixing in [U(C7H7)2]1− is larger than reported previously for U(C8H8)2.

The coordination chemistry of glutarimide-dioxime (H3A) has been studied related to applications in uranyl sequestration from seawater and for the stabilization of early transition metals in high oxidation states. We report here that the H2A− anion is also suitable for stabilizing Ce(IV) and acts as a tridentate ligand to form the [Ce(H2A)3]+ cation. The metal complexes [Ce(H2A)3]Cl and [Ce(H2A)3][BPh4] have been obtained by oxidation of CeIII in the presence of H3A under aerobic conditions. UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT calculations were performed to characterize the electronic structure and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) bands of [CeIV(H2A)3]+. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was also performed to verify the Ce(IV) oxidation state. Absent a clear electrochemical signal for cerium reduction in [Ce(H2A)3]Cl or [Ce(H2A)3][BPh4] under a range of conditions, DFT calculations predicted a Ce(III/IV) redox couple of −1.22 V vs. Fc/Fc+. These results further expand the coordination chemistry of glutarimide-dioxime to tetravalent cerium.

Significant orbital mixing is rare in lanthanide complexes because of the limited radial extent of the 4f orbitals, which results in a generally small stabilization due to 4f orbital interactions. Nevertheless, even a small amount of additional stabilization could enhance lanthanide separations. One lanthanide complex in which orbital mixing has been extensively studied both experimentally and computationally is cerocene, COT2Ce, where COT is cyclooctatetraene. This compound has a singlet ground state with a low-lying, triplet excited state. Previous fluorescence studies on trimethylsilyl-substituted cerocenes indicate the triplet state is 0.4 eV higher in energy than the singlet state. In addition, computational studies predict that the triplet is 0.3 to 1 eV higher in energy than the singlet. The synthesis of highly pure COT2Ce by Walter and Andersen allowed its physical properties to be accurately measured. Using these measurements, we evaluate the stabilization of the 4f orbitals using two, independent approaches. A Hubbard model is used to evaluate the stabilization of the ground state due to orbital mixing. This stabilization, which is also the singlet-triplet gap, is -0.29 eV using this model. This gap was also from the temperature independent paramagnetism of COT2Ce, which yielded a value of -0.32 eV.

We report the structural properties of ultra-small ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles (NPs), which were synthesized without strong binding surface ligands by employing a covalent organic framework (COF-5) as an inert template. The resultant NPs were used to observe how structural properties are affected by decreasing grain size within bulk actinide oxides, which has implications for understanding the behavior of nuclear fuel materials. Through a comprehensive characterization strategy, we gain insight regarding how structure at the NP surface differs from the interior. Characterization using electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that growth of the ThO2 and UO2 NPs was confined by the pores of the COF template, resulting in sub-3 nm particles. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy results indicate that the NPs are best described as ThO2 and UO2 materials with unpassivated surfaces. The surface layers of these particles compensate for high surface energy by exhibiting a broader distribution of Th–O and U–O bond distances despite retaining average bond lengths that are characteristic of bulk ThO2 and UO2. The combined synthesis and physical characterization efforts provide a detailed picture of actinide oxide structure at the nanoscale, which remains highly underexplored compared to transition metal counterparts., ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles synthesized using a COF-5 template exhibit unpassivated surfaces and provide insight into nanoscale properties of actinides.

A new binary compound, NpSe2, possesses metal-chalcogen and chalcogen-chalcogen interactions different from those reported for other metal dichalcogenides. Its structure is incommensurately modulated and features linear Se chains and valence-ambiguous Np cations.

International audience; An alternative synthesis for M(κ2-bipy)4 (M = La, Ce) and [Li(thf)4][M(κ2-bipy)4] (M = Tb, Dy) and the crystal structures for M = La, Ce, and Tb are described. The isomorphous and isostructural neutral molecules, M = La and Ce, are polymeric in the solid-state, as are those of M = Sm and Eu, which were reported in earlier work. The polymeric network is built from eight coordinate units whose geometry in all four cases is that of a square prism. The known molecules, M = Yb and Lu, are also polymeric, but the eight coordinate units have dodecahedral geometries. The structure of the anions in the separated ion pair, [Li(thf)4][M(κ2-bipy)4], in which Tb is reported in this work and Lu is known, are monomeric with geometries that are between that of a square antiprism and a dodecahdron. The electronic structure, from CASSCF multireference quantum mechanical calculations, shows that the electronic ground states for M = La and Lu are multiconfigurational spin doublets and those for the M = Ce and Yb are multiconfigurational spin triplets. This is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility studies as a function of temperature that are consistent with the metals (La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Dy, Yb, and Lu) being trivalent, as are the LIII-edge XANES spectra (Ce, Yb), and divalent for Eu. The multiconfigurational nature of the ground states, developed from CASSCF molecular orbital calculations, renders a single Lewis structure and a single reference molecular orbital representation misleading. The results from the multireference calculations are extended to the other lanthanide molecules and are the genesis of a new model for understanding the magnetic properties of these molecules.

The separation of trivalent lanthanides and actinides is challenging because of their similar sizes and charge densities. S-donating extractants have shown significant selectivity for trivalent actinides over lanthanides, with single-stage americium/lanthanide separation efficiencies for some thiol-based extractants reported at >99.999%. While such separations could transform the nuclear waste management landscape, these systems are often limited by the hydrolytic and radiolytic stability of the extractant. Progress away from thiol-based systems is limited by the poorly understood and complex interactions of these extractants in organic phases, where molecular aggregation and micelle formation obfuscates assessment of the metal-extractant coordination environment. Because S-donating thioethers are generally more resistant to hydrolysis and oxidation and the aqueous phase coordination chemistry is anticipated to lack complications brought on by micelle formation, we have considered three thioethers, 2,2'-thiodiacetic acid (TDA), (2R,5S)-tetrahydrothiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TPA), as possible trivalent actinide selective reagents. Formation constants, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and computational studies were completed for thioether complexes with a variety of trivalent lanthanides and actinides including Nd, Eu, Tb, Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf. TPA was found to have moderately higher selectivity for the actinides because of its ability to bind actinides in a different manner than lanthanides, but the utility of TPA is limited by poor water solubility and high rigidity. While significant competition with water for the metal center limits the efficacy of aqueous-based thioethers for separations, the characterization of these solution-phase, S-containing lanthanide and actinide complexes is the most comprehensively available in the literature to date. This is due to the breadth of lanthanides and actinides considered as well as the techniques deployed and serves as a platform for the further development of S-containing reagents for actinide separations. Additionally, this paper reports on the first bond lengths for Cf and Bk with a neutral S donor.

Uranium nitride complexes are attractive targets for chemists as molecular models for the bonding, reactivity, and magnetic properties of next-generation nuclear fuels, but these molecules are uncommon and can be difficult to isolate due to their high reactivity. Here, we describe the synthesis of three new multinuclear uranium nitride complexes, [U(BCMA)2]2(μ-N)(μ-κ1:κ1-BCMA) (7), [(U(BIMA)2)2(μ-N)(μ-NiPr)(K2(μ-η3:η3-CH2CHNiPr)]2 (8), and [U(BIMA)2]2(μ-N)(μ-κ1:κ1-BIMA) (9) (BCMA = N,N-bis(cyclohexyl)methylamidinate, BIMA = N,N-bis(iso-propyl)methylamidinate), from U(III) and U(IV) amidinate precursors. By varying the amidinate ligand substituents and azide source, we were able to influence the composition and size of these nitride complexes. 15N isotopic labeling experiments confirmed the bridging nitride moieties in 7-9 were formed via two-electron reduction of azide. The tetra-uranium cluster 8 was isolated in 99% yield via reductive cleavage of the amidinate ligands; this unusual molecule contains nitrogen-based ligands with formal 1-, 2-, and 3- charges. Additionally, chemical oxidation of the U(IV) precursor U(N3)(BCMA)3 yielded the cationic U(V) species [U(N3)(BCMA)3][OTf]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed a U(IV) oxidation state for the uranium centers in the three nitride-bridged complexes and provided a comparison of magnetic behavior in the structurally related U(III)-U(IV)-U(V) series U(BCMA)3, U(N3)(BCMA)3, and [U(N3)(BCMA)3][OTf]. At 240 K, the magnetic moments in this series decreased with increasing oxidation state, i.e., U(III) > U(IV) > U(V); this trend follows the decreasing number of 5f valence electrons along this series.

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm3+ , Eu3+ , Tb3+ , Dy3+ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm3+ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

The solution-state interactions between octadentate hydroxypyridinone (HOPO) and catecholamide (CAM) chelating ligands and uranium were investigated and characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), as well as electrochemically via spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Depending on the selected chelator, we demonstrate the controlled ability to bind and stabilize UIV, generating with 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO), a tetravalent uranium complex that is practically inert toward oxidation or hydrolysis in acidic, aqueous solution. At physiological pH values, we are also able to bind and stabilize UIV to a lesser extent, as evidenced by the mix of UIV and UVI complexes observed via XAS. CV and SEC measurements confirmed that the UIV complex formed with 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) is redox inert in acidic media, and UVI ions can be reduced, likely proceeding via a two-electron reduction process.

${\mathrm{Yb}}_{14}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{11}$ is a magnetic Zintl compound as well as being one of the best high temperature $p$-type thermoelectric materials. According to the Zintl formalism, which defines intermetallic phases where cations and anions are valence satisfied, this structure type is nominally made up of 14 ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{2+}$, 1 ${\mathrm{MnSb}}_{4}^{9\ensuremath{-}}$, 1 ${\mathrm{Sb}}_{3}^{7\ensuremath{-}}$, and 4 ${\mathrm{Sb}}^{3\ensuremath{-}}$ atoms. When Mn is replaced by Mg or Zn, the Zintl defined motifs become 13 ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{2+}$, 1 ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$, 1 (Mg, Zn)${\mathrm{Sb}}_{4}^{10\ensuremath{-}}$, 1 ${\mathrm{Sb}}_{3}^{7\ensuremath{-}}$, and 4 ${\mathrm{Sb}}^{3\ensuremath{-}}$. The predicted existence of ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ based on simple electron counting rules of the Zintl formalism calls the Yb valence of these compounds into question. X-ray absorption near-edge structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystals of the three analogs show signatures of intermediate valence Yb behavior and in particular, reveal the heavy fermion nature of ${\mathrm{Yb}}_{14}{\mathrm{MgSb}}_{11}$. In these isostructural compounds, Yb can exhibit a variety of electronic configurations from intermediate ($M=\mathrm{Zn}$), mostly 2+ ($M=\mathrm{Mn}$), to 3+ ($M=\mathrm{Mg}$). In all cases, there is a small amount of intermediate valency at the lowest temperatures. The amount of intermediate valency is constant for $M=\mathrm{Mn}$, Mg and temperature dependent for $M=\mathrm{Zn}$. The evolution of the Yb valence correlated to the transport properties of these phases is highlighted. The presence of Yb in this structure type allows for fine tuning of the carrier concentration and thereby the possibility of optimized thermoelectric properties along with unique magnetic phenomena.

X-ray absorption measurements at the U ${L}_{\mathrm{III}}$, Ru $K$, and Fe $K$ edges are reported for the hidden order (HO) material ${\mathrm{URu}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{x}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ ($x=0$, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.20) as a function of $x$ and temperature $T$. When Fe is substituted for Ru, the local structure about Fe shrinks slightly and the first neighbor Fe-Si bond length decreases by $\ensuremath{\approx}0.05\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\AA{}$. More importantly excess disorder is observed below 80--100 K (the coherence temperature ${T}^{*}$) in plots of the Debye-Waller factor ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{2}$ ($\ensuremath{\sigma}$ is the width of the pair distribution function); at low $T$ the data deviate from the usual Einstein or correlated-Debye model plots. This excess disorder is most prominent for the Ru-Si bond, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{2}$ actually increases below 80 K. These results suggest a local orthorhombic distortion with ${B}_{1g}$-like symmetry that develops below 80--100 K. A model that describes these local distortions is presented, and discussed in terms of other measurements that indicate a breaking of fourfold symmetry at low $T$. In addition, the square root of the difference between ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{2}(T)$ for the Ru-Si pair and a Debye fit to these data serves as an order parameter for this orthorhombic distortion, in the temperature range below 100 K. This quantity is a length related to $a\text{\ensuremath{-}}b$, the difference between the $a$ and $b$ lattice constants in the orthorhombic phase, and provides a connection between this distortion and ${T}^{*}$. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements also show that there are no changes in the edge positions down to 0.1 eV for any edge as a function of $x$, for $T$ in the HO regime.

We describe the functionalisation of the previously reported uranium(III) β-diketiminate complex (BDI)UI2(THF)2 (1) with one and two equivalents of a sterically demanding 2,6-diisopropylphenolate ligand (ODipp) leading to the formation of two heteroleptic complexes: [(BDI)UI(ODipp)]2 (2) and (BDI)U(ODipp)2 (3). The latter is a rare example of a tetrahedral uranium(III) complex, and it shows single-molecule magnet behaviour.

Previous magnetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of cerocene, Ce(C8H8)2, have provided evidence for non-negligible 4f-electron density on Ce and implied that charge transfer from the ligands occurs as a result of covalent bonding. Strong correlations of the localized 4f-electrons to the delocalized ligand π-system result in emergence of Kondo-like behavior and other quantum chemical phenomena that are rarely observed in molecular systems. In this study, Ce(C8H8)2 is analyzed experimentally using carbon K-edge and cerium M5,4-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XAS), and computationally using configuration interaction (CI) calculations and density functional theory (DFT) as well as time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). Both spectroscopic approaches provide strong evidence for ligand → metal electron transfer as a result of Ce 4f and 5d mixing with the occupied C 2p orbitals of the C8H82− ligands. Specifically, the Ce M5,4-edge XAS and CI calculations show that the contribution of the 4f1, or Ce3+, configuration to the ground state of Ce(C8H8)2 is similar to strongly correlated materials such as CeRh3 and significantly larger than observed for other formally Ce4+ compounds including CeO2 and CeCl62−. Pre-edge features in the experimental and TDDFT-simulated C K-edge XAS provide unequivocal evidence for C 2p and Ce 4f covalent orbital mixing in the δ-antibonding orbitals of e2u symmetry, which are the unoccupied counterparts to the occupied, ligand-based δ-bonding e2u orbitals. The C K-edge peak intensities, which can be compared directly to the C 2p and Ce 4f orbital mixing coefficients determined by DFT, show that covalency in Ce(C8H8)2 is comparable in magnitude to values reported previously for U(C8H8)2. An intuitive model is presented to show how similar covalent contributions to the ground state can have different impacts on the overall stability of f-element metallocenes., Unequivocal experimental evidence for carbon 2p and cerium 4f orbital mixing in cerocene, Ce(C8H8)2 is provided from carbon K-edge and Ce M5,4-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies and corroborated with DFT and configuration interaction calculations.

Rare examples of molecular, dinuclear CeIII and PrIII complexes with robust Ln-coordination are accessible by use of the tetraphenolate pTP as a supporting, chelating O-donor ligand platform, pTP = [{2-(OC6H2R2-2,4)2CH}-C6H4-1,4]4− that favours the higher formal oxidation states accessible to rare earths. Two classes of complexes have been made from the platforms; one metallacyclic 2 + 2 [Ln2(pTP)2] framework with a rigid, letterbox-shaped geometry and [Ln(aryloxide)4] core, and one more flexible [(LnX)2(pTP)] with one rare earth ion at either end of the platform. The LnIII letterbox complexes have two K+ counter-cations, one of which sits inside the letterbox, binding the two central arenes of the platform sufficiently strongly that it cannot be displaced by solvent molecules (THF and pyridine) or crown ethers. Oxidation of the CeIII lettterboxes is facile and forms the unusual neutral molecular (CeIV)2 letterbox in which the CeIV reduction potential is −1.83 V vs. Fc/Fc+. Octadentate hydroxypyridinone (HOPO) and catecholamide (CAM) siderophore analogues are known to be efficacious chelators of the actinide cations, and these ligands are also capable of facilitating both activation and reduction of actinyl species. Utilizing X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry measurements, herein, we elucidate chelation-based mechanisms for driving reactivity and initiating redox processes in a family of neptunyl-HOPO and CAM complexes. Based on the selected chelator, the ability to control the oxidation state of neptunium and the speed of reduction and concurrent oxo group activation was demonstrated. Most notably, reduction kinetics for the NpV O2 +/ /NpIV redox couple upon chelation by the ligands 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) and 3,4,3-LI(CAM)2 (1,2-HOPO)2 was observed to be faster than ever reported, and in fact quicker than we could measure using either X-ray absorption spectroscopy or electrochemical techniques.

The chemistry of trivalent transplutonium ions (Am3+ , Cm3+ , Bk3+ , Cf3+ , Es3+ …) is usually perceived as monotonic and paralleling that of the trivalent lanthanide series. Herein, we present the first extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) study performed on a series of aqueous heavy actinide chelates, extending past Cm. The results obtained on diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) complexes of trivalent Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf show a break to much shorter metal-oxygen nearest-neighbor bond lengths in the case of Cf3+ . Corroborating those results, density functional theory calculations, extended to Es3+ , suggest that the shorter Cf-O and Es-O bonds could arise from the departure of the coordinated water molecule and contraction of the ligand around the metal relative to the other [MIII DTPA(H2 O)]2- (M=Am, Cm, Bk) complexes. Taken together, these experimental and theoretical results demonstrate inhomogeneity within the trivalent transplutonium series that has been insinuated and debated in recent years, and that may also be leveraged for future nuclear waste reprocessing technologies.

Understanding the nature of covalent (band-like) vs ionic (atomic-like) electrons in metal oxides continues to be at the forefront of research in the physical sciences. In particular, the development of a coherent and quantitative model of bonding and electronic structure for the lanthanide dioxides, LnO2(Ln = Ce, Pr, and Tb), has remained a considerable challenge for both experiment and theory. Herein, relative changes in mixing between the O 2p orbitals and the Ln 4f and 5d orbitals in LnO2are evaluated quantitatively using O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) obtained with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For each LnO2, the results reveal significant amounts of Ln 5d and O 2p mixing in the orbitals of t2g(σ-bonding) and eg(π-bonding) symmetry. The remarkable agreement between experiment and theory also shows that significant mixing with the O 2p orbitals occurs in a band derived from the 4f orbitals of a2usymmetry (σ-bonding) for each compound. However, a large increase in orbital mixing is observed for PrO2that is ascribed to a unique interaction derived from the 4f orbitals of t1usymmetry (σ- and π-bonding). O K-edge XAS and DFT results are compared with complementary L3-edge and M5,4-edge XAS measurements and configuration interaction calculations, which shows that each spectroscopic approach provides evidence for ground state O 2p and Ln 4f orbital mixing despite inducing very different core-hole potentials in the final state.

A new binary compound, NpSe

© 2019 Coupling High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection (HERFD) with electric dipole selection rules, the uranium 5f 5/2 and 5f 7/2 Unoccupied Densities of States (UDOS) have been determined in UF 4 , UO 2 and UCd 11 . Striking changes were observed between UF 4 (5f 2 ) to UCd 11 (5f 3 ), consistent with the Intermediate Coupling Model. Results for UO 2 were confirmed by Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy (BIS). This new approach can be a powerful tool for shedding light on the hidden mysteries of Actinides 5f-electrons properties.

International audience; We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic structure studies of a series of thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) bis-tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes. These sandwich complexes show remarkable stability towards air and moisture, even at elevated temperatures. Electrochemical studies show the uranium complex to be stable in three different oxidation states; isolation of the oxidized species reveals a rare case of a non-innocent tetramethyltetraazaannulene (TMTAA) ligand.

A tetravalent cerium macrocyclic complex (CeLK4) was prepared with an octadentate terephthalamide ligand comprised of hard catecholate donors and characterized in the solution state by spectrophotometric titrations and electrochemistry and in the crystal by X-ray diffraction. The solution-state studies showed that L exhibits a remarkably high affinity toward Ce4+, with log β110 = 61(2) and ΔG = −348 kJ/mol, compared with log β110 = 32.02(2) for the analogous Pr3+ complex. In addition, L exhibits an unusual preference for forming CeL4– relative to formation of the analogous actinide complex, ThL4–, which has β110 = 53.7(5). The extreme stabilization of tetravalent cerium relative to its trivalent state is also evidenced by the shift of 1.91 V in the redox potential of the Ce3+/Ce4+ couple of the complex (measured at −0.454 V vs SHE). © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Recent X-ray measurements suggest a degree of valence fluctuation in plutonium and uranium intermetallics. We are applying a novel scheme, in conjunction with density functional theory, to predict 5f configuration fractions of states with valence fluctuations for the early actinide metals. For this purpose we perform constrained integer f-occupation calculations for the α phases of uranium, neptunium, and plutonium metals. For plutonium we also investigate the δ phase. The model predicts uranium and neptunium to be dominated by the f3and f4configurations, respectively, with only minor contributions from other configurations. For plutonium (both α and δ phase) the scenario is dramatically different. Here, the calculations predict a relatively even distribution between three valence configurations. The δ phase has a greater configuration fraction of f6compared to that of the α phase. The theory is consistent with the interpretations of modern X-ray experiments and we present resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy results for α-uranium.

The solution chemistry of a chelator developed for 227Th targeted alpha therapy was probed. The compound of interest is an octadentate ligand comprising four N-methyl-3-hydroxy-pyridine-2-one metal-binding units, two tertiary amine groups, and one carboxylate arm appended for bioconjugation. The seven p Ka values of the ligand and the stability constants of complexes formed with Th(IV), Hf(IV), Zr(IV), Gd(III), Eu(III), Al(III), and Fe(III) were determined. The ligand exhibits extreme thermodynamic selectivity toward tetravalent metal ions with a ca. 20 orders of magnitude difference between the formation constant of the Th(IV) species formed at physiological pH, namely [ThL]-, and that of its Eu(III) analogue. Likewise, log β110 values of 41.7 ± 0.3 and 26.9 ± 0.3 (T = 25 °C) were measured for [ThL]- and [FeIIIL]2-, respectively, highlighting the high affinity and selectivity of the ligand for Th ions over potentially competing endogenous metals. Single crystal X-ray analysis of the Fe(III) complex revealed a dinuclear 2:2 metal:chelator complex crystallizing in the space group P1. The formation of this dimeric species is likely favored by several intramolecular hydrogen bonds and the protonation state of the chelator in acidic media. LIII edge EXAFS data on the Th(IV) complexes of both the ligand and a monoclonal antibody conjugate revealed the expected mononuclear 1:1 metal:chelator coordination environment. This was also confirmed by high resolution mass spectrometry. Finally, kinetic experiments demonstrated that labeling the bioconjugated ligand with Th(IV) could be achieved and completed after 1 h at room temperature, reinforcing the high suitability of this chelator for 227Th targeted alpha therapy.
