Conditionally on the Tate--Shafarevich and Bloch--Kato Conjectures, we give an explicit upper bound on the size of the $p$-adic Chabauty--Kim locus, and hence on the number of rational points, of a smooth projective curve $X/\mathbb{Q}$ of genus $g\geq2$ in terms of $p$, $g$, the Mordell--Weil rank $r$ of its Jacobian, and the reduction types of $X$ at bad primes. Abstract

The main point of the paper is to take the explicit motivic Chabauty-Kim method developed in papers of Dan-Cohen--Wewers and Dan-Cohen and the author and make it work for non-rational curves. In particular, we calculate the abstract form of an element of the Chabauty-Kim ideal for $\mathbb{Z}[1/\ell]$-points on a punctured elliptic curve, and lay some groundwork for certain kinds of higher genus curves. For this purpose, we develop an "explicit Tannakian Chabauty-Kim method" using $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$-Tannakian categories of Galois representations in place of $\mathbb{Q}$-linear motives. In future work, we intend to use this method to explicitly apply the Chabauty-Kim method to a curve of positive genus in a situation where Quadratic Chabauty does not apply., Comment: Comments and corrections welcome!

4. Brauer and Etale Homotopy Obstructions to Rational Points on Open Covers

Abstract

In 2010, Poonen gave the first example of failure of the local-global principle that cannot be explained by Skorobogatov's \'etale Brauer-Manin obstruction. Motivated by this example, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction detects non-existence of rational points on a sufficiently fine Zariski open cover of any variety over an imaginary quadratic or totally real field. We provide some evidence for why this is expected to happen more generally over any number field, some of which relates to the section conjecture in anabelian geometry. We then prove a result about the behavior of the \'etale Brauer obstruction in fibrations of varieties using the \'etale homotopy obstruction of Harpaz and the second author. 6. Taking It Virtual: A Model for Successful Co-Curricular Student Experiences in Women and Gender Studies during COVID-19

Abstract

The COVID-19 global pandemic brought unexpected challenges to the curricular and co-curricular offerings of the Women and Gender Studies Program (WGST) at George Mason University. In March 2020, all courses were immediately transitioned to virtual, online experiences--none had previously been offered in a virtual format, programming ceased, and plans were quickly scrambled together to create graduation celebrations though commencement was officially "postponed." As Spring transitioned into Summer, and university officials made decisions about the Fall 2020 semester, faculty and staff of the program began to entirely rethink program offerings including courses, co-curricular programming, course recruitment, and strategies for continuing to offer a safe space. The authors argue that it is precisely the program's unique structure of integrating academics and student affairs that was pivotal in the successful transition and COVID response.

7. The polylog quotient and the Goncharov quotient in computational Chabauty-Kim theory I

Abstract

Polylogarithms are those multiple polylogarithms that factor through a certain quotient of the de Rham fundamental group of the thrice punctured line known as the polylogarithmic quotient. Building on work of Dan-Cohen, Wewers, and Brown, we push the computational boundary of our explicit motivic version of Kim's method in the case of the thrice punctured line over an open subscheme of $\mathrm{Spec}\,\mathbb{Z}$. To do so, we develop a greatly refined version of the algorithm of Dan-Cohen tailored specifically to this case, and we focus attention on the polylogarithmic quotient. This allows us to restrict our calculus with motivic iterated integrals to the so-called depth-one part of the mixed Tate Galois group studied extensively by Goncharov. We also discover an interesting consequence of the symmetry-breaking nature of the polylog quotient that forces us to symmetrize our polylogarithmic version of Kim's conjecture. They deserve the best possible care and treatment, yet their outcomes remain poor. The persistence of poor outcomes for youth in foster care reflects challenges of psychiatric diagnostic formulation and of service system design/access, both areas in which child and adolescent psychiatrists have a key role to improve care and outcomes.

Abstract

Given a partition $\lambda$ of n, consider the subspace $E_\lambda$ of $C^n$ where the first $\lambda_1$ coordinates are equal, the next $\lambda_2$ coordinates are equal, etc. In this paper, we study subspace arrangements $X_\lambda$ consisting of the union of translates of $E_\lambda$ by the symmetric group. In particular, we focus on determining when $X_\lambda$ is Cohen-Macaulay. This is inspired by previous work of the third author coming from the study of rational Cherednik algebras and which answers the question positively when all parts of $\lambda$ are equal. We show that $X_\lambda$ is not Cohen-Macaulay when $\lambda$ has at least 4 distinct parts, and handle a large number of cases when $\lambda$ has 2 or 3 distinct parts. Along the way, we also settle a conjecture of Sergeev and Veselov about the Cohen-Macaulayness of algebras generated by deformed Newton sums. 13. Elliptic Curves with Full 2-Torsion and Maximal Adelic Galois Representations

Abstract

In 1972, Serre showed that the adelic Galois representation associated to a non-CM elliptic curve over a number field has open image in GL_2(\hat{Z}). In Greicius' thesis, he develops necessary and sufficient criteria for determining when this representation is actually surjective and exhibits such an example. However, verifying these criteria turns out to be difficult in practice; Greicius describes tests for them that apply only to semistable elliptic curves over a specific class of cubic number fields. In this paper, we extend Greicius' methods in several directions. First, we consider the analogous problem for elliptic curves with full 2-torsion. Following Greicius, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the associated adelic representation to be maximal and also develop a battery of computationally effective tests that can be used to verify these conditions. We are able to use our tests to construct an infinite family of curves over Q(alpha) with maximal image, where alpha is the real root of x^3 + x + 1. Next, we extend Greicius' tests to more general settings, such as non-semistable elliptic curves over arbitrary cubic number fields. Abstract

Creating space for well-being and mindfulness activities in learning environments have been shown to enhance student success. In the first part of this session, a group of panelist speakers will engage in a facilitated discussion exploring what we mean by mindfulness and well-being, as well as the role of mindfulness and well-being in promoting self-care and learning. In the second part of the session, a second group of panelist speakers will briefly describe the specific activities and strategies they use in their teaching. This session will also engage participants in mindfulness practices throughout the session. Participants will leave with simple, concrete ways to engage their students in mindfulness activities in their courses and ways to frame the value of these exercises when presenting to students. Abstract

In this workshop, participants will have space and gain insight on best practices, challenges, and successes that faculty in interdisciplinary, social justice related disciplines have had in crafting basic level (100-200) courses. While larger disciplines have professional development opportunities and scholarship to look to in their curriculum development, there is very little SOTL work that focuses on the basic level social justice course. Faculty from Women and Gender Studies and Integrative Studies will discuss their experiences teaching 100 and 200 level gateway and Mason Core courses with class sizes of 20-40 and their challenges and successes in creating safe, engaging, inclusive and fun spaces for students. The faculty present will discuss their experiences teaching WMST 100: Global Representations of Women; WMST 200: Introduction to Women and Gender Studies; WMST 208: Introduction to LGBTQ Studies; and INTS 101: Narratives of Identity. Faculty will provide activities and assignments that have worked for them through multiple iterations of their courses as well as how some assignments are grounded in feminist pedagogies. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm and create specific activities for their students based on the content they are presented with from their facilitator team. Abstract

Increased professional concern regarding the evaluation of suspected child sexual abuse has focused the attention of clinicians and researchers on the statements and behaviors of children during investigative interviews. The early philosophy of 'believe the children' has given way to a search for consensus among professionals who perform these evaluations regarding what criteria should be used to identify sexually abused children. A small number of researchers have studied interviews with sexually abused children where other, independent criteria for validation are also present. Although this research has revealed interesting findings indicating promise, much more research is needed. Abstract

In the last century and a half, public and professional awareness of sexual abuse has emerged and been suppressed repeatedly. The 20th-century suppression of the problem has been linked to Freudianism, sexual modernism, and gender politics. Recent awareness of sexual abuse differs from awareness in the past because of the significant amount of current research attesting to the prevalence of sexual abuse and its injurious impact on human development. However, in the contemporary mental health professions, the courts, and the media, there has emerged an influential backlash against the latest discovery of child sexual victimization that utilizes arguments employed during earlier periods of suppression. Knowledge of the earlier cycles of discovery and suppression can assist professionals in understanding and countering present attempts to deny or minimize the problem of child sexual abuse.
