17. Quiet Intellects and the Place of Student Talk in Secondary English Classes: An Autoethnographic Inquiry

Abstract

This autoethnography traces the ten-year journey of one teacher's interest in and exploration of the experiences in English classes of high-achieving quiet students. Named Quiet Intellects (QIs), these students rarely or do not speak during the many district- and curricula-mandated evaluative tasks in my district that demand their oral contributions. To understand the reasoning that may have led to the current emphasis on student voice in my district, I first investigated the historical place and purpose of student talk in English classrooms. I reviewed extensive conversations I had with English department colleagues that were meant to help us understand the impact of our district's call for more student talk on our quiet students. From there, I conducted a critical observation of one common English department assessment driven by student talk. Finally, I compiled and analyzed the information obtained from a decade of discussions with QIs regarding their experiences of mandated oral tasks. QIs call into question the value of collaborative learning, articulate clearly their preference for writing over speaking, and bring to light the lack of preparation and coaching available for tasks that require speaking. Additionally, my study suggests the existence of two distinct groups of QIs. The silence of one group seemed to be driven by the pressure within the environment of the English classroom of high-stakes assessments requiring their oral contributions, which heightened their fear of peer and teacher judgment, error, and conflict with classmates when they spoke. These students proved to be quite talkative outside of the classroom. The second group, on the other hand, were quiet in all speaking situations, even with close friends and family members. Further investigation is needed, but this study emphatically demonstrates the need to interrogate classroom routines, practices, and curricular edicts for student evaluative tasks that favor sound over silence, demand student talk, and contribute to the silence and silencing of QIs. In the meantime, a balanced pedagogy that teaches skills of silence in tandem with skills of speaking is essential in a society that respects the sense and sounds of all voices. Abstract

We propose a Markovian model to understand how Italy's public sphere behaves on the green energy transition theme. The paper uses the example of solar photovoltaics as a point of reference. The adoption decision is assumed to be sequentially influenced by the network communication of each person or family and the payback period of the investment. We apply the model for a case study based on the evolution of residential PV systems in Italy over the 2006-2026 period. The baseline configuration of the model is calibrated based on the actual diffusion of residential PV in Italy from 2006 to 2020. The comprehensive analysis leads to a discussion of two interesting societal implications. (1) Cognitive biases such as hyperbolic discounting of individual future utility crucially influence inter-temporal green choices. Abstract

The first search for the lepton number violating decay K+→π0π−μ+e+ and lepton flavour violating decays K+→π0π+μ−e+, K+→π0π+μ+e− has been performed using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 2.9×10−10, 3.1×10−10 and 5.0×10−10, respectively, are obtained at 90% CL for the branching ratios of the three decays on the assumption of uniform phase-space distributions.

Abstract

We construct a class of time-symmetric initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum equation modeling elementary configurations of multiple ``almost isolated" systems. Each such initial data set consists of a collection of several localized sources of gravitational radiation, and lies in a family of data sets which is closed under scaling out the distances between the systems by arbitrarily large amounts. This class contains data sets which are not asymptotically flat, but to which nonetheless a finite ADM mass can be ascribed. The construction proceeds by a gluing scheme using the Brill--Lindquist metric as a template. Such initial data are motivated in part by a desire to understand the dynamical interaction of distant systems in the context of general relativity. As a by-product of the construction, we produce complete, scalar-flat initial data with trivial topology and infinitely many minimal spheres, as well as initial data with infinitely many Einstein--Rosen bridges., Comment: 40 pages

Abstract

A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. Abstract

This paper develops two mathematical models to understand subjects' behavior in response to the urgency of a change and inputs from governments e.g., (subsides) in the context of the diffusion of the solar photovoltaic in Italy. The first model is a Markovian model of interacting particle systems. The second one, instead, is a Mean Field Game model. In both cases, we derive the scaling limit deterministic dynamics, and we compare the latter to the Italian solar photovoltaic data. We identify periods where the first model describes the behavior of domestic data well and a period where the second model captures a particular feature of data corresponding to companies. The comprehensive analysis, integrated with a philosophical inquiry focusing on the conceptual vocabulary and correlative implications, leads to the formulation of hypotheses about the efficacy of different forms of governmental subsidies., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We previously demonstrated that consumption of U.S.-grown sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) prohibits inflammation and fibrosis in the liver and white adipose tissue in male diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice. This study investigated whether sugar kelp can elicit similar benefits in female DIO mice. Male and female C57BL/6J mice were fed a low-fat (LF) control, a high-fat/high-sucrose/high-cholesterol (HF) control, or HF containing 6% sugar kelp (HF-Kelp) for 16 weeks. Body weight gain, serum triglyceride and total lipids, and glucose intolerance were decreased in male HF-Kelp compared with HF control. Furthermore, sugar kelp decreased gonadal white adipose tissue (gWAT) weight with smaller adipocytes and total body fat in males. In gWAT, male HF-Kelp exhibited less inflammation and fibrosis than the HF control, confirmed by histological analysis. Moreover, HF-Kelp increased physical activity only in males. Gut microbiome analysis showed sugar kelp elevated observed species and altered beta diversity in both males and females, suggesting changes in the gut microbiome may contribute to the effects of sugar kelp on gWAT inflammation and fibrosis. Therefore, our results demonstrate that sugar kelp consumption prevents obesity-induced inflammation and fibrosis in WAT in male mice, which is attributed, at least in part, to modest increases in metabolic rates, energy expenditure, and physical activity, and also modulating the gut microbiota.

Abstract

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recognizes the potential of technologies based on the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in revolutionizing clinical approaches to the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer. Recent research suggests that once NPs come into contact with the biological fluid of cancer patients, they are covered by proteins, forming a “protein corona” composed of hundreds of plasma proteins. The concept of a personalized, disease-specific protein corona, demonstrating substantial differences in NP corona profiles between patients with and without cancer, has been introduced. We developed the design of an experimental prospective single-center study with patients allocated in a 1:1:1 ratio of one of three arms: untreated patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), untreated patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer (PCa), and metastatic prostate cancer patients starting systemic therapies with new androgen-targeted agents or taxanes. The protocol aims to develop and implement sensitive nanotools with two distinct objectives: First, to design NPs capable of selectively binding and detecting biomarkers in order to build a predictive diagnostic model to effectively discriminate between patient sera affected by BPH and PCa. Secondly, within the population with PCa, in the case of initial advanced metastatic diagnosis, the objective is to find biomarkers capable of predicting the response to systemic treatments to improve the precision and efficiency of monitoring treatment outcomes. For protein and metabolite corona experiments, we developed a cross-reactive sensor array platform with cancer detection capacity made of three liposomal formulations with different surface charges. For proteomic-NP studies, proteins were identified and quantified using nano-high-performance LC (nanoHPLC) coupled with MS/MS (nanoHPLC−MS/MS). Metabolites were instead analyzed using an untargeted metabolomic approach. Compared with previous review articles, the novelty of this review is represented by the analysis of the possible clinical applications of protein corona NPs focused on PCa and the presentation of a new clinical protocol in the metastatic phase of PCa.

40. Temporary Flow Diversion in Oncological Embolization Procedures Using Degradable Starch Microspheres

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to report on the application of degradable starch microspheres to provide flow diversion by means of temporary embolization of healthy tissues in oncological endovascular procedures when tumor feeding vessels are not selectively accessible. Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective analysis of patients undergoing visceral embolization procedures of malignancies. The inclusion criteria were as follows: flow diversion performed by injection of degradable starch microspheres, visceral embolization procedures with unfeasible superselective catheterism of the target, and a malignant pathology. Technical success was defined as complete flow diversion with temporary exclusion of the non-target district from arterial flow, associated with successful embolization of the target. Clinical success was intended as procedural achievement with patient clinical improvement. Results: Sixteen patients were included in this analysis. Peripheral embolization procedures were performed in the coeliac visceral district all in oncologic patients, including 4 transarterial radioembolization work-up procedures in patients with hepatocarcinoma, 10 chemioembolization procedures in patients with hepatocarcinoma (8) or cholangiocarcinoma (2), and 2 palliative transarterial embolizations in patients with gastric cancer. Technical success was obtained in 100% of the cases, while clinical success was reached in 87.5%: in two chemioembolization procedures, despite technical success, the procedural clinical benefits were partial, with an incomplete target lesion response. Minor complications occurred in five patients (31.2%). Conclusions: In this study, temporary flow diversion with degradable starch microspheres during oncological embolization procedures was safe and effective; this approach is suitable to protect healthy surrounding tissues when vessels feeding the target cannot be selected with the microcatheter.
