1. Relativistic Runge-Lenz vector: from ${\cal N}=4$ SYM to SO(4) scalar field theory

Abstract

Starting from ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and using an appropriate Higgs mechanism we reconsider the construction of a scalar field theory non-minimally coupled to a Coulomb potential with a relativistic SO(4) symmetry and check for scalar field consistency conditions. This scalar field theory can also be obtained from a relativistic particle Lagrangian with a proper implementation of the non-minimal coupling. We provide the generalization of the non-relativistic construction of the Runge-Lenz vector to the relativistic case and show explicitly that this new vector generates the SO(4) algebra. Using the power of the SO(4) symmetry, we calculate the relativistic hydrogen atom spectrum. We provide a generalization of the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel transformation to the relativistic case and relate our results with the corresponding relativistic oscillator. Finally, in the light of these results, we reconsider the calculation of the hydrogen atom spectrum from the cusp anomalous dimension given in [2]., Comment: 17 pages. Abstract

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) causes invasive infections in newborns, being the most frequent the maternal transmission. Epidemiological studies use molecular techniques that assess genetic diversity, including random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) that is found to be accessible, sensitive and uses arbitrary primers to amplify polymorphic segments of DNA by PCR. The objective was to determine the clonal relationship between GBS strains recovered from mothers and their respective newborns. Four pairs of GBS isolates obtained from vaginal-rectal swabs of mothers and blood cultures of their newborns were studied with RAPD. Primers OPS11, OPB17 and OPB18 were used to select one with the ability to discriminate between non-genetically related strains. The Hunter-Gaston formula that establishes the discrimination index (D) was used; when D>0.90, it is considered that the isolates belong to different clones. The amplification profiles for the eight isolates, using each primer independently, allowed to calculate a D=1 for OPS11, and D=0.84 for OPB17 and OPB18. Therefore, OPS11 was selected for the study of the clonal relationship of the isolates, and similar amplification profiles were found by RAPD for each mother-newborn pair of GBS isolates. Different amplification profiles were observed between pairs of mother-newborn strains, which reveals the discrimination between unrelated strains, confirmed by pulsating field electrophoresis (PFGE). These results indicated vertical transmission for each studied case and robustness of the OPS11 primer. Appropriate conditions of the RAPD trial were found, which is useful for epidemiological studies.

36. Minimal peptide length requirements for CD4<SUP>+</SUP> T cell clones--implications for molecular mimicry and T cell survival

Abstract

CD4+ T lymphocytes usually recognize peptides of 12-16 amino acids in the context of HLA class II molecules. We have recently used synthetic peptide combinatorial libraries to dissect in detail antigen recognition by autoreactive CD4+ T cell clones (TCC). The results of these studies demonstrated that antigen recognition by T cells is highly degenerate and that many cross-reactive ligands can be defined, some of which much more potent than the selecting autoantigen. Based on these observations, we examined the response of a myelin basic protein-specific HLA class II-restricted CD4+ TCC to truncation variants of optimal ligands. Surprisingly, pentapeptides, tetrapeptides and even tripeptides derived from different segments of the optimal ligands were recognized by the TCC, and some were even more potent than the selecting autoantigen. In addition, these peptides enhanced the survival of the TCC at low concentration. The relevance of this finding was supported by the generation of pentapeptide-specific CD4+ TCC from peripheral blood lymphocytes. These observations not only change existing views on the length requirements for activation of CD4+ HLA class II-restricted T cells, but also extend our knowledge about the flexibility of TCR recognition and the potential for cross-reactivity in the immune system.

Abstract

Prenatal administration of typical (desipramine, DMI) and atypical (viloxazine, VX and mianserin, MS) antidepressants, at dose levels which do not influence reproductive success or neonatal mortality, produces subtle behavioural changes in offspring of treated rats. Physical signs, such as pinna detachment (unfolding of external ear) and eye opening, were not modified by prenatal exposure to any of the antidepressants tested. However, at 23 days of age, DMI, MS and VX (only in males) pretreated rats showed higher levels of locomotor activity with respect to the control group. At 60 days of age, locomotor activity levels in DMI-exposed animals were still higher than in the saline-pretreated rats.
