Abstract

SPHERE+ is a proposed upgrade of the SPHERE instrument at the VLT, which is intended to boost the current performances of detection and characterization for exoplanets and disks. SPHERE+ will also serve as a demonstrator for the future planet finder (PCS) of the European ELT. The main science drivers for SPHERE+ are 1/ to access the bulk of the young giant planet population down to the snow line ($3-10$ au), to bridge the gap with complementary techniques (radial velocity, astrometry); 2/ to observe fainter and redder targets in the youngest ($1-10$\,Myr) associations compared to those observed with SPHERE to directly study the formation of giant planets in their birth environment; 3/ to improve the level of characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres by increasing the spectral resolution in order to break degeneracies in giant planet atmosphere models. Achieving these objectives requires to increase the bandwidth of the xAO system (from $\sim$1 to 3\,kHz) as well as the sensitivity in the infrared (2 to 3\,mag). These features will be brought by a second stage AO system optimized in the infrared with a pyramid wavefront sensor. As a new science instrument, a medium resolution integral field spectrograph will provide a spectral resolution from 1000 to 5000 in the J and H bands. Abstract

Astrometry is one of the main science case which drives the requirements of the next multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems for future extremely large telescopes. The small diffraction limited point-spread function (PSF) and the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of these instruments, promise astrometric precision at the level of micro-arcseconds. However, optical distortions have to be as low as possible to achieve the high demanding astrometry requirements. In addition to static distortions, the opto-mechanical instabilities cause astrometric errors that can be major contributors to the astrometry error budget. The present article describes the analysis, at design level, of the effects of opto-mechanical instabilities when coupled with optical surface irregularities due to the manufacturing process. We analyse the notable example of the Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY (MAORY) for the extremely large telescope (ELT). Ray-tracing simulations combined with a Monte Carlo approach are used to estimate the geometrical structure and magnitude of field distortion resulting from the optical design. We consider the effects of distortion on the MCAO correction showing that it is possible achieve the micro-arcseconds astrometric precision once corresponding accuracy is obtained by both optical design and manufacturing. We predict that for single-epoch observations, an astrometric error below 50$\mu$as can be achieved for exposure times up to 2 min, provided about 100 stars are available to remove fifth-order distortions. Such performance could be reproducible for multi-epoch observations despite the time-variable distortion induced by instrument instabilities., Comment: MNRAS main journal. Accepted 2019 May 06. Abstract

We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate density \Sigma_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multiple images with a r.m.s. of 0.35", and the tangential stretch is well depicted by a giant multiply-imaged Lya arc. D1 is part of an interacting star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue ultraviolet slope (\beta ~ -2.5, F(\lambda) ~ \lambda^\beta) and the prominent Lya emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (< 10-100 Myr), moderately dust-attenuated (E(B-V)<0.15) stellar populations are present and organised in dense subcomponents. We argue that D1 (with a stellar mass of 2 x 10^7 Msun) might contain a young massive star cluster of M < 10^6 Msun and Muv~-15.6 (or m_uv=31.1), confined within a region of 13 pc, and not dissimilar from some local super star clusters (SSCs). The ultraviolet appearance of D1 is also consistent with a simulated local dwarf hosting a SSC placed at z=6 and lensed back to the observer. This compact system fits into some popular globular cluster formation scenarios. We show that future high spatial resolution imaging (e.g., E-ELT/MAORY-MICADO and VLT/MAVIS) will allow us to spatially resolve light profiles of 2-8 pc., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted

The VST (VLT Survey Telescope) is a 2.6 m class Alt-Az telescope to be installed at Mount Paranal in the Atacama desert, Chile, in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site. The VST is a wide-field imaging facility planned to supply databases for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) science and carry out stand-alone observations in the UV to I spectral range. This paper will focus on the distributed control system of active optics based on CAN bus and PIC microcontrollers. Both axial and radial pads of the primary mirror will be equipped by astatic lever supports controlled by microcontroller units. We present the concept and preliminary design of the Galileo OH Subtracted Spectrograph [GOHSS], a multifibre NIR spectrograph for faint objects. The instrument represents a collaboration between the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge and the Observatories of Naples and Rome and will be a second-light instrument for the 3.6m Galileo telescope located on La Palma. The NIR spectrograph accomplishes OH night-sky suppression in a different way from the hardware solution used by both OHS (Maihara etal) and COHSI (Piche' et al). GOHSS provides a multiechelle design with software subtraction capable of yielding ~28 spectra in J+H bands at a spectral resolution R~3000. Abstract

International audience; The DREAMS (Dust characterization, Risk assessment and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface) instrument on Schiaparelli lander of ExoMars 2016 mission was an autonomous meteorological station designed to completely characterize the Martian atmosphere on surface, acquiring data not only on temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and its direction, but also on solar irradiance, dust opacity and atmospheric electrification; this comprehensive set of parameters would assist the quantification of risks and hazards for future manned exploration missions mainly related to the presence of airborne dust.Schiaparelli landing on Mars was in fact scheduled during the foreseen dust storm season (October 2016 in Meridiani Planum) allowing DREAMS to directly measure the characteristics of such extremely harsh environment.DREAMS instrument’s architecture was based on a modular design developing custom boards for analog and digital channel conditioning, power distribution, on board data handling and communication with the lander. The boards, connected through a common backbone, were hosted in a central electronic unit assembly and connected to the external sensors with dedicated harness. Designed with very limited mass and an optimized energy consumption, DREAMS was successfully tested to operate autonomously, relying on its own power supply, for at least two Martian days (sols) after landing on the planet.A total of three flight models were fully qualified before launch through an extensive test campaign comprising electrical and functional testing, EMC verification and mechanical and thermal vacuum cycling; furthermore following the requirements for planetary protection, contamination control activities and assay sampling were conducted before model delivery for final integration on spacecraft .During the six months cruise to Mars following the successful launch of ExoMars on 14th March 2016, periodic check outs were conducted to verify instrument health check and update mission timelines for operation. Elaboration of housekeeping data showed that the behaviour of the whole instrument was nominal during the whole cruise. Unfortunately DREAMS was not able to operate on the surface of Mars, due to the known guidance anomaly during the descent that caused Schiaparelli to crash at landing.The adverse sequence of events at 4 km altitude anyway triggered the transition of the lander in surface operative mode, commanding switch on the DREAMS instrument, which was therefore able to correctly power on and send back housekeeping data. This proved the nominal performance of all DREAMS hardware before touchdown demonstrating the highest TRL of the unit for future missions.The spare models of DREAMS are currently in use at university premises for the development of autonomous units to be used in cubesat mission and in probes for stratospheric balloons launches in collaboration with Italian Space Agency.

Abstract

International audience; The ExoMars programme, which is carried out by European Space Agency (ESA) in cooperation with the Russian federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), foresees a two-steps mission to Mars. The first mission consists of an orbiter and an Entry Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module (EDM) to be launched in January 2016 and is scheduled to land on the planet during the statistical dust storm season; the second mission includes a descent module, a surface platform and a rover and will be launched in 2018. The DREAMS (Dust characterization, Risk assessment and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface) experiment for ExoMars 2016 is an autonomous meteorological station designed to study the effect of dust on Martian environment which will operate for two Martian days (sols) relying on its own power supply after landing. DREAMS includes a suite of sensors able to analyse temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction and solar irradiance as well as an electric field probe which will perform the first electrical characterization of Mars surface atmosphere.

Abstract

We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z  = 6.143 and showing a star formation rate density ΣSFR ∼ 1000 M⊙ yr−1 kpc−2 (or conservatively >300 M⊙ yr−1 kpc−2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N ≳ 40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1. D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4(±5.0) behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2 ± 4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multiple images with a rms of 0.35 arcsec. D1 is part of an interacting star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue ultraviolet slope (β ≃ −2.5, F λ ∼ λβ), and the prominent Lyα emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (<10−100 Myr), moderately dust-attenuated (E (B − V) < 0.15) stellar populations are present and organized in dense subcomponents. We argue that D1 (with a stellar mass of 2 × 107 M⊙) might contain a young massive star cluster of M ≲ 106 M⊙ and M UV ≃ −15.6 (or m UV = 31.1), confined within a region of 13 pc, and not dissimilar from some local super star clusters (SSCs). The ultraviolet appearance of D1 is also consistent with a simulated local dwarf hosting an SSC placed at z  = 6 and lensed back to the observer. This compact system fits into some popular globular cluster formation scenarios. We show that future high spatial resolution imaging (e.g. E-ELT/MAORY-MICADO and VLT/MAVIS) will allow us to spatially resolve light profiles of 2–8 pc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The VST (Very Large Telescope Survey Telescope) is an 2.6 m class Alt-Az telescope which will be installed in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Paranal site, Chile. It has been designed by the Technology Working Group of the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte, Italy. The VST is an 1 degree(s) X 1 degree(s) wide-field imaging facility planned to supply databases for the ESO VLT science and carry out stand-alone observations in the UV to I spectral range starting in the year 2001. All the solutions adopted in the VST design comply to the ESO VLT standards. This paper reports a technical overview of the telescope design.

Abstract

The encoder is the most used angular transducer in position control applications, such as the main axes position control of a telescope. In astronomical applications a very high precision in axes control is required. So a good encoder system design is essential to satisfy the requirements settled by the scientific goals. Today very good encoder systems (glass disk and associated readout electronics) are provided by several suppliers, with multiple readouts and error compensation capabilities to increase the reading precision and lessen the errors. Nevertheless during the lifetime of the system some unexpected errors can arise. In this paper some techniques to recognize, analyze and lessen the unavoidable encoder system error are described, with reference to some case studies.

50. Low power proximity electronics for dust analysers based on light scattering

Abstract

The present paper focuses on the development of an optimized version of the Proximity Electronics (PE) for dust analysers based on static light scattering. This kind of instruments, aimed to the systematic measurement of the size of dust grains in Martian atmosphere, was developed by the Cosmic Physics and Planetology Group at the INAF Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC) and University Parthenope (LFC group), in Naples, Italy. One of these instruments, the MEDUSA Experiment, was selected for the Humboldt Payload of the ExoMars mission, the first mission to Mars of the ESA Aurora Programme. Thereafter, this mission was revised because of increasing costs and lack of funds and the MEDUSA experiment has been completely re-engineered to meet more demanding constraints of mass and power consumption. The dust analyser under development is named MicroMED, as it is a lighter and more compact version of MEDUSA. MicroMED is provided with an Optical System (OS) based on the same concept of the one present in MEDUSA, but with a low power PE and low power laser source. This paper reports the features and the tests results of three versions of low power PE developed for MicroMED, and also compares two basic approaches, one based on a linear amplifier, derived from the solution implemented in two different MEDUSA breadboards (B/Bs), and the other one based on a logarithmic amplifier, with better performance in terms of compactness and low power consumption.
