On November 9, 1989, after 28 years standing, the Berlin Wall is torn down. This event triggered a series of events that would eventually bring down the Eastern Bloc and socialism in Europe. Throughout this work we will analyze the testimony of three people related to the Spanish Communist Movement and we will take a tour of their lives.

This paper explores how persuasive is the exploitation of image-schematic devices in advertising, more specifically how they are used for introducing sexism. Using a combined axiological-relevance-theoretic approach we have analysed ten advertisements selected from an online corpus, ‘The Advertising is Good for You’ blog, and its section on ‘Sexist Advertising’. Our analyses have proved that image schematic devices are used to introduce sexism in the advertisements under analysis, mostly the image schemas of space, force, multiplicity and attribute, and mostly by means of covert and weakly overt forms of communication. These image schematic devices seem to be not merely representative of universal experience, but crucially tied to specific socio-cultural cognition, as also suggested by Sinha (2002), Kimmel (2005) and Zlatev (2005), and special cognitive effort and effects are involved with understanding them. Yet, although they seem to contradict a formal application of the Principle of Relevance, as they involve additional processing effort, this is often offset by the extra effects like the pleasure in processing the ad and ‘getting’ the right meaning and value(s). This pleasurable experience is one important way in which advertisements are persuasive (Meyers-Levy and Malaviya, 1999).

Mosquito-borne viruses are emerging or re-emerging globally, afflicting millions of people around the world. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, is the principal vector of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, and has well-established populations across tropical and subtropical urban areas of the Americas, including the southern United States. While intense arboviral epidemics have occurred in Mexico and further south in the Americas, local transmission in the United States has been minimal. Here, we study Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus host feeding patterns and vertebrate host communities in residential environments of South Texas to identify host-utilization relative to availability. Only 31% of Ae. aegypti blood meals were derived from humans, while 50% were from dogs and 19% from other wild and domestic animals. In Cx. quinquefasciatus, 67% of blood meals were derived from chicken, 22% came from dogs, 9% from various wild avian species, and 2% from other mammals including one human, one cat, and one pig. We developed a model for the reproductive number, R0, for Zika virus (ZIKV) in South Texas relative to northern Mexico using human disease data from Tamaulipas, Mexico. We show that ZIKV R0 in South Texas communities could be greater than one if the risk of human exposure to Ae. aegypti bites in these communities is at least 60% that of Northern Mexico communities. The high utilization of non-human vertebrates and low risk of human exposure in South Texas diminishes the outbreak potential for human-amplified urban arboviruses transmitted by Ae. aegypti.

In this paper, we provide the groundwork for an analysis of metaphor from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. This study attempts to show an interpretation of metaphor which is different from a mere comparison or substitution function and is by no means a deviant or marginal process. We refer to metaphor not only as a matter of language but also as one of thought, that is, in the way we conceptualize one mental domain in terms of another. The specific focus is to analyse the metaphors used in advertising to transfer values to a banking institution. As a result, we aim to demonstrate that cognitive semantics and axiology are closely related.

Brand designers often consciously or unconsciously make use of cognitive operations to convey positive values to brand names. This paper aims to look into the most prominent axiological values in Moroccan drink brand names and how they are introduced through cognitive operations such as comparison metaphors, correlation metaphors, domain expansion, domain reduction and metonymic chains. In addition, we will show the verbal or visual modes in which they are manifested. To this end, we have selected a corpus of sample brands taken from the Office Marocain de la Propriété Industrielle et Commerciale (OMPIC). This work has been structured according to the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor and Metonymy (Lakoff & Johnson 1980, 1999; Ruiz de Mendoza & Pérez, 2011) and extended to axiological semantics (Krzeszowski 1997, 2004) and to specialized discourse (Felices Lago, 1996, 1999, 2002; Koller, 2009, among others). With this study we will give an account of the cognitive means used to denote values linked to this product category.

This paper takes a cognitive perspective on the semantics of Moroccan brand names, an unexplored territory so far, and analyzes the role of the metonymy in a corpus-based analysis in cosmetic brand names. More particularly, we focus on the following: to shed some light on the metonymic cognitive operations in these names (domain expansion and domain reduction metonymies together with metonymic chains), to determine the occurrence frequency of metonymy in comparison to metaphor, to reveal the modes (visual, verbal) in which the brand names are manifested, and to examine if there is any connection between the type of cosmetics and the metonymic operations cued. In this light, the paper yields some significant findings: the most salient feature in our corpus is the low occurrence frequency of reduction metonymy that is largely outnumbered by its converse operations, expansion metonymy. Metonymic complexes are highly productive mechanisms for cosmetic brand-name creation, especially their significant presence in skincare and makeup brands. In this way, the conscious use of these mechanisms by brand designers can help in boosting brand identity and help in building a favorable brand image in an economical way.

- Abstract
This paper presents a corpus-based analysis of printed eco-friendly car advertisements in English in line with the growing consumer interest in environmental issues and the development of green advertising. The aim of the research is threefold: 1) to unveil the content cognitive operations (for the purpose of this research, metonymy, metonymic chain, metaphoric amalgam and metaphor) underlying the ads and their modes of representation; 2) to examine the relationship between (i) these conceptual operations and the environmental claims made by advertisers, and (ii) the environmental claims made by advertisers and the text-image interaction. In this light, the paper yields two major findings: a) the cognitive operations underlying our corpus are usually rendered in the visual and verbal modes; b) the environmental claims underlying the ads correlate with the conceptual content and the text-image interplay. The conscious use of these mechanisms by advertisers can help the manner in which messages are interpreted., Depto. de Estudios Ingleses: Lingüística y Literatura, Fac. de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, TRUE, pub

The aim of this study to shed some light on the way meaning is constructed in different stages in the Brexit process through some covers of The Economist magazine. The present paper lies within the scope of the research into the instantiation of metaphor, metonymy and image schemas. This analysis has been structured according to the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson 1980; Ruiz de Mendoza & Pérez, 2011, among others) on the one hand, and the Multimodal Theory (Forceville 1996, 2009, 2012, 2016; Forceville & Urios-Aparisi, 2009) on the other, which have revealed that meaning is created through modes of communication other than verbal ones. The paper shows the role of monomodal and multimodal metaphor and metonymy as persuasive devices in magazine covers and the image-schematic basis of many metaphors and metonymies. In addition the results reveal that many multimodal metaphors are actually metonymy-based.

The aim of this study is to shed some light on the way meaning is constructed in print beer ads. The present paper lies within the scope of the research into the instantiation of metaphor, metonymy and image schemas in advertising. It analyses the role of these conceptual mechanisms from a contrastive perspective on the basis of an on-line corpus of English and French print beer ads. The theoretical underpinnings of this paper are based on the Cognitive Theory of Metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson 1980; Ruiz de Mendoza and Pérez 2011, among others) on the one hand, and the studies on multimodal metaphor (Forceville 1996, 2009, 2012, 2016; Forceville and Urios-Aparisi 2009) on the other, which have revealed that meaning is created through modes of communication other than verbal ones.

- Abstract
"Research has shown that language and culture are closely related (e.g., Brown, 2007; Kramsch, 1998; Kuang, 2007; Savignon & Sysoyev, 2005) and are best acquired together (Schulz, 2007). This paper aims to demonstrate how project-based learning (PBL), one of the main innovative approaches in the current educational landscape, can be useful for teaching culture in the English language classroom at the tertiary educational level. PBL is a teaching approach in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge (Kingston, 2018). According to different studies in the field (Kavlu, 2017), this approach can be more engaging and motivating for English language learners than traditional methods. First, the language is being used for an authentic purpose, which gives the language relevance. Further, learners develop content knowledge as well as critical thinking, creative thinking and communication skills. This study will focus on the implementation of PBL in the English language classroom in different degree programs: Primary Education, Infant Education, Hispanic Philology and Humanities. Students created an authentic final product that explored cultural aspects of English-speaking countries in combination with different subjects such as geography, history, literature and economy. The findings are based on a questionnaire that measures tertiary students’ motivation levels and expectations in relation to this pedagogical framework."

The association between the indoor environment and lifetime prevalence of otitis media (OM) in Australian children was assessed. We analysed data from a cross-sectional study of children, aged 7–11 years, performed in twelve Australian cities during 2007–2008. The main outcome was a parental report of their child’s diagnosis with OM by a doctor. Information on the indoor environment (energy sources used for heating, cooling, and cooking, pets, and second-hand smoke exposure), in the first year of life and at present, was collected from parents by a questionnaire. Multi-level logistic regression models were used to adjust for individual- and area-level confounders. Our analysis comprised 2872 children (51% female, mean age: 10.0 (SD 1.2)). Of those, 1097 (39%) were reported to have OM. Exposure to gas heating in the first year of life was significantly associated with higher odds of OM in adjusted models (OR:1.22; 95% CI: 1.00,1.47), as was current exposure to reverse-cycle air conditioning (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.27,1.82). Ownership of a cat or dog at any time was also associated with high odds of OM (OR: 1.50; 95% CI: 1.17,1.92). No other significant associations were observed. In this national study of Australian children, indoor environmental exposures associated with the lifetime prevalence of OM were gas heating, reverse-cycle air conditioning and pet ownership. Exposures in both early life and later childhood may both play a role in OM.

Most studies of long-term air pollution exposure and children's respiratory health have been performed in urban locations with moderate pollution levels. We assessed the effect of outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2), as a proxy for urban air pollution, on current asthma and lung function in Australia, a low-pollution setting. We undertook a national population-based cross-sectional study of children aged 7–11 years living in 12 Australian cities. We collected information on asthma symptoms from parents via questionnaire and measured children's lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1], forced vital capacity [FVC]) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide [FeNO]). We estimated recent NO2 exposure (last 12 months) using monitors near each child's school, and used a satellite-based land-use regression (LUR) model to estimate NO2 at each child's school and home. Our analysis comprised 2630 children, among whom the prevalence of current asthma was 14.9%. Mean (±SD) NO2 exposure was 8.8 ppb (±3.2) and 8.8 ppb (±2.3) for monitor- and LUR-based estimates, respectively. Mean percent predicted post-bronchodilator FEV1 and FVC were 101.7% (±10.5) and 98.8% (±10.5), respectively. The geometric mean FeNO concentration was 9.4 ppb (±7.1).An IQR increase in NO2 (4.0 ppb) was significantly associated with increased odds of having current asthma; odds ratios (ORs) were 1.24 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.43) and 1.54 (95% CI: 1.26, 1.87) for monitor- and LUR-based estimates, respectively. Increased NO2 exposure was significantly associated with decreased percent predicted FEV1 (−1.35 percentage points [95% CI: −2.21, −0.49]) and FVC (−1.19 percentage points [95% CI: −2.04, −0.35], and an increase in FeNO of 71% (95% CI: 38%, 112%).Exposure to outdoor NO2 was associated with adverse respiratory health effects in this population-based sample of Australian children. The relatively low NO2 levels at which these effects were observed highlight the potential benefits of continuous exposure reduction. The high utilization of non-human vertebrates and low risk of human exposure in South Texas diminishes the outbreak potential for human-amplified urban arboviruses transmitted by Ae. aegypti.
