Negli ultimi anni, a causa dell’incremento dei costi di smaltimento dei fanghi prodotti nel corso dei processi depurativi basati su metodi biologici, si va diffondendo sempre più la tendenza e la necessità di ridurne la produzione direttamente alla fonte, ovvero nel corso dello stesso processo che li genera. Diversi metodi sono proposti in letteratura e molti di essi sono già coperti da brevetto (OSA®, Cannibal®, Biminnex®), applicati ai processi biologici a fanghi attivi convenzionali (CAS). Il limite di questi processi è che una riduzione molto spinta della produzione di fango di supero, ottenuta sottoponendo la biomassa a stress biologico, comporta significativi peggioramenti della qualità dell’effluente, compromettendo, di fatto, l’efficacia del processo depurativo. Parallelamente alla problematica dei fanghi di depurazione, oggi gli impianti di trattamento delle acque reflue sono chiamati a rispettare standard di qualità, per quanto concerne l’effluente depurato, sempre più stringenti, tali da richiedere l’implementazione di processi avanzati e di ottimizzare le performance di processo. L’oggetto del brevetto è uno schema di un impianto per la rimozione biologica dei nutrienti (carbonio, azoto e fosforo) dalle acque reflue, da applicare in sistemi di trattamento biologico avanzato con filtrazione su membrana, del tipo MBR (BioReattori a Membrana – Membrane BioReactor). Esso consente di minimizzare la produzione di fango di supero e di ottimizzare, contemporaneamente, sia le performance depurative del processo biologico che quelle idrauliche di filtrazione della membrana. Il brevetto consiste nell’inserimento di un reattore anaerobico all’interno di uno schema di processo di pre-denitrificazione, tra il reattore anossico e quello aerobico, nella linea di flusso principale del sistema (mainstream). Il reattore anaerobico, avente un tempo di detenzione idraulica di 8 ore, riferito alla portata di alimentazione, opera in parallelo rispetto alla preesistente linea di processo e riceve un flusso influente, pari al 100% della portata alimentata all’impianto, proveniente dal reattore anossico. Dal reattore anaerobico, la miscela liquame-fango procede verso il reattore aerobico, nel quale la membrana opera la separazione solido (fanghi) – liquido (permeato). Il fango viene quindi ricircolato in testa al reattore anossico, mentre il permeato viene allontanato come effluente depurato del sistema. Dal punto di vista del processo, lo stress metabolico nel reattore anaerobico, imposto dalle condizioni di anaerobiosi e carenza di substrato organico (condizioni endogene), quest’ultimo in gran parte rimosso nel reattore di monte (anossico) per il processo di denitrificazione, favorisce il fenomeno della lisi cellulare. Da questo processo si genera un substrato organico secondario (substrato endogeno), costituito dalle cellule batteriche stesse e dal contenuto intracellulare, che viene utilizzato dai batteri stessi come fonte di nutrimento (fenomeno della crescita criptica). In condizioni anaerobiche, questo substrato viene utilizzato da specifici ceppi batterici (batteri fosforo-accumulanti, Phopshorous Accumulating Organisms, PAO) per poter operare la rimozione biologica del fosforo. Il processo consente, quindi, di poter ottenere simultaneamente la rimozione biologica del fosforo, con fonti di carbonio endogeno, con rendimenti di rimozione superiori al 95%, e la riduzione della produzione di fango di supero del 65% operando a temperatura ambiente. Inoltre, la lunga permanenza del fango in condizioni anaerobiche ed endogene, spinge la biomassa ad una più efficace degradazione della sostanza organica derivante dalla lisi cellulare (proteine, carboidrati), che riduce in maniera sensibile lo sporcamento della membrana (fouling) (>200%), diminuendo la frequenza di lavaggi fisici e chimici e preservandone la vita utile. Il brevetto proposto può trovare applicazione in tutti gli impianti per il trattamento di reflui municipali del tipo MBR che operano la rimozione biologica dell’azoto, nell’ottica di interventi di adeguamento alle normative ambientali per la rimozione del fosforo e di riduzione dei costi di gestione legati allo smaltimento dei fanghi e di manutenzione delle membrane.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of moderate and drastic long-termincrease of salinity.Particularly, the study was aimed at assessing the shock effecton nitritationand denitritation kineticsof halophilic biomass inboth forms:flocculent activated sludge and granular sludge.

Sono state investigate le performance di due impianti SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor), alimentati con refluo sintetico a base di acetato di sodio e funzionanti con due differenti tipi di fango aerobico granulare, in termini di dimensione media dei granuli. In particolare, è stato analizzato l’impatto della differente dimensione dei granuli sul processo di nitrificazione e denitrificazione simultanea (Simultaneous Nitrification Denitrification, SND) e sulla rimozione biologica del fosforo. Allo scopo di valutare l’efficienza di tale tipo di processo, sono state applicate differenti strategie di coltivazione e condizioni operative, in termini di carico organico (COD 600-1200 mg/L) e azoto (60-120 mg/L) e di concentrazioni di ossigeno. I risultati ottenuti hanno evidenziato una soddisfacente resa di rimozione dei nutrienti e delle sostanze organiche, anche in condizioni di elevate concentrazioni di ossigeno disciolto. Inoltre, sono state rilevate differenti condizioni metaboliche (anossiche, anaerobiche e aerobiche) all’interno dei granuli, durante le fasi di inedia e abbondanza.

The paper focused on the evolution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) content during the granulation process in two Granular Sequencing Batch Airlift Reactors (GSBAR) (3,5 L) fed with synthetic and industrial wastewater. Results showed that EPSs, in particular proteins (PN) were mainly produced during the feast phase because of high substrate availability, especially under conditions of metabolic stress. Than EPSs content reduced during the famine period. More in detail, during the granulation process, a greater polysaccharides (PS) consumption occurred in both reactors, while PN content reduced significantly only in R2. As a result PN/PS ratio increased significantly during granules formation, confirming the key role of proteins on granules formation. R2 granules exhibited a greater amount of PN on average, and this resulted in a more rapid granulation. However, due to the several consumption of PN during the famine period, R2 granules resulted weaker an less dense than R1 ones, hence more susceptible to breakdown. When EPSs consumption during the famine phase reduced, granules reached their maturation.

The paper reports the main results of an experimental study carried out on a Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) pilot plant characterized by intermittent aeration. The effect of different aeration/non aeration ratio (TA/TNA) on biomass behavior, in terms of heterotrophic and autotrophic kinetic parameters and active biomass fraction, was studied. Moreover was proposed a method to evaluate the autotrophic active fraction, derived by a combination of the ASM1 model and biokinetic parameters directly evaluated by means of respirometry. The experimental observation outlined that TA/TNA in the cycle didn’t affect heterotrophic biomass kinetic and active fraction. This one instead, resulted strongly depended from the soluble substrate present in the influent wastewater. Furthermore, it was observed that a higher aerated phase within the cycle, may lead to a higher autotrophic biomass active fraction.

The present study evaluated different sludge-reduction mechanisms in the oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process in terms of their effects on methane productivity by anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Two different layouts were investigated for the sludge return from an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) to the anoxic (scheme A) or the aerobic (scheme B) reactor of a pre-denitrification plant. Biochemical methane-potential (BMP) assays performed on the excess sludge revealed that scheme A promoted an overall increase of methane production in the OSA (20 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, +19%), although compared with a control CAS plant a significant decrease in the excess sludge production (31%) was obtained. Operating conditions in scheme A caused the occurrence of cell lysis and EPS hydrolysis, thereby increasing the biodegradability of sludge. In contrast, scheme B favoured the occurrence of uncoupling and a maintenance metabolism that did not involve sludge hydrolysis. Consequently, despite a higher reduction of excess sludge (82%), a significant decrease in methane productivity in the OSA (4 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, −41%) was observed. Based on the results, implementing the OSA process may allow high levels of methane production by anaerobic digestion to be maintained if specific sludge-reduction mechanisms are triggered in the waterline, also raising the possibility of co-digestion with other feedstocks.

The recovery of biopolymers from sewage sludge could be a crucial step in implementing circular economy principles in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this frame, the present study was aimed at evaluating the simultaneous production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) obtainable from the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. Two biological enrichment systems, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and a conventional activated sludge operating as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), were monitored for 204 and 186 days, respectively. The maximum biopolymers accumulation capacity was close to 0.60 mgPHA-EPS gVSS−1 in the AGS when operating at 3 kgCODm−3d−1, whereas in the SBR, it was about half (0.35 mgPHA-EPS gVSS−1). Biopolymers extracted from the AGS were mainly constituted by EPS (>70%), whose percentage increased up to 95% with the OLR applied in the enrichment reactor. In contrast, SBR enabled obtaining a higher PHA production (50% of the biopolymers). Results suggested that organic carbon was mainly channeled toward metabolic pathways for extracellular storing in AGS, likely due to metabolic stressors (e.g., hydraulic selection pressure, shear forces) applied for promoting aerobic granulation.

Fouling is considered one of the main drawbacks of membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. Among the main fouling agents, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are considered one of the most impactful since they cause the decrease of sludge filterability and decline of membrane flux in the long term. The present study investigated a biological strategy to reduce the membrane-fouling tendency in MBR systems. This consisted of seeding the reactor with activated sludge enriched in microorganisms with polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) storage ability and by imposing proper operating conditions to drive the carbon toward intracellular (PHA) rather than extracellular (EPS) accumulation. For that purpose, an MBR lab-scale plant was operated for 175 days, divided into four periods (1–4) according to different food to microorganisms’ ratios (F/M) (0.80 kg COD kg TSS−1 d−1 (Period 1), 0.13 kg COD kg TSS−1 d−1 (Period 2), 0.28 kg COD kg TSS−1 d−1 (Period 3), and 0.38 kg COD kg TSS−1 d−1 (Period 4)). The application of the feast/famine strategy favored the accumulation of intracellular polymers by bacteria. The increase of the PHA accumulation inside the cells corresponded to the decrease of EPS and an F/M of 0.40–0.50 kg COD kg TSS−1 d−1 was found as optimum to maximize the PHA production, while minimizing EPS. The lowest EPS content in the sludge (18% of total suspended solids) that corresponded to the maximum content of PHA (9.3%) was found in Period 4 and determined significant mitigation of the fouling rate, whose value was close to 0.10 × 1011 m−1 h−1. Thus, by imposing proper operating conditions, it was possible to drive the organic matter toward PHA accumulation. Moreover, a lower EPS content corresponded to a decrease in the irreversible fouling mechanism, which would imply a lower frequency of the extraordinary cleaning operations. This study highlighted the possibility of obtaining a double benefit by applying an MBR system in the frame of wastewater valorization: minimizing the fouling tendency of the membrane and recovery precursors of bioplastics from wastewater in line with the circular economy model.
